Is there a way to have custom boot animation for the kernel? If so, how can it be done?

I believe there is a thread floating around here on that topic, also I believe there is a video on mobiletech.

That's not the kernel splash, that is thee param.lfs boot splash that comes before the kernel image.
There are 3 things you see at boot: bootsplash, kernel splash, boot animation(stock uses the same boot splash and kernel splash so there is no visible change). The first and last can be changed easily like the guy said mobiletechvideos, for the kernel you will have to compile a whole kernel yourself there is no way to just swap the image.

Those are the beginning of the boot animation the "s" is the second part of the same animation. Kernel splashes are static images.
Cool. Learned something new. Thanks.
no the kernel splash can be an animation. and i believe the 3g animation is the kernel splash on a stock rom.
glitterballs has a kernel with animated splash, it says kernel panic upload mode, i guess just to test the concept and freak people out a little if they are not paying attentino to his first post, if he ever returns and his thread is reopened maybe he has a way to change it. or maybe if he postes his patches and sources others will copy it.
What peaked my interest was onyx kernel actually has a different boot animation but im using speedmod because of the problems people have with onyx
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You should try onix before passing judgement. Some phones like it, some dont. Mine was ok with it, but I thought I would try paragon kernel because several people had success.
Reason why I'm not using Onyx now is I couldn't play .avi files with Video Player, but it worked fine with speedmod.
Good to see you at least tried it. Too many people here go simply on word of mouth (myself included at times).
Curious, which version did you try?
I went with 1.0.1,2 and then 5. Basically updated to it with the firefly update, updated again when the new version was released but skipped a few because of the issues other people were having but went back when 1.0.5 was released but I had to switch because of the video player problem.
All in all, I think it was a great kernel, and I would still probably be using it if it didn't have that problem cause I like to watch vids on the bus home from work.

Fixes and Extras:
- Dual Boot Support
- Added Swype
- Added sqlite3
- Added 3 Button Fix
- Added Ad Blocking
- Fixed the build.prop fingerprint so you can see all apps in the market
- Fixed root not working
- Fixed Busybox symlinks
Known Issues:
- GPS broken
- Home is back, back is home
- Camera
- Only mounts internal sdcard
- Data works, however it takes 2-5 minutes to connect after boot. Works fine after.
Important Things To Know:
1. This rom duel boots and operates off /data. You cannot boot into clockwork recovery. SO, in order to return to your previously installed rom, all you must do is reboot into download mode and flash your previous kernel. I will provide a link where you kind find a list of current 2.2 kernels in a .tar format so you can flash using odin via download mode.
2. On boot, you will see a white fuzzy screen for about 3 seconds, it will not effect anything so don't panic.
3. YOU MUST currently have voodoo enabled before flashing this rom!!!!!!! I suggest just download and flashing our stable 2.2 rom, nero v3 and enabling voodoo, then flash this.
4. Yes, this is ACTUALLY Gingerbread, not a clone.
Installation:
- Install like you would any other rom via clockwork recovery. BUT LIKE I SAID, if you want to return to your previously installed rom, all you must do is reboot into download mode and flash your previous kernel.

I would like to try this, since it's a release from TW, but I'm just wondering exactly how stable is this release.
As stated in very large red letters at the top, this is EXPERIMENTAL.
EXPERIMENTAL!!!!
Don't cry when you break something or when something doesn't work. This is a proof of concept release (IMO) AND WILL get better. Let people that know what they are doing play with this.
Great Work!
I was really surprised by just how fast this was, great job to everyone working on this! The CRT screen off feature is absolutely sick, the grainy youtube videos really don't do it justice!
ok now i have problem getting to download mode using either terminal emulator or the adb as now my phone dont get recognized by the pc........any suggestions masters??
edit:
got it back to nero v3 where i left it hehe...... i got to download mode by hardware key combos....terminal emulator and adb didnt worked in my case.....so those without hardware keys working dont try it........anyways my vibrant got to taste the gingerbread
@sombionix
do we have to delete anything on the phone after reflashing 2.2 kernel?? is it the folder named gingerbread inside the data partition? Im getting kernel panics after reverting to nero ...any thoughts??
Edit2....kernel pAnic dissapeared after couple of reboots
Sombionix, install.sh calls for sbl.bin in updates, but there isn't one there. Am I missing something?
I just replaced my device, so I'll probably wait a few days.....

I flashed earlier this morning and everything was safe. The only thing I saw was that sometimes I'd get hard resets (all the way back to the "Vibrant" screen). It would then come back up and I'd have to wait a couple of minutes before the data would come back. Again, as Som pointed out, it's not really a fully-functional thing at this point. It's completely safe to do, though, so long as you're familiar with Odin.
When you get sick of it, pull the battery and then put it back in. Hold both volume up and down and plug in the USB cord and BAM! You should be back in download mode to flash the kernel back to how it was before. I used the JL5 Voodoo modem.
Cool Demo, data worked right away for me. I had hard resets just like other posts have said, and will wait until the stable version. Thanks somb.

