Can't do task 29. Next best solution? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile ROM Development

I can't do a task 29 on my phone because my volume down button is broken. By broken I mean that the plunger on the switch itself has come out. No way to get back into the bootloader unless I want to jab around inside the switch with a screwdriver. That being the case, what is the next best option for a clean install? I have been having increasing problems with ROM stability lately (sense hanging/restarting, sluggish performance, apps spontaneously closing right after launch, etc). Each new ROM seems, if anything, to be getting worse, even right out of a fresh install (did the hard reset after flashing thing, didn't really help).
Edit: Before anyone asks, I have mostly been using the 6.5.3 build Energy Cookie 2.0 ROMs.

one thing ive learned is i dont need task29
what i do is flash euro stock 6.5.5
and all is well
then i flash whatever rom i need
i hope it works for you

That's true. if you flash the official rom, it always clean the ram first before flashing it. not the best option but it's nonetheless working if you do not want to or cannot use task29.

Thanks. I was considering that so I will give that a shot next time I flash. Thanks.

T-Mobile UK

Been following this site for weeks and it is getting more popular eacha nd every time someone buys a Diamond phone, so keep up the good work.
I have finally decided to see what I can do with mine by upgrading the ROM and I would appriciate any advice you guys can give me as i am a totally newbie.
Here are the details:
It is on T-Mobile (UK)
Version -
1.37.110.3 WWE
06/20/08
1.00.25.03
Thanks
Hello there!
Not sure what you mean by upgrading the rom? Guess you mean applying a cooked rom?
A cooked rom is one thats been customised and is flashed over the top of your current rom, in your case probably a "stock" or out of the box/factory rom.
First thing to do in your case would be to upgrade the Radio. You may well need to run the HardSPL (I needed developer edition) and then apply the radio upgrade.
From then on, its up to you which cooked rom you run as they all have advantages and disadvantages. For example, im running the Diamond TLR rom as I don't like touchflo (i think its a gimmick that slows things down - drasticaly). Using this rom i'm able to uninstall touchflo and free up significant memory. This suits me down to the ground but not those who want to use touchflo!
Take a look at the wiki (mostly) and the Rom development sub-section of this Diamond section of the forums. As long as you follow the Wiki instructions on HardSPL and then use a rom specifically for a touch diamond, you should be fine.
Be very carefull though and DOUBLE check everything, one wrong flash program and you can destroy your phone.
Have fun!
p.s. Many people think that the factory 1.37.xx roms are the most stable, even more than the later versions. I'm running a TLR based 1.37something and I am very happy with it and never have to reboot my phone.
Got it....Its all here
Hi Lats... I've tried a variety of roms on my Compact IV and I have to say, me and my colleagues at work find that Swiftblades roms are pretty much as good as they come. He's now released version 5.0 and if you're still on the original T-mobile rom, then you'll notice one hell of a difference and improvement in speed and usability.
Go for it and don't worry if your concerned about warranty, there is a stock T-mobile rom floating around on the forum and instructions on how to return your Compact IV back to it's original state.
If you find the whole rom thing confusing, then take a look at this site:- www.modmydiamond.info It'll pretty much tell you everything.
Basically though, you'll find there are 3 phases to upgrading
1) HardSPL - In laymans terms, this pretty much opens the phone up for flashing roms. Most people seem to go for and recommend using Hard-SPL 1.40 Olinex Developers Edition-Unsigned. There are consequences to using an unsigned version, it means you could in theory download and install a dodgy untested Rom, but it's up to you to go for roms on the thread from reputable guys where you can see lots of other people have installed their tried and tested roms.
Once you've done this, you'll not need to do this again.
2) The Radio - This deals with the comms side of the phone, ie phone signal strength etc etc. It's pretty much been agreed by most people that v1.00.25.05 appears to be the best of the bunch.
3) Lastly choose a rom, there are half a dozen really good roms out there and many of them are down to personal choice. Many of them are customised too much for my liking. I chose Swifts as he pretty much keeps his clean and looking like a stock rom.
You'll only have to do the Hard-SPL once and probably the radio once, unless a better radio arrives. So once you've done all this, you can keep trying different roms without the need to do the Hard-SPL and radio all over again.
Hope this clarifies things a bit for you.
Good luck and have fun!
Thanks ever so much guys. I already feel alot more confident about this. Just one question... guide suggests the following:-
Manually enter the Bootloader by pressing the Power button, Camera button and performing a soft reset at the same time
Where is the camera button and it sounds as I need 3 hands to do this!
They're refering to the main round button below your screen in the middle of the 4 buttons, and yes you need 3 hands, but you can just about do it with 2
Let us know which ROM you upgrade to - I'm on the same ROM and radio as you are. Bit nervous about flashing the rom as my last phone (Vario II/Hermes) had to go back a month after I had it due to the screen alignment issues. After the warranty expired, I was flashing daily (lol) and yes, they do make a big difference.
I've got a copy of the UK Tmobile rom from this site, but cant remember the page now or what i typed in to get it... will try again later. It's called "RUU_Victor_TMO_UK_1.37.110.3_Radio_Signed_Diamond_52.26a.25.09_1.00.25.03_Ship"

