I'm new to android, not to tech stuff.
Okay here's the situation.
Yesterday i bought a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant i9000M on Bell in Canada.
It came with Froyo 2.2 on it, i wanted Darkys_v9.5_Extreme_Edition.zip so i grabbed the official version.
I used Super One Click Root to Root the phone, worked flawlessly. I then installed Rom Manager from Market. I put the Darkys_v9.5_Extreme_Edition.zip file in the Root of the internal SD card. i pressed that top option in Rom Manager (i forget the button) it did its thing, everything was looking good. then i rebooted into recovery mode and there was no Darkys_v9.5_Extreme_Edition.zip to be found. No problem, my friend convinced me it would be easier to install Darkys_v9.2_Resurrection_Edition and then using the kernel installed with that, i could then use the intended method to install Darkys_v9.5_Extreme_Edition.zip
So i used Odin 1.3 to install Darkys_v9.2_Resurrection_Edition so for the Pit file i used s1_odin_20100512.pit and for the PDA i chose darky_odin.tar.md5
i had
Code:
Repartition, Auto Reboot, F. Reset Time
all checked. I clicked start, Odin did its thing.
When the phone came back on i got the Galaxy S splash screen and it was flashing. I tried installing numerous other ROMs on the phone and i would get as far as the animation after the Galaxy S splash screen.
I thought

The infamous Phone+!+Computer.
Well this is where it gets interesting. i found this thread
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
I understood that this Odin One Click application would fix my
problem...
Well it did not. What happened now is i boot the phone and see an AT&T screen that reads
I can't enter Recovery Mode and i can't boot into Download Mode i am simply stuck at this screen with no usb connectivity.
I bought the phone from an ad posted on Kijiji, so i contacted the previous owned for the original sales reciept. I would like to avoid sending the phone away at all costs. Anyways, thanks in advance for the advice!!!
How do you know theres no usb sopport? Is windiws giving you a popup message about device malfunctuion?
Listen, im a developer here on xda, first off it sounds like a doft brick and if I can I will get you fixed up, but first I need to verify the no usb support. As it will be a big problem.

Ok, good sign. Clam down first and we will get you fixed up. Hold on a minute. I'm on my phone right now and I got a lot to type.
Brb.
Edit: before I get in to deep, pull battery and start up odin on click "ota jh6" on pc. Plug in usb into phone, once you do that with one hand > hold vol up+down, & with other hand place battery in phone, download screen should come on, try it now.

as a side note i9000 button combo is only volume button down, but seeing the att boot screen i figure the att kernal got in there and that may make it both buttons. also the link i just gave you as download meathods listed you can try.
If you're having difficulty getting into Download or Recovery Mode, you may want to set up a Jig. Its a resistor setup, amounting to 301KOhm that when connected to your phone will force Download Mode.
From there, I think you should be able to reflash to a different ROM.

Well lets not jump to a jig just yet. The only time you should need a jig is all else fails, but yes a jig works everytime unless you've fried the motherboard.

I won't be able to setup a Jig tonight, tomorrow at the earliest. I'd like to see it in action actually
since i probably won't make a jig until i have no other options (i'm a lazy stoner) i'll try the software method.
although i'm definitely making a jig!
Johnsondr80, you're a great folk. Attitudes like yours is what one wants to see in this forum.
No luck
when i have the usb connected in my phone the AT&T screen doesn't like to display. i tried both buttons, as well as just volume down. Hmm......to The Source for resistors in the morning?

Yes you will need a jig, I built one the other day for $2.13 (pack of tens) and saved a $400 device.
Any way use the odin I linled you to to get to jf6 stock enclair, dont worry about root as you already have the update.zip on your sdcard (rommanager did this for you according to what your op said) and once your stock get rommanager from market and get your rom. Put rom in sdcard, not in any folder. And after that in rommanager choose "install from sdcard" and navigate to your rom and select it /check mark both "wipe data" and "back up current rom" watch magic happen. When first boot takes place it can take up to 5-10 minutes to boot, be calm and wait.
After its up you will be rooted and all will be well with the world.
Check me out on my thread, in captivate android development, my rom is called fusion and will be updated tomorrow.
Hope to see you there.

