Weird Firmware update? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys put my phone on kies today and a new firmware version is ready to download came up..
i thought yes i have somehow got gingerbread..
when it completed it says froyo 2.2.1 firmware version what the hell is this??
My phone is in the UK on Three network i900nejs2

there are many versions of 2.2.1 maybe you just got a newer version.
there is a way to spoof kies into making you get the very latest release. or you could just flash gingerbread yourself through Odin.
or try one of the many many custom GB ROMs

how do i spoof?
and does it matter that my phone is network locked to three?
can i debrand it or watever?

Simple answer its 3 Uk latest update to 2.2 .1 comes after Froyo 2.2 .
Some put it out others have been very late .
jje

We will be seeing parallel versions of 2.2.1 and 2.3 for quite a while....get used to it. Not all carriers will be so anxious to send out gb to the masses, and many are still on 2.2.
Remember we may be champing at the bit for gingerbread, but likely the reaction of John and Judy Averageuser will be "Dammit....ANOTHER update!!!???"

It will most likely go through kies first then odin users who downloaded the roms. I don't think samsung does over the air updates.

Ah i see. I havent installed kies. So it would be directly from samsung hey? Thanks much for that info!

Samsung push there updates through their Kies program. Once it's released you will also be able to flash through Odin.

Hey there. To answer your question, no. You don't need to upgrade anything before the Froyo version is officially released. Having said that, Samsung seems to have been working behind the scenes to fix quite a few bugs notably the GPS issue. So, it is always a good idea to upgrade to a newer firmware.
Again, upgrading or not really is a very subjective thing. Most people decide what firmware to use based on their application for their phones. If you are happy with the overall performance of the phone, stick to the current version. If you are not, upgrade to the latest version indicated by Kies and that should be it. Your choice really....
Cheers....

kies always shows you the latest firmware available for your device.. so dossent matters if you upgrade to this jh2 firmware or not.. in the future if they release the froyo firmware kies will show you a notification that a latest version of operating system is available...
now talking about you should or shouldnot upgrade to this firmware.....
as skiddhard said it depends on what you think of your current firmware.. but if kies shows you that an upgrade is available that means there might be some changes and improvement in the firmware that is released.. but it may or may not be usefull to you... firstly do you feel a major kind of lag in ur current firmware?? if yes then you should definitely go in for the firmware upgrade because the newer version of 2.1 upgrades are definitely faster than the previous once
Thanks Guys. I ended up updating it, i havent noticed any difference, so thats good in my books *phew* in the future, if it aint broke, dont fix it.

I live in the UK
i live in the uk and my samsung kies program itself updated, the offered me a firware update to 2.2.1 after this, but no before. apparently, looking at a list of the available types the t-mobile uk 2.2.1 isnt out yet, so i dont know where mine came from, i think the thing i looked at tld me it was a portuguese version. very odd, especially as my phone jst came back from samsung repair and they said the had reflashed 2.2 onto it

[Q] Update problem with Kies

I wanted to check if Android 2.3.* (Gingerbread) was available yet on KIES 2.0.0.11014_49.
However, KIES gives me a message that my phone can't be updated.
Yes, I rooted, hacked and cracked my phone just to get the Android 2.2 (Froyo) on it. (December 2010...)
So my phone is now labeled as having Baseband version: I9000XXJPP
Is Samsung punishing people for not waiting 9 months for an update?
Anyway, not important, how do I make sure that I can receive updates again?
Or should I not wait again.....and just follow one of the tutorials for a 2.3 update?
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to answer!
Cheers'
Read it slowly .
GINGERBREAD Android 2.3 HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED by Samsung .
Beta version is in the wild that's all for now .
jje
I didn't take your advice, so I read it real quick.
Anyway, thank you for replying!
2.2???? Man that's ancient!
They may look the same but 2.2.1 is miles ahead in terms of performance. Lagfix is a must on 2.2 but optional on .1.
So yep, don't wait again - take the 'Odin/samfirmware' path if you want official 2.3 asap when it comes out. CWM is also handy to have for custom roms (optional).
You will never want to use kies again.
Kies Registry patcher can help fake region, but odin/samfirware for ease of use, access to ALL firwares including betas and simpler to save firmwares if you ever need to reflash again quickly.
BTW: you don't need to be rooted to upgrade to stock firmware from another region, just the correct registry.