Ensure you are connnected via activesync when doing any flashing, remembering to hard reset again after every flash,
Yeah, most definetly I will let you know but I think it will be over the weekend now. I had a quick attempt to get bootloader going, but it don't look easy. Phone just resets everytime and just reboots back to normal.
If anyone has any tips on which buttons I need to press first or if there is any easier way of doing this, I'm listening.

If you want to flash any ROM - you dont need to manually enter boot loader to do so...
As I mentioned before.
just make sure you have active-sync running and working and the battery id over %50 charged.
I'll be doing this tonight

Best rom?

Im a noob when it comes to the rhodium. I havent even received mine yet. Should come in tuesday or wednesday. Anyway i was hoping if i could get some opinions on some of the customs roms offered. I have been using energyrom on my Fuze for some time now and I love it but I am interested in shadowline's roms. Could I get some input?
Better start searching, because this will be deleted/closed in 24hr.
like what Taninpv said you need to search and it this thread will be closed. find the one that suits you.
The Answer is D. All of the above.
There is no such "better ROM"
What is good to me could not be to you...
The best way is to test severals till you get "your best ROM"
The one on my sig is "my best ROM"
you have to try.
Best thing you can do is see what you like in a ROM.
What kind of Manilla do you like, do you want lots of programs installed or as little as posssible?
Do you perhaps want just the CHome of windows 6.5 and no anilla at all?
all these kind of answers will help you to choose the best ROM for you.
I've seen many people raving about the NRG Rom's, but I don't like Manilla and I want as little programs installed as possible.
So I won't flash these ROMS.
My point is, just flash, it's nothing more then data that's being rewritten.
If you don't like the ROM you flashed, download another and flash again.
Usualy it takes me aproximatly 30 minutes to install my phone with all the software, but the flashing itself won't take more then 10 minutes.
Happy flashing
Don't listen to this "u gotta find the one that's best for u" bull****. If ur quite new to flashing and quite new to TP2 it's gonna take weeks if not months. It's hard to find the one that actually WORKS for longer than couple of days. All of ROMS I had in my phone started to be laggy or/and buggy after some tweaks and installing several apps. I was able to run my phone for longer than a week only with A.Z.T.O.R. and now Shadowline. Now kill me everybody.
I often find myself sticking with a ROM for a while and when the time come's to change, I have to look at what's new again, normally, I just look at the pictures and what's included, if it's to my liking, I flash it. If I don't like it after flashing I try another.
I always keep teh AZTOR rom on my SD card in case all goes wrong and I need a working ROM in a hurry .
Dave

So I found my Rom...Have you?