Heh, sorry I'm in Comp Eng...the first thing I think is to break out the resistors and solder .
The Source should have you covered for resistors...if you can't find 300K or 301K (unlikely) pick up 3x100K and 1x1K , connect in series, same thing.
Hold on a second, i don't have the I897 i have the I9000M (Vibrant)

can someone post a photo of a jig? from maybe both sides? a closeup of the connections would be nice. just to have a visual reference
I've seen a few pictures out there, but unfortunately I can't dig up those threads. Basically your going to take a Micro-B USB cable and chop it. Between pins 4 and 5, connect the 301Kohm resistance, then connect it to your phone while it is shut off. This should force download mode. To my understanding, different resistance combinations can be used to force different modes.

I know i will get flamed for this and the thread will probably be closed but i have searched google asked in 3 diffrent forums and have found nothing that worked, and the last thing i could thing of was to ask on xda. It wouldn't be that big of deal but i was scammed on ebay when selling a phone and i cannot lose another one or i will be using a razr untill christmas. (Im 14 and have no income)
I bought it about a week ago, jailbroken and have had no problems untill i got in to chicago yesterday and was using the 3g. While i would be on the internet it would randomly lose service so i would go in to the settings and turn the connections off and then back on so it they would trun back on. but it would freeze on the settings screen so i would hold the sleep/wake and home button to reset it, that worked 3 times but it did it once again and when i tried to reset it it would just hang on the bootup screen with a little loading symbol in the middle of the screen and would turn it self off and on. I have tried to restore it but itunes will not recognize it. I know it is not bricked becasue i was doing nothing that could have of bricked it, but does anyone know how to restore without a computer or anything that might work?
Thanks guys

I was jk. It was a joke
Now don't flame at me thinking that I'm a fan boy. Trust me. I HATE the iPhone. Apple's other products I'm alright with but I would not use an iPhone if anyone paid me. Here's what you gotta do mate. I do this all the time because generally people who have the iPhone have no clue about the hardware. (I'm telling yah, get sumthin else. The iPhone is a waste of good money). Here are the instructions.
1) Head over to http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ and select the appropriate model for your device.
2) Make sure this saves with the extension .ipsw on it. NOT .zip
3) Fire up iTunes while your phone is on and plugged in.
4) Next you gotta put the thing into something called DFU Mode
5) Turn your phone off but leave it plugged in.
6) Hold down the power button + the home button for 10 secs
7) After the 10 secs, release the power button but continue holding home for another 10 secs.
8) iTunes is gonna jump up and down now (if you have a mac) and say an iPhone has been detected blah blah blah... whatever.
9) Now if you have a Mac, hold down option while hitting restore. If you have a PC, hold down shift while hitting restore.
10) Now you'll be greeted with a navigation window. Go ahead and select the .ipsw file you downloaded.
11) Hit restore and hope that it works.
Get rid of it if it works. Get a REAL phone lol

All i see is the phone ! comp symbol
I used 3 button combo,
tried removing everyting and holdin vol up+down then putting the battery
Odin doesnt recognize the phone and adb doesnt list any connected device
DOES THIS MEAN ITS OVER.. is it permanant brick?

Remove Battery insert usb cable hold vol up/down power put in batt release power button only keep holding vol up/down should go right in to download mode. I've done this many a time.
o/` Search the forums, buy a jig, doo-dah doo-dah,
People create threads about this exact problem, all the live long day o/`
if you get it up and going with the above meathod (should work) then definately use the 3-button fix next time. only once though because flashing bootloaders can be dangerous. once the recovery mode is working with button combo then flash speedmod (as long as the rom you want is on the sd card) or flash 2.2 then speedmod so the phone will be bootable.
also i'd redownload speedmod if you want to start over. could have been a bad download. also could have been a windows problem or a bad cable. hope you get it working.

I am on ROM number 3 and have yet to run into any problems, but will be trading an extended life i9000 battery to a friend who has 2 jigs. The batt was sent to me by mistake, and is being replaced without me having to send back (not worth the shipping cost to the seller), so that works out for both of us.

