[Q] So whats with this Nvidia news and harmony? - Dell Streak 7

http://www.androidcentral.com/nvidia-stop-supporting-harmony-platform-past-froyo
Just saw this, of course I saw this too.
http://developer.nvidia.com/tegra/forum/honeycomb-harmony#comment-6191 as a response from Nvidia.
So are we still ok with the Streak 7 or did we just lose out somewhere?
I know I am waiting for the new roms to be posted sometime. =D

guess we are safe then. Talked to a very knowledgeable dude at a tmo store today (has a rooted, custom ROM Vibrant) and he told me they have been told that the ds7 will see honeycomb in the future.
I think we'll have to take the whole, wait and see approach.

Lets HOPE we get Honeycomb... Its the only way to see Hardware Accel I think for games we wanna play...

The hardware acceleration that is added in Honeycomb is in the user interface, we already have it in 2d/3d OpenGL applications (games, etc.), otherwise this thing would be a pissant when it comes to any real use. And, it is no slouch when it comes to gaming...
Honeycomb is strictly dependent upon Dell, if you want to know the likelihood of it getting done, they are the ones to pester.

Actually some devs and their games added support for Xoom, but said they couldnt on Streak 7 since its not on Honeycomb yet. (Hardware accel that is)

WM7 on the Touch HD? Possibility?

WM7 on the Touch HD?
Any news?
Too early to tell; but I am confident some chefs will be generous and courageous enough to try it
What i heard was that wm7 needed atleast 1ghz cpu and more rom/ram then the HD1 to function. So i think that it might be a bridge to far for the blackstone.
However i have to agree with habibjamil, there will probably be a few chefs who will give it a go
Given the amazing jobs these guys pull off already with whats available I'd say the sky's the limit. We'll just have to wait and see
I guess multi-touch is a core function in wm7.. So no go for HD1.
As long as Multi-Touch (or Pinch-to-Zoom) isn't required to boot we can run it. I mean, HTC Album 3.5 for the HD2 has Pinch-to-Zoom functionality, doesn't mean it doesn't run on the HD, you just can't zoom that easy.
Second off all, if Microsoft didn't change the 'idea' behind WinMo (multiple device support) there will be a driver layer that producers can change. These drivers will be changes (probably) but that might give us an angle to build a non-multi-touch driver. (All speculation though.)

So I tend to agree with the quote below. Yes 'the sky is the limit', not all functionality might work, but we will have to wait and see what does work. Android didn't run on the BlackStone either, but see how for they got (that's partially Open Source, but still).

I don't know if it will run, only time will tell. I think there is a chance it might work, but also a fair chance it won't boot. It's all up to Microsoft what the OS checks for when it boots and what we can change.
To early to tell. No point guessing. My gut tells me that a number of chefs will have a go, though my head tells me that it may not be possibly for a number of reasons.
HD doesn't have multi-touch
HD doesn't have 1ghz cpu
But this doesn't mean that some things couldn't be taken from WM7 and brought to the HD
We'll just have to wait and see. Until then, this thread is rather pointless as no phones exist with wm7 yet

Android 2.3

Will it be possible for us to get 2.3 ported on the milestone?
We haven't even got official 2.2 yet...

needs higher memory requirements like 512Mb, so only Miletone2 and in 2012..
(it took 1yr for milestone1, so thats easy to estimate from now+12months)

Is that really true? What would require higher memory than Froyo? I don't see anything in the features which would require 512MB..
Guys: let's focus on what is REALLY important from 2.3. We don't need all those features...I mean: we WOULD like to get them all but I think it's a hard challenge for developers (the upgraded kernel hasn't even been released for 2.2, I don't want a 2.3 with battery draining and kernel_issues just becuase of Motorola laziness...). I just need a 2.1 (which covers all the "basics" of what a smartphone MUST do) with some improvements from 2.3! I'll start with mine:
1) New Keyboard: I really want to try the new keyboard and think shouldn't be so difficult to port it to 2.1 (just a hope!)
2) Download manager: not a must-have but hey...would be useful!
3) New UI and "smoother" animations: I'm quite sure this is almost impossible to port..
4) Support for WebM: see above...
By the way maybe the whole gingerbread can run on 2.6.32 kernel! So a good porting would be ready when motorola releases the official 2.2 sbf. Am I correct?
EDIT: Look at these:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AAFF9PN-WU&feature=channel
Youtube 2.0 is also available for 2.1! I can't notice any difference with 2.3!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCgf8RW7B88&feature=channel
Newer streetview and Maps navigation are available on 2.1...No voice controls though!