Just to inform you guys if there are people out there like me...
I have reverted back to the Standard WM6.0 HK WWE Rom, as I have tried every single ROM availble on this forums, but nothing seemed to work 100% for me, there was always a draw back in every single ROM I have tried, except this one that I been running for the last month.
Yes it is old and outdated, but surprizingly, everything works 100%, no problems, no lock ups, no keyboard lags, battery is lasting longer etc.
So it looks a bit dull and boring, but maybe the more stuff added to the roms the more things can go wrong.
I'll be honest I appreciated everyone's efforts in creating the best ROMS available on this forum, but like I said no rom was working 100% for ME, so I'm not ungreatfull
Hopefully the ROMS made on this forums works 100% for you guys, but just thought I'd share this for the people like me. So dont flame me please
This is my little 2c contribution to the forums.
I have found mine as well: a standard WM6.1 WWE from HTC (the latest shipped rom). And as an addition: Eclair v2.0.1 . These both do almost everything I want them to .
However, I have been swithching a lot to JJblasters work as well: that works beautifull .

and which rom is that cos i wanna try it too....
Never
I liked Josh's Kaiser Rom "21929 Hybrid" I was using it since it was released with NO problems. Wonderfully stable Rom, which is the only reason I waited so long to jump on the 6.5 bandwagon (as of yesterday). Glad you found something you are satisfied with, but I doubt I will ever settle for any one rom permanently.
Going back to 6.0 is not " finding your rom ". it is going back to your old Volkswagen because the new Ferrarris and Lamborghinis are too complicated and hard to drive.
The Rom I have is here : http://www.asia.htc.com/download/RU..._radio_sign_22.51.88.13_1.27.15.32R2_Ship.exe
If everyone is interested, give it a shot
And by the way Denco, I'm hectically in IT, I just need something that works 100% and 100% all the time
Not in the mood to battle with problematic roms.

I totally agree with this, as soon as a new build hits I flash.
Some ROMS may be buggy, which is why you inform the chefs who in turn do their best to correct the bug.

If you need something that works 100% & 100% of the time, why even bother with flashing non-stock ROMs? I'm in IT as well, and I'm running Eclair 2.01 on top of jjblasters 28014. The issues that crop up don't prevent me from doing my job, and help me be better educated as to what's coming down the road.
Either way, to each their own. Enjoy your boring, bland, feature-less stock ROM and I'll enjoy the cutting edge.
My fav rom running over 1 year, Never need to reboot except if I remove battery or install new cabs.

I've been running stock ROMs forever, or at least since AT&T US released the Tilt 6.1 updates. Work fairly well.
The Android builds work anywhere from not at all to very well. I'm working on Eclair now. Seems very stable. Someone is working on battery life now, seems to be less than 8 hours now, so that might be a problem. Several things don't work, but nothing I can't live without.
If you are starting from the beginning, I suggest getting a couple of Class 6 MicroSD 4GB cards, heading to http://www.androidonhtc.com/kaiser/install, installing 1.5 or 1.6 on the card, and playing with it for awhile. See if you like it. There are ZIP files to download that you unzip and copy to the SD card.
You boot your normal ROM, get to WinMobile, then start up Android from the SD. So it doesn't do anything to your standard phone. It just all of a sudden is running only Android. If you want WinMobile, you just shutdown, and restart to WinMobile. No pain.
After that, you start replacing various files to get to the version of Android that you want. As I said, sometimes you get very unstable, but when that happens, just return to the previous stable version.
It's like getting a free new phone! Or at least one for the prices of some SD cards.