Yep. After you flash your kernel though Odin, you're back to normal. Flash away.
Edit: The only thing us that you'll want to disable Voodoo before flashing a new rom, just in case.

Once you flash a kernel via Odin your phone will reboot automatically back to your previously installed rom. No other flashing is required, although you can if you want.
Also, you don't have to disable voodoo if you are flashing another rom that has a voodoo kernel included. However, you must disable voodoo if you are flashing a rom with anon voodoo kernel.

Hello again, going on my 4th new thread tonight (please no comments, Let's just say im starting to like phones ) Well anyways I wanted to max out my phone with an overclock kernal but I would rather find one that's compatible rather than brick my new phone. Could anyone suggest one? I tried searching the forums for a compatible kernal with no luck. Thanks

Glitterballs will work with that. You will want to download voltage app. I think it is in the op
Where exactly is it? I'm pretty much a noob and the only files i've downloaded and installed are .zips, so if you could explain that would be awesome.
What kernel does darkeys user?
Download sgs kernel flasher from market

To be safe disable lagfix
Download kernel
Open sgs kernel flasher
Click on choose kernel
Select ......
Navigate to your download folder
Select kernel
Select flash kernel
After boot, kernel will be updated
Go into recovery
Advanced ulk options
Lagfix
Enable all ext 4
Go back
Tweaks
Click on all options except last
Go back
Reboot system
Select back up and restore
When booted up download voltage app
Kernel comes pre set to 1.2 ghz oc
I got until the recovery menu when I couldn't find the advanced ULK thing all I could find is Advanced and i couldn't find lagfix. I pressed something like fix permissions and then it fixed permissions. I rebooted into a screen that had Galaxy S I9000 with samsung at the bottom. Then a robotic lady voice said something long that i didnt catch and then it rebooted into that screen again and this time i listened and it said restore operation and rebooted so i took out the battery and it just keeps doing that. Please help!!!!!
Let it do it. Let it load. Voodoo is enabling. I was wrong about the lag fix on the kernel. Do not pull the battery again
It takes a couple of minutes. Man, I am sorry I have been using a different kernel and got crossed on what lag fix it has. I hope it loads, please in future do not panic and pull battery so quickly
Alright I'm sorry i just freaked when I couldn't even get into recovery mode. I let it sit but my dad is a senior member of the site and he tells me these stories of how people have new phones and they brick them out of the box, so when I heard that weird voice i flipped. How long does it usually take?
Couple of minutes. No more then ten
Ok It's been a long time and it's still just sitting there saying restore operation. At this point I don't care about the kernal, what can I do to get my phone back to normal or even factory reset???
Wait. Do you have allot of apps? It is converting all your data
As long as it is talking we are still moving along
Respond to my pm
No I just got this for christmas. I have ytt3r's version of Darky's ROM and as i was looking over it, I noticed all these little things like texts and there was ALOT of them.
Hello,
Sorry to sound like a complete noob in advance!
I have a new Samsung Captivate I896 on Rogers in Canada. I have ryans OCLF lagfix installed atm but i'm really interested in flashing this rom (will be my first one) and am wondering if it will work on this phone.
Also, is it just a backround fix? Will I still be able to use launcher pro, and will my phone still look the same with Froyo 2.2?
thanks in advance!

Speedmod is not a ROM, but a kernel.
As to your other questions, you have a LOT of reading left to do.

Agreed. Just to be save do alot of reading before attempting anything really lol. There are stickies in the Development section start there.
Ok so I did a little more reading. I896 and I897 are essentially the same. I'm not flashing a rom, just a kernel, so there should be no issue with the 3G problem mentioned in the wiki.
It won't change my rom or anything about the device other then how the filesystem works.
Thanks!

