5 Rookie questions needing 5 answers please read!!!!

Hi guys,
Im thinking of flasing a custom rom using odin.
Im running stock froyo 2.2.
PDA: I9000XWJPA
PHONE: I9000XXJPP
CSC: I9000XEEJP4
My phone is rooted and lag fixed. I understand that i need to remove the lag fix before and flash.
I updated to this using the registry hack. My questions are as follows...
1) Can i flash a custom rom from stock 2.2 or do i need to firstly flash a kernal with recovery 2e and then flash a custom rom?
2) Am i right in thinking that the PDA is the right bit to be looking at i.e when people say this rom is usable with JPA / JPO etc. The phone and CSC are not important when flashing a custom rom ( but still needed obviously )
3) If by some miracle of god we ever do get 2.3 and i flash back to stock Froyo via odin using a rom from samfirmware.com, will kies recognise my phone? Or will i forever be destined to flash "unofficially" through odin.
4) Looking at the PDA etc given above can anybody recommend a good rom to flash with gingerbread theme and apps. ( i keep seeing Darky's rom popping up in conversations ) and also have a link to it if you would be so kind. Im not lazy but theres so many roms all over i want to make sure i get the right one.
5) Once i have recovery 2e can i flash future roms over the top using rom mananger by clockworkmods and not have to go through odin? Or how does that work?
If i could get some clear answers to the above that would be great.
Yes i am a newbie at this but i am confident that i understand the basics, its just a couple of things above that i want clearing up before i proceed.
I know how to use odin correctly. ( close kies first / make sure odin opened before plugging in phone etc. )
P.S Yes i have 3 button recovery and download mode.

dude i feel your pain. i've rooted and installed custom roms on two other phones, most recent the HTC Desire Z. and it was quite a nightmare to just start off to know what the first step is, there are soo many different guides its hard to know which is what and what has now been superceeded by something else!
now i'm trying to get a custom rom on my galaxy S too, but really having a hard time understanding everything becuase guides and stuff are so different for different roms, gets confusing and dont know which one is for me!
my phone is already rooted, i have firmware 2.1-update1, i know i have voodoo lagfix somewhere installed. but my base band version is I9000XXJM4, which i hav'nt seen in any guide! where did you get your seperate PDA, PHONE, CSC info from?

also how did you manage to get Clockwork Recovery on your phone? i have recovery 2e atm. i downloaded Rom manager from the market and tried installing Clockwork rewcovery, but first it would not even download. then i tried next day and it downloaded it through rom manager. but i dont think it installed it. i went into recovery mode and then it tried to auto-install clockwork recovery in recovery mode! but it just hanged at zero status bar for like 20 mins. i turned the phone off and on, went back into recovery mode and it was still recovery 2e, how do i get clockwork recovery to flash as the recovery mode?

Type *#1234#into your dial pad and it will come up. If I'm right I believe that 2.1 is more simple to flash over than 2.2 which is the bit that's confusing me.
I believe that you would need to flash a new kernel with recovery 2e and then flash a new Rom over the top.
I'm a but confused though as to weather or not I would need to flash back to 2.1 and then do a couple more flashes to get the job done.
Can some one please clear this up.

1. You don't need to have 2.1 rom to flash, since you'll be able to do all the flashing using Odin and download mode. Just flash a kernel, using odin, that has clockworkmod integrated, and you'll be able to flash most roms and kernels with the clockworkmod.
Speemod kernel is a great kernel, and has clockworkmod included.

2. PDA is the rom part. CSC is important when using stock roms. I think that custom roms have CSC included in them.
3. You'll always be able to flash with Kies by using the Kies Registry Hack or by flashing a stock rom through odin. Kies will recognise your phone even if you are on a custom rom, but I'm not sure if it'll flash your phone.
4. I prefer Docs Ultra Slim roms because it's light, and you can customize them however you want. Darky's rom is a good option if you want all the features of a stock rom, and more. I use a Gingerbread theme with Doc's rom.

