The only issue I'm having is that when I send a MMS to my friends using handcent, they look terrible, like i took the picture through a screen. I never used to have this issue, is this ROM related, or what?
Im running DAS BAMF 1.6 with the bamf kernel
thanks in advance for the help
You could uncheck the box that makes handcent auto resize the picture to see if that helps.
It's somewhere in the send settings if I remember right.

i'm on 1.6 and using handcent, i have had no complaints on the pictures looking odd in any way. i have had issues where it doesnt display the picture when i receive a mms and i have to save it to sdcard to view it, that isn't that huge of a inconvience though.

Has anyone else had a problem with handcent where it starts off handling mms fine, then it suddenly stops showing them unless you start a new text with someone who had sent an mms - it will show up there but after you hit send you can no longer see that message again...till you start a new text....weird...

I noticed the same thing with certain contacts (not all) for SMS (I don't receive many/any MMS typically) using Handcent. I could only see if someone replied by attempting to compose another text to them, as the convo did not show up in the conversation list. I thought it had something to do with flashing the CM6 nightly on 9/7/10, as that is when the problem seemed to begin.
I ended up uninstallling Handcent and reinstalling (yeah, a PITA to re-create all my settings). It seems to have fixed the issues I had but again, I haven't tried MMS in several days.
I think I am ready to give up on it...I liked it solely because you can stop your texts from scrolling on the task bar...from what I can tell, neither stock or chomp can do that...

only problems i have been having is if i send Mms to somebody without a android phone they only get a error message of somesort.
Hand cent works perfectly for me. I had one little hiccup, but it wasn't hand cent. Mms quit working completely. Just had to go to /data/data/com.telephony.blah blah and erase telephony.db then reboot and instant fix.

The same thing happened to me a few times. I went into app > manage applications > handcent SMS > clear data.
Its sucks because you loose you custom colors setup (if you have them) but everything pops back up

Is there an other MMS apps as an alternate to Handcent or Chomp?
My main issue with Handcent is that it takes too long to get text notifications. They're instant with the default Froyo Mms.apk. Handcent takes an extra 2+ minutes for texts to show up.
I'm willing to try Handcent longer if someone knows how to make it receive texts faster. I enabled auto retrieve and roaming auto retrieve.
Kill the pop up on handcent, that speeds it up a lot.

Popup is disabled... I'm not talking about phone lag. The texts just don't show up instantly like they do with the default Mms app.
Then just use the stock. I just dropped handcent because it's too bulky.

I haven't seen any other sms apps that actually handle sending/receiving texts. Only widgets or popups and such
If you are looking for another texting app, go sms is decent too. Not sure if this will help you, but another option

I used this App for a couple of weeks since I fell in love with the black theme and pop up was 5 times nicer than the Handcent one but I found even Handcent to be quicker than Go SMS. But it is still an App I suggest giving a shot. I might even give it another chance to see if the updates have fixed it up a bit.
I just started using Go SMS the other day and like it a lot. I have been using handcent for a year now and Go SMS seems a little faster and doesn't have all the fluff I didn't use anyway.
was using hancent/chomp/gosms for some time now. just switched back to handcent. to be honest they became quite alike over time. it felt like chomp was always a little behind. no idea what's causing the lag on your phone. although i'm using handcent again, if you can't figure out the source of the problem, i'd recommend staying with gosms. they update all their apps very frequently and doing great so far. might increase the possibility of getting the error fixed which is causing your problem...
I have a HTC Magic and Handcent and the HTC Messaging App both send notifications at exctly the same time.

Personally, I am a fan of the stock MMS app and using SMS popup from the market. It's a very small app, and allows the popup similar to Handcent.

Explain the pwnage factor I haven't tried it as I wasn't all that impressed with the description...sounded like all the others with more visual candy (themes). Why are you sold on it?
I don't like how Go SMS doesn't let you restrict the popup to only come up when the screen is off. Also doesn't have the Gingerbread SMS icon.

I don't use popups, but there's a nice green icon I like. I suppose you could leave the stock icon on and turn off the go icon, then when you get the icon just clear it and launch go? Or use whatever you're using, lol.
Hmm
I have used ChompSMS pretty much the entire time I have owned an android phone and it is way awesome! And super customizable. Way awesome, never have problems with it.
I'm trying out go sms and it seems good so far. I may end up not using the popular because I really like advanced sms toast. It's clean and simple

My girlfriend just picked up a used Captivate, and she's liking it so far, but the only annoying thing I've noticed is that anytime she receives a MMS (picture - from my iphone, png or jpg), in the threaded SMS screen between me and her, it shows a little preview of the image I sent (just like the iphone) but with a big "play" button watermarked over it - and when she touches it, it shows the picture and plays it like a video for 5 or 10 seconds.
Is this normal? Is there a way to remove the "play" (triangle) watermark from MMS thumbnails or otherwise change the behavior?
not from the stock sms program but there are many replacement SMS apps on the market to try, no rooting or modding needed!
I like GO SMS Profor this very reason

Thanks, I got chompSMS and it works exactly as expected.
Occasionally, when I send a picture message with text, the MMS shows as a blank square in my conversation history. The recipient get's both the picture and text in the MMS but I can't view it after I send it. This happening to anyone else?
This used to happen a lot on my N4. I noticed it happened less when I ran the stock messaging app. Are you running a replacement, like the CM quick reply .apk or something?
Nope. Stock unrooted.

