Should i get this phone? Advice pls! - LG Optimus 2x

Hi all. Im due an upgrade i summer. Im looking At this phone or the desire s. But is this phone buggy? Is the dua core really something special? Reviews on the 2x arent too good atm, the phone has many negative points abt it! It was like that with my tg01. I got it because it was the worlds first 1ghz phone. (just like this is the worlds first dual core) my tg01 has soo mamy bugs with it and it was rushed out. Is the 2x like this? I hear it is very buggy. I dont want to get another phone like my tg01 where i rely on custom roms for the phone to be usable.
So long story short, is this phone good? Is dual core something special? Or is speed more or less the same as single cores? Some ppl say that dual core is not needed with android.. Is this true?
Sorry for the quick messy typing (not on pc) and looking for some quick answers!
Cheers

bump :')
anyone?

Its GPU is a bit ahead of the Samsung's... The CPU is far ahead. In Smartbench 2011 I score 4142CPU and 2953GPU and no samsung devices are even on the charts (with 1.4ghz OC but still stock is a lot better, and I would recommend installing a custom rom...). The call quality can be quite bad until you flash the baseband but after that it should be great. I have nothing bad to say about this phone, and when 2.4 comes out it will only get better (2.4 is rumored to come with real dual-core support)

Even though mine's been working quite well for past 2 weeks as my daily phone, there are also people who are quite fed up with theirs.
I hadn't read xda's user reviews prior to getting mine, but if I were to get another 2x now, I would wait for LG to provide a firmware update that significantly reduces the lock-up/reboot/battery drain issues. It's just to be perfectly sure that I will get one as stable (or more so) than my existing 2x.

I believe the battery drain issue can be fixed manually. just need a through check on whats running and how

thank you all for replies!
(xilw3r sorry i have run out if thanks!)
i
so most issues will be fixed with updates? but does the phone need to use a custom rom to be usable? is lg's ui good?
and is dualcore really much of a difference? do you notice a giant speed difference betweeen other android phones, or is it overhyped?
is battery life good on this? how long heavy use can it last under wifi?
im really stuck considering this and the
desire s

LG ui is laggy and a personal choice, i use lancher pro plus. heavy use and wifi battery lasts a few hours.
Battery doesnt last a day with low usage for me. 5-10% per hour on standby. With 3g on and mail twitter etc sync every 60 minutes. my old hero lasts longer with heavier use
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA Premium App

Can't comment much on the performance or UI as I moved over from Symbian. Though, it's much smoother in its user interaction than my son's LG Optimus One, but that's single core, 600mhz.
On days that I don't play much with it and actually use it like a typical work phone, the battery remains above 50% by 6pm. I think usually about 1 to 1.5 hour talk, hourly email auto-checks, less than half-hour of browsing and less than 20 SMSes. I am not a heavy user: I don't IM at all, nor GPS or game much. Just typical work-type usage.
Note: I switch off wifi when I am out of the house and rely on 3G for data connection. I find that keeps the battery lasting longer.

then you have some application/service/process running roque
Mine easily last 10 hours in standby with only 1% battery use (wifi and 3g and autosync enabled)
if you have 5-10% drain per hour on standby, you have some application/service/process not going to sleep as it should, using cpu and power, and preventing your phone from entering standby mode.
Thats not a problem of the phone - but a software issue that you as user need to investigate and solve
with low usage I easily get 2 days running - with moderate use 1½ - and with heavy use 1 full day.

No strange processes running here, spent a few days of testing with different roms aswell drain still exists

thanks fir responses! i was gonna say 5-10 drainage in an hr is bad! is the a common problem? i heard abt these battey issues!

Battery usage:
16h after power was unplugged, I still have around 40-45% of battery. Low usage (WiFi/3G on, a few calls, gTalk, but no email sync activated).
ROM: 10b

I relly want this phone but im not sure about it anymore.. i read so many many many big bugs about it, and seems that almost EVERYONE is having them..
optimus one was a great phone with dew bugs, why cant they make the same quality on a HIGHER END handset lol :S ?

If you look through the forums of any phone, there will be a lot of people talking about how they have some sort of problem.
Nexus S

yea but o2x is A LOT, mean u have 60 page thead about reboot issues.... that doesnt look too promising ..

You can always return it if you have too many problems
Nexus S

The stores have em already, G-slate and G2x. Played with both today, I know the manager in store but before somebody make a dumb comment pertaining to that, aint nuttin top secret and no special info was bestowed on me because of who I know. The stores just have them stocked already. The slate is nice though, good build, nice size and weight, kinda reminded me of the ipad but lighter. Honeycomb makes our phones look like gameboy colors.

