Is flash 10.1 beta hardware accelerated? Video isn't 100% smooth, I read on engadget froyo walkthrough that hardware acceleration wasn't enable yet on their beta, but is the public beta HW accelerate enabled?
Yeah, it's not what I was expecting. Here's hoping (for Adobe's sake) that it's not hardware accelerated yet. Is there any GPU resource monitor available? Would that necessarily show you if it's accelerated?
Sites which haven't been optimized for mobile flash don't perform flawlessly but those that have been (Miniclip.com etc) work extremely well. It feels as if you're playing games locally installed
theres not any hardware acceleration to be done on the nexus. flash just uses the cpu like normal flash, hardware acceleration refers to using a gpu (something the n1 is missing)

Porn on my nexus runs smooth! Large flash files aren't the quickest, but remember, this is BETA!
its still in beta, so we will see i guess. regardless its a step forward.
I think the answer is "sort of."
From the Android Flash readme:
Flash on Android supports software decoding for all the same H.264 profiles as Flash on the desktop, and uses the hardware decoder for videos using H.264 Baseline Profile and Level <= 3.2.
There are also a lot of Known issues in rendering in the readme file. My own subjective test was running Bejewled Blitz in Facebook. It ran a little better (smoother) on my nexus than with my acer aspire netbook with a 1.2 GHZ atom. This was much better than I was expecting given that it's still beta.
i find that as long as I have atleast 220mb of ram free, bangbus runs just find. the video is smooth, the audio is too but its a little out of sync at times. I once caught my browser using up 105mb of ram and the phone was running at 104 degrees too. Im running pershoots oc kernel, and it helped smooth out the flash a bit.
I just "upgraded" from a regular desire to the galaxy S and was wondering why the web browser seems to be slower? I was able to test it side by side also with the desire HD and it is 2-3 secs slower even on 2.2.
I thought this sammy chip was supposed to be faster than the snapdragons? I've seen some video comparisons of the nexus S browser vs the DHD and their score is even at best.
Very disappointed with the browsing speed tsk
Desire is CM7, very fast, SGS is very slow.

I am asking about their chips. Shouldn't the humming bird be faster at least

It's not just about hardware or CPU
Problem is, most of android 2.2 and lesser was built and optimised on snapdragon. Most likely, Nexus S is faster than any snapdragon since the OS is optimised for the hardware.
Another point is the lack of optimisation for RFS and SD useage. Most of android devices use a small flash for the system. Samsung descided to offer more space by using internal SD Card instead. While it is bigger, SD card are slower than internal flash.
You can always apply a lag fix and install a custom rom (Darky's is pretty fast) and your device will fly!
I don't think so. With Doc' Rom my SGS is very fast. Yeah, it was somewhat laggy at the time of original software. Flash a a rom of your choice and see for yourself the difference.
yeah but I'm talking about the browser. I have a side by side comparison between the two and the desire hd is at least 2 seconds ahead all the time! Plus the browser is choppy on the SGS, im running darky's latest
The screen on this baby is amazing! I miss HTC software but the screen more than makes up for it!
Try Opera, i'm using it on my SGS Darky's 9.2, it's lighting fast, i'd say three times faster than regular browser, even with multiple tabs
works very well for me
Hello guys..........
I have bought my Tp lately and today I decided to install a version of android on it.after the installation I decided to perform one of my heavy graphical game which name was Real raceing 2 but it performed very laggy. I used to play this game smoothly with a less powefull device like HTC desire HD.how can it be possible. In alpha versions of android for TP the GPU in not fully functional yet?Am I right?
Strange you mention that cuz I was playing cordy which laggs on my desire HD but ran fine in the touchpad.... I've had no lag issues on many games

The question then is "Which version of Android?"
You should try Xron 2.9 de-odexed.
Have you tried to overclock it yet? Maybe you should try to run it at 1.8GHz. And maybe use chainfire to change come of the settings?
thanks for advises.
I installed the latest version of Xron 2.9 de-odexed and overclocked the devise with set cpu to 1.8 the FPS raised a bit but the laggs are still exist especially in opening demo.i also have a bad watching movie experience because of the low FPS during playing back.it seems the software can not take the full advantage of adreno 220 chipset.I dont have any of these issues with the stock webos.
I don't really know if Adreno 220 is slow, or CM7 doesn't release this GPU's full potential, but heavy 3D games are really quite laggy now. We could only wait and hope for ICS, better drivers and whatnot.

