Random Fresh/root questions - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have a few questions about Fresh, rooting, and Hero stuff in general, wasn't sure where to post. Wish there was a informal chat section.. lol
1. I've been running Fresh 1.5 with Gumbo Kernel and Fresh's android peep lock screen for about 5 months or so. Loved it. Decided to get with the times and try new roms, problem is most of them would boot loop my phone. After flashing all sorts, from what i can figure out, my phone won't take an overclocked ROM. Why might that be?
2. I Really wanted to run FreshToast, but it would either boot loop, or be so unstable it would reboot itself all day. So i settled on Fresh 2.1.2. Good so far (on day 2, fully configured), Almost seems like there isn't that much difference in performance from 1.5, but it's stable (which is one of the biggest things for me). I tried flashing Darchstar's Overclocked Kernel v4 for Fresh 2.1.2, but found that even an overclocked kernel boot loops. Is there any improved, non-overclocked kernel, like Gumbo, for 2.1.2?
3. Previously to running 2.1.2 i hated Launcher. I'm a senseUI guy. However it's not terrible i must admit. Been trying to get used to it just to try it out, however whenever i press the home button it takes me to sense home, then i have to press my shortcut back to Launcher. Is there a way to switch the default to Launcher, then later back to sense if i want? Some where there was an option for what the home button does, the way i read it was it would take to you Launcher home, guess not..
Last...
4. If i'm understanding it right, 2.1.2 is "Stock Clocked" to ~700MHz, so if you run OCwidget (or setCPU) that you are actually underclocking (which has it's uses i guess). So my question here is, Using OCwidget, does it Never hit ~700MHz?
So i lied..
5. I didn't realize there was Fresh 2.3.3 when i flashed 2.1.2. Is it worth the effort to reflash to 2.3.3? I don't see how some of you guys can swap back and forth between ROMs all the time. It takes me two solid days of going through all the settings to get everything back to preference, drive me nuts!
Sorry for the long post. Any input on any of these is greatly appreciated. I have done a lot of research, so i know most the lingo. I'm still a noob, but don't pamper me, let me know what's up.
....
6. How can i get a different lock screen on 2.1.2? I tried flashing the 'peep' one i had, but it didn't take. I've never had Fresh's Kitchen work for me, tried that too. I Hate the Vanilla lockscreen, mainly i just wanted something transparent, like the peep one.

I was hoping that day two and a full battery drain would fix this- pulled the phone off the charger for 5min to answer a phone call, batt dropped to 85%..

battery life. new rom?

so my rom is stock; infact, i just got the phone. maybe three cabs. advanced config, mobile matt's theme.. .net 3.5? battery life seems like it's going to be a problem. i haven't even gotten it to say it was fully charged.. always still charging.
is it worth going to the "test" rom that we recently received? will that even improve batter life? i had a wizard for years before, and i must have flipped roms over 40 times.. and it just.. it never quite worked right the same after i started dicking with it. and i'm reading in the thread on that rom that some are going back over service issues.
opnions? any general battery life conservation methods?

Have you left the Fuze to charge for 5+ hours yet? If so and you can't get it to say it's fully charged, you might want to investigate it further before you start flashing, to save yourself the trouble of flashing back the stock SPL and ROM in case you want to send it back for an exchange.
You're right, the battery life sucks. In Advanced Config, under "Power Management," I have all that stuff enabled and it helps a little. I also set my screen brightness down to the lowest I can tolerate instead of using the sensor.
The radio that's in the test ROM is incredible! I first flashed that with the stock ROM and it did wonders for my battery life. As I'm sure you've read by now, GPS sucks too on stock. The radio also helps a lot with GPS, I noticed a huge difference after flashing. I highly recommend NATF's ROMs, his version 4.5 is based off the test ROM and it is incredibly fast and stable. GPS works even better when the radio is coupled with the test ROM, or any ROM based on it. Battery life is so much better now.
Links to the radio thread and NATF's ROMs are in my sig.
hey
thanks so much for your rapid response. you can say i load that radio with my stock rom? i might be interested in doing that, however; my GPS seems to work fine. no difficulties like other people say. i hate to switch to another radio and screw that up.. but you claims wonders about battery life.
i have been closely eyeing a NATF rom. i've been watchin him since he "proudly got a branded fuze" even tho i didn't have this phone till last week.
i did charge it over night last night, and it did go to 100%.. and within two hours, about 8 text messages and changing my text message sound, i'm down to 86% so anything's worth a try.
i'm just so reluctant to flash to a new rom.. i hate all the bloatware, and the different things.. but it seems once you go down that road, it's soft resets every time something goes wrong, at least once a day. and emails tryin to figure out why my MMS only works when the moon is aligned.. i'm doing this same reflash work to a 2005 mustang GT brain and same kinda things.. now the idle isn't stable, if you drive the car, cut it off, then fire it back up it's touchy to drive.. seems like every time i **** with someone, yeah it flies on that one aspect, but it ends up being like a baby, always wiping the ass.
bottom line: what do i need to only flash that radio? Hard spl?

