Hello,
I got my first windows mobile device Diamond2 as a gift today and looking for a good OS here.
Can you please suggest one for me?
I will also download some from ROM page and try.
Do not forget to look into the WiKi before asking a question
Taken from the WiKi
Shipped ROMs for Topaz
Cooked ROMs for Topaz
Radio ROMs for Topaz
Success,
Senax
Thanks friend for reply.
I was just reading the WiKi page and seen all those.... but I am confused what ROM I should select SO looking for a generic feedback on what is good what is bad.
Actually I dont want ROM to be loaded with so many app. Looking for similar to what I have in mobile now but updated version...
I hope your device has latest Official ROM installed.
You will get all custom ROMs here which are mainly modify version of the Official ROM and has latest SYS/Builds and new Packages (new applications like adobe reader).
These ROMs are good, but NOT all ROM will satisfy every one. i.e ROM1 may good for person1 and person 4, but person 2 and 3 may like ROM2.
So it is good to test all available food and decide which dish tests you a lot .
Hope this will help.
Thanks.
With all the respect to your very correct and right answer (prabhat), this is in my opinion, very first and tha main problem, why the more and more people will switch to devileshed i-phone. The main difference betwen i-phone and wm 6.5 dev. is the "user-friendly" parameter. In no discuss, the wm 6.5 is more professional with more the features then the i-phone. But the people would like tu use the phone with satisfaction and enjoyness. Maybe the right answer for TD2IN will be something from you honest opinion, what do YOU think, that will be best solution for him/her. The ROM, which is stable, fast, simple, user friendly. The people need some help ... Have a nice day.
Here is my answer

Hey I am also new here but managed to get my ROM here
I tried several available here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Cooked_ROMs_for_Topaz but atlast I am using Photon ROM and I am happy.
You may not like the same, but you need to atleast try 3-4 and select one that suite your usage/style etc.
I liked Dutty's ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=579076
And Photon ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943396
As Dutty is not updating and Photon ha much stable and good so I am using that.
PIng me if you need more help.
Thanks for the reply friend.
I will start my process tonight and let you all know how it goes...
thank you

Did you get your ROM ?
I am still in the process to find my cup of tea...
I started with Dutty's ROM... but this has old version... so started picking others.
Now I have tested below softwares but yet to finilise one:
1) Energy ROM - The Energy Standard one
2) CR192 Mozart OS
3) Photon ROM OS - Stock edition one
I like the stock rom apprach of photon and energy, but energy has lots of application pre installed which I dont want. If I see CR192 that is also very good pick. So I am looking at battery life now and should be finilise in 2 -3 days.
thanks
energy roms and photon roms are great...
Energy ROM FTW
I tried a few ROMs with my Topaz and settled at Energy ROM (with start menu at top).
I used to install a load of stuff with each ROM and this was the most complete ROM with the most flexible Sense UI. The only 2 apps I needed to install on top of Energy is Skype and TomTom Navigator.
I like that it has the manual rotate programmed on holding the Answer button (I used to install a keyboard extender to do it before using Energy ROMs) so it can manually rotate apps not built for auto rotate like Tomtom. More importantly, I can turn off auto rotate on apps coz often I don't want auto rotate like when Im lying on couch/bed reading or using it for music. Fark I hate the UI rotating when I dont want it to! I find auto rotate an annoying gimmick made popular by Apple. Just gimme manual rotate, thx.
I prefer Resco Explorer to Total Commander but I havent bothered to install Resco and live fine with Total Commander that comes with the Energy ROM. I understand that Resco is not freeware so they can't include it.
I like that all the JAVA and DOTNET stuff is all done, has a good wireless hotspot app already, Opera with max tabs set for more than 2 already, TCPMP media player working well, RSS feed app, Twitter, Stocks tab .... I could go on and on. It pretty much has all the good freeware and tweaks and all the hard work already done for you.
I don't use my Topaz daily now, but I still use the same version of Energy ROM on my Blackstone (Touch HD) as my personal mobile phone. I used to also carry the Topaz with a data only SIM in it for internet access, but now I use a Dell Streak (android) to do that. Yeh Im crazy I carry TWO phones everywhere!
IF you wanna get up and going right out of the box, Energy ROM is the most complete and ready for the Topaz.
Instead I Liked Photon ROM and CR192 Mozart and currently running with Photon UX Edition.
I liked Energy, but that is toooooo bulky with so many applications which I dont require and to me looks ugly on my device and I can not remove those. In case of Photon ROM I dont have any extra stuffs so I can Install what I need not what some one gives me to use, whihc I dont require. I understand that there are many who may like what is given on the ROM that they use... but I like to have my stuff in my device.
Photon UX - plus Chinese support + handwriting ftw!
I've tried many ROMs in search of a better replacement for my TD2's sluggish official ROM (SEA version), and I've fallen in love with Photon UX edition and its professional looking background art.
Even better, I have managed to install Xyam's East Asian fonts support, Guobi for pinyin and character inputs, and Samsung's simple + traditional Chinese handwriting input V3.0 (my version comes from sanxingshouxieshurufa_8313 and fits the screen perfectly). Don't bother trying out the menu icon for the Samsung input though, the options don't work, only full screen handwriting is enabled. Otherwise, everything works perfectly as far as I can tell!
Thank you all for this thread which gave me a basic idea of what rom software I should download. I will download Photon ROM now... need to findout which edition I need there
Thank you all.
I have couple of questions in Photon ROM while downloading different edition of it... but this forum prevent me to post in the photon thread. Do I need to contact the owner of photon rom for this?