try xronified version, it's working much better. Probably still not full potential but heavy games are working fine.
I'm not having any problems....I'm not using xron, I'm using inseason rom (which has been locked)...only lag issues i have are while streaming 1080p videos. Gta 3, real racing, ps4oid all run perfectly fine

Just bought it yesterday, posting from it now in fact. Absolutely love the screen and form factor, its perfect in that sense...however with touchwiz 3.2 it was just unusable. Went to overcome, didn't help still too slow.
I'm now on cm9 and its still just so damn slow. The browser isn't smooth at all, playing games like anomaly hd and shadow gun just aren't smooth and seem like they're running at 15 fps, and trying to play HD content just depresses me because it doesn't work.
So I feel like I'm stuck with an amazing tablet which is just useless.
Is the situation ever going to get better? Am I doing something wrong? Should I just sell the thing even though I only got it yesterday? I watched a million videos before I bought it so I knew what to expect but using it constantly is just a different story...
Thats tegra2.

I would indeed seem that Tegra 2 is a broken CPU. Never seen a fully smooth tegra device, even a WVGA phone running ICS, its not a lack of power, its just poorly designed and isn't able to deliver its power. I wonder if it's a memory controller issue. The PS3 also has a broken GPU (also nVidia!), but because its a single closed system its been worked around.
You CAN improve things somewhat though. Games arent slow for me, or the browser, but the homescreen is bad. Overclocking helps (running at 1.4ghz here with no issues), change the CPU scaling threshold to 65% increase the sampling rate.
Different launchers improve things to, but none are 100% perfect. ADW EX has a silky smooth homescreen and app draw, but scrolling widgets are slow. Go launcher HD is slightly slower in the homescreen, but widgets are much better.
Part of the problem is Honeycomb which is slow, the ICS builds we have now arent perfect, but they aren't built from Samsung sources. Once we have real Sammy ROMs and Sources to work from things should improve.

Not sure what you mean by the scaling thing but I am overclocked to 1.4 atm using NoFrills...as for browsing depends on the browser and the website, with the stock some websites are okay, I'm using chrome at the moment to post this and its just so sluggish...
As for games, they literally look like they're running at 15fps, its ridiculous.
Very disappointed, really don't want to have to buy an iPad but I just don't see the point of having a product like this that's so brilliant in theory but so poorly executed with absolutely no polish...how can they even sell a product that's this slow...

You are judging Alpha software (CM9) as if it were final as in Stable status. Things will improve even more when Samsung releases source. In my experience, this tablet has been smooth with ADW EX. Perfectly usable, no stuttering, almost no lag, speedy and long lasting battery. Hey and this is with unfinished software (ICS) due to lack of source! I even had a good experience with firmware LA3. Just ditch the TouchWiz launcher. It helps a lot. If you still want to leave the tablet, be my guest, your choice.

You can use SetCPU to adjust the CPU thresholds. It basically changes load at which the CPU scales up its clock rate, makes it more responsive, but wont make it faster at its peak.
Also, remember to make sure the CPU Governor is set to Interactive and not On Demand.

Tbh I don't think this is a fair argument, the thing shipped with honeycomb finalized and even had an update, neither of which was alpha software and they both sucked and were completely unusable. The fact that I had to root and am currently using cm9 just so that I can use the thing reasonably is ridiculous...
I'm using cm9 and it is a lot better but I still find that games don't run smoothly, scrolling isn't smooth and there's a lot of lag
I do have it over locked to 1.4 and have governor set to interactive as well as I/O set to snoop. Its at least usable now but its so disappointing seeing such an amazing piece of hardware gone to waste. It kills the iPad on every level but the software just lets it down so badly....
We just need to wait, and hope for the best with ICS kernel. Tegra 2 ain't that bad, it's like every other Tegra 2 out there, it has its limitations, HD videos are one of them. Considering what my job is, i get a lot of Android tablets, but none of them were completely smooth, it's Android fault mostly.
The best i got so far was Transformer Prime, but that's Tegra 3, but the smoothest one of Tegra 2 ones was definitely Motorola Xoom. If Xoom can be that smooth with Honeycomb when i tested it, there is hope for this model yet. Software is the thing that needs fixing, so this model gets what it deserves. Even then, it won't be as smooth as iPad, and with every new Android version i am more and more sceptical that level of smoothness will ever be achieved.