No prob man. First thing is we gotta make sure you have a GSM phone, so hopefully you're with AT&T and have a Fuze. If you're with verison or sprint, flashing is a no go. I really don't know anything about the CDMA versions of the Raph, but the forum for those are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=465
So if you do have a GSM, awesome. If you're worried about bloat, you don't have to anymore with NATF's ROMs. His standard ROM is loaded with great utilities and tools, no bloat and has about 320MB free "Storage Space" in memory. That's huge leaps over the stock with the bloat, and stock without the bloat it still beats it by 100MB! NATF's ROMs are definitely faster than the stock and are very stable. But if you're still reluctant to flash, I don't blame you, I barely got rid of my stock ROM a month ago; I've had the Fuze since it's launch date in Nov.
Yep, HardSPL is the first step. mskip has a great guide with all the required links to get you going, follow steps 1, 2, & 5 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448008
Lemme know how it works out for you.
New radio rom helps, as does switching to a ROM that doesn't load as much junk in the background. Also, do a soft reset after you run activesync on the phone - there's a lot of stuff that loads during synching that doesn't properly unload afterwards, meaning increased cpu and memory usage and thus battery.
In my opinion, i think you should get Da_G's 6.5 roms. Yes, they're beta but they run amazingly smooth, with very few glitches. and my battery life is AMAZING with them. I can go a whole day and half with a full charge as opposed to less than a day with all the other roms. and that's with constant texting and phone calls and data connection. not to mention his rom is really fast!
natf 4.5 att
i've decided around midnight i shall attempt not to brick my phone whilst flashin the natf rom. is there a link anyone could give me to a description of the rom?

Can't go wrong with his thread, it's in my sig.
Some things to keep in mind:
Don't forget to back up your PIM, I use PPCPimBackup, you can find it at d0ugie's site: http://blownfuze.org/ If you do not have threaded SMS, change that in Advanced Config after you flash, then restore your PIM. Your contacts and calendar should come back right away after the restore, but the messages take a while to rebuild, so don't touch it for at least 15 mins after the reboot.
Sprite Backup from the stock rom isn't included in NATF's, you can find it here at Da_G's rom thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446652&highlight=sprite+backup

Fixing random shut down

My wifes captivate has the random shut down issue. Already got replacement phone and it started back up after a few weeks. If I use Odin one click to restore ucjf6 (or upgrade her phone to froyo) will this end my shutdown woes? I have been under the impression that the shutdown issue was a software problem.
I can't say I've ever heard of that happening to a stock rom (I'm guessing you never flashed any custom ROMs on to it)...
At this stage, I think it'll be better off if you take it back to AT&T as you've not really done anything to it (modding/romming wise).
Its out of warranty.she has been dealing with it by using an app from the market. I was hoping that upgrade to froyo would over write the defective software. Then I got to thinking that maybe odin would do the same thing.
The app from the market works perfectly, but it kills her battery life(it's called Captivate Keep Alive from Blue Steel).
Hmm, then yeah I suggest for you to flash her phone... Possibly to a custom ROM at this stage. Stock ROMs usually have way too much bloatware.
Also, if you can please check what version of Captivate she has... It'll be underneath where her battery is.
Usually a four digit code (1006,1007,1008,etc).
Hers is 1008.
Yeap, you should be fine to use any of these ODIN files.
2.1 - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SBSMALFJ
2.2 - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QL6NX702
If you need instructions, just yell again
I would probably recommend the 2.2 one (if you're not going to flash any custom ROMs).
If you are thinking of custom ROMs, then I recommend going to 2.1.
Thanks for the help. I, and my wifes battery, appreciate it.
My cappy also just randomly shuts off, but i know it isn't the battery because I've switched batteries from another cappy. I also heard there were re-calls on some cappy's as well. can it also be a hardware problem?
I have installed Firefly 3.0 on my captivate every now and then when the battery gets low to like 30% it turns off and then i gotta pop the battery out and pop it back in because it randomly shuts down. It has happened in games, phone calls from friends that are in iraq, and various other things. I just reloaded fire fly onto my phone but I am not sure whats going on with it.
After trying about everything to kill this gremlin, deleting widgets, CKA, Load Monitor, etc., I went back to JF6, charged the phone fully and let it run. The problem is still here. On the very next battrery cycle after reverting to JF6, the random shutdown occurred again while running off battery with a bone stock set-up. The battery was at about 70% when the failure occurred. (It is a new battery too.)
I bot my fone last Sept, just shy of one year ago. So today I called ATT and after a short discussion with the rep, a replacement is on the way. I described the problem and advised that one by one I had un-installed all the widgets and apps that I thought might be causing problems, then mentioned resorting to the factory reset.
A few questions followed. Then I was on hold awhile. I'm really glad I reverted to JF6 and ran the stock set-up to the fail condition. It allowed me to speak to the rep with confidence, and high hopes that they would get me an exchange. When it came time to answer questions about the Settings About details, it was all right as rain.
Now the question is will the new device have the power-off Gremlin? We shall see!
Guess I'll have some fun flashing different set-ups for these next few days 'til the replacement arrives.
Then one last flash to JF6 and back this first cappy goes...
If you are experiencing this shutdown issue, get back to stock and see if it stays. If you have had your phone less than one year, and it's dying on you, you should be able to get a refurb.