I have had one MMS do this do me on my Moto X, and it happened countless times to me with my Galaxy Nexus. Not sure what the issue is.
I think I read somewhere that it happens when you are connected to wifi instead of using 3G/4G. I haven't confirmed this personally though and can't remember where I read it.
I'm not sure if this is a moto X specific thing, but I've not had this problem on my previous phones.
So I noticed when I send a MMS to a friend (i'm on t-mobile , he's also on t-mobile with an htc one though i'm doubing that matter) he says it will say the image is too big and can't be sent or something like that. or that it can't be received.
I google about this a bit, and i saw a little bit of talk of it being a bug in the phone, and that you can't send MMS when on wifi but it would work when not on wifi (not sure how that makes any sense either). I saw some other posts about how if you send a message attached via gmail THEN send an MMS then MMS would start working , which also makes no sense to me as that seems so unrelated.
So previous to this phone i had a droid razr m (was on verizon before and even unlocked it for t-mobile for a bit) and i remember on that phone, when i sent an mms, sometimes the phone would say somethign like "this image will be resized before sending". the moto X never says that so is that a bug in the moto x? since i know that is an MMS size limit, but this phone never seems to prompt to resize.
anyway has anyone else had this issue?

YES, I have the same issue as well! Finally I found someone else that has the same problem as me haha.
When I first got my Moto X it worked just fine but recently I tried sending pictures to friends who also have T-Mobile and they all say that they can't see the picture because it says it is "too big", so along the same lines as the problem that you're having.
I going to call T-Mobile tomorrow and see if its maybe something on their side because when I check the details of the picture/message I sent, the size of the picture is under 1000KB (1000KB = 1MB which is the limit for sending MMS through T-Mobile, anything over 1MB gets stopped on their network).
Quick update:
I called T-Mobile an a representative told me that there were two ways of sending an MMS, specifically a picture, with the Moto X:
1. Stock Messaging App > Thread > Attach(Paper Clip icon) > Pictures. Then you select a picture from your gallery
2. Stock Messaging App > Thread > Attach(Paper Clip icon) > Capture Picture.
With the representative on the line, we tried both ways and figured out that option 1. works while 2. does not.
The conclusion that we came to is that if you capture a picture immediately, then it takes a full size picture and DOES NOT re-size it for MMS at all. HOWEVER, if you take a picture beforehand and then add it to a message from the gallery, it DOES re-size it.
I plan to call Motorola tomorrow and tell them about this issue so that hopefully they can either send out a fix or add it to an overall OTA update.
Hopefully I can contribute something to this forum haha

Same issue here. I am using the stock messaging app. I am on Verizon and am having trouble sending to T-Mobile. Haven't tried to other Verizon phones yet. I tried it over hangouts and had no issues, but then again Hangouts is using wifi.. Please let me know if you guys figure this one out!

Eh, I've tried that and GO sms app and multiple other ones back when I had a Samsung Mesmerize. Maybe that's why I grew favor to the stock AOSP app compared to the Samsung and other third party apps. O well.
Quick troubleshooting update: Ever since we got the update to Kit Kat and the introduction of using Hangouts to SMS, I've stayed with the stock app instead of Hangouts just because I like it better. However, I will switch to Hangouts just to see if I can send pictures successfully through that. Crossing my fingers this will work and will report back if anything improves
P.S. sorry for the long absence; I've been busy with school and haven't had time to post
Hey guys, I have come back baring good things.
So I've been using Hangouts for a couple of days and MMS and picture messaging works. I can send a picture to any T-Mobile number and they can download it and view it .
The only problem that I have experienced is that sometimes I get double-texts from a friend (but that can just be due to a faulty BlackBerry ;P).
Looks like Hangouts is the way to go for now

I've read the same issue in another thread. and the 2 fixes you mentioned came up:
1. people saying using hangouts fixes the issue
2. People saying attaching to MMS works and capturing a photo doesn't.
It's a bug with the Kit-Kat AOSP messaging apk. Other phones have this issue as well. I'm assuming that Google removed the picture compression code in an effort to get people to use Hangouts for SMS/MMS as Hangouts will compress down the pic w/o notifying you.

same issue in Hangouts running the pre-installed and latest version. Also you need evidence to back that up if it's really a known bug and not a rumor.

Just a quick update:
I've been using Hangouts for a quite a while now and have not had a problem since. I have nothing against Hangouts but I would like to have a dedicated MMS/SMS application because I don't really want Hangouts to be checking for messages ever so often.
I have unlimited MMS/SMS and no unlimited data anyways