it's a sweet dream... but i would be awesome
@89luca89: I didn't see anywhere that 2.3 supports GPU acceleration! This would be AWSOME especially for the browser!! How have Opera's guys been able to enable hw acceleration on their browser? Do you think it would be also possible on custom browsers like Dolphin or is that a "Presto" (the Opera's rendering engine while Chrome's one is Webkit) feature? Thanks!
@razer54: Being sincere...I'd really like (read as NEED) a smoother browser than smoother animations...Launcher Pro is smooth enough for me! And menus scrolling is too! The only one who lacks smooth interaction (scrolling, pinch2zoom etc.) is the browser! But, as I wrote above, there could be the possibility to port Opera's hw acceleration on a browser like Dolphin (or the stock one being the source code public). Couldn't it?
I presume everyone has seen this:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.3-highlights.html
Heaps of the new improvements look awesome, improved responciveness, native audio control, new keyboard, dalivik garbage collector, native voip, updated video drivers - all this stuff would make lots of apps (including games!) much better on Android.
I really hope game devs start getting serious about Android with the approah of the Playstation phone and Android 2.3 available. I'm no expert but I assume while some things like the new keyboard may be possible to port back to 2.1 or 2.2 on milestone, we will never see the bulk of 2.3 on our phones.
Ballinor I almost forgot to ask if copy&paste can be ported from 2.3!!
EDIT: Ok I changed my mind...I NEED Gingerbread!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me that will be possible to install it on Milestone!
can someone port the new keyboard? there´s already a couple of leaked keyboards but they all appear small on our precious .... its like a hyper compact keyboard ....

I'm sorry but what you're saying is mostly a dull statement. I wouldn't expect this coming from you at all, seriously. You didn't even explained what would need more memory. Its clearly stated the most of the higher specs would be used for new Multimedia standards and gaming improvements (Concurrent garbage collector being one of them!).
It took a bit more then half of year for Milestone 1 to get unofficial 2.2, the biggest problem being unlocked boot loader.
This is the same thing as telling its impossible to get Froyo to G1. Officially, that is correct. Unofficially, Cyano and everyone in XDA and other communities are doing everything to keep G1 alive. And I can tell you, Froyo on G1 is working smooth and without problems.

The 512mb of RAM is a statement from Google. They just want less fragmantation in android devices.
What that really means is it'll probably run on the Milestone if we didn't have that damn bootloader..
It'll probably be ported to the Droid.
It will be ported to Milestone too..

Unfortunately I'm not an expert in programming, but I'll give all my support for testing!

Has anyone TRIED to launch WP7 on TP2?

I know you guys have talked about this already, but has anyone tried to load it? Maybe a derivitive of the HD2 rom for WP7? I bet anything that it would work, it would just be a little slower.....please give some feedback for this thread
i agree the tp2 deserves a try they said we couldn't overclock now look @ us
P.S also make a CDMA version for us sprint people

+1 to that.
The problem is the processor architecture...
WP7 on TP2
I bet that it wouldn't matter, they say the requirements are what they are, but they can operate on lower specs, just won't operate at optimum efficiency. If the HD2 and WP7 Phones are at 1ghz, its not bad that we are at 748mhz+. I bet it will work!!! I know technical aspects, but it sucks I don't know how to actually do any of it!!!! Maybe someone should come up with a bounty