Hi, I'm pretty new here too, and I have to tell you that know one will give you a straight answer. There's a lot of' tribal knowledge', and it seems that people would rather teach you how to unbrick your phone than to flash it without issue.
First of all, hook up to Samsung Kies and update your phone to Froyo. If you are on Rogers it's an official update, don't worry about flashing any other roms yet.
Next, Use the option in the OLCF to unlagfix.
Next, you will need to root your phone. OCLF is practically obsolete, as the developer does not update anymore. Your best bet is Superoneclick. Read all instructions first. It is very easy and effective.
After you have the phone rooted, you can now install Titanium Backup. This will save all of your apps, contact info, settings, virtually everything on the phone, it will save them to a folder on your external SD. drop and drag this folder to your desktop in case anything goes wrong. I never had a problem.
You should backup your kernel. I used Neldar's SGS Kernel Flasher. It will save your kernel as an 'update.zip' in your root folder. Drag this to your desktop and put it into a folder called 'i897 orig kernel' or what have you, in case something goes wrong. I never had a problem.
Now you can flash SpeedMod. The developer's website, which is linked to in the thread's first post, will walk you though it. You will first need to install ODIN. The SpeedMod developer has a step-by-step on how to flash SpeedMod using ODIN on the developer's page. Make sure you choose a Speedmod Kernel that is intended for the Captivate, not the I9000, and that you chose the one for ODIN, not the ClockWorkMod version. Follow the steps in the Developer's page.
When you have done that, reboot into recovery mode and you should see Green Text. From here you can enable the lagfix and other tweaks. use the volume keys to select the option you want and the power button to select. under the options, it will show you which tweaks you have enabled or disabled.
Remember to select the most stable SpeedMod release, the one that is posted in the Forum (K12U-T4) is a TEST VERSION, hence the 'T'. The latest stable version as of this writing was K12T, as posted in the developer's page. I have had great results with this one.
You may find that you don't need to flash a custom ROM, I have found this setup very satisfying.
Good Luck!
Wow,
Thank you so much clemmie! That's was succinct and very helpful, especially the part about the proper way to back up my stuff.
I uninstalled OCLF just now, and it seems my phone runs at the same speed (aka fast) as it did with the lag fix installed!
Going to flash this kernel tonight or tomorrow, I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks again!
Good to hear. There would be a lot less smoke and mirrors if people would just be straightforward and post step by step instructions with links, to give people what they want. I hope what worked for me will work for you, and I encourage you to share what you learn as well.
Kernel flash done! Screen is initially very different looking thanks to the amoled mod. Success! Backed up, thanks for all the help.
hey clemmie,
i heard that there's some issues with voice quality due to the Speedmod kernel being initially i9000-based and that it's recommended to flash a i9000-based modem. Are you having any issues with using a stock i896 modem or do you recommend something else?
Yeah, that is true, but I haven't had any problems with the stock modem. The phone works as well in-call as any other I've owned. I wonder if there is a difference between the AT&T build vs. the Rogers build. It seems that it's the AT&T folks that have issues.
Hi,
I've been wanting to do this but I'm a bit wary if this will put the ATT splash screen on boot as well. Also, I like how my phone looks like now with ADW launcher and beautiful widgets installed, I'm just wondering if installing this mod would change my appearance settings too.

Are you on Rogers? Earlier versions of the SpeedMod kernel had the AT&T splash screen, but newer versions have a simple black screen similar to the stock Samsung boot logo.
Installing the SpeedMod kernel will not change the configuration, apps, or settings of your apps. There are some settings that you can tweak in recovery mode but they are mostly file system tweaks. You will however notice that screen resolution is sharper. Your phone will run smoother and more efficiently with better battery life. You can still flash any custom or stock ROM with SpeedMod or without SpeedMod.
Yes I am on Rogers. However, I can't seem to find the stable version K12T that you mentioned on your instructions from the developer's page.
If you click on the hotlinked 'SpeedMod' in my 'tutorial' post, it will take you to the XDA page dedicated to the SpeedMod revisions. Right now there is a 13A Test version posted, but the latest stable version is now K12U. If you click where it says 'more info and downloads', it will take you to the developer's(Hardcore) blog, 'Tourist In Paradise'. The revisions are listed there. I would bookmark this page and check back frequently, as Hardcore is constantly updating. However, I'll link you to the latest stable release for ODIN, K12U:
https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B-3n...WJmNTUtZDVmNThmMmNhZTRm&export=download&hl=en
Thanks for that! I just did this and although it didn't show the ATT boot screen, it shows the Galaxy S I 897 screen after the I 896 though. Thanks again!
Glad to hear you had success. Not so hard after all, eh?
After using this for a day or two:
I can't believe how fast my phone is. I thought it was fast before with (and then without) the oclf. I can barely keep up!
Battery life seems improved.
Screen is perfect. The lowest brightness setting is much better and more comfortable for low light usage.
I lost 1000 points off quadrant, but quadrant doesn't matter.
The only real downside is call quality took a hit. It's a bit static-y and echo-y.
I'll look into this though and see if I can find a solution, but if you have any tips let me know.
Looks like you are a candidate for a modem flash. Let me know if you find something that works, there is a lot of info on swapping modems for SpeedMod. Maybe I'll try one too!
Hey clemmie (or anyone), if I want to install voodoo lagfix - how abouts would I do that if the SpeedMod kernel already comes with / is based on sztupy's Universal Lagfix (enhanced) and if voodoo is a kernel itself (unless I'm wrong about this)?
If you flash the SpeedMod kernel, voodoo lagfix comes integrated with the kernel. It's a master of enabling it from the recovery menu.