[Q/Problem] Seems to happen with Every Rom.

I would like to keep this short and sweet so...
Basically heres the low down: I got a G1 almost a year ago, got into Rooting/flashing 7 months ago. I noticed in the beginning almost every rom was giving me a problem, Freezing up, hanging for long periods of time, etc. I eventually found a very nice, stable rom thats been lasting me for about 6 months but as of late was being horrible. Force Closing everytime I got a text message, REALLY Hanging for long periods of time, freezing up. Etc.
So I finally got FED UP, and decide it was time for a change, so I grabbed MLIGN 3.3v having seen so many good reviews and what not, thinking it would be the remedy to my poison. I cried. So in short, here is whats going on:
1. It seems to only wanna cooperate when Plugged into the USB, which, isn't too practical.
2. When not plugged in, it is NOT sluggish, but when loading into apps I've noticed it will hang for quiet awhile or completely lock up to the point only popping out the battery will work.
3. I haven't noticed it yet, but on the old ROM it would randomly shut off during phone calls; which leads me too....
4. When ever I shut the screen off (by pushing endcall) it seems to freeze and lock up and eventually either SHUTOFF or REBOOT into a SHUTOFF of the phone and refuse to turn back on until it has been plugged into the USB, or enough time has passed for it to 'forgive me' and by that, I mean randomly work again.
5: Various other things I cant think of right now.
So, basically thats almost everything. Whenever its plugged into USB though, it works like a charm (for the most part).
Would a problem with my Battery be the case? Which, would be awkward but a possibility.
Or did I just do something wrong?
I made sure to factory wipe the phone twice, even 3 times on the last go, I updated the ENG.SPL and Radio every time I tried to reflash just to make sure.
I partitioned my SD Card for 32MB Swap; 512EXT2 (and 7xxEXT2 I forget what it was) and I also upgraded it to EXT3, which showed some improvement... I believe.
So, I just would like to have my phone working, in a peaceful, obedient manner xD.
Forgive me for the block of text, and all help will be appreciated. Thank you guys... I await sound advice
Try different ROM? See which one works best.
Like me, I found that SuperAosp is best suit for me (see my sig for DEV Site and Download, if you want to try it). It had been running fast and I had no issue, what so ever. Occasionally when I loaded apps that hogged the power usage it gets lags, but still good. FCs are at minimal to none (that's just because of the way I handle the apps). Once in a while I noticed that it reboot, when I tried to use the apps that hogged the memory (maybe that was the apps issue).
Only other thing I recommed is to download a different launcher, because the build-in ADW Launcher does not work too well in my opinion.
Another thing, if you wish to keep the ROM you had. I would suggest to change the partition size. (IE: Catch [128MB]/Ext 2 or EXT 3 [1024MB]/ FAT32[the rest]) Now I know other people might say that it's overkill, but to me my G1 performance it great.
I've tried multiple roms as of late, and the one I like the most does happen to be MLIGNs... everything seems to be working correctly for the most part with the exception of what I listed above... Now on the like, 23rd reboot most of the sluggishness that was there before is gone, and everything is pretty much being cooperative, with the exception of like the weather, which isn't updating properly but I can live with that. What I cant live with is the fact that this ROM when not plugged in, will freeze up when in the lock screen, a few minutes after it has darkened and gone black and wont respond at all. Or I'll unplug it and just do a test, swipe left, right for a good minute or two, go into apps and It'll just SHUT OFF. Maybe it really is the battery? I'm unsure. When I look at the battery it does look quiet bloated... I am unsure...
I'm gonna try to set it to what you recommended, and see if that works...
I don't think it's the battery.
Have you tried reformat/partion your SD card (be sure to backup your data first). See my last comment on sizes recommendation for each partition.
Also check on the swappiness setting.
Mhm... so I went back and followed everything you told me to do, including repartitioning to the exact file sizes you told me. (Also I'm guessing Cache meant Swap) So I set everything up and its really blazing fast and stable.... until I remove the USB cord. Then it shuts off, freezes at lock screen when the screen is dimmed to black, and will just randomly shut off while doing things (especially when trying to get into messages)
Also if it helps, I have a Class 2 8Gig SD card, and my Recovery is Ra 1.5.x(I forget.) I'm completely confused... I dunno what to do... I would really like this to just work and stop being a hassle D:
Hmmm, Try reading this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010932
See if it helps.
Nothing :/ Its okay... I'm gonna go play around with other roms, completely re do my phone, make sure everything is updated etc. Then go from there.
Thank you anyways, you were a big help, reguardless of my phones triumphing retardism