Whatever, TP2 runs a Qualcomm processor ARMv6, while Snapdragon is ARMv7.
WP7 requires ARMv7.
It's not as easy as you think, guys.
can we get it
maybe lescro could chime in
No, we can NOT get WP7 ever. It's just not possible. As Jackos said, WP7 is built on ARMv7. The TP2 has an ARMv6 chipset. The ARMv6 CPU just can't execute the code in WP7. It has nothing to due with the speed of the CPU. Just like how certain Adobe software doesn't work on old AMD/Intel CPU's because they're missing the SSE2 instruction set.
EDIT: This has been stated by Da_G many times & trust me, he knows what he's talking about. Follow Da_G on Twitter.
Mod, please close this thread.
It is possible but very difficult to do. Some has to make it ARMv6 able.
WP7 on TP2
Like others said, it was impossible to OC our TP2's, and now look!!! You're right, the WP7 on an ARMv6 core would be difficult to do, but someone can do it! It's kind depressing that everyone keeps saying "never" will we have it on the TP2. If you can create a theme from throttlelauncher that does just about everything that the WP7 itself can do, I would wager that you could modify the WP7 rom to execute off of the ARMv6 core....problem is nobody wants to spend the time to do so for free, so we should come up with a bounty.
Actually when these devs tell you that the code can not run they aren't explaining (rightfully because it might fall on deaf ears) that windows ce is closed source so changing anything would require a large amount of work if the kernel can be changed at all. Its not like the linux kernel where we can go in and change things in the source code then compile. WP7 is what it is its like saying that windows 7 can run on an arm processor yeah it probably could but you would have to change the kernel which i believe only microsoft has the ability to do. Just tough it out like the rest of us until your upgrade date. Please no more WP7 on TP2 threads
is this really a question? FIRST of all, it is impossible. Second of all, there are various themes that would be more stable than any wm7 port if there was ever a dev who had some magical touch. yeah, we can overclock. but who here can safely oc to 1g? closest i get is 768. and that gets touchy.
believe me, theres no way/reason to do this. just buy a new phone
WP7 on TP2
My only problem, which is quite a personal problem, is that I am not allowed to have a camera on my phone where I work.....so this blows because they will not make any more cameraless phones. So anything to make my TP2 any better, I'm all game. Besides, I absolutely HATE on screen keyboards, no matter how accurate they are. Again, just a personal problem.
You're job will end up changing that rule. They have too, because cameraless cell are sadly a thing of the past. I don't know a single person who doesn't have a camera on their cell. As for the hardware KB, check out the HTC 7 Pro. It's a 1Ghz Snapdragon WP7 version of the TP2.
Somethings are impossible.... Overclocking is one thing but executing code compiled for a different CPU is NOT the same thing!
As others have pointed out, it's ARM v6 vs V7 and it's not a code issue - its a microcode issue - the v6 does not have the same instruction set so the code cannot execute.
Short of M$ recompiling the code (not very likely), releasing the source (even less likely) or writing a V6 interpreting shell (can you say SLOW) it ain't going to happen.
Deal with it and wait till your contract is over and get a new phone when you can

No, I am 100% Certain my work will not change that rule. They will prohibit cell phones altogether before allowing a camera. But I will check out the HTC 7 pro
if you go to wp7 forum theres alot of problems with that phone
...like any phone
but there are alot of themes for our phone
like lesscrco wp7
BTW. Why would anyone need WP7 on TP2? Imho it's good enough with WM6.5.
WP7 would only decrease the functionality and cause problems like battery life or performance.
Emulator
Emulation is possible, ask the people who wrote BOCHS or Pear PC.
However, it's absolutely not practical to go down this route. It would require an amazing amount of work for what would be a very slow WP7 device with no battery life.
The time and money spent on a project like this would be better put to improving WM6 or Android.

Will the nook get some honey?

Here is a thread that will be all about speculation..
I saw the honeycomb and it was smoking!!! What are the chances that the guys here will get it on the nook? And if yes, how it will run? Given that it only have a 800Mhz processor (1Ghz overclocked).
Looking forward for any opinions
I hope so, but that's a good bit away. Honeycomb uses on screen buttons, so our hardware button deficiencies would go away, if it were possible.
IIRC, Honey requires a 1Ghz processor. If we can get the overclocked kernels working with the five 9's of accuracy, then its possible. I really would like for there to be a way to strip out the nooks reader and shop apps for B&N so that I can keep the books and magazines that I've purchased. Thats pretty much a prerequisite for me.

Well, this is just my opinion of course...
It will still be some time before we even see a 2.3
3.0 will not be out for a while and by the time that happens newer, faster, better, tablets will hit the market and catch everyone eye..
People may flock towards the newer tablets and leave the older ones behind..
I don't want to say it will never happen, but it is possible we won't see a 3.0 if the developers flock to newer tabs..
One thing is for sure, you will not see an official version from B&N.. I have my doubts there will even be an official 2.2 from them.
Is it bringing something amazing to the table? Haven't even bothered looking at honey just because the GUI stuff everyone likes looks ugly as hell.
Nook color was my first android device so I prefer the simple notification bar at the bottom, as well as using a taskmanager to kill/switch apps.

