I have the screen where the phone and computer have a ! between...how do I get into download mode from here so I can use Odin??? I've tried the vol up + vol down + power button and also tried using the command 'adb reboot download' and neither of those work......
Try this.
Open Odin
Remove battery/sim/sdcard
Put battery in
Hold only the volume buttons
Plug USB in
If this doesnt work do the process again but only holding up or down, not both at the same time.

Thanks it worked!
I've done what feels like hours of searching and I can't find a solution here. So bear with me, I know this has been covered.
I can't get my phone into DL or recovery mode. When I first got the phone, I was able to enter DL mode, I flashed an early version of 2.2. A few weeks later I used odin one click to flash back to stock.
No I can't use any variation of the 3 buttons to enter DL mode again.
Thanks for help.
pull battery out, SIM card and micro SD if you have one. then hold volume up and down together, while holding the buttons, plug the USB to the computer and still holding those two buttons and the cable plugged in, insert the battery. you should get into download mode in a couple of seconds (DO NOT PRESS THE POWER BUTTON AT ANY POINT)
Sounds like you used the wrong version of Odin One-Click for your phone which disabled your button combos.
Go through this thread and reflash your phone:

Help guys.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate I897. Last night I installed the Clockworkmod ROM Manager in there and was messing around with it.
I choose my phone model to be the the I9000 and then I went into recovery mode to restore the previous ROM, but guess what? It went into recovery mode, the volume up and down buttons select the menu items and it asks me to hit the "OK key" to enter.
The Captivate doesn't have an OK key, it uses the power button. So the Android Recovery Mode here thinks the phone is a I9000 and I can't get it to do anything other than reboot into that mode.
I've tried using the ADB to try to get back into download mode but it's no longer reading the phone. The volume + power buttons to go into that mode has never worked for this phone either.
I'm at a loss at what to do. Is there anyway I can get out of recovery mode and into download mode or back to regular phone usage here? Would I need to take it to an android developer?
Thanks for your help.

Shut off the phone, open up odin(DG's flash to stock one) hold the power and the menu button. Once you see the ATT screen release the power while continuing to hold the volume buttons. Once odin recognizes your device flash to stock using the utility. Once this works donate to DG for saving your ass. Also, quit using ROM manager. Just use the update.zip method everyone else uses.
+1 for just using CWM update.zip It is sooo much easier/faster.
Thanks, but it didn't work. My Galaxy S is one of those where the volume + power buttons don't work to get it into download mode.
I did try power + menu as you suggest, but that doesn't work either.
try this
1. open odin.
2. With phone unplugged remove battery
3. with battery removed plug phone into pc via USB
4. with battery still removed simultaneously hold down Vol. + / - (forget about power button just hold down the two vol buttons)
5. While holding down the vol + / - insert the battery (keep the vol buttons down and hopefully DL screen comes up)

I cannot stress this enough.
Also, OP, if the above doesn't work, it might be USB jig time.
pwr isn't used to go into dload mode - that would turn your phone on.
Do this:
Open odin
Remove bat, sim, ext mem card
replace bat
hold vol -/+ and plug in data cable to computer
(should be download mode)
If that fails, then get yourself a jig... gotta search for the thread though - should cost a couple dollars. Then once you're back up... look up the thread to fix the 3 button combo.
You might try turning the phone off then hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER (not vol up/dwn/pwr) to get into download mode. Make sure to remove the sim and sd cards.
I bricked my phone over the weekend and had similar problem you did.the easiest way too get out in to download mode is a jig. Its easy and cheap to do.look on you tube under un brick captivate fort a tutorial.

Question about using update.zip to install clockwork recovery after flashing to stock (and avoiding Rom Manager):
Is rooting still required?

Once you learn that trick you are on stock for like 2 minutes before you flash
Yeah I'm kind of a lurk but I've been around for about a month just flashing everything, and I had no idea it could be done like this till today. Going to make my next one even faster.