Thanks. I bricked my Tmobile wing 2 days out of the box and all I had to do was follow the instructions to bring it back.
There are a myriad of ROM choices. Can somebody recommend one to start with . I want the touch stuff, the cube, Microsoft office, the eight button comm center. Id like to overclock a little, and free up some memory.

I reccommend ITJE's TOUCH-IT rom or ASERG's ROM. I have used them both for prolonged periods of time and have been extremely pleased with both.

test it. and ask you the question: what is the difference between AT&T, T-Mobile and O2...
all the same and completely different!
lol
Exactly. Each one has ups and downs but they play a part only in EACH individual's personal usage.
itje's TouchIT and ITsBlack are usually the latest and greatest in porting. Although, at the momment, we're all using the same build. Currently his newer builds are more about speed. His ROMs are Herald ROMs but you can switch the keyboard layout to almost completely match the Wing if you have a wing.
Ttran's Open Touch tend to go for functionality and pizaz. (sp!) They look good and do everything but wash your car. His ROMs are Wing ROMs but you can switch the keyboard layout to almost completely match the Herald if you have a wing.
Papamopps makes modded itje's ROMs that run a bit more to meet his needs. They tend to be very to the point and do their job without messing around. Like itje's, they're Herald ROMs.
Ivan: My clean series ROMs tend to be plain, clean, stripped down, no frills ROMs. No extra programs or features. I usually include both Herald and Wing versions with native keyboard drivers.
kidnamedAlbert makes the Carbon series, which are customized ROMs made in my kitchen. He's the newest member of the cooking crew, so we're expecting great things out of him.
Lastly, you can also use my kitchen to create a version of my own ROM with the apps you want.
But this "review" is not a review of ROMs but a "review" on the cooks who make them.
Forgive me if I forgot anybody.

you forget Aserg's rom
Also:
There's also PDAViets roms. This one is excellent:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364706
It was my Favorite until ttran's Open Touch Lite. Been using this one for a long while now and its the Best. I've tried alot of others but without Internet Sharing I'm dead in the water.
For my first flash I used TTran's Open-Touch ROM (3.0 Biggy), it was really nice for a first timer who doesn't have the experience needed to tweak things.
Once you play with your phone enough you'll become more comfortable with installing/tweaking programs and you may want different things out of your phone (biggy has every feature you can imagine), this is where the clean/lite roms come in with more storage for the apps you use & more customization.
I haven't tried Aserg's or PDAViet's, so unfortunately, I can't comment on them.
Oh yeah and lets not Forget:

