Hello,
I'm quite new to android and after reading around the forums for the captivate, I was wondering exactly which is better, SRE or the Unleash the Beast?
I come from HTC Fuze and I am really excited about the Captivate I just got. And like most new owners, I'm concerned about what exactly I am doing with phone. Please help me.
SRE all the way
SRE provides way more options. Sideloading enabled by default, overclocking, disabled GPS logging, mobile access point, usb tethering... definitely the way to go until BuglessPete ever comes back (if he does)
I've been reading up on the SRE thread and it seems I have to do a nandroid backup and titanium backup but doesn't those 2 require the phone to be rooted?
What exactly is sideloading? I've been trying to figure it out but all people said that it let non-market apps to be installed to the phone but how would I install the unit?
I like SRE.
Sideloading is exactly what you said it is. Instead of installing via the Market, you just transfer a .apk file to your phone, open it with a file manager and it will install.
Seems like the SRE is the popular choice to go, but do I have to do those backups like the nandroid and titamium back up before I do SRE even though I need to root?

It will root for you no worries.
I've used both and I prefer SRE, I ran UTB for a month and after all the bugs were out of SRE I flashed it and it is awsome. Then get Ryna's one click lag fix in the Market and install it, you'll get rid of the lag and it posts quad scores over 2400, stock is between 800-900.
You won't be able to use Nandroid or Titanium without Root.

This is the best choice for sideloading apps. Very simple to use and it does the work for you. No need for an ADB shell or any of that, easier on noobs like me.
First off, Thank you guys for your post. I decided as suggest to do the SRE. Am I suppose to notice any difference when I finish up the SRE?
Also, any recommendation of apps I should get now that my phone has freedom?
change form UTB to SRE
I just received my Samsung Captivate and used UTB first, but am thinking I may want to try SRE, do I need to do anything before I run SRE, and can I just do this over UTB. I have not flashed any roms or anything like that. Thanks for your assistance.

you really should read through as many (all) the pages of SRE as you can, but since I've been keeping up with it I'll help you out. According to DesignGears and several others, if you're running UTB you can just flash over it and it won't matter.
just put update.zip on your SD card, boot into recovery, reinstall packages

I would do all of your backups and then flash back to the stock ROM and apply SRE.
If I recall correctly, you are recommended to flash to stock, but I read in their forums you can just do it over the UTB. Here is a link to their thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751934
SRE all the way! I'm about to do mine!

I flashed SRE over UTB and had no problems whatso ever..enjoy SRE its awesome being overclocked and stable @ 1.2GHz!
i flashed to SRE last night, coming from JM5 i9000 rom, this thing is smokin now.
I'm about to stay reading up on SRE, but can anyone tell me if this will affect any ota updates, I'm on jh3 now with UTB and that's about it. Also am I going to have to re-load anything after I flash this over Utb?

I was forced into flashing to stock when I did something--still not sure what--to get a blank screen after boot, so I decided, what the hey, instead of just rooting, go with SuperRooter (which I assume is being called SRE now) and get lots of goodies with it. I'm a true believer, what with a truly open market, no more bloatware, ext4 file system, etc.
I didn't do Nandroid or Titanium Backup...didn't know how at the time. But since I had been using AppBrain, reinstalling all my apps took longer than it would have using Titanium and I lost my app settings, but it wasn't anything to cry about. So if you're not using Titanium yet then I'd recommend you go to AppBrain, sign up, download the app, and run it before going this route.
It worked just fine for me. If there's a problem, just get Odin and a ROM to reflash the phone (instructions are available all over the place on how to do this, particularly at the top of this very forum). It seems to take a lot to brick your phone, so don't be scared to jump in. Learning new stuff is fun! Just keep a cool head if you blow it...you can most likely fix it in pretty short order.
Hello can someone clarify my issues. So I have default stock captivate and want to do some stuff. I need to root, enable side-load, unlcok and update to leaked froyo 2.2. What order do I do this in? I'm pretty sure root first, but if i root and enable sideload, will it carry over after I flash 2.2 with odin??? thank you everyone in advance.
I'm a noob too but I was HIGHLY satisfied with OCLF, an app you can get on the market. AT&T will hide it from you though so turn on airplane mode and use wifi and you can find it on the market. That won't unlock or give you Froyo but it'll help with everything else and also make you phone crazy, crazy fast. Go for the donate version - it's good karma if you can spare the guy a few bucks.
Also maybe check out the thread I just wrote, we are in the same boat Froyo-wise.