Nothing seems to work.
I'm going to try the jig method Wednesday morning. Wish me luck!
I tried the jig and it didn't work.
What happened was that it got me back into recovery mode, not download mode. Tried it several times. So unless I'm hitting the wrong points on the phone usb plugin (other than the last two), I'm hooped.
I tried the direct resistor wire to points in usb plugin method. I didn't try the one where I cut open a mini-usb cable and use the plug as a dongle, although I think it may get the same result.
What do you guys think?
I had Cognition 4 flashed but had a problem that whenever the battery was removed when the phone was on, about half of my apps, wifi, and texting would force close on reboot and never be able to open until I reflashed Cogntion. Because of this, I decided to try Serendipity VII. I put the zip file on my phone, rebooted into recovery, then tried to do the same thing that I did for Cognition. When I did this it said that it was installing, then said install complete without rebooting. I decided to reboot the phone, and when I tried, it keeps looping on the att screen. I do not see the battery charge signal when I plug it in. I see a loading gear for the battery for about five seconds, then the screen has electric looking blue lines flash through the center and then nothing. I cannot boot into recovery or download, it just keeps looping on the ATT screen.
Make or buy a jig to force it into download mode.

How do I force it into download mode?
So you tried flashing a GB rom without first flashing GB bootloaders?
You should have read and followed the installation instructions on the Serendipity download page. Start Odin one click, see if you can get phone into download mode by any combo and see if Odin sees it. Flash stock and start again.
*If you're not on Gingerbread, you should be shot*

Ya, I had a feeling I should have read more about it, but I was anxious and stupid. I didn't do any of those things. No matter what I try I can't get to recovery. How would I get into download?
JIG

Thanks for all the help, I will be buying a jig from amazon for about ten bucks. I hope this works. But if it doesn't, at least this will teach me to read instructions before doing something that I don't understand very well.
to get into download mode press volume down instead of volume up to get u into recovery, at first i screwed up too somewhat like you so what i did is removed the battery for a minute, put it back in press volume down middle and power button to get into download then use odin to flash a new 2.3.4 gingerbread that u can get from this forum just look through and ull find it, make sure u put the pit file phone file, pda and csc files and make sure u check the repartition auto reboot and freset time checked on then press start hope it helped

Sir try this one last thing, remove your USB Cable from your PC, remove your battery...
While holding down both (Up and Down) volume buttons, insert the battery and THEN connect your phone to your PC through USB, see if this puts it into Download mode.
If not, try doing the same just holding down the DOWN volume button. Hope this helps, it seems as if these combinations kind of vary from phone to phone. Cheers

I tried this and all it did was do the att loop screen thing. Also, my computer dinged that it saw a usb device being plugged in, but then the restart loop restarts the phone and continues this indefinitely. Thanks for the help anyway.
You don't need to buy a jig, just go do that thing where you get three (or four) resistors in series that totals 301k ohms and touch them to specific contacts in the usb port of your phone... look it up on xda, it's worked for most people.

Thanks, but I already screwed up my phone by doing something that I did not fully understand, it's a small wonder that I can use Linux and not be too confused. I think I will take the easy way out with this one.
Hmm I remember that often when I tried to put my phone into recovery mode or download, whenever I held the Power Button down, it would just keep looping. When you but the battery on and connect your phone, make sure you are not holding the Power button, just the volume ones. Perhaps it is your case?

It loops if whether or not I hold any buttons down. If I hold the power button down while trying to get into download mode, then it just turns it off.
Turn off the phone, remove the battery, get a stock odin one click for the captivate.
I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0 seems to be a reliable flash when I run into trouble.
Start odin, plug the phone into the USB cable, hold the volume up/down key or try any combination up/down or both. Insert the battery and hopefully it will go into download mode.
Been reliable so far...
Hi. I'm unable to get into recovery mode after I flashed the Talon kernel as per the instructions here.
http://www.team-continuum.net/forum...ses/(guide)general-installation-instructions/
I'm consistently able to get into download mode and reflashed the talon 0.1.2 kernel as per the instructions there, but still to no avail. Any other suggestions to get my phone into CWM ?
Im trying to flash Continuum 6
Might as well get the Jig easy Download mode xD. I made mine myself cost a whole $2.50 for one xD
Im running cm7 on my captivate and my power button just stopped working. The phone refuses to go into download mode via any methods. I am just trying to get it back to stock so I can take it to the att store and have it replaced under warranty. Anyone know any ways to do this? I cant even use clockwork mod without power button. Apps like root toolbox that can reboot into download mode wont get into download mode either.
Thanks
it seems to me like you need a jig but also this goes in q/a not dev. if you are on cm7 (whith the old bootloaders i assume) the way to get into dl mode is hold both volume buttons and plug it into usb
Remove battery and unplug USB, insert battery, press volume up+volume down and connect USB while holding both volume buttons - this should boot you to the download mode so keep your one click open.