I have been using Aserg for a while now.. D

Hi
I have tried many different roms and are currently at dutty 2.6.
How far has wm6.5 rom come?
I wish to start a thread where we discuss what is best of 6.1 or 6.5
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=500523
you guys rock
The way you take no prisoners with people who might not have time to trawl through a couple of thousand posts before asking a genuine question. You guys really are as hard as nails... no scratch that, maybe youre inadequate teenagers struggling to find a meaning to life beyond a slightly disappointing smartphone?
Hi there,
Don't judge everyone by some people's attitude on here...
It is a tough question though, but it would be good to hear peoples views on whether they prefer wm 6.1 or wm 6.5 - and why
I'm just changing from Miri's 6.5 v 5.2 rom back to Dutty's 6.1 v2.6 EXTREME, purely for the simple fact that I love the customisation that Dutty has done to Manilla and the integration to facebook/contacts seems better on Dutty's rom than Miri's.
Don't get me wrong, both roms are constantly being developed and both roms have their advantages, but for me, Dutty's 6.1 v2.6 hits it (and 2.7 will be better!!!)
I'm sure there are more features to 6.5 and it is supposed to be better screen operations for finger rather than pen, but the only thing I really noticed is the new start menu, which is good, but not very customisable.
Been round 2-3 times with these 2 roms, but think I always end up going back to Dutty's.
Give them both a try though as it is each persons perspective on what they prefer from their HD.
I am not being hard and I don't mind helping, just look at some of my posts, but the problem is every couple of days someone asks: Is this rom better for me? Is X rom faster than Y rom? Can you recommend a rom for me?
Just do a search in this rom forum to see how many have been asking the same thing OVER and OVER, or better yet just look at the last few pages!!
The thing is we are all here for the same reason, we all want the fastest, greatest etc, but it is all subjective. The rom that is perfect for me is maybe not even close to good for you....
As for being a teenager, lol, I wish
tru and i feel all of u but the question is which rom do u prefer .... i havnt tried 6.5 but i would like to read reviews on the differences....and no opinons on wat u like for urself who cares wat u want this post is basic info on the differences between 6.1 and 6.5.
its funny cause u sr and jr members are here to help us newbies out and u dont... i had to teach myself how to mode my hd and how to change the roms now im teaching myself on how to mod and create my own rom.... i do wana thank u guys for creating these roms but u guys are here to help not talk slick but please everyone google ur questions first before just postin anywhere... but i feel this is a descent thread
i havent tried 6.5 and im not going to
when 6.5 is released properly then the good version will be properly put on the hd
until then its 6.1
My goodness, lets everyone just start a new thread for no other reason than laziness to read and experiment, dont encourage this kind topics as it sets a bad example!
seams to me that "IT" guys have a chip on there shoulder, all we are looking for is a bit help. We are not all computer experts. We all want the same thing though. The best and fastest rom. It does not matter what is good for me is not good for you. We are simply asking a question. And you are the guys to answer the questions. Yes you could do a search and get about 10,000 answers. Do you have time to go thru all them for the one you are looking for. COME ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Once again this is heading down the path of another useless thread as everyone is talking off topic again.
This is why MOD's delete threads like this as they just go round in circles with people complaining etc etc etc.
If you want this thread to remain open, start talking about the topic again, otherwise thread will close very soon. I'm actually surprised its still open.
Anyway, ON TOPIC, all 6.5 is a facelift to 6.1 with no real great improvement.
Thats my 2 cents!!
So true am new to all of this, I've been trying to put the 6.5 rom on htc hd and finding help is not easy.

I don't understand why everyone decline the question. In my understanding the question just ask about the advantages of the 6.5 in comparison to 6.1 ROMs here.
May be this question question the high-number-must-better attidude of many of us but for me this question is adequate and reasonable. No reason to harm somebody.