Ok lets get straight to the point, I got a brand new captivate from at&t. Ive always used custom roms but never had an android. So of course i wanted to flash a custom rom. So i prepared my phone and followed ALL instructions for flashing a custom ROM. I couldnt run any update.zip files thoe because of the stupid verify thing. So LISTEN, I took the patch that patches 3e recovery back to 2e recovery aka kernal swap.....then everything worked fine and i got cwm to load and installed Apex_7.
AFTER the install was complete i was so excited. I selected reboot now, the AT&T logo came up and then the screen went all jacked up(looked like a broke screen) then went to the samsung logo and just keeps replaying it.
So after seeing this i freaked out and pulled the battery. Then i went and researched before doing anything else i came to the conclusion i needed to download odin pre-packed so i downloaded the odin stock installer.
Now LISTEN I put my phone into download mode ran odin and it said it succesfuly installed after about 3 minutes. So i then turn the phone off then turned it back on, it booted to the at&t logo then the screen goes black and loads at&t logo again (constant loop that heats the phone up)
AND NOW if i try to get into download mode it goes to the battery screen with no animation just a battery and a loading symbol
ALSO( I have made a usb jig ) BUT my ohm meter will not read the resistance of more than 2 resistors when i add the third one it reads it really fast and then shows nothing.
PLEASE HELP ME I LOVE THIS PHONE MORE THAN MY IPHONE OR MY HTC.
Credit will be given. I know someone here can save me from the dreaded face-to-face with at&t!!!!
Edit: Also when i got the phone i noticed a line of dead pixels on the left side very hard to see unless u look closely think i could get the phone replaced by using this as my excuse. idk what to say to AT&T if i do have to return. But i really hope not ive never ever had such problems flashing anyphone.
Please do not double post. You already asked (correctly) in the Apex sticky. No need to start another separate thread.
I posted both places because my problem may or may not be related to Apex. If Apex has nothing todo with my problem then i have correctly posted here.
Edit: Im trying to kill 2 birds with 1 stone
You are not fully bricked if your phone powers on at all. Just need a working jig. You can buy them from multiple sources

Finally shed me some light. Thats awsome dude thanks. I made my jig exactly how they make theres it wont work. The only thing i can think is im touching the wrong pins. I touch the top and bottom pins on the micro usb closest to the 3.5mm headphone jack???
It takes allot of trail and error and if the resistance is not right it won't work. purchase one from somewhere, search captivate usb jig on youtube, should find a source

Now your spamming my thread with non-sense if you dont want to help then go on about your business. I simply told you I DONT KNOW IF ITS RELATED TO APEX OR NOT THATS WHY I POSTED BOTH PLACES. SORRY, you dont have to act immature and exclude me from help. (whats the point of this forum then) Now i know dont post in 2 places because arrogant people will be sure to add frustration to your problem.

Thanks il try a couple more times with my homemade jig if not il purchase one.
Thanks again.
You'll need to build a new jig or buy one(Moiletechvideos is what I would suggest), because if you can't get into download mode then you cannot be helped any further. And Miami_Son is right, you're not exempt from the rules. I realize it can be frustrating if something goes wrong, but you need to just cast that aside for the time being.

Ok i had my buddy come over and tried his jig that he bought online it looked like it had been manufactured just to be a jig we plugged it in and nothing ? any ideas
and i posted in the Apex thread to see if anyone could link my problem to apex then i also posted a similar story here to find a solution to my problem the Apex thread is just to narrow down the cause.
First, what is your phones revision ( on the back of phone, like 1008 ,1101 etc. ) i would just start over. Get that
phone in download mode, search for A10 TOOLBOX/captivate toolbox, everything you need is there. Two. Did your 3button combo work before? And your sure you cant get into recovery by your buttons?