[Q] Do I have stock firmware installed?

Hi guys,
After messing around with kernels and getting a non responding P1000, I managed to install from Samfirmware, what i believe is stock Gingerbread (Europe).
Everything looks and works fine, but I just want some reassurance that I've downloaded/installed it correctly.
My system details are:
PDA: P1000XXJQ1
PHONE: P1000XXJPZ
CSC: P1000OXAJQ1
Firmware version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: P1000XXJPZ
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XXJQ1
The only reason I want reassurance is when I connect the tab to Kies, the message "this version cannot be updated" displays.
Is it the fact that this is the latest firmware, and therefore no more updates is available?
Thank you in advance and would be much appreciated and reassuring to get an answer for all you kind people.
If you have a tab that was bought throughg a specific carrier then Kies might not be able to update the firmware.
I have a GTab from Telstra in Australia and using the stock firmware I also get this message. All flashing must be done by either ODIN or HEIMDALL. CWM works so long as I don't need to restock anything....
If you do decide to change roms, make sure you check to see if the bootloaders aren't locked as some of the firmware from samfirmware were found to be resulting in problems...
Cheers...
I had exactly the same message from Kies when I tried to revert back to a stock Gingerbread rom. It seems that there isn't an official Samsung release of GB for Tab P1000 in the UK (if that's where you are) so it doesn't recognise it.
Only way I could get it to detect an official release was with a Froyo ROM.
The JQ1 was released not to Europe, but to Italy.

Yes that's right. Im in the UK. So from what i understand, only way to fully revert back and install Official gingerbread is by reverting than earlier froyo firmware and then connecting Kies thks way, then have it detect and install the newly released gingerbread?

Hi there, yeah i kinda thought the firmware i installed was the Italian release, as the date in Firmware was May, not July when the.official gingerbread was released.
Yep, that's how I understand it. However I probably will not even bother with Samsungs UK GB release as there are much better 3rd party GB options out there already. I'm running BOCA 1.5 and it is so fast - it dosn't have any Samsung apps or TouchWiz, but I haven't missed them.

Ha! Just found the XDA app, makes posting and browsing on here so much easier.
Yeah i would have thought 3rd party options would be better running as they'll omit all the bloatware that comes with the official release. I was just thinking more about the option for the future should i have any reason at all to revert back to legit stock.
There's so many recommendation on which custom Rom to install, i think I'll have to spend some time going through the forums to understand which one will be best for me.
For now, Im gonna stick with this working GB (albeit Italy release) as for now it works and I've not had any problems with doing what i want out of it.

The lastest gb released isn't UK, its for Orange Spain.

Flash different fimware

Hey developers,
I allways used to have HTC's, but now I have a SGS I9000. With HTC I know my way with flashing and stuff but now I got an issue. I don't know if this will brick my phone and I can't find too much information about with the search function.
So here goes, I got a hungarian I9000 from a friend, though I'm dutch. Now I want to update the phone to android 2.3 but there are no PAN (hungarian) updates available from Samsung, I tried the registry key hack with KIES but then my phone would disconnect as soon as I would start the update. Then I realised I could flash firmware with 2.3 from another compatible phone version, like the Dutch one. So I downloaded KIES and the dutch firmware but then I realised that if the firmware is not compatible with my version of the I9000 I would probably (hard/soft)brick my phone.
Also, when I put in *#272*IMEI# there is no option to choose between countries for me, which I read all over the internet there should be.
So please advice me in flashing a new stock 2.3 ROM, I really want it to be stock android
Thanks in advance
Somewhere in here is a guide for flashing stock jvu 2.3.6 with Odin it only takes 5 minutes once you have downloaded everything