I don't think iOS smoothness will ever be achieved, its definitely an android limitation.
As for HD movies I've tried dice player, mobo player vplayer and mx video player...only dice seems to give a decent framerate but still has a lot of slowdown. Some of the other players don't even play audio which is a bit weird, but that's probably my fault not messing about with the settings.
Any tips for sorting out the video? Or will tegra2 never be able to handle it? Because if that's the case this is definitely a waste of a very good screen and while it'll break my heart, will have to sell it...
EDIT: also is there any fix to get 3d gaming to run a bit faster? Will doing a system wipe, dalvik cache and cache partition wipe and reflash help you reckon?
Tegra can play HD, but its limited in what encoding methods it likes. Its certainly no match for Exynos, which will play pretty much anything. Samsung really messed up by not using their own brilliant processor in the Tab. Frankly the Exynos is better than the Tegra 3!
iOS is smooth, but slightly slow. It doesnt react as fast as Android, its animations are just more 'sedate', but as a result, buttery smooth. The problem with android is that in the rush to animate it can microstutter unless it has the CPUs total attention. My SGS2 with a custom ICS ROM and a few further tweaks is like lightening, totally smooth and faster to animate than iOS. I doubt a Tegra device will ever be able to do that, but it should do a lot better than it is now.

Yeah I'm running westcrips resurrection ICS on my sgs2 and its incredible. Might have to hold out for a 7.7 instead, watching videos of it playing 1080p perfectly and its just upsetting me lol
If I can somehow tweak things so I can at least was 720p videos and play games smoothly I'll be happy. Its just that games aren't running smoothly at all, tried blood and glory, anomaly HD, shadow gun, fruit ninja thd, all very laggy as if they're running between 10-15fps, especially blood and glory.
Considering a wipe and reflash but doubt it will make a difference and really can't be bothered if it won't make a difference....

Yeah that runs okay, but then go try something like shadowgun or anomaly HD, its rubbish.
Once I cleared all Samsung's live widgets from the home screens, I found the home screen transitions to be generally pretty smooth on mine.
Most HD video chugs in SloMo though. Its depressing and sad. Not sure if ICS will do much, if anything to improve that.
Hopefully, Samsung will refresh the ~9in form factor in the summer with some version of Exynos.

Hello everybody,
does anybody know how is developing Mali GPU driver going on for our Note?
I think that graphics performance was a little better in ICS 4.0.4 then in upper version... or I'm wrong?
The most important experience I've is with the 3D game Let's Golf 3: playing is not smooth then with rom 4.0.4 stock...

It's disagree entirely, I think the reverse. Kernels with latest Mali drivers way outperform normal stock drivers. Ics improved on gb, and remember that jb is still in beta and Google have already admitted to issues with display performance which they're working on, so I have no doubt jb will be even better.

AW: Mali GPU driver
Maybe the benchmark score decreases but the real performance increased for me with the upgrades. There may be some versions slower then there precursors but in general performance is growing.

Hahaha (not laughing at you just at our differing experiences) - I disagree entirely with this and think OP has a point. In fact I already made a post about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2203374
Some games I don't notice much if any difference in 3D performance if any - off the top of my head examples are Dead Trigger and Riptide GP.
However for some others, for me at least, the performance difference between GB and JB firmware is huge. I'm talking about talking stuttering, uneven frame rates on JB Roms and silky smooth, consistent framerates on GB Roms. Examples are Let's Golf 3 (as already bought up), Real Racing 3 and GTA: Vice City. In fact (and I have no idea why) GTA:VC on GB plays silky smooth and at a higher resolution than JB, not sure why this is.
Concerning GTA:VC I, like many others, had issues that made it unplayable sometimes on GB based ROMS so I recently switched to Samsung Stock JB where it now plays without those issues but the performance of the game is much lower.
Its definitely true that performance other than 3D gaming is streets ahead in JB Roms when you compare it to GB of course.
One thing I haven't done is much gaming using ICS though which may explain our differing experiences.
another explanation is that the games dev havent optimized it for jb or newer drivers yet.
if thats the case its further proof of silly android hardware, os and app integration versus independant hardware layer, os on top and then aps, making apps completely hardware independant lol and overcoming the legacy crap.
I'm not sure what is this mali gpu thing but i believe it has something to do with graphic as what y'all has discussed above. I can see that my graphic performance has decreased on this JB rom(I'm using supernexus2 4.2.2) compared to ICS. When on ICS, I can play Backstab HD without any issue, but on JB rom(both 4.1.2 and 4.2.2) the graphic are too laggy and the phone itself would heated up.