Maybe this helps: ll you need to know about Windows Mobile 6.5
Relating to this article:
1. Windows Mobile becomes Windows Phone
Surely no reason for our choice.
2. All new menus
6.1: Manula, manila menus, new start menu etc. from HTC
6.5: honeycomb today screen, new menus etc.
Both solutions are more finger friendly -> Its you choice.
3. Flick gestures
Like HTC with manila and some other options on 6.1, microsoft try the same with 6.5. -> Its you choice.
4. Better browser
Most 6.1 ROMs here use Opera and 6.5 the new internet explorer. -> Its you choice.
7. Better looking lock screen
There are many 3th party applications which allow this also on 6.1 ROMs. -> Its you choice.
8. Improved e-mail and messaging
I didn't check this with current 6.5 ROMs but it seems to be, that HTC (on old 6.1 ROMs) made the same.
So, after all this points, for me there is no big advantage between the new 6.5 ROM and the old 6.1 ROMs with HTC applications like manila.
It's only your choice, if you prefer manila or honeycombs, the solutions from HTC or Microsoft.

For me it was the lock screen in WM6.5 that sold it to me. I used to use S2U2 but found it a little bit buggy and would sometimes crap-out when using flipit/gyrator etc etc. The default WM6.1 lock does a job but it's exactly pretty looking.
But the WM 6.5 lock? 'Tis glorious! I'm loving being able to jump straight to different notifications and it just looks so good as well.
Other aspects of WM6.5
I was using Dutty's v2.6 (and had been using Dutty's ROMs since the first Xtreme Test came out) and couldn't recommend it highly enough; it really is a fantastic ROM. I am missing a lot of the nice little features the the Rhodium Manila brings in.
I'm currently using Miri's v6.1 Premium (and thinking about upgrading to the new v7.0) with TF3D running on top of it. I ran with the Titanium interface for a bit but Manila if definitely better for me and the way I use my phone.
But part of me thinks I might just go back to Dutty's v2.6. As I mentioned above, there a just so many lovely little features in the Rhodium ROMs cooked by Dutty that I'm missing. No sleight on Miri's work you understand; there are many bugs reported when trying to integrate Rhodium with WM6.5 so I think the final advice has to be that if you want all the niceness of the Rhodium ROMs (and believe me, they are nice!) you need to run WM6.1 underneath.
I guess we'll just have to wait for the Diamond2/Touch Pro2 to get their WM6.5 upgrades in the Summer to see how Manila3 works alongside WM6.5.

That is exactly what I wanted to hear! Magic!
I used Duttys 2.4 ROM earlier, loved it.
I installed Davideucks wm6.5 rom yesterday, I love the speed of the Titanium menu, feels really smooth, so does the start-menu and mail inbox.
But like dom_mitchell1 i miss some small stuff from manila/duttys ROM.
Things I dont like about WM 6.5 is that I dont think we cant customzie the main Titanium menue, yet? For instance I would like it to launch Opera instead of IE.
I liked the new Manila calendar better.
Today screen only shows one appointment. I dont know why they dont use all that empty space they left in the lock-screen, its perfect for showing multiple appointments.
Moving icons the way you want them in the new sart-menu is a hassle.
Hearing that Dutty is moving to 6.5 is really great.
I bet he will bring great stuff to it.
OFFTOPIC: IMO, the biggest factor for chosing either wm6.1 or wm6.5 is personal choice, based on several factors: functionality, looks, speed, customization, compatibility. Thats why it is really difficult to chose the perfect ROM for everybody. This debate between newer members asking this sort of questions and older members becoming sick and tired of answering them is old and it will last forever, I guess. No matter how many times you say to a new member: go read wiki, etc, there will ALWAYS be smb. new coming and asking the same question tomorrow. I, personally, prefer to help instead of suggesting: go read, but sometimes I am way too lazy to present a proper answer, hence I just ignore the question. I believe this should be the solution to this, but everybody treats it differently.
ONTOPIC: I have tried 20+ ROMs for HD, most of them wm6.1, but now i'm on Davide wm6.5 rom and i dont wanna go back. why?
at the beginning its the looks. I guess i just grew tired of the dark, black HTC customization. Also, manila was not suitable for me, i didnt use 70% of the features, i guess: didnt use favourite people tab (its easier to dial directly from phone app.), didnt use financial info tab (not interested), didnt use internet tab (i can easily just open Opera from programs) etc.
Wm6.5 is finally moving at an acceptable speed, the Start menu looks great (although it lacks customization mostly), and from the home screen i can listen to music, see photos, see the wheather (by using titanium weather 2.2) and I can use some HD-quality pictures as background. Also, email, sms lists look neater, more classy. the softkey menus are bigger, more finger-friendly. These are reasons enough for me to use wm6.5 and not come back to 6.1. Not to mention being a smart-ass among my friends with HTC HD and stock ROM.
So if you go rather towards new, imperfect technically-wise ROMs, I advice you to go to 6.5. It is fully utilisable. I actually used the previous Davide ROM for a week!!, which is quite a lot of time in my recent days. If you prefer much functionality and perfect, 100% reliable device, go for wm6.1 roms..