But the G2x was also better than my expectations! By far blows most of the others out of water.

Rediscovering SuperPower v 0.80 BETA

So I was over in the Atrix forums the other night because there was someone over there who was wanting some help deciding if they should ditch their Atrix for the Thrill 4G. The overwhelming amount of posts about some of the hitches with the Thrill were in regards to the battery consumption and the RAM getting hammered with general usage.
Over here since a bunch of us are actively doing doing what we can to try and speed the development along having being trying new things and tweaking this or that in an attempt to make some progress toward real development.
Here is a link to what I said over there:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17448824#post17448824
So I was running back through all the apps. and such that I had used in the past on other phones and hidden in my lengthy list of apps. used to get every ounce of power out of whatever phone I was jacking with, was SuperPower. I had the paid version but it has subsequently been ditched and redone it seems and now takes the form of a BETA.
This BETA I dropped onto my Thrill and started to go through the options that are available on this version that were not there before. You can now manually go into SuperPower and tell the app. what program you want it to kill when the screen goes black, how you want wi-fi and/or radios to behave, etc. It is extremely customizable.
Until there is a custom ROM and all that for the Thrill I think we are going to have to do our best to manage the few minute undesirables this device has with things like SuperPower. So, my end result as it stands right now on battery and RAM usage, I am using a few different apps. and I will list the links below for your convenience; is after about 10 1/2 hours of fairly mid to heavy use I was sitting at about 71 % battery life. Understand I let the battery go down below 20 % then charged it back up to 100 % with no interruptions in the charging process. You should do this at least once a month just maintain good battery health and longevity anyway. Especially on powerhouse phones like the Thrill 4G.
Now when I say mid to heavy usage this is my interpretation of that; regular talk time throughout the day, 100+ text during the day, market and music downloads, 2D and 3D gaming. When it was time to charge again I was at 13 or so hours with 49 % battery still showing. Not to bad as it was blowing through battery like it was free before.
Here are the apps. I used with download links. If you have questions or anything let me know or PM me:
SuperPower BETA v 0.80(*Must be rooted by the way to use this*)
https://market.android.com/search?q=SuperPower
Chainsfire 3D(*must be rooted*)
https://market.android.com/search?q=Chainsfire&so=1&c=apps
*As a side note besides the other great benefits this app. offers what I use to help with battery usage is the Night Mode feature*
SPB Shell 3D (*This is a paid app. and worth every penny IMO. But if you are not down with dropping the change for it use LauncherPro or one of the other free Launchers out there*)
https://market.android.com/search?q=spb+shell+3d+&so=1&c=apps
Advanced Task Manager
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.arron.taskManagerFree&feature=search_result
Hotspot Guru
https://market.android.com/search?q=Hotspot+Guru&so=1&c=apps
Besides what I listed as benefits for SuperPower there are a ton more that I have not even touched on. This app is jam-packed full of modding goodness. get the app. and use at your own risk kind of thing and explore this bad boy because its a doozy. Lol! Hope this helps.
What are you doing specifically on the Superpower app to get such good battery life?
I think I am at the point that the best option....is to just return the thrill.
I tried using it as my dedicated device for a few days now and it just isnt working out. it freezes, locks up, bluetooth is not holding a connection ,just all around does not perform like I expected.
I really want to like it haha....i really like the overall physical feel of the phone. The 3d is great (after waiting a ridiculously long time for it to load) but it is just too sluggish and quirky for me to enjoy daily.
I am most likely going to start from scratch tonight and give it one more week....but without some major magical miracle (like fully working cwm, kernel development and the ability to flash O3D roms) i just dont see myself keeping the thrill.

Really. Mine flies through screen's and apps with Zero Lag including 3D. As far as it sounds to me, sounds like your phone is either defective or loaded with a Ton of apps running in the background constantly. If it's apps running in the background all the time as far as I recall Froyo didn't do the greatest at managing what to shut down and when. Either way goodluck.
Thanks! As for apps...that isn't the issue for sure. There are a number of things the phone does quickly but there are a few it does not. The camera does concern me. When I open the three d can it just goes blank screen for a while and then finally comes up.
Hell even typing at times everything will occassionally just pause for a few.
I haven't given up yet. I am going to hard reset and give her one more go

Try using taskiller and set it up to kill apps when the screen is off. That seems to work well for me with app management.