damn 4gb?! i have a 2gb..lol aha. i'm still running abbots v11, do you know what might be more stable with it? any suggestions? how long did the install take? i was looking on the eclair 2.0.1 thread, and i think theres a bootloader for it now?
which ROM
well.. I ve tried many ROMS.. but frankly felt shifu's version 4 was good. I dint face any problems with that ROM.
all other were buggy I agree.. and the original shipped ROM has to be good.
Ha, I have the same thoughts. I`ve tried a lot of roms, some of them was quite good but not in 100%. That was boring and if You use seriously your phone with a lot of important files, contacts, calendar appointmets it is hard to keep averything right when changing frequently roms. this is quite nice feature to change os to something You like, but not for serius usage. Somebody compare standard rom to Volkswagen, rebuidled to ferrari. So what that You have ferrari if itis not capable to run ?
pawelpaciorek : That is exactly what I'm talking about, I have tried most 6.5 roms on this forum and to keep on changing my roms and back up my contacts, reinstalling every single app (skype, gps, garmin etc etc etc) was just irretating me coz the ROM wasnt functioning propperly.
Luckily for now I set my phone up on our work's MS exchange server, so restoring contacts etc has become a bit easier.
Coz i once tried like 5 ROMS a day, and just got too irretated, to do all the above.
I believe its because the 6.5 roms are still in Beta, and no matter what, the Chefs cant really turn a Beta product into a full working one.
So its not the Chefs fault, its the fact that the Base of the 6.5 roms aren't completed.
I'm actually looking forward in changing my rom to Android as soon as it becomes available as a stand alone OS (somehow I doubt this will happen for Kaiser) but yeah
I have found my ROM as well.
It's not stock, it's not 6.5. In fact, I hate 6.5 ROMs running on Kaiser.
Everytime I flash a different ROM I go back to my safe ROM in a matter of days. Even recent ROMs made by the same chef are not as fast and stable.
I've a got a 6.1 ROM, memory hacked, fast, and stable.
I'm not telling what ROM it is in this topic though.
I have hated the 6.5.x roms for Kaiser because they have all been buggy, slow, or some cross of the two. But I will say this:
TPC "Stock Like" 23071 is FASTER than the GENUINE At&t 6.1 ROM!!!! And stability is almost flawless... no crashes of any kind.
Only problem I have with stock roms, which is what causes me the headache of flashing to try new roms is the feature set AT&T uses SUCKS and the OS tends to be bogged down with bloatware EVEN when soft resetting just before the customization screen.
The HTC home plugin is ugly, and makes landscape practically unviewable. The settings are horrible in 6.1, and the functionality is mutilated. 6.5 has fantastic functionality at the price of very few stable or even speedy builds.
As I stated, the one I am using is TPC Stock Like 23071 (NOT 28002 which has the sleep death that is to date not curable in the 28002 builds).

BTW, the newer radio (1.71 eMonster) is definitely a necessity!

What country are you in? I tried that one and found the GPS fix was nowhere near as fast here in the UK. Maybe it's quick in the countries it's intended for though.... I never tried running my (older) favourite 1.27.12.32 Radio on it and that may have made a difference (if it was fully compatible). I don't rember, does it have a network connection wizard including countries such as the UK because one of the WWE WM 6.0 ROMs I tried only had S.E.A. countries listed and that posed a problem with getting it to work here (it couldn't get all the required settings automatically once I started the phone with its O2 sim). Yes I guess I could have manually installed a cab version of a full wizard but who wants to do that after any hard reset (and I still do those every few months when things start to slow down).

Been there done that (was a computer technician) and I know what you mean. The GUI may be a bit more sluggish and boot times longer but at least you get what you want - in my case the most important thing being brilliant GPS performance.