I appreciate you taking your time to help. My phone is the SGH-I897 i could still use the 3 button combo before Odin and recovery but after i ran odin thats when everything got really jacked up now i cant get into recovery or download i think im not doing this jig thing right but if im correct i have a striped usb plug. With the screen facing down i have three prongs on the bottom and two on the top i touch the far right prongs top and bottom and hold for about 10 seconds. Thanks dude seriously I just got this phone and loved it but got tired of at&t bloating my phone with bs that eats my memory.
EDIT: the number next to the big CE is 0168 or what u might want is 1105 rev 0.4
EDIT: Also i dont understand what the diff is between rogers 2.6 and captivate 2.5 and how can i use these tools without a booting phone.

Does your buddies JIG work just fine in other phones? If so you may have a short in pin 4 or 5 of your USB port. Are you able to issue the "adb reboot download" command when the phone is bootlooping? I have ADB command videos on youtube just search for them for help on that. Either way if you can't get it resolved with any conventional methods, I can restore the phone using advanced JTAG just PM me for info.

Its got everything youll need packed inside. EX: it comes with the drivers, odin1click and 3buttonfix odin ( which youll need to do)
It also comes with the pda and tar files youll need, it also lets you root it but i suggest the one click root for captivate, get all that done first and well go from there.

introduction
I'm not kidding when I say UnBrickable. Modifying the OM pins means you can boot from USB, UART or MMC. This makes the phone quite UNBRICKABLE. There is nothing you can do software wise to prevent the device from booting into this mode. We are communicating with the unrewritable, efused IROM on the processor. It's the thing that makes the system on a chip into a "system on a chip".I am here now to tell you how to turn your Samsung Droid Charge into a KIT-S5PC110 development board. The KIT-S5PC110 development board is the platform used to develop our phones. There are some differences between this mod and the official development platform. The S5PC110 has a removable internal SDCard and no touchscreen.
Why would you want to do this? When you plug in the battery and connect it to the computer in "off" mode, it will become an S5PC110 board awaiting download of a program to run. This occurs long before anything like software or firmware enters the processor. This is the IROM of the device awaiting commands or a power on signal.
Because it is accepting a memory flash, anything may be put onto the device to perform a boot sequence..... Apple iOS (iPhone4 has the same processor) WP7 (mango supports this processor).
This will be a replacement for JTAG once we are able to make some firmware. How could it possibly be better then JTAG? Let's count the ways....
1. The only part required is a wire.
2. No shipping time.
3. No cost for a box to interface the computer.
4. Permanent.
5. Can be done as a preventive measure.
6. Gives the ability to test new Bootloaders temporarily.
7. Allows development of the entire system.
8. Removes worry about flashing and acts as a backup.
After performing this mod:
Remove the battery, replace the battery, your phone will connect to the computer via USB and await commands. Otherwise it will pretty much act like a Vibrant. See the Special Instructions section.
Modification
You will need:
1. Get someone who knows what they're doing with a soldering iron. If they don't know what flux is, then they don't know what they're doing. You can send me a PM(or email my [email protected]) or Connexion2005(aka MobileTechVideos.com). Note: I do not work for/with mobiletechvideos.com.
2. soldering iron - make sure it's sharp, if it's not sharp, then sharpen it, flux it and retin it.
3. flux
4. solder
5. tweezers
6. A relay (possibly- for the wire within to use as a bridge)
performing the modification:
1. tear apart your phone... Make sure to take out your SIM and external SDCard before you do this.
1A. Remove the screws.
1B. Separate the top case from the bottom case
1C. disconnect the display connector and free the camera and button assemblies from the case.
1D. Remove the mainboard
****VIDEO OR PICTURES NEEDED*****
2. Perform the mod as follows: Replace the xOM5 resistor from the top position to the bottom position.
*OR: remove the xOM5 resistor and jumper the center pads of xOM5 to the center pads of xOM0 or xOM3.