Personally, I have been using "Autokiller Memory Optimizer," which is NOT a task killer, but allows you to set memory limits.
This may be overly aggressive, but this is the setup I have been using, and it has been treating me very well. From top to bottom, in MB (from "foreground app" to "empty app"): 18 / 24 / 32 /100 / 125 / 150
I may tweak it down a little, but in general this setup has allowed me to multitask between apps really quickly, while Android "kills" the apps I'm no longer using. Highly recommended for (rooted) Thrill users!
While I'm at it, another useful (paid, requires root) tool for the thrill is "Autostarts."
With what I have done so far with SuperPower and such my phone is flying right along and running consistently with between 186 and 202 mb of available memory. So with the processor and RAM hauling ass I am loving this phone. I am can't wait for some some stuff to come down the pipe for this phone. There is definitely a lot of BS stuff running hidden that can slow it down but with SuperPower and the task killer and all the stuff I talked about when I started the thread I am so far satisfied.
Running mine basically how it came straight out of the box, no custom rom, only fancy apps I'm using are appkiller and setcpu right now. Battery life before I got setcpu was... less than desired. But when I got it and configured it to only use as much processor speed as I'd need for my "on the go" usage, I get enough life out of it to last me the whole day, and get home at 20% battery. What I did? Set it so it uses minimal CPU speed (30%)with the screen off, and in calls, and during normal usage it only runs at 60% and that's more than enough to handle my regular usage of texting, emails, calls, browsing, a little bit of gaming, near constant syncing, as well as a good amout of music streaming and maybe only about 50% standby time. Love this phone, dual core with half gig of ram is pretty much complete overkill as far as any phone goes. I fly through Apps only using 60% of the cpu's stock capabilities.now for the times when I'm out longer than normal (over 14 hours a day) I have it set to use minimal CPU speed at 15% battery life and less, in case of emergencies.
I'm returning mine. I either put too many apps, get too many defective phones, or just need a phone with more memory. Never had running out of application room on the Captivate or Inspire.
Camera can take up to 8-10 seconds to finally come on. This is a pain when I want some quick shots of the kids at the moment.
Mine also freezes up while I'm using the keyboard whether it's the stock or swiftkey or better keyboard. This is the 2nd thrill I've had and same issues. So that leaves pretty much the GS2 that's coming out. And Samsung scares me.
Until we get a custom kernel.....i am not aware of anything that will allow us too throttle cpu speed. what are you using? sure the apps will allow you to make setting adjustments yes....but those settings are not sticking (not on the apps I have tried)

I'm using the xda app setCPU it's a free download for site members and only requires rooting your phone. Note that the app only controls the max and min speeds of the processor, this isn't overclocking. I don't really know that much about the app beyond what it's supposed to, and seemingly succeeding at doing. Everything that I've done with the app seems to be working fine. I tested it with min and max at only 30% CPU speed (the lowest it seems to allow for), and I definitely felt it in the way my phone responded, the entire time (atleast ten mins) up til I turned the settings back up

SuperPower can throttle it up a bit. It is one of the settings to be checked off.
Open up SuperPower>scroll down to: CPU Scaling: Enable and check the box
Below that is a box you can check for CPU Scaling: ondemand
Like I said in my original post there are a fair amount of options that gives us the opportunity to have our devices running at their best. I appreciate everyone's postings about what they are trying and so forth. This is how it all begins to getting stuff done. Thanks guys.

Can you post your setcpu settings?
I'm running my CPU at 600000mHz max and 300000mHz min for normal use, and babe a profile that sets it to 300000mHz max and min with the screen off. Have all my profiles set for "on demand" so it only ramps up the CPU when it needs it

I think that is why many of us expect a huge battery improvement after updating to JB ,perhaps the newer system wont be so power hungry.
these screenshots are fun and all but they are totaly irrelevant.
hoe much USE time are people gettng is whats interesting.
so screen on time.
as the goal is no drain with screen off and as long as possible screen on time (this is when you use apps and so on).
my phone can be on for 2 days and still hve 95% juice left but thats kinda irrelevant if i dont touch it.
when i use it non stop my use time averages on 4 hours and 15 minutes so far.
all the people having problems with battery drain must have either bad apps installed of verry poor wifi/3g connections.
as in a good serup with no bad apps and good signal wifi should not drain battery at all if your not using it.
i would so like all people with issue to lend me there phones for 3 days to see if in my stable envourement they have the same issues.
im fairly sure that all these problems are signal and user related and that it has nothing to do with the hardware.
My phone would only give me 2 hours max if the mobile data is on with sync off facebook sync set to 1 hour and hotmail sync set to 1 hours. But if wifi is on throughout the day i would get around 3 hours 15 min average with sync on hotmail set to push and facebook sync set to 1 hour. The battery is really poor as i only use it generally for txting whatsapp and just a bit browsing thats all nothing else. When i watch videos my phone consumes less battery, than normal usage which i do everyday. The highest screen time i have ever got was 4 hours 15 mins thatd because i watched a video for almost like 3 hours thats why. But the battery is still really poor

