Hello there...
Love XDA TV, and i think it needs more videos.
aaaaaaaaaanyway.. You guys should make a series where you test stuff, and/or make tutorials.
Why am i saying this?, well, In all these threads, where Developers and people that make stuff then explain how to install whatever they made, .. , the explanation is sometimes not clear, and causes confusion. And well, some people have only 1 phone, and are too scared to test stuff on their phone, so watching some1 that has already done what they want to do will make the steps of installing whatever they want to install; very clear.
It will also, in theory, increase exposure to XDA TV, because alot of people search youtube for videos on how to Root, Degrade, intall Custom ROMs, Flash things, etc...
To sum it all up; A series focused on Tutorials, and Testing...the TNT show! -just made that up!
i know i would really appreciate it!
I would have to agree with you there. I know it might be time consuming but if there was a video tutorial to go along with the instructions it might cut down on the amount of people coming back looking for help when thing's go wrong. A bonus to this would be the deb's would have more time to develop great custom roms
Yea, true..true
also videos showing how to fix the phone if anything went wrong -i.e. CID incorrect, Triangle icon and phone won't boot....stuff like that
A lot of this stuff is already being talked about in the thread for show ideas. In particular, might want to check out the suggestion I made...

aaaaaaaaaanyway, are these ideas actually being considered? Do the XDA Masters discuss this in their Great Meetings? or is this just a waste of time?
I doubt they'd make a forum if they weren't listening. No harm in trying, anyway.

This is a test
So basically you're asking for what I'm doing with my youtube channel?
XDA TV is great...I have been watching a few episodes and like the content....however, the editing seems a bit strange.
Maybe its just me, but the videos appear purposely stitched together without any pausing or gaps between stories which makes for an incredibly hard to watch/listen experience that seems like a 5 min run-on sentence (much like this one).
just my thoughts.
Great! By video, things like how to operate, or install will be more easy to learn from.
Saving long texts and time!

I was Thinking about making a website that included all ROM/KERNELS/MODS/MODEMS/THEMES/BOOT-ANIM....
but to have it set up to multiple phones, the ultimate android bible. it would have a different section for each phone. and each ROM etc. would show the original post from the OP from xda, and then if they like it, they can click the link to go back to xda and download
i know i would already be able to do it for the vibrant (my phone)
but i was just curious if anybody else would be interested in doing this for the captivate..
it would have to be updated EVERYDAY, just like my VIBRANT BIBLE seen here
check it out, and if you think you can update daily with everything like i do, pm me and let me know. ( you dont have to organize it, i will have the website already organized and ready to go, all you have to do is post the ROMs etc. on it
EDIT: i am not advertising another website. i will not be drawing xda members away from xda, it will be just like a shortcut website leading to xda
There is already a site like this, its called XDA?

I suppose you have a point, but that seems like A LOT of work on your end updating it everyday for all the phones just to make it slightly easier for lazier people. I mean if you want to make your phone super awesome but don't want to do a little searching and research do you really deserve it??
I am completely self taught from reading xda, and I can do anything short of actual dev work, and I like that.
Not flaming at all, just kind of expressing an opinion.

well my main intension of making it IS to make it easier, but i wasnt planning on updating ALL the phones, i was going to try to find other people for different phones, so it wont make it any harder on me, i would just have to update the vibrant section (like im already doing, with my bible)... i expect very little income from it too, and all of it would be given to the people who are updating their phone sections
Hey gsuys i was wondering if anyone knows a video on youtube that shows exactly installing a Tom? Also can someone please tell me what a bootloader and a kernel is? I've been researching but i can't find anything since im a noob..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
I think you mean a ROM. Bootloaders are files which load other data and programs which are then executed from RAM. Often, multiple-stage boot loaders are used, during which several programs of increasing complexity sequentially load one after the other in a process of chain loading.
As far as Android is concerned, the kernel file is related to threading and memory management. It's sort of the map of the infrastructure that helps the other programs when and how to act and manage the resources.
For your own sake, take a week or two to do some reading and get familiar with the terminology, software, and processes involved with flashing a ROM. I can promise you that without some basic slef-taught information, you will end up bricking the hardware 75% of the time. Get to understand how the phone works and why other people have problems, and how they solved them. Don't make mistakes that others have made when the information on how to avoid it is here in the forums.
Many people are too impatient or uninterested in how these phones work to do the due diligence. You can find ROM flashing guides, but without some basic knowledge, if something goes wrong you will find yourself in panic mode. Just look through these forums. Half of them start with 'HELP!' or 'Phone Bricked'. Don't be one of them. Arm yourself with some information and you will soon be solving your own problems, and possibly helping others.
Good luck and have fun. The Captivate is one of the most moddable smartphones out there, you have already made a good decision. Don't stop now!

Agreed on sticking with 2.2 ROM at first, less chance of hard brick and they are very stable.

Whats wrong with reading forums of the rom before hand? Don't get me wrong I've used videos (my very first flash and my first GB rom) but I had done a good reading before hand. I had a decent idea on what I had to do before watching videos. =/

When I flashed my first ROM, I had read quite a bit on here, but I watched one of Josh's videos and paused at about every step! Bottom line here is, everyone is different and some people are "visual" learners. Having said that, I agree whole heartedly with the "read twice flash once" (then follow a vid if ya have to) mentality.
Of course, the videos are very good and simplify things immensely. However, what the videos do not show you often times is how to avoid mistakes and errors and how to fix them if you make them. This is why it is always a good idea to read through the thread of the kernel or ROM or what have you to see what has gone wrong for others. It can seem daunting to try to read through a 20+ page thread, which may take an hour, but that hour might save you 4 or more hours while trying to recover from a brick or failed flash. Add to that some peace of mind because perhaps you've seen or read about the same issue and can do some problem solving.
Both are helpful, but reading threads is essential.
Is it possible to enable on screen buttons for ICS without having a pc to edit the files? I'm running CNA and have to say its the only thing missing . I read the tutorial to enable them but that requires a PC is there an app to edit them with ?

