[Q] Installing Tomtom7 into Chinese Car Stereo/GPS on SD card - Off-topic

Hello all!
I appreciate this is kind off piste from the traditional topics, but I am starting to get desperate to find a straightforward solution to my issue. And as there will be people on this forum that have experience with Windows CE 5.0 as well as Tomtom 7, and getting them to run on all sorts of devices, I thought I would take a punt to see if anyone can provide advice.
First off, I have a Chinese double DIN car stereo unit installed in my car. website is http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/352281835/2_Din_Car_DVD_GPS_DVB.html
Now, the GPS portion of the system is a Windows CE platform running version 5. It launches into a shell application from which you select the navigator software, which is all based on an 2GB SD card. I believe it comes with 64MB of built in RAM, and the system is set up so that all software, applications, etc would be launched from an SD card.
The GPS system comes pre-loaded with iGo8 on the SD card. but my wife hates it, and she prefers tomtom (even thought the maps might be a little old). So I am trying to find a way to get the tomtom 7 software to work on this platform. So it will need to be installed into a 2GB SD card, and be compatible with wince5.0 with 64mb of ram.
can anyone point me in the right direction with this?
Thanks

...Shameless bump

Really? Is no one even able to sign-post me in the right direction?
I will take any advice, any idea, any opinion.
Please help!
Gene

Ive got no idea about sat navs..... Sorry

TomTom 5.21 on Alpine

Ah well that was a waste of a day.
Just got a Universal so I tried to set up my Alpine as a GPS unit as an excuse to keep it instead of being made to get rid of it by the other half, a combination of Hard Reset and then Soft Reset when it said "Customising in 3 seconds" I managed to get it with only 0.56MB used of Storage.
As I am using version 562 of the Great-Britain-Map I managed to squeeze the map folder onto the root directory of the Alpine (all 102MB of it), I then installed TomTom into the /Storage folder
Thinking "Ah ha! here we go!" I tried launching TomTom - went through all the "Language", "Voice" etc screens - and then disaster! "No maps found!", try as I might I can't get it to go past that screen. If I put in my SD card with the map on it then it finds the map but I don't want to have to use an SD card!!!
I've wasted 12 hours on this so far today, so if anyone has any bright ideas I'd greatly appreciate them, otherwise I'll bite the bullet and buy an additional card so I can use one for TomTom in the Alpine and one for Storage in the Universal.
G
Isn't it strange! You give up, go get a cup of tea and an idea pops into your head!
I created a folder called "storagecard" in the root directory of the Alpine (it won't let you create one called "storage card".
I moved the map from "/" to "/storagecard" started TomTom and voilla it works!!!
Alpine with no SD card running TomTom 5.21 - will see how it performs, but I now have an excuse for the missus!

Tea is great stuff, its what made this country great!
Just awaiting my delivery of TomTom and teh GPS so reading these thread with interest.
Tom
Interesting approach but I can't help asking why?
You are leaving very little memory for other applications and SD card prices are hardly extortionate these days. Can you get the Speed camera database in 'base' memory also?
Phil
Well I don't want to run any other applications so not too worried about there being a lack of memory and I wanted to find a use for the Alpine so that my wife wouldn't make me throw it out / sell it having just bought the Universal.
If I couldn't make it work then I'd have bought an SD card but it worked so I'm chuffed
Definition of annoying....
The GPS unit arrives - not the software!!!!!
What am I supposed to do this evening, sit and look at it?
Tom
Get VisualGPSCE (free, visualgps.net) and go for a walkabout, have a tinker just to see how the GPS receiver works

Co Pilot maps not visible after ROM upgrade??

