Remapping the end call button - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone, on the Cyanogen roms, im sure you all know, when you have a call on your phone, and the screen goes out, you have to press another button to wake it cause the red button will end it. haha Ive dropped a lot of calls this way, cause im so used to Sense. But i saw a post a long time ago (i think) on remapping this so it will wake but not end. Does anyone know the code or where that link it to remap it?

You could do that, but I would highly recommend againt it. The end call button is so intricately tied to other key functions like screen on/off, device on/off, etc. that if you mess it up you would be unhappy. Of sourse since you would be modifying system files you could fix it by a nand restore or a ROM flashover, but why worry about it? Just get used to waking the phone up with the menu key and you'll be fine. There's an app called button remapper in the fora here that is the easy way to remap hard keys, or use the link below to manually make the edits. Good luck.

Follow that link brother. I modified mine to POWER so I would stop hanging up on people. Changed it, and never looked back.

thanks il duce for the link. youre always so helpful.
i really need to get some extra cash to donate to you.
And thanks oohaylima for the encouraging nudge!

Waking from Sleep Mode (Tilt)

Is there a way to wake the phone from its sleep mode without opening up the keyboard? That's the only way I can figure out.
Thanks!
A quick press of the power button on the side will wake it up.
This is written in the instruction manual.
You should have read that before using the phone.
reaffect power button
is-it possible to use another button instead of the power button in order to power on/off the screen?
Yes - if you disable the setting that stops all the other buttons from waking the device up (to avoid answering calls and making calls etc when its in your pocket).
man that power button is hard to push though. am i the only one who has trouble finding it by touch alone? i was thinking of carving out an indentation in the casing to help my thumb 'find' it, but thought better of it....

what i do is set the keys to lock when the phone is locked then use s2u to serve as the lock. I havent accidently called anyone yet so i think its the quickest way to resolve the issue not to mention i like the way it makes my phone look

I saw someone did a simple mod to make it easier to find. Dont remember where i saw it. if it find it'll post a link.
but what they did was bought a little "nub" from a craft store and glued it to the power button to make it stick out more so it was easier to find. It looked pretty good and probably did help in this situation. I've thought about doing the same.
That said, I essentially did what Neva said in the last post. I use S2U2 (Slide2Unlock2) to lock the phone. And I set my phone to be "awakened" by any key press. And S2U2 is config'd to always run on wakeup. So I can't make a phone call by accident. it works great.
You can set the phone to awaken on any key press by setting here:
Settings | System | Key Lock | Do not lock buttons
Here's the link to the Power Button mod...

Amazing what you can find if you search the forum.

Oh no, power button went out...

Okay, my power button went out, which seems from previous posters that it spells the end of the phone. However I pryed mine out, and am SOMETIMES able to get my power button to respond by sticking a knife in there.
My question is can anyone get my an NBH that remaps my power key (or can I make one myself) to another key? I'm not sure what key would be best, I'm guessing power/back, knowing that I'd no longer have the ability to go back, but I only need the work around until the end of July when I can get a new phone... Thanks.

if only there was a Zimage of the super old keymap around
Do you mean a button on the top of the phone?
I got a Polaris (so maby this is not helpful).
But if you got some knowledge with hardware and got calm hands you maby can open your phone.
I had the same problem and my button was broken off from the mainboard. But it was really easy using a soldering iron to fix it.
.......
You should consider this as a possible solution... Its not to hard to open the phone and soldering isnt that hard either. Maby you got a friend that can do this. Or someone in your city does repairs of this kind (each electrican should be able to) its just fixing 4 dots on a 2x2mm big button..

I have it open already... I'm guessing I solder this button to the metal piece... this is pretty precise work but I'm going to try it, nothing to lose...
Well hell, I got it on there, but it's shorted, the power button is always down and I can't figure out how to fix it... I don't understand how this button works as even the design of it makes no sense.
Ok, so I never got it, pretty sure my switch is bad... I can short it out, and use the power button so I have wires sticking out, I'm still looking for an NBH that will let my move my power button to something else... like maybe long hold volume up?
Wonder if it's possible to do something with they keylayout files?
dzo?

Actually, the perfect power button would be the d-pad center button as I don't think I've EVER hit it before...
If someone can help me try to change it, I'd appreciate it. I know the method above won't work as the Vogue gets it's keymap from the kernel. I did some searches for unsungboxer but never found where it was described how to edit the keymap. All I know is it supposedly requires linux.

[Q] Red Button & Power Button

I'm trying to remap my End Call button so I can use it to "Go Home", and End Calls. I don't want that button to put my phone to sleep, just the side power button. I want to also free up my IE button for use with anything else I might want it bound too.
In my ventures to do so, I've noticed that both the End Call button and Power button are mapped to the same keymap. I had thought I had changed the Power button but when I tried to end a call, the red button just puts the phone to sleep, which is exactly what I wanted my side power button to do while I'm on a call.
Is this a bug, or a "feature" in the kernel?
im pretty sure its part of the kernel, it has been there since the donut days (the old keymap was crazy volume up was the menu button, volume down was back)
it is partly due to the fact that the vogue has very few buttons, the kaiser was a device that just worked with our kernels at first.
i think even changing the buttons in atools will not change the kernel key stacks like your asking for
although l1q1d being the creator of Atools would know a lot better than I would
I've been looking at the querty.kl file, trying to understand the keymaps, and what they're associated too... Anyway of running a program that captures key presses and prints out the associated keymap for that key press?
Hey! Post from the grave!
Did you have any luck ??
I was also hoping someone knew how to go about this.
I know there are ways to remap keys, but I'm stuck in a browser, and all I can do it put my kaiser to sleep.
I even tried atools keyboard remapper to no avail (awesome tool btw).
It's no fun when you can't exit applications d:
I don't mean to double post, was just hoping someone could answer this.
Krazy-Killa did you have any luck?

[Q] Menu key remapped as Home key? Fixable?

My wife was traveling this week, and she called me to complain that her menu button on her Hero wasn't working any more (it kept her from playing solitaire... ohh the horror). She said that every time she pressed the menu key it took her back to the home screen.
I thought that she had just been hitting in between the two keys and not directly on the menu button, but when she got home I tried and for whatever reason her menu key has remapped itself to function as the home key.
I did some searching online but did not find much information. One person said they just got Sprint to give them a new phone, and one person said they hit their phone really hard and it started working again... Does anyone know of a method to fix this, or am I going to have to convince her to get a new phone?
theres a root app in the market that allows hardkey remapping.
Is this the one you are talking about

That should work, or, if you want to do it "old school", here's a tutorial...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695936
Go old school!
So I managed to use the "old school" method to pull the button config file...
And according to the software the menu button was still functioning fine. So as a work-around I just mapped the home key to MENU, and my wife said she would just use the back button to get back to her home screen.
I guess it is more of a hardware issue then, since both the menu and home keys are sending the same ID... Ohh well. We have the replacement plan, so if I can convince her to replace her phone then she gets a new one.. if not she can keep this little reason I have a headache every few days.