Yes, like 6.1 was a facelift to 6.0, and 6.0 to 5.0. So what? The latest beta versions of 6.5 are clearly faster than 6.1 and you do not need TF anymore, which by itself slows down WM.
fair question. my advice is to sprite backup ur data. try out each new 6.5 rom cook then, if u don't like it, go back to ur previous rom & do #1 spritr restore.
personally, I found early 6.5 roms really slow & unresponsive so I too abandoned the concept for extreme 2.6.
I have decided to wait til it's officially released. I don't think it's anywhere near ready. oh, and it didn't recognize my sdd card.
the big improvements for me were the big X in top right corner (close button) and the opera like IE browser.
hi, i just got my x1 a few weeks back and im looking to upgrade the rom and what i realized is it involves many more steps than what was required for my universal before?
i upgraded the official rom via the SD card method and that worked like a charm. But what i dont know is which rom can i upgrade to on my x1... as it seems that they are all based on R2... R3... etc?
so what im lookin for is a fast and simple answer on which roms i can upgrade on my x1. The method is not a problem. The rom selection is. And plus, which is the best rom you would recommend?
thankx
The best way is, imho:
Check the threads here. In each, you can find a description of the ROM,
a discussion about possible bugs and solutions, and recommendations from
the xda community.
Basically, you can flash any ROM you will find here. Some like the newest,
more "unofficial" builds of WinMo 6.5 with the Windows start menu at the
bottom, others prefer the "official" build with the menu at the top.
Again others prefer either a Windows only ROM, some Manila 2.1, some the
"latest" version 2.5, these are from the "Leo".
Almost the same applies to the radio/rilphone version.
If you have some spare time, make your own trials - start maybe with the
ROMs from agent_47, NRGZ28, spikegotti, itje, MrRusch... and soon, you
will have your very own, personal preferred solution.
thanks. another question? what is "manila"? unfimiliar with this term.

Manila is the user interface by HTC, which seems to be a favorite of many
X1 users here at xda - there are many ROMs which are cooked with it.
Version 2.5 is taken from the upcoming Leo model, while 2.1 is from other
models, such as Rhodium and Topaz - those are the closest to the X1 from
hardware specifications. One kind of a "disadvantage" in the perception of
some users in the 2.5 version is missing landscape support for virtually all
functions, while 2.1 is fully landscape.
Manila brings eye candy, but also finger friendliness to WinMo devices. You
can easily recognize it with the big digital clock at the home screen.

I'd like to point out that the 2.5 version seems to be a little heavy for the X1.
The manila 2.1 from Rhodium\Topaz have a nice look & feel to them. Also battery life is VERY good with these versions (3 to 6 days on a single charge, depending on how you use your X1). Manila 2.1 does not have the Facebook and Twitter tabs, and has different Favorite and Home screen layouts.
My advise would be to go with a manila 2.1 ROM. My personal favorit is the FireStorm Rhodium\TOPAZ by Agent_47. It's loaded with lots of extra programs, and runs very stabile.
Excelent everyday use!
FireStorm Rhodium\TOPAZ by Agent_47? will give that a try? the htc leo is the HD 2 yes? and thanks for the clarification on the manila. been a great help. Is there much difference in the manila and the touch flo 3d cab? the cab seems to be stable too... and im not a big fan of wm6.5. ive never tried it before... how much free ram is there after the update?