[Q] Installing ROMs. What Precautions to take?

I used to be a Droid 1 user and I played with a lot of custom ROMs. Got the Droid 4 on release day and I'm thinking of playing around with custom ROMs.
If I install the recovery and a custom ROM, isn't the factory restore option always on the phone so anytime I want, I can restore the phone to the day I got it?
Are there any downsides to installing custom ROMs as of now (such as battery, glitches, etc)
I rooted my phone and I've seen a decline in battery life. There is another thread about it but I wanted to ask here, anybody else have this issue?
Lastly, is it worth installing custom ROMs now or just waiting for the official ICS update? I basically just want a working phone with the best battery possible. The only reason I rooted was to uninstall the bloatware on the phone however wifi tether and screenshot are nice to have.
Thanks!
Installing any custom ROM right now is going to be a little risky simply because there are no fastboot files to restore your phone with. Now, SafeStrap does a pretty good job of minimizing that risk by creating what is essentially a dualboot environment allowing you to run a secondary ROM on your phone while leaving the stock ROM intact.
I am running the ICS Beta ROM by Hashcode and it is running really well for me. Battery life has been fine, pretty much on par with stock. Being a beta there are things that are not perfect but I am using it as a daily driver with no issues. You can find a list of known bugs in the ROM OP. Although it seems to be hit a miss with some of them. I have had no issues with wifi or mobile data connections at all.
I ran stock rooted for about 1 1/2 weeks and didn't notice any decline in battery life personally. Not I froze apps rather than uninstalling anything so I could get them back if I needed to. And I really didn't freeze much unless it was something I saw running in the background that I knew I wouldn't need/use.
Really, if you are just looking for a phone that works with the best battery life, you are probably better off staying with stock. In my experience with the Droid 2, no ROM I ran could touch stock for battery life. And really, I think the stock experience on the D4 is fine. The bloatware wasn't overly bad IMO, smart actions is pretty neat, and the UI was plenty snappy. I'm just a flashaholic.
I am quite happy with stock after debloating it.
Sent from my DROID4 using XDA
Thanks for explaining safestrap. Does it actually set up a dual-boot environment, or does it swap out /system, /data, etc. I've tried reading hashcode's blog, but the instructions are a little fuzzy on what exactly is going on. I don't have my D4 yet, and I'd like to get a handle on what exactly safestrap is doing before I take the plunge.
Currently I have a D1 and I'll fully admit I'm spoiled that it is essentially unbrickable. Once, I screwed it up so bad that it wouldn't even boot up into recovery. I have no idea how I managed that, but a quick session with RSDlite fixed everything...
Of course, I know a lot more now than I did back then, but here is hoping we get hold of some fastboot images for the D4 soon...
I finally took the plunge and installed Safestrap. Once your phone is rooted, you just run an APK installed on your phone. The process feels incredibly clean, and I was completely comfortable that as long as I was careful, nothing bad would happen. This proved to be true.
It really does set up a dual-boot. I spent several hours today playing with CM9, and when I was done, I simply disabled the safe system, and the phone booted right back up into my rooted and debloated stock. The most dangerous part is making sure that you do NOT try to flash over the non-safe system, and, in fact, Safestrap generally won't even let you do that.
Not only did I find that Safestrap worked great, but CM9 works better on the Droid 4 than almost any other device I have played with it on. If they can make sure that the data connection is reliable and get the font camera working, it is practically ready for prime time. Everything else works great. I am now confident that we will see CM9 for the Droid 4 as soon as CM itself is complete and stable, since drivers do not seem to be a problem on this phone. I also suspect we will see some CM7-based roms quite quickly as well.
I am also very glad of the option to always easily revert back to the stock system without losing anything, it will make going to the Verizon store very easy if I ever need to.
I also came from a D1, installing ROMs was so easy, I'm a little hesitant on this one especially since a genuine ICS update is on the way. I might wait for that before I try custom ROMs. I use a front camera a lot so CM9 is unfortunately out of question. My battery issue was solved with a calibrate (deleting batterystats) even though it's not supposed to work, I can confirm that it definitely worked for me.
Once you toggle on the safe system, installing ROMS is just as easy as it was on the D1. What is nice, though, is you can keep your stock system fully in tact. I actually keep my phone on a simple rooted stock, but when a friend asks about Android ICS, I just toggle on the safe system, and boot it up. When I'm done, I toggle off the safe system, and back to stock. Safestrap is awesome.
core2kid... this is moto, the official update is gonna take 3-6 months so i would not suggest waiting it out.
i came from a D1 as well and safestrap bugged me out for a while... but once i installed and started using it i really like it. think of it as a dual-boot.
1 is your stock system that you do not f** with... you just leave it so that you have a backup should you f** up your...
2nd system is the one you flash all your ROMs on... no matter what you do to it, the first system is not touched, so you have to try REALLY hard to brick it.
Thanks. I'll give it a go. Last question, if I have hardware issues with the phone, is there a way to restore it to factory so I can warranty it? My main concern is my battery dying. I don't want to be stuck with a useless phone because the battery is in built.
i cant say with 100% certainty, but theres got to be a way.
as for the battery... it will probably die the day after your warranty is up, and by then there will be DIY replacement kits.