Not sure if I'm doing something wrong here but after the 6.1 ROM upgrade I installed Co-Pilot again, running the lot from the desktop Central programme (makiing a point of deleting anything 2577 or Co-Pilot related on the storage card). Only thing I changed this time is that I installed the programme on the device and the map on the card. I got messages saying installs were successful.
Now though, when I launch Co-Pilot I get now map, just a white screen where map detail should be. I'm wondering if it's something to do with configuration or whether the split install is something it can't handle. Must say I'm not too impressed with this software overall and I find the Central desktop application abysmal. I'll have another couple of attempts but if I cannot install it the way I WANT IT to install I think I'll consign it to the scrap heap and get a dedicated sat nav for nav purposes. Wasn't the main reason I got the TyTn, given the problems I'm glad!!!!! I would have thought it quite reasonable that someone installing maps would wish to do so on their card rather than the device (given the size) and also reasonable that for speed of access to the system they'd put the programme on the device.
None of this is helped by the user documentation which is also pretty dire, esp when it comes to trouble shooting!!!!
Well after wasting hours messing around with this I have finally got it working but I can only get it to work with the map loaded to the device along with the programme. Must say that if this is supoosed to lead the way in terms of PDA sat nav I dread to think what the rest are like!!!! Apart from the fact that it refuses to recognise the map if not loaded to the device (regardless of how complete the uninstall, deletion of folders and re-booting etc) I have also tried to upload the other voices etc and regardless of what I try the device will not recognise they are there.
For me a truly awful application and the desktop application is worse!! I constantly get the message saying "alk.copilot.updater has stopped working", even after upgrading Central to the lastest version (and even that was an exercise in scouring the internet and rummaging for information). I'm really glad that sat nav/GPS was not a primary motivator for buying the TyTn. Maybe others work better on it??
Once I return to the UK I shall buy a dedicated sat nav and rip this Co-Pilot garbage out of my PDA and consign it to where it belongs. There are sat navs and sat navs and for me Co-Pilot is one that I would not give the time of day to.
CoPilot
Hi
You seem a bit stressed over copilot.
I have this working very well with wm6.1 on the kaiser.
I do not know how you have installed it and how you got any maps on to device most maps are over 100meg.
Can I suggest you remove copilot and reinstall to card only using a card reader and not using device connected to pc.
Over all I have found copilot to better in most areas over tomtom except poi handling, certainly the on screen information is better and gps lock is faster.
The above comment apply to CoPilot 7 live.
Mike
I certainly bleedin have ;-)
Ended up with both installed to device (using Abu Dhabi map only, maybe it's smaller). I may try stripping out and putting both the app and the map on the card. Works OK now with both on device but once I get any other maps to put on (but not likely at mo) I will struggle with storage on the device. I would have thought the programme would/could go on device and map(s) on the card. Seems not.
Co-Pilot Central seems a SHED load more of a problem than it's worth.
Well, having tried and tried I'm about to give up the ghost with CoPilot.
Only thing I have NOT yet tried as has been suggested is installing CoPilot to my card using a reader. I assume that once you have Co-Pilot Central installed on a PC there is some option to select that allows you to do this??
Essentially I have stripped Co-Pilot out of the TyTn. Hard Reset and deleted anything Co-Pilot from the SD card. I even uninstalled the awful desktop Central, deleted all folders and cleared the PC Registry. Having re-installed Central I then hooked up the device and chose option to install Co-Pilot Live. I chose the Storage card as location. After a successful install message I downloaded the map via the website having started Co-Pilot on the device and follwed the instructions. I installed THAT to the card to. Net result, open Co-Pilot, get 'Enjoy your map' message and, hep presto blank map!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Really is the most outstandingly crap software I have EVER come across. Not as if I'm trying some convoluted set-up or anything. Simply following the instructions and prompts. Time to scrap it I think!!!!!
Well. I give up. Unless I install BOTH on the device I CANNOT get the map/roads to show up in CoPilot.
Having mailed ALK customer support twice on this and got no reply (despite the 'We'll get back to you by end of next working day') I can only conclude the customer support is as poor as the website and the software. Time to put disc in bin!!!!
I have a log open at ALK support now in relation to this, having contacted them by another route. If I get a response that gets this to work I will post it here. Below is a fuller update of the processes I am going through to TRY and get this to work with BOTH installed on the Storage Card, just in case others come across this having searched re the same problem. I did LOADS of searches in all manner of engines and all manner of terms related to the problem but got no direct matches anywhere:
Systems information:
HTC branded TyTn II, Windows Mobile 6.1
SanDisk 8GB Micro SD card (not used in any other device)
CoPilot CD (free with TyTn II) - loads version 0.5.59.2 of CoPilot Central. After upgrade on device is complete version 7.0.2.258 of Live is installed
Windows Vista Business (SP1)
Procedure Followed (nothing else having worked!!!!):
1. Installed CoPilot Central to PC. Once loaded, open CoPilot Central (selecting upgrade later) under 'Plan Route' select Middle East map region (currently in UAE with work).
2. Engaged 'Flight' mode on phone to turn off potential interruption. Connect device to PC by USB. Installed CoPilot live when prompted to SD card.
3. Could not download maps at this time - kept getting device not recognised message.
4. Left device connected to PC. PC eventually indicated 'An update for CoPilot Live is available - do you want to update'. Selected "Yes".
5. Downloaded the update, it was updated to the device and it created a 2577 (auto run) folder on SD card.
6. Uninstalled current (OLD) Co-Pilot Live from device and delete ALL Co-Pilot related folders on card and device (root directory and Programs - if any).
7. Soft reset device.
8. Turn device back on. Took out and re-inserted SD card, prompted install of CoPilot Live.
9. Install CoPilot Live again to SD Card. This was a personal choice as I did not want the app or its maps on the device (too much space), esp as some maps are large.
10. Soft reset device.
11. Connect device to PC by USB to get internet connection. Followed on screen instructions (got several messages - "Invalid Device - Please refer to provider" at this stage but EVENTUALLY go site to allow me to download!!!). Saved download to 'My Documents' on device and checked 'Open file once downloaded'.
12. Followed install instructions and install map to SD Card also.
13. Soft reset device.
14 Open CoPilot Live on device. Hey Presto - NO MAP!!!! All I get is a blank screen with a couple of POIs indicating Mosques in god knows where!!!!!!!
Despite this massively convoluted process I STILL cannot get CoPilot to work and show its maps on a storage card installation from the computer based CD which came with the TyTn II. Later I uninstalled both from the SD card and re-installed both to the device and the map shows up????????????
Perhaps understandably I am about to give up and buy a dedicated Sat Nav!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HI, dear Empgamer,
Me too have same problems with the HTC TyTn II, windows 6.0 still because 6.1 has too many complaints. Therefore I did not instal. I got co-pilot DVD instanlled on PC. Got one Free city map as my choice but unfortunatley did not work. I have tried many times the same way as mentioned above on this forum wihtout any success. No map . Blank Screen although copilot seems working and displaying stupid options like I am going to fly to Mars.
Surprisingly no words from HTC nor from Copilot.
CoPilot
Hi
What version of Copilot are you trying to install,
If you have the dvd install using a card reader its faster and will not be interupted.
I have it working flawlessly om my kaiser with Duttys rom
Hi both
I am using the HTC stock 6.1 ROM as I am quite happy with that, it works fine on my device and I have the new video driver cab installed too.
Strangely I CAN get CoPilot to work fine if BOTH programme and map are installed on the device. Trying the below does NOT work:
1) Programme on device, map on SD card
2) Programme and map on SD card
I have an open question on ALK tech support site regarding this and will wait a response. I have to say I have neither the time or inclination to mess about with this any more having wasted HOURS installing, re-installing, soft and hard re-setting, installing and updating etc. All to no avail. Either I will find eventually how to get both working from an SD card or I will eventually uninstall CoPilot, bin it, and buy a stand-alone sat nav system.
I didn't really buy the device as a sat nav anyway so it's no big deal but it would be nice to be able to get it to work. I cannot see what is so complex or unorthodox about what I am trying to do. I do have a card reader but my CoPilot came on a CD and when CoPilot Central (abysmal software) installs I can see no option anywhere to get it to interface with a storage card reader either directly or by way of a wizard. See above re version numbers.