Change the button mappings so that one of the buttons do not exist, and see if that gives you an on screen button. To the best of my knowledge ICS detects hardware buttons, so if it thinks there is no physical home/back/search button it will create an on screen version.

Why you need on screen buttons ??

There is such a thing called a library, or a friends laptop, hell walk into walmart and do it.
Also if you ask if something is possible it implies that you don't know. If you new it was possible you should ask for a port of this feature with links. I stand by the statements I said earlier
I think he posted this thread as a joke. I sure thought it was funny good one
why are we all such negative people, like seriously come on now. OP, they have a point, search nextime. But everyone else, you dont have to be so instantly judgemental and negative toward him. there is a polite way to tell someone something, and swearing only makes you sound ignorant like you dont know how to form intelligent sounding words. this site is for our hobby, everyone cheer up, geez.
You guys need to relax , it was a request . I know how to search I wanted to see if someone had the same interest or had it for personal use . Seems like the threads title was "My GPS doesn't work" CHILL
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I agree that rudeness is not needed but:
#1 You posted a request in the development section. Questions or requests should not be posted here.
#2 You should have posted in your OP:
a. What you are requesting
b. The conditions you are in / working with (status)
c. What you have looked up already
d. What you have attempted already
The last 2 are key - its shows you are not lazy and you are genuinely trying to fix / solve the problem yourself.
Good luck
I guess having one on here is frowned upon.
Sent from my De-Sensed HTC Vivid using XDA Premium HD app
Lol, no one is really frowning on you, all that has really been said is what you've been stating isn't constructive...
Yes, this forum is all about making things better and expressing ideas...but in a nice, polite, way...not putting down developers for creating sense roms...
So by all means give ideas, but be constructive...don't just state "there's no developmentm" state what you want to see, and if possible ideas on how it could be done...
So say something like this, "I notice the development of the vivid is lacking here on xda, I would like to see this change...is there anyway I could possibly contribute to the development?"
I personally think xda is about learning and sharing what you have learned...nit neccesarily downloading roms and flashing...but actually learning the process behind Rom development...
I personally am working on developing for the vivid...and let me tell you its not easy...HTC really did a crap job with the phones software when it comes to further development...I have yet to successfully instal this phone's dependencies in apktool...so if you really wanna see a change then your gonna have to help bring the change...start tinkering around with the system apps...start doing a little theming...then eventually start actually developing...its one thing to put something down/critisize/complain about...its another thing to actually step up and change what you don't like...
So please enough with these threads...I know your over at rootz, there's a nice thread over there providing tips on how to build from source...check that out, and if you get something and want to share then share at which ever site you'd like...but bring a change...by creative, be productive...
Sorry if some of that didn't make sense...I just typed whatever my 17 year old brain thought of....don't really stop to actually decide what to say...

Thread closed, me and OP already have had a brain storming later. :silly:
So I asked the question is there any rom built especially for gaming and got judged as an idiot . Is my request so crazy? I mean I like gaming on my phone and I want my phone tweaked for gaming everyone uses their phone how they see fit. Devs make roms for various reasons such as bloatware removal, speed, theming, etc. What's so idiotic about wanting a custom rom built for the gamers? I'm sure all of you are geniuses and my question was so beneath you right . Well I got a pm and a dev is working on it so I guess I'm not as shallow as the judgmental trolls would believe me to be.
So you start a brand new thread? Seems like a waste.
And if you really wanted a ROM for gamers I would suggest that you learn to build ROMs on your own so that you can customize it exactly how you want.

Calm down, bro. Nobody called you an idiot. There were just questions as to the actual need for a gaming-specific rom, when gaming works fine on basically any rom and there aren't really any apps that require power beyond what this phone already offers. If someone is building one, I wish them the best and hope the result gives you what you want. I just personally don't see the point.

Nothing wrong with that at all. And acutally there are some that are better used for gaming and some even (I know of a couple for the E4GT) that were developed for it. You can find some by searching and then trying them for yourself. Then modifying them to meet your needs as best you can.
Thing is, is that you must remember that we can only read the words you write down how you right them. Words matter.
Also XDA is not about 'making things for you or anyone' it's about developers making things they like and sharing them with others to gain input.
Most often the developers here go out of their way to help and support others and teach what they know - hence the term developers forum.
Questions asked are not 'beneath' me or most.
However there is proper etiquette, decorum and respect. There are also rules for posting too.
XDA is super for those who have gone way out of their way to search, look, read, search/try/load and search some more to find what they're looking for.
You seem to have taken the advice in a personal negative manner and got butt hurt and had to start a new post just to show us..
Good luck.
Yes, it is in fact dumb, both the request and especially the way you asked it. First of all, what does a "ROM built for gaming" even mean? Do you want a ROM that plays games better? Is there a particular game that does not play well on what is one of the most powerful devices out there? What would a gaming ROM actually give you that the stock ROM does not?
It would be one thing if you came here and said that a particular game does not run well and asked if there is a ROM or configuration that can give an improvement, but you made a nebulous request and are surprised that people didn't particularly care for it. I'm not even a dev and I thought your request was in poor taste.
Enough trolling and such, some mod please close this thread. It seriously has no point to anything.