Official AOSP 2.2 OTA rom acting...odd...

I've been running Lazslo's Froyo rom for awhile, but saw this one in Development, and thought I'd give it a whirl.
At first, was fast, good memory management, and a pretty fine rom.
However, after about a week, it started lagging badly. At first, a power-off reboot seemed to fix it. But then (after 1-2 days of trying this), it wouldn't power off. It would "reboot", skipping the "G1" splash screen, and then go into a 3-4 auto reboot cycle.
I finally gave up on it, and went back to FBL, which never exhibited this behavior, nor has it since I reflashed to it (over a week). But I'm still intrigued by the MT3G Froyo rom.
Maybe someone has an idea why it was acting like that?
What SPL/Radio do you use? Maybe reflashing it will solve it. Like any ROM, you have to reflash the ROM after a few days to make it work properly.

Excuse me, but that's totally nonsense ... and repeating it again and again doesn't make it more correct.
Used whatever radio/spl it said.
As far as "reflashing", that is just plain SILLY.
I flash FBL, and don't reflash. Same as all other roms. No reflashing needed.
Either it works, or it doesn't, and the "odd" behavior my phone had with the Froyo AOSP was just in that rom, no others ever.
So, as I said, I went back to FBL. Nice, fast, small, good memory
Reflashed to AOSP 2.2 OTA. I downloaded a "fresh" copy, just in case.
I like the memory management, and the easy to flash themes, etc.
The "black text on white background" for SMS not being changeable is about the only irritating part of the ROM
I'll wait and see if the "odd" behavior emerges again.
So far, so good. (12 hours)
I'll post back later, and let everyone know
I mean, to do that after your rom does some weird things. It works with me, so it's not silly, just my opinion. AND DON'T HATE FOR A MISTAKE!
Actually, I've switched to a newer rom now,
CronMod-Dream, a 2.3.7 Gingerbread rom that, to me, combines the speed and stability of FBL with the usability features of 2.2 OTA.
Actually, the new rom has FBL and 2.2 OTA beat in speed and stability (at least, for me it does. Your mileage may vary)