Diamond GPS applications?

I've had a Diamond for about 2 days now and i'm trying to figure out how to get a decent GPS application for it. I know the phone has GPS, but i'm guessing it's possible to install an actual GPS program in it, instead of just looking at your little blip move on the "google maps" app... I've also heard from several other forums that there's an "update package" that XDA developers have made for the diamon, that removes the laggy interface among other things. So if anyone has a direct link to it, could you please post it?
Thanks for the help, and sorry for my.... lack of knowledge to put it delicately, but my last phone was a Nokia 5140i
TomTom Navigator 7, Route 66, CoPilot, iGo8..... take your pick!
I use TomTom Navigator 7, works great! just like a standalone TomTom unit!
I have heard people talk about TT7 but where can you get it from. I understand the only place so far is when it comes bundled with the Touch Diamond on O2 in Germany. Does anybody else know where else I can get it from?
TT6 does work on the Touch Diamond. I just put the internal storage into "storage card" mode rather than "activesync" and moved all the files from the TT SD card to it. When I unplugged the sync cable TT sprung into life and installed, after I had fed it the correct code.
My TT6 is pretty old (6.01) and I can't get TT Home to update it to the newer versions. I notice that TT have on their website an update for HTC units dated January 2007. Would that work with my Touch Diamond and would it be any better?
Sorry in advance if my first post has broken any rules.

I have only been here a couple of hours and am beginning to think that this must be one of the unfreindliest forums I have ever come across. Where is the usual hand holding and help for newbies?
The topic that Zyborg linked to was mainly about using the internal GPS system and did not answer either the original poster's question nor mine. Unless there are some really deep meanings in it that a stupid newbie like me can't pick up.
Installing TomTom, iGO
Ok, i need some serious help when it comes to installing TomTom, iGo or any other of these GPS apps. All the readme: s say you're suppose to copy the folders to your SD card, but obviously the Diamond uses internal memory, so this can't be done. I've tried plugging in the Diamond to my computer, choosing "storage card" instead of ActiveSync, and copying the iGo folder into the program files directory of the internalmemory. But nothing happens. Even if I open the iGo .exe from the Diamond itself later on. So again, can someone please tell me how to install one of these things?