Thank you for clearing that up. Very helpful but unfortunately you now raised another question haha.
You said that I would always be able to flash through kies using the registry hack... but wasn't that disabled so the registry hack wouldn't work any more a couple of versions back on. 803 or whatever it is?
And you also said that kies would recognise my phone but might not flash it which if I'm reading it right.contradicts.what you said about always been able to flash through kies.

By registry hack, I really meant the Kies Registry Patcher app found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835628
Works on all Kies versions at least for now.
Like the original registry hack, this using this app makes Kies think that you have a stock rom and as long as Kies thinks that you have a stock rom, it will flash your phone.
In the sentence where I said that Kies will recognise your phone but won't flash, I mean't that it wouldn't flash without the Registry Patcher.

Hi I have the international galaxy s.

Firstly, I have rooted using Super One Click
And I changed my kernel after reading instructions from this forum.
I now want to undo what I've done and go back to the original phone
(and later maybe update to gingerbread)
I've spent a lot of time reading through this xda forum and finally I make my own thread and ask directly.. Sorry if this has been asked already but I searched almost everywhere.. Maybe its my lack of professional vocab.
1. I'm guessing to unroot, I just click 'Unroot' on Super One Click but will this affect my speedmod?
2. I have the 3 Button Method installed but I don't know how to safely test if it works. Just do the 3 button combo and if it works, go back by simply taking off the batteries?
3. So if that worked all well.. I would have an unrooted speedmod phone. How do I remove this speedmod? Stock roms? I don't know what they mean.. is it the default firmware? do I have to flash it in? If I install that would that automatically replace my speedmod?

I`ve root my SGS using the One Click, did the 3 button fix, and to my surprise manage to flash the speedmod k13e 500.. currently this is my build *#1234#

a few days ago, i read doc`s kitchen rom and download the cooked rom with this configuration
*NEW* ZSJPK v11.1 WIPE

Speed mode kernel

2.2.1 jpj browser etc with tweaks, custom bootanimation and mod sound
so my question can I just use the recovery update.zip to install the rom?
p/s I`ve no idea what I`m doing but it look fun to mess around the phone so I`m a beginner that knows nothing but I could read if that matters

I dont know if it will effect the speedmod but if you just flash the stock rom I think it will replace it.. just imagine if you are going to change from one kernel to another or update to a newer version what will you do? just flash it and badaboom the new one will replace the old one.. so it is a similar process..
Just one question.. if you have the EXT4 lagfix you have to undo/disable that first am I right?

To get back to original ROM, get your version from http://samfirmware.com.
If you used any lagfixes disable them before flashing (because the stock-kernel does not support ext4-partitions).
Flash the firmware (PDA, MODEM, CSC) with odin (repartition not ticked).
To verify the 3-button-combo works just power of your phone and then press "Home+Volume-down+Power", then it should enter download mode.

[Q]about rooting/installing rom/kernel SGS. newbie here.

well im kinda new to SGS. i currently use Go Launcher EX as for my phone to look good. and install some games/apps.
what i want to know is what is the best root / kernel / rom. and what should be done first? updating my firmware to gingerbread or installing/flashing root/kernel/rom?

my phone can't stay so long, it can only stay up to like 7~10 hrs, doing texting/quite gaming.
can only stay up to like 3~5hrs with full gaming.
my phone lags sometimes.. especially when exiting/minimizing(press home) the "Eternity Warrior" app. and
playing too long to "Cut the Rope" app.

Look around some custome ROM to flash and lagfix it, after that you have gain root permission and many stuffs u can play around

What's the best way to root stock galaxy s with 2.3.4?

First of all you have to download a 2.3.4-firmware (I'd suggest JVS, it's 2.3.5) and then flash it with Odin (you know how? If no, just let me know and I'll explain it ).
After that just look for a kernel that fits your firmware and also flash it with Odin (PDA-filed) and you're done.

Should be fine with it, can you direct me to the Odin rom in question please? I take it that its pre-rooted with clockwork recovery?
You could post the steps as it's for a friend and I can direct your post to him.