Random Fresh/root questions

Have a few questions about Fresh, rooting, and Hero stuff in general, wasn't sure where to post. Wish there was a informal chat section.. lol
1. I've been running Fresh 1.5 with Gumbo Kernel and Fresh's android peep lock screen for about 5 months or so. Loved it. Decided to get with the times and try new roms, problem is most of them would boot loop my phone. After flashing all sorts, from what i can figure out, my phone won't take an overclocked ROM. Why might that be?
2. I Really wanted to run FreshToast, but it would either boot loop, or be so unstable it would reboot itself all day. So i settled on Fresh 2.1.2. Good so far (on day 2, fully configured), Almost seems like there isn't that much difference in performance from 1.5, but it's stable (which is one of the biggest things for me). I tried flashing Darchstar's Overclocked Kernel v4 for Fresh 2.1.2, but found that even an overclocked kernel boot loops. Is there any improved, non-overclocked kernel, like Gumbo, for 2.1.2?
3. Previously to running 2.1.2 i hated Launcher. I'm a senseUI guy. However it's not terrible i must admit. Been trying to get used to it just to try it out, however whenever i press the home button it takes me to sense home, then i have to press my shortcut back to Launcher. Is there a way to switch the default to Launcher, then later back to sense if i want? Some where there was an option for what the home button does, the way i read it was it would take to you Launcher home, guess not..
Last...
4. If i'm understanding it right, 2.1.2 is "Stock Clocked" to ~700MHz, so if you run OCwidget (or setCPU) that you are actually underclocking (which has it's uses i guess). So my question here is, Using OCwidget, does it Never hit ~700MHz?
So i lied..
5. I didn't realize there was Fresh 2.3.3 when i flashed 2.1.2. Is it worth the effort to reflash to 2.3.3? I don't see how some of you guys can swap back and forth between ROMs all the time. It takes me two solid days of going through all the settings to get everything back to preference, drive me nuts!
Sorry for the long post. Any input on any of these is greatly appreciated. I have done a lot of research, so i know most the lingo. I'm still a noob, but don't pamper me, let me know what's up.
....
6. How can i get a different lock screen on 2.1.2? I tried flashing the 'peep' one i had, but it didn't take. I've never had Fresh's Kitchen work for me, tried that too. I Hate the Vanilla lockscreen, mainly i just wanted something transparent, like the peep one.
I was hoping that day two and a full battery drain would fix this- pulled the phone off the charger for 5min to answer a phone call, batt dropped to 85%..

Official AOSP 2.2 OTA rom acting...odd...

I've been running Lazslo's Froyo rom for awhile, but saw this one in Development, and thought I'd give it a whirl.
At first, was fast, good memory management, and a pretty fine rom.
However, after about a week, it started lagging badly. At first, a power-off reboot seemed to fix it. But then (after 1-2 days of trying this), it wouldn't power off. It would "reboot", skipping the "G1" splash screen, and then go into a 3-4 auto reboot cycle.
I finally gave up on it, and went back to FBL, which never exhibited this behavior, nor has it since I reflashed to it (over a week). But I'm still intrigued by the MT3G Froyo rom.
Maybe someone has an idea why it was acting like that?
What SPL/Radio do you use? Maybe reflashing it will solve it. Like any ROM, you have to reflash the ROM after a few days to make it work properly.

Excuse me, but that's totally nonsense ... and repeating it again and again doesn't make it more correct.
Used whatever radio/spl it said.
As far as "reflashing", that is just plain SILLY.
I flash FBL, and don't reflash. Same as all other roms. No reflashing needed.
Either it works, or it doesn't, and the "odd" behavior my phone had with the Froyo AOSP was just in that rom, no others ever.
So, as I said, I went back to FBL. Nice, fast, small, good memory
Reflashed to AOSP 2.2 OTA. I downloaded a "fresh" copy, just in case.
I like the memory management, and the easy to flash themes, etc.
The "black text on white background" for SMS not being changeable is about the only irritating part of the ROM
I'll wait and see if the "odd" behavior emerges again.
So far, so good. (12 hours)
I'll post back later, and let everyone know
I mean, to do that after your rom does some weird things. It works with me, so it's not silly, just my opinion. AND DON'T HATE FOR A MISTAKE!
Actually, I've switched to a newer rom now,
CronMod-Dream, a 2.3.7 Gingerbread rom that, to me, combines the speed and stability of FBL with the usability features of 2.2 OTA.
Actually, the new rom has FBL and 2.2 OTA beat in speed and stability (at least, for me it does. Your mileage may vary)