Manila is actually a nickname of what was called TouchFlo3D earlier, and to
complete the confusion, you will maybe read "Sense" sometimes, too. In fact,
that is again the same. Most people here use "Manila" and versions 2.1/2.5.
To install Manila with a cab is definitely quite a fast procedure, but the real
performance of your device will not be as fast as possible - even if stable.
The free RAM is different from ROM to ROM, lower WinMo "pure" ones are
somewhat around 30% memory usage, the lowest Manila ROMs are at
around 35-40% with 2.1, 45-55% with Manila 2.5 - but then again, this is
different from ROM to ROM.
In the sum, maybe a Touch X 10.8.2 or agent´s "Photon" ROM (standard)
could be a good point to start.
Once your are happy, the chef most probably will not be unhappy if you
take care of his/her donation fund...
Happy flashing!
thanks buddy uve been a great help. one last question, i have just upgraded my rom using the micro sd method. if i wanted to go back to my wm 6.1 official R3A rom which was released a lil over a week back, could i use that .nbh file to downgrade as if upgrading?
what im trying to ask is i just put the R3a rom file in my formatted sd card and load the phone in boot loader more and let the magic happen or a more complex process is required like backin up and restoring stock rom?

I´ve seen your 2nd thread asking about speedy ROMs, and it seems you´re
already happily flashing...
Here´s the link for what to do in warranty/service needs...
yes happily flashing indeed. thanks buddy. just played around and got the hang of it. i understand it now.
Just got an SE Xperia X1
All excited to try it out, however it has just got freshly put on an WM6.5 (an english one, as the previous owner was using a WM6.5 Chinese one on it). This one seems to be operating a little oddly, and slowly. I'm almost certain it is an HTC ROM as it has a "HTC Calendar".
So I'm thinking I should replace it, what is the best option? It looks like the Android options are a little shaky, which won't do as I'll be using this phone every day (intensively, sending hundreds if not thousands of txts per month, and various calls, apps, etc...).
So... is there an excellent WM6.5 option? With SE panels?
Go for UnOff Infinite or X1.5, then read a lot about different roms and make a decision yourself. The best rom is a rom that fits your needs best.
Which ROM would make it the most similar to the Xperia X2?
Greetings to fellow NZer!!!! I tried a few ROMs and decided to stick with 6.1-based for speed and stability. I also wanted TF3D. I suggest you look at descriptions, pictures and read comments. If the thread consists of thousands of posts - read the last 5 pages or so, they will be most likely to be for the updated version in the first post.
Last time I went to Auckland, I noticed the abysmal Voda coverage, even in the middle of the city, hopefully whatever radio you have on will work well.
I also tried a bunch of others without problems, have to find the exact names, which escapes me now... Try a few each day, flashing is done in minutes, so play around, see how it looks and whether it performs to your expectations. Read ahead on the bugs, of course.

Go into the ROM section and check what's there!
Cool you're in NZ too, I haven't noticed any trouble before now.. but I've been using a Sony Ericsson Aino on XT, the Xperia X1 however will be VF.
From what I've seen I'll lose all my data each time I switch ROMs, am I right? (txts, emails, photos, contacts)
Would be handy if there was a stickied thread with the say the "top five" ROMs as voted by the community, would make it much easier to decide on things for a newbie as the ROM forum can be intimidatingly large to get started with
Just out of curiosity, may I ask what WM6.1 are you using?
Jerpleas ROM. The Unoff ROMS don't work so well with panels.

NUTS 10.9 - never a glitch. And yes, you will lose everything you have, similar to reinstalling Windows after a fresh format.
The best thing if you want to try many ROMs is to install just your 'can't live without' things and settings in order to check they all work. I have all my .CABs on a card, so it's a more or less set procedure. Speaking of VFNZ, some ROMs will run automatic setup and quite a few of them have wrong settings, so I recommend keeping the .CAB and skip the automated process. The only ROM i had seen with correct settings so far was the latest NRGY Cookie GTX.
thanks for that! Unfortunately my battery died and I discovered the charger is not compatible with NZ powerpoints! So my experimenting shall have to wait until next week.... but I've filled up a bookmark folder with a dozen links to ROMs I've got my eyes on.
Still don't know which one I'll try first! I'll simply have to play spin the bottle.