I hope you realize that the fine folks at Cyanogen are already working on a NC version of CyanogenMOD version 7 -- which is a Gingerbread (2.3) rom. Some of their best devs are on it, and they've even gotten it to boot already!
So, don't be surprised when you see 2.3 sooner, rather than later...

The Honeycomb Conundrum

Let me preface this by saying that I have nothing but the utmost respect for the dev community (NC and otherwise) and I really don't mean to step on any toes with this. I'm fairly new at all this and I've got some questions.
Alright, so as we've all heard by now, Google (whether their reasons are benevolent or not) are withholding the AOSP release of Honeycomb and that kind of rains on everyone's nook color parade. We've got a mostly working port of HC that kind of sags in the performance area. Its almost been enough to make me flash Gingerbread but there are a few things - namely the browser, email app, soft keys and notification system - that I'd miss. The new + screen is nice, but I've been using launcher pro as it runs seemingly faster than the stock launcher, so I'm already missing out on that.
Now, from what I understand, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, deeperblue's HC port uses parts of Gingerbread to make everything all hunky dory.
My question is this; would a viable solution to slow HC performance be to make a new rom and pump MORE Gingerbread in? i.e. Take HC's notification system replace GB's phone-style notification pane. Make it mostly gingerbread with some tablet friendly nip/tucks here and there.
I realize there are things like softkeys and the bottom taskbar mod, but HC's handling of the android buttons and the new notification system is just so appealing. Its making the choice of which rom to run unduly difficult. And while I can't cook a rom, I'm hoping someone who can sees this and runs with it, if it is feasible, that is.
Truthfully... It's up in the air like everything else, unless a DEV directly comes out of the shadows and saids, hey i'm going to do it... Then we just won't know. Honestly, I'm sad that we won't see HC right around the corner, but CM7 is pretty awesome. And the Xoom is scheduled to drop down to $599 (Wifi only) today, making it a lot more competitive than the 3g.
That's not to say that I personally have $599 to drop and go buy a new tablet, but it does mean that you'll probably see them on craigslist or ebay in a few months for a bit cheaper. =\
The honey comb preview is awsome but to many apps don't work.

That was kinda the plan. CM7 development was going in a way that all the improvements (Bluetooth, partially working DSP, an accelerated interface) were going to be directly ported to Honeycomb once the source released. But without the source, that can't happen.
Basically Google has completely screwed any Nook Color fans wanting Honeycomb.
The only improvement that can be made is that a ROM could be made from the final SDK. That would be just as laggy, and will lack new features (Bluetooth, DSP, etc.), but it would be able to use Android tablet apps.
From the conversation about Google's move on the net, many are saying there won't be a Honeycomb source at all, and the next source dump will come with Ice Cream months from now.
So Honeycomb fans have a choice- either try out the CM7 modification that you talked about to make CM7 more Honeycomb-like, or start saving up for that Xoom...

Thank you for your informative reply.
It seems now that my best bet is going to be t see what the cm7 guys cook up. Hopefully this aosp business will spark some of the innovation that the android community is known for. I'd love to help, but its not exactly my forte
With regards to what apps aren't working, my marketplace only seems to intall apps when the stars are right. I often have to attempt an install upwards of five times to have it succeed, if it even does. Otherwise i get insufficient storage errors or indeterminate error 18
sorry if i am hijacking this a bit, but i had thought that android was 'open source'. why the change in the plans to not release hc? is this to protect the hw manufacturers like mot who have hc on the xoom, and freeze out users who want it ported non supported platforms? Otherwise, I can't understand the logic.
I got the nc cause i had thought it had the best $/performance of any android based tablet. For half the price of others, it had great screen, and forgetting bt, etc., nice hw specs. With hc, it would be fantastic!
How else to counter ipads if not to get hc on as many tablets as possible?
I wonder if the fact that the playbook is running our apps has anything to do with it. If so, I don't mind anything that makes it rough for RIM.

It is open source and it WILL be released however at this time they don't think it's ready for final release (I've heard of various tweaks they need to make in the xoom) and are working those out prior to releasing it to devs