My android system also consumes a lot of power, its always on top no matter what. I am running on V_10H I disabled some stock apps using titanium backup and used fast demorcacy but the only difference I could see was android wakeups had been much lower thats all and so less power consumption when phone on standby thats all.

this is totally relevant information for regular users.
many people complain about battery drain and that a custom rom is the cause or custom kernel when its available, but what shows that it is not, is when you can place your handheld mobile or tablet alone with wifi set to instant off and you got 3g disabled and it lives for days without loss of battery, you know that it is stable.
when you suddenly lose battery in hours and previous tests showed it was lasting days, you can be sure you got battery infected apps trying to activate your cpu all the time.
i'd like to buy this phone but i'm a bit afaid of the battery drain. people who says it last 2 days with normal use other says that with gaming and browsing lasts 10-15h but a lot says that the battery lasts just 6 h with normal use... can someone who owns this phone and he use it with a middle-intense use (texting, browsing, gaming some time) tell me how much lasts the battery please??

Well, my usage pattern is kinda light, but still...
- took it off the charger at 7:15 am
- 3g data permanently on while I'm not at home (from 7:20 til 18:00 or 19:00)
- wifi on when I'm at home (during the night too, I never switch the phone off)
- sync always on (gmail, whatsapp)
- received a couple short phone calls, let's say 5-6 mins
- received a bunch of emails, say about 15 or something
- some messaging (on whatsapp and gtalk, I don't use sms)
- some facebook, let's say 15 minutes (through mobile website 'cause FB app sucks big time, always had and most probably always will)
- some net browsing looking for a few stuff, let's say 5-10 minutes
- checked a couple forums on tapatalk a couple times
- updated 3 or 4 apps on wifi
- downloaded a 50mb game on wifi and played it for like 10-15 minutes
- ebook reading on moon+ for 1 hour and 30 minutes (maybe even longer, didn't check the exact time)
I connected it to the charger when it reached 12% battery at about midnight THE NEXT DAY (yes, that is around 41 hours without recharging it)
Overall, I can say I'm satisfied, at least for my standard usage...
- Stock v10h firmware, no root (yet).
- Nova launcher since 5 minutes after buying it
- I usually keep brightness quite low unless I'm out in the open under the sun, good thing about this phone's screen is that it's usually very well visible even with only a 20% brightness. If I need to use it in full sunlight, I conveniently placed a full brightness widget on my homescreen, and then back to 20% with one click when I'm done. No autobrightness 'cause I don't like much how it's set to work on this phone (was kinda better on my old i9000, but oh well, 1 click widget and I'm good to go, no sweat)
- Disabled 3 or 4 stock apps (through app settings, no titanium or other stuff)
I noticed that battery usage was kinda higher before disabling those stock apps, I guess one of them was a powermonster of sorts (I suspect the meteo one, but I'm not sure)
- No facebook notifications of course, not for battery-related reasons but just 'cause I simply hate them... but I guess that's nice on the battery too

For ppl who worry about battery life should watch this video. It might help u =)
It just keep getting better
Enjoy
My first day was no where near that bad. I got about 18 hours with regular usage and that's a lot for considering I use my phone all day for work. I love my nexus 4!
That actually goes for all android phones, it keeps getting better cause you build a cache.

I had significantly better battery life than him even before the last android update. I also don't put ****ty apps like HD widgets and facebook that like to either wake up the GPS or draw stupid amounts of power for no reason.
Some people shouldn't make videos.
Just saying.

[q] getting the 4x...help solicited

First of all, I earnestly apologize if this question is answered before. I am seriously thinking of getting this cell. I am from India and it is an absolute steal now for a quad core and 720p screen now. Plus I love the Optimus UI the most.
I need a few inputs from you fellow users.
i. How is the battery life of the phone? With moderate usage (music in headphones, few snaps, half an hour of gaming) will I get a full day?
ii. Is there any commendable ROM for this phone? like MIUI or CM?
iii. How is the performance? Is it comparable to the other Quad Cores like the ONE X or the S3??
iv. Any word on Jelly Bean update? (leak, official, custom --> doesn't matter)
BTW, am expecting some "Answers" and not flamings. please...
awaiting answers.
regards,
achyut.

1. Battery life good. Same as other quad phones. You can buy better battery if needed
2. For now no.
3. The performance is in the same track as other quad phones
4. For now no.