Thanks to ChauncyG for the device board.
3. reassemble the phone.
Special Instructions
This replaces the battery charging sequence. The normal battery charging sequence can be activated by holding power for 4 seconds.
To turn on the device, and operate in normal mode, you must hold the power button for 5 seconds.
3 button Download mode works as usual, however you must not have the S5PC110 drivers installed on the computer. You can use your custom rom menu option, adb reboot download, or use a terminal to "reboot download". 301Kohm Factory Mode JIGs work as well, but you must press power to bypass the S5PC110 mode.
To enter recovery mod, press and hold power for 3 seconds, then hold volume+ and volume- until the screen comes on then release.
Conclusion
Congratulations. You now have a device which works like a KIT-S5PC110 with an OM Value of 29. Now get to developing some serious custom software. See here for setting up the UART output http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1235219

looks good thanks for the post this will be quite useful
This is great so should i do this for the sake of doing it? What firmware is available for this right now? Should iphone firmware or wp7 supposed to just naturally work with this?
Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.
Awesome sauce! I, however, don't plan on doing this unless I do actually brick my phone. Kind of want to do it, just to do it, though. I like tinkering. I'm sure this will help a lot of folks out. Thanks!
Will this allow the use of uboot as a bootloader and if so wouldn't we be able to dual boot from both external and emmc?

Pretty much anything that works on the Hummingbird processor naturally will work on this. It opens the doors and will allow you to flex your e-balls while flashing anything you choose.
iOS and wp7 will take quite a bit of work to port as they are not open source.

Booting from MMC is possible, however, you'd have to open the device or switch a switch to turn on and off the xOM1 pin to boot from SD/eMMC. It won't boot from SD then OneNAND without hardware changes. It will dual boot USB though.
There is a member here in the Vibrant section, just left actually, name of ipetloudog. His Vibe died, and he said he would be willing to donate it for a good cause (i.e. this cause). Look him up, he may still be willing to donate his Vibe for this.

Hope you get it right and just mistaken on picture.
You marked 4 resistors to remove, you have to remove only one, third from left, and then jumper one of the middle pads (they are connected) to the VCC line (to the south, when looking at the picture).
Well, I did my vibrant unbrickable, it was really hard solder the wire to those tiny resistors, I really appreciate your work AdamOutler .I followed the video instruction and successfully restore the phone.

yes I kwow ,I'll delete the pic
I trying loading using Odin but it got stuck at "Setting up connection"
I then restarted PC and did it again and this time it went 2 more steps and then the screen became completely GREEN
Then I did the whole exercise again and now the screen became PINK
Now I am not even able to get into DOWNLOAD MODE...and neither do I see [mobile]![PC] icons.
Nothing happens. Is my phone now really bricked?
Please help! I am now worried about this
If the phone shows signs of life then its not bricked.
Also please don't create multiple threads on the same problem. It just clutters the forums even more.
I think I do not see any signs. It does not show anything on the screen even after trying download mode or recover mode. Powering on the phone also does nothing. I even kept the phone on charging the whole night but during the charging I did not see the usual green battery animation.
Is there anything left? Looks like I literally destroyed my working phone running 2.2. just by trying to upgrade it to 2.3 through Kies and then later using Odin.
I am very disappointed that how poor Samsung support is that a mere upgrade attempt destroys the phone. I had bought this phone 18 months ago by paying 540 $ and I now see it go down the drain
You can attempt contacting samsung if it was messed up with Kies but doubt they would do anything. But Kies is crap anyways. You can how ever attempt (or pay someone) to apply Unbrickable Mod (Adam Outler or MobileTechVideos.com)
there is one last thing you can try.
start odin on pc
take battery out of phone
put battery in
hold both volume buttons
plug USB cord in from pc to phone
if odin box turns yellow press start to flash a firmware!
it very rarely happens that you can do this but if you can, congratulations.
What odin u using ?

I contacted Adam and he has agreed to offer his expert services. Now the problem is that I am in India and I can ship it to US but it will cost me dearly when he ships back because of the Indian custom rules. They will tread my repaired phone as a new one and add 15% duty costing me more than original phone cost.
So I am thinking of sending it through my friend who is visiting US later this month. However, I was looking around and found this link.

Do you think this is something I should try? I already have good Arduino UNO toolkit.

What you should know is Jtaging requires you to solder 6 very small spots vs UBM is 2 spots (I believe) and UBM will make your phone umbrickable. You could find a tech near you live that's good with a solder gun? Adam has a thread explaining the method.