Hey guys I have a related question regarding kernels, posting here to save creating more threads.
I've come from Froyo 2.1.1 with Voodoo Kernel. Only reason I've updated to JVR 2.3.4 is because I've read this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225879 and realised I can have glorious Voodoo sound again on newer firmware.
So I've gone ahead and followed this guide to update firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1139050
However I was unsuccesfuly in installing madrooster's kernel, through Odin I semi bricked and through CWM it gave an error. Perhaps because I am not rooted? However I was successful in installing Dark Core 2.6, I read that this had Voodoo sound but upon installing the Voodoo control plus and running it, no controls were available. It said phone needed to be rooted to load the driver....I'm really lost, I need help

Tried to flash kernel - Think I bricked phone
I tried to flash a dark core kernel using SGS kernel app. Phone rebooted and showed funny colours on the screen with a robotic voice giving commentary every now and again. Now just keeps rebooting and showing random colours on the screen. I have not backed up the phone, but contacts etc are on google. Can anyone help?

i'm running android 2.3.3(flashed with odin) right now...i tried to install cyanogenmod using a guide form the cyanogen wiki for captivate..!
but a black screen comes up when i try to boot it in clockworkmod..!!i had to reflash android 2.3.3 all over again..!!!(man..did i get a scare o wat..!!!)
the official wiki says that itz meant for android 2.2
is there any way to install it on my captivate running android 2.3.3
or better yet can we install it without clockwork..????

CM7 will flash just fine over 2.3.3. I don't know if there is a way to do it with Odin, but you shouldn't have to. I have flashed it using that wiki numerous times over both stock and 2.3.x and, with the exception of a few boot loops, it has always ultimately worked.
If you are coming from 2.3.3, you will need a kernel with CWM that will work with your ROM. Alternatively, you can downgrade to 2.2 and follow the directions in the wiki.
What ROM are you coming from?

The kernel with cwm in it does not matter if it's compatible with the firmware he's about to flash over, the only requirement is that it has cwm.
Not going to be booting into the os after that kernel flash anyway.
Just flash the kernel with Odin and then yank the battery, button combo into recovery, and follow the rest is the directions...
Btw for future reference, please post ROM specific questions in their respective rom's Q&A sticky.

You don't really have to flash back to stock unless you want to (it won't hurt anything, just make sure you flash back with a bootloader-free package) and I would stay away from the ROM Manager installation method.

Just bought my first android - captivate. Its on firmware 2.2 build froyo.uckb1 baseband i897uckb1 and kernel ver 2.6.32.9.
I wish to install samsung galaxy s i9000 gingerbread stock samsung rom on this. So, downloaded firmware I9000DDJV9 ## 2.3.3 2011 July

from sammobile.
Used clockworkmod recovery. Booted by holding vol up down and power. Did back up, reistall package, factory reset, partition wipe and update from zip.
It gave message opening file..installing..
After that it just seemed to get stuck. Half an hour passed and nothing happened.
What have I done wrong. Pls advise. Fortunately, I removed the battery botted into clockwork and restored.

where to begin?
first of all:
you tried flashing a rom intended for ODIN/Heimdall in CWM
secondly, DO NOT flash straight i9000 firmware from sammobile on your captivate!
screen rotation will not work, home/back buttons will not work properly, there will be no voice when you make a call, and worst of all, you will be flashing i9000 bootloaders!
do not do it. we really do not want to have you opening another thread about you bricking your phone for doing something so stupid.

You'll have to read First and last few pages of the threads and get an inclination of what people are saying about the ROM. Noone can tell you what you'll like the best, its all subjective.

Im using SauRom... its based on i9000 and its really good
use this method ....its the easiest way

Because I wanted to use Captivate outside of the US, I was also looking for ways to flash i9000 roms.
I found some modded roms, most of which were odin based, but none of them worked properly. After multiple bricks, I just gave up and installed CM7 instead. It works like a charm without any problems and it's not missing any functionality from the i9000 rom.

I just resurrected my captivate. I think I am going to flash CM7.

why do you need i9000 rom for outside US use? the only difference between i9000 rom and i897 roms are that i9000 supports HSUPA....everything else is same..
ofcourse i9000 has more features....but to use it outside US, you just need to unlock it...