Pretty much anything you flash will overwrite whatever you have done to it anyway.
If you go to leaked froyo it is in Odin One-Click form and can be found in the development threads. You will also have to reenable side-loading, root, etc manually. It's all easy enough. Forum search is your friend!
Cognition, CDE or Deviant can be done using ClockworkMod or Odin. (not so one-click) If using ClockworkMod you'll need root. Odin is a bit more complicated but worth learning and doesn't require you be rooted as it does it's magic with your phone in download mode. These will all be rooted and side-load enable out of the box.
Your SDcard should remain intact if you don't master clear or format your SDcard. Two camps on this, one says YES! then other says "yawn." Your milage may vary.
Unlocking is trickier. Some say it lives through it, some have been "disappointed." (REALLY disappointed.) I'd search diligently if you require it.
I'd caution you to make sure you can do 3 button combos to get into recovery and download before you begin. And find your android_id and write it down. You'll be wanting that down the road.
Good luck!
so I got a samsung galaxy s captivate SHG-I896 from rogers and I really want to root it, i have z4root installed, but im hesitating. because i dont want to brick my phone, i have had an apple device, jailbroke a bunch, no problems of brick but android is a whole different story, so i would appreciate a few pointers, sorry for posting such a noobish question
Not sure about the Rogers version, but with the 897, if anything goes wrong, ODIN will return it to factory.
I have the Rogers Captivate as well, I was a little hesitant before I did it too but myself and a bunch of my friends that have the phone have done it with no issues at all. Do the permanent root, if it freezes then just pull the battery, reboot and try again. It took me at least twice to root it but it's remarkably easy. If anything really major goes wrong you can always boot to recovery and wipe data but I seriously doubt you'll need to. I'm just speaking from experience so don't blame me if anything buggers it up but to be honest it's not as easy to brick it as you might think.
Just go for it.
just rooted it
i just rooted my captivate with z4root, can any one give me any like tips/warnings/shoulds/shouldnts
Should:
- Get Titanium Backup and batch backup everything. This app will make your life so much easier and hassle free.
- Also, just be careful and don't go crazy with installing stuff you don't know about. Do your due diligence before flashing anything or installing any app or lag fix. Figure out exactly how it's done before you do it. This might sound basic and common sense but from the short time I've been here I've seen a fair few people complain of bricking their phone just because they didn't follow directions that were pretty clear from the onset.
Enjoy!
how to flash
im looking around the forums so, i copied this from the darky rom post:
HOW TO FLASH
1. Place the ROM on the root of your SD card.
2. Backup your apps using Titanium Backup.
3. Open ROM Manager (Downloadable from the market)
4. Choose "Install ROM from SD card". If after you flash and you have problems like force closes and you can't receive calls, wipe data/cache.
5. Let the phone sit for 5-10 minutes after booting.
6. Have fun!
is that all u have to do? no holding buttons and booting into some menu?
also will these roms work for 2.1 rogers version captivate? Because i checked on the wiki for the captivate rogers version and it said something about "optionally change the model in the update-script from SGH-i897 to SGH-i896"
I'm not the best person to ask about this unfortunately but from what I've read this is definitely one way to flash a new rom. Whether you're currently on 2.1 seems to be irrelevant as the rom will act as your new version of Android as it were.
A few things I've read, make sure you have access to both recovery and download modes, if anything happens you'll probably need to flash back with Odin so learn more about that before you proceed.
Best to start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
And finish by reading the remaining stickies and make sure of any special instructions for whatever rom you want to install.
I haven't flashed because, and this sounds strange, I don't actually have access to a computer at my house so I can't use Odin as easily to fix any issues that might occur so I haven't tried yet.
I'll step out and let someone else handle your flashing questions.
If you read the Q&A sticky it would've answered your questions.
As I'm reading about installing HC, Froyo or CM7 on eMMC, I'm curious about "saving" my current stock eclair rom in case I want to put it back...
If I make a CWM Recovery microSD, boot off that, do a backup... Can I just restore that if I want to get back to the way it is now? (assuming I just install something like Froyo to eMMC)
There are a few threads for stock recovery (check search). That will put it back like it was when you took it out if the box.
It's easier than trying to capture the partitions and data when someone else has already fine to all the trouble if doing it.

Thank you, I understand there are a few threads over in the developer section on how to get back to "out of the box" type stock, and I have read them and they all talk about using the done by someone else "images" or "roms."
They don't seem to apply as I've setup eclair pretty much the way I want to... so I am not looking for how to get back to "stock like out of the box"... but rather to the eclair as I have it setup now.
i.e. if I want to got back to eclair, I don't want to have to reconfigure everything all over again.
KidJoe,
Yes, you can do the backup like that, save it on your PC or something and restore later when you need it. I did that before.

Hi all.
Really sorry cos I'm sure the answer's around here somewhere, but not sure where to look.
Problem is, I had my 2.3.5 rooted and all was ok. I then had a problem a while back with Titanium (paid) backup that said that I wasn't rooted.
I've tried re-rooting and that didn't work, so now I've done a factory reset, cleared the dalvik cache.
CWM is still installed but nothing works on there. Can't install busybox.
Just want to take it all back to fresh and root the phone with the fastest ROM possible.
Like I say, I've looked all over here and various forums but can't find an answer to my specific problem(s).
PLEASE HELP!
Thanks

use this link to get a JVU based rom on your SGS.. it'll be rooted with CWM recovery and stuff.. after that you can choose to flash any rom on your SGS.. just follow the instructions in the op of the rom you choose..
Thanks Ishangoyal..
Just to reiterate, I can just install this on top of the phone as it is not and it'll work?
I would highly recommend this tutorial instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379650
It allows you to upgrade to ICS.
You're a diamond - it's done! saved my phone from being stamped on! ;-)
download super user from market.