First off, this place is amazing, but I don't get why I can't post on a dev page until I get 10 posts? I really wanted to post where this should be more relivant than here.
Ok, if anyone has flashed Boog's KJ3 Kernel with bootanimation.zip, and have had problems getting any boot animation, other than the stock boot animation, to work try this. Make sure to flash the kernel in CWM Recovery, not Odin, or bootanimation.zip may not show in system/media. It wouldn't on my Captivate anyway. Even after that I had problems, and had to figure this out on my own. After looking at the installed bootanimation.zip using Root Explorer, I noticed it showed RWXRWXRWX -> sanim.zip in the lower right corner. I figured that meant to rename it to sanim.zip. Nope, it means that when bootanimation.zip plays, it needs whaterver boot animation you want played, renamed as sanim.zip, and pasted in the system/media folder along with the original bootanimation.zip that was put in there when you flashed Boog's KJ3 Kernel.
Now in the same place I was going to post this, there is a comment stating to flash back to the stock KJ3 Kernel when done modifying your phone. I did this, and then the bootanimation stopped working. Went in to my main folder where bootanimation.sh, the script that is installed when you flash Boog's Kernel that tells bootanimation.zip to run sanim.zip, is located, and it was gone. Re-flashed Boog's Kernel, it's there, and working again. So, do I still have to flash back to the stock KJ3 Kernel, or is running Boog's Kernel ok?
One more thing, after all of this I noticed I have lost my H+ notification in my status bar, and now only shows 3G. Is this something to do with KJ3, or is it one of the kernels that I have flashed? I have only flashed two custom kernels for KJ3. Boog's Kernel, and one that deodexes, root's, and zipaligns. I know it's not supposed to help any, but when I had the H+ notification I was getting way better results on speedtest. I was getting over 2,000 down, and 800-1000 up. Now my best since losing the H+ is around 1,500 down, and 350 up.
I can answer the H+ question: the H+ was purely cosmetic. You were still getting 3G speeds. The newer leaks removed the H+ and replaced it with the proper logo.
Boot animation is a scrip in the kernel. You change the kernel It will stop using the none stock animation. To be honest 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 kernels modified for bootanimations are kinda clunky at the moment. Considering they are working with these kernels with out a source is saying alot though. As for the H its a cosmetic error.
Thank you to the both of you.
I liked having the H+ even if it was just a cosmetic goof. Must be I was just getting a real good connection that day when I was getting into the 2,000 area on download.
Sorry if I came off as cocky about the 10 post rule. Was just really frustrated I couldn't bring these subjects up on the thread where most of this was already being discussed.
Hi,
as the title states I am looking for an Eclair ROM for the Nexus One with SLCD support.
I tested official ROMs, though couldnt find any which supports the SLCD, which means:
I know how to flash it and the process itself worked, but the display was just off when the mobile booted up. Buttons worked but the touch display didnt.
It needs to be an Android 2.1 or 2.0 and the Hardware is also fixed: Nexus One with SLCD.
I was looking for a week now and couldnt find a suitable ROM.
Any help is welcome, thx in advance.
Cheers, stas
There is none in existence. Nexus didn't come in SLCD variant until Froyo was released.
Would it be possible to get Eclair running on the Nexus One with a homebrew linux kernel? I mean: Is the slcd driver just some kernel issue or do I need something more?
Anyone knows a way of how to make it work?
Cheers, stas
Have you seen this post?

I have seen this post and tried to use a stock eclair rom and unpack the boot.img to replace the kernel with an own one. I took the kernel config off a froyo image and build a kernel. though after repacking and flashing the device didnt boot. I could try to use a froyo kernel with slcd support in an eclair boot.img, would do it tomorrow.
Thanks, stas
I actually managed to boot up android 2.1 but couldnt get the wifi working.
Steps I did:
flash boot.img from froyo
flash system.img from eclair
that way the display was working and the phone booted up. But the wifi didnt work. After some reading I encountered that the kernel modules are located in the system.img and the kernel is as expected in boot.img. Since both are from different branches the module for the wifi didnt match the kernel. So I extracted the appropriate kernel module from froyos system.img and pushed it on the mobile. That way the wifi could be activated but still could not connect to the AP. How ever I leave it for now and try a different approach.
Thanks for your time.
You can try to take any custom kernel for Froyo, look at the files being flashed besides boot.img, grab all those files from Eclair ROM and flash them on Froyo ROM. This way you'll get most of the functionality in the kernel.