For how long did you search: 3 minutes???
Search and search and read.
And welcome.
Suggest you look at the link specifically posted by zyborg before you commenting! It has nothing to do with the posted questions!
I did not say or suggest I had searched before posting, but boy do some of you get touchy with new people who don't know "the rules". Suggest you read the last sentence of my original post.
Still - nice welcome smily at the end

Hi,
could you tell me where I can get it please ?
thanks first
peterc10,
i think this is a forum for developers.
and developers like research, searching, trying, making mistakes, and everything. even new developers.

Satnav compatability with Diamond.

I'm aware that this has been covered in a few other threads and many of you have GPS software running on your Diamonds already. Many of you also seem to be having problems.
I noticed today while looking at the PDA/Smartphone offerings from ALK (CoPilot), Garmin and Tomtom that the Diamond is only listed as being a compatible phone for ALK CoPilot - thay have actually brought out a dedicated edition of the software to take advantage of the phone's high-res screen.
So, those of you using Garmin Mobile XT and TomTom Navitagor 6 software, how did you get on with setting it all up? Especially Garmin Mobile XT, as it seems to only come on an SD card?
(Incidentally, I have seen posts referring to TomTom7, but on their website I can only see verison 6, so I'm referring to that).
I'm only just after putting TomTom7 on mine. It works a treat (admittedly having trouble with the GPS reception, but the actual application works fine!
Took a while to get the install working right, mainly due to not knowing where to put the maps folder (NB: It goes on the ROOT of the Internal Storage)
I maybe would like to try some others, just to compare, but prolly like many people, after buying the phone, don't want to be shelling out more notes for the S/W!
Would be good to get a list of what works and some install instructions!
And a list of the best GPS tweaks to get the most from it!
Where did you get TomTom7 from? Its not even for sale on the UK TomTom website.

[Q] Format 16gb sd card from hd7

Hello, I can't seem to find anything related to this on google or your wonderfull website ( thanks to you folks i was able to root my htc desire and install cyanogenmod, as well as unlock it from the network), any way to the point, I switched network providers because ive had it with telus, long story short, i went to bell and had to get a new phone, so i tried this htc hd7, n i kick myself in the teeth, but im stuck with it now... n now that i can use my desire on any network, i popped my bell sim in and am using that, so, i want to use the 16 gb class 4 sandisk sd card out of the hd7 in my htc desire, windows doesnt recognize it, nor does kubuntu, and nor does the format utility windows comes with, the format fails... and of course the phone wont read it or format it through recovery or in OS, ive also tried a program called low level format tool, it sees it, but results in multiple errors when formatting, any thoughts?
you need a Nokia phone to format it. The SD card is locked.
Does it need to be a specific model? The only nokia device i have is an air card for my laptop and theres no memory card settings, i think i have a couple buddies that own nokia phones though, damn windows phail 7

You must have not looked on Google very hard:
"format WP7 SD card"
Actually, thats the first thing i searched, which is also how i discovered the low level format utility, you can have absolute faith i've searched anything i could think of and explored multiple options that i could think of, including a kodak easy share c183 (fairly new digital camera) and multiple sd card recovery applications designed for digital cameras, ive tried using linux and both windows/linux OS disks, im thinking, now that the bootloader has been exploited for the the hd7, if i can port either kubuntu mobile or some third party android build to it, i would gain access to the card, then mess around with that, but theres gotta be some way i can format this bugger. ive also come across the thread that includes using the nokia phone, but i dont have one. this is the only other thing i could find besides the llft, is there anyone else out there that has wanted to use there 16 gigger out of the hd7 for some other device after upgrading to a 32gb card? i have skimmed these forums as well and turned up nothing
well i just came across this post and aim on the same boat... i have 4 16g and going crazy i will hate to see this 4 16 sd go to trash... just cause mocosoft have play bad with us.....
ps just like guitarjunkie i have try all i can think-off
well im going to render this question unasnwerable i think for the time being, until we can find an application that works, if there wll ever be such a time, i will keep posted if i find one, thank you almostinsane for your time and input about the nokia phone, and to my boys from microsoft, blast you all, creators of wp7 to eternal damnation! @#$%&*(random curse words) power to the linux community!
Hmmm my friend formatted his memory, but no longer has the software that he did that with... =\
Try this:
http://www.pendriveapps.com/format-fat32-larger-than-32gb/
If it failed try:
http://tokiwa.qee.jp/EN/Fat32Formatter/
Try the whole re-initialization thing...
If both failed, try to find something else which can destroy the partition table for the memory, then rebuild it using Disk Manager.