Well, apart of the camera, that for some people is enough, the phone is very good.
We still don't have custom ROMs but ICS 4.0.3 is a smooth and fast OS in this device.
The size is the ideal, specially using GPS, to see TV or just replay your own videos, or to see web sites.
Battery is good, of course that depends on how each one uses the phone. Miracles finished long time ago...
The shape is nice, not a pebble, not a brick, like Italian cars
The relation quality/price is one of the best too...
But like everything, some love it, others hate it... perfection don't existe.

You should go ahead and buy the device. It is absolutely worth the price. In fact, looks like until Optimus L9 arrived in India, 4X had good/decent review on flipkart.
In my case, the battery last for 1.5 days approximately (few calls, sms, games, WiFi-internet browsing, etc). As others have said, if you are a heavy user, you have to charge is every day. I guess any smartphone with continuous usage will drain the battery fast.
1. My battery life is great, i can get trough a day of use( wich includes: 30-60 min of gaming, about 30min here on xda and in the browser, and some light checking on FB and Twitter) with half the battery. But i hear; that if this is used as a workers phone, it will just last a day. Having a charger is smart.
2. There is no custom roms whatsoever. But we seem to have someone working on a rom based in 2nd init
3. I HAVE gotten over 16000 in antutu benchmark once. Witch is conciderably higher that the highest one x score ive seen( havent really cared that much) and it is just slightly weaker that the S3. Games run smooth as googles project butter.
4. The long-waited Jb update seem to come in the period 8-10th january. Howewer it may come as late as early feb

Performance and Battery in JB.

I was wondering. I looked everywhere and cannot find exact confirmation or Review. The 4.1.2 update is coming soon for the Optimus 4X and I read on 2-3 blogs that it'll apparently improve battery life. Is that true? Has anyone tried that themselves? From what I observe on my 4X that there are a couple of apps running in the system sucking up the battery. Will the future update fix this to extend its life? Sorry if this question was asked before and/or I've made a double post.

I'm an average user... Not much into games but I message a lot and play on YouTube use wifi and phone regularly... This is much improved for me over 10x
One day+?! Holy-- yeah that's surely an improvement to what I'm experiencing now. Is the phone running smoother as these blogs say? Any crashes/freezes or its a perfect charm. I'd just want to know what to expect...
Also, I've noticed that my phone tends to warm up from... almost everything. Is it still happening?
Edit: Sorry about this post... I rushed on asking this question without realizing that there's a Q&A section.. is there anyway to move the post? If not then I'll delete it.

Disabled them as in uninstalled them? And wow.. yeah that's surely a lot better than now. Better then my last phone.

My battery is still the same as that in v10f. I get about 3.5h of screen on time( mainly web browsing ) to reach 10%
How is the overall performance?

Depends on what you think is important. My phone is my "phone". I expect it to be as such. I can't imagine Web browsing for 3+ hours on my device. My Dell mini is better suited for that task and has better then 3+ hrs battery life. But maybe if your a gamer or a Facebook addict or Web browser cowboy, you find like people that use their device in the same manner as yourself and then compare notes.
Because of my job I'm often on the go and don't have the opportunity to recharge my device at leisure. It's nice to know it can be used as a phone all day and I'll still be able to call my wife at the end of that day. There if definitely improved battery in 20x after a few services are disabled and be r uninstalled. Prior to leaked JB my device required recharge after i got home. This is how I use my device and the condition under what I use it. These are my results but your milage may vary.
Yes the interface experience for me feels silky smooth. No lag, and no crashes or FCs. Best device I've owned to date.

its not specificly the browsing he did that makes the post usefull unlike some people posting battery charts its the fact that he posts screen on time rather then the chart.
the full charts are useless as you cannot see how often the phone was actualy used.
if i link you 2 charts 1 with slow battery drain in standby and no apps used at all (no screen on time) lasting 2 days exactly and 1 with near no battery in standby and 4 hours app use.
they both look the same if you post a battery chart but only the second one shows the potential of the battery life.
the first just shows the phone needed to be charged after 2 days the second showed the phone is capable of lasting 2 days with near no idle battery drain and gives a verry descent 4 hours screen on time.
a phone that is configured correctly and had good 3g/wifi signal and has 3g/wifi managed correctly, has no apps with adds and no apps that drain battery wil berely use any juice in standby leaving almost all the juice for screen on time.
a badlymanaged phone might drain up to 10% an hour because of adds and poort wifi/3g management/signal.
so in a perfect world (which we should aim for) only screen on/inapp time is important as there should be no other power hoggers.