Do what I did - see the largest number of replies to the thread with the last pages containing a lot of thanks And screenshots, of course.
I've used 826x and also valkyrie v7, really nice ROM, smooth and also stable
hi
i also using Val V7.0. no complain. but need to view chinese wording and type chinese. any one can help?
rom?
what is the fastst rom wm6.1 / 6.5 that support sense 2.1? like jack 3.x for the speed and energy rom for sense design... but without cookietab, simple and clean sense 2.1
Make sure you check out EnergyRoms also, I'm tried all his roms, some still have the SoD bug but The "Energy Photon" and no problems at all...but flash flash flash....its the only way to be sure
Just my opinion,
Jerpelea's is the best for non HTC Stuffs, look like X2 stuffs inside.
Energy ROM or x826 Williyung for best HTC Stuff inside.
I'm strongly considering about installing a new ROM. But before I do, I have a few questions before I do something I'll regret.
1. Since I've been gone from ROMs and XDA forums for a while, can you recommend me a ROM that is: stable, (almost) as fast as a stock ROM, fully functional (everything works as it should and no crashes), no RAM or CPU hogger, yet I see some eye candy (like these guys here)
2. Is it easy finding themes or do I have to scavenge the entire X1 subforums and topics to find something decent?
3. Is it easy changing themes (icons and the whole works)
4. perhaps a link to ROM comparisons?
Yes I know I'm whining, lol .. it's just that I want to minimize regretting a ROM change

Well the only type of 6.5.3 roms that would be as fast and stable as stock roms are the Titanium roms hands down. But the Titanium roms come with no Eye Candy so you have to ask yourself what type of UI would I want to run over them? There is a bunch of UI'S for WM, The ones I use are WAD(Wishbar Advance Desktop), Throttle Launcher 1.2.1, and Infinity 2.8. Though development has stopped for Infinity 2.8 because the guy thought it be more beneficial for him and his team to move to WP7rolleyes it's still one of the fastest UI'S I've ever used for WM. Now for me I don't like changing roms alot also because of the limited rom flashing cycle so I always research hard on a rom that I want to use because my goal is to flash my phone and never have to flash again and so far since 11/20/2010 I have reached my goal. I suggest looking at NRGZ28 Energy Titanium roms they are very stable, lots of free ram, and good battery life. I've also here alot of good things about Christians's roms. Also if you going with 6.5x also consider the different build numbers 231x,235x, 282x, and 29x because each has an effect on older 6.1 programs. All my programs work good on 282xx but we obviously might not be using the same programs .
2) Since I've had my X1i I have never used the X1 theme section if your looking for themes use the WM theme section under WM Development and Hacking.
3.) It's very easy changing icons as long as there is a folder that holds the icons for the specific theme you are using, it's as easy as finding the icon you want to change renaming the icon you want to use and that's it. The WAD theme and TL theme I showed in the Show Your Screen thread I completely reskinned myself with my own icons.
In this Q&A thread there has been many people who ask this very same question read through there threads and the answers people gave. I hope I helped alittle .
Thanks for the heads-up. I took a look at NRGZ28's Energy ROM and I'm pleased with what I read in his thread and saw on the screenshots. Kinda tempted to try out the .sencity but it's not 100% yet .. So I guess I'll go for the Energy one instead since it looks almost the same(ish).
I'm about to backup my contacts, use Task29 and then flash it.
edit: shucks .. my battery is as good as empty. Won't survive a flash

Good luck with flashing. I hope you have a good experience with the Energy rom .
Thanks. Everything is good so far and I'm positive about this ROM so far. I'm a bit new to WM 6.5 as well as all of these customized things so I'll have to play around a little.
some 6.1 rom is really really fast because there are no stuff installed and you can install whatever you want

Any recommendations?
Well, Energy ROM has lot's of eye candy, but IMO is a bit irresponsive from times times.
I'm using Laurenti's 6.5 LITE rom, and that's the way to go for me. Reliable and fast at thee price of visual effects, which are pointless except if you're bragging infront of your friends.
My recommendation for you is the "826x WM 6.5.3 build 29007 - Sense 2019"...Use the following link to check the details about the ROM : http://826x.blogspot.com/2011/01/rom-x1-826x-wm-653-build-29007-sense.html
