GSM ROM on Verizon CDMA Galaxy TAB - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just purchased Verizon Galaxy TAB CDMA.
I am planning to use it in Wifi only mode and am not planning to subscribe to Verizon service.
Questions: Can I install GSM or Sprint CDMA ROMS or I should look for Verizon CDMA ROMS only? Can anyone recommend one?

Can someone reply please? I don't see this asnwered.

As far as I know it is possible. You just need to compile a special kernel, which I have no knowledge on how to do. Search the forumz. I know that there is information on how to instal a gsm rom on a verizon tab. Maybe that guy can help you.
Hit the thanks button if I have helped.

First things first, have a little patience when asking questions, this forum isn't nearly as active as some of the others, and questions don't get immediately answered.
Second, you *WILL* brick your device if you install a GSM kernel on your CDMA device. The kernel is what supports the ROM and talks directly to your hardware. Obviously, the hardware on a CDMA device varies from a GSM device. If a kernel can be compiled to interact properly with an already built GSM ROM, than yes, in theory it does work (as can be seen with the Honeycomb port. The ROM port is built for CDMA, and a kernel was built to interact with that and the GSM device properly)

Whats the right rom for me?

So I don't know anything really about what rom is right for me. I have a htc diamond cdma version for the us my carrier is alltel. If I could get some help with this that would be great. Also from what little I understand installing a new rom would wipe my memory? would it also wipe important things that I need to use my phone on my network? Thank you for the help.

Droid ROMs on the Milestone - Possible?

What is the limitations of us porting ROMs from the Droid to the Milestone? Based on my research, both platforms are the same and the hardware is either identical or silimar (but 99% matching, with the exception of the Droid's CDMA radio).
I'd really like to see CyanogenMod on the Milestone, I think it would be a great ROM to have a play with. I just wanted to ask you guys and girls about it, before I run off and blow things up.
Please, no n00b comments. I know the Milestone and Droid are different (Milestone has a 600Mhz CPU and the Droid has a 550Mhz CPU?) and they both are GSM and CDMA respectively, but yeah.
Cheers,
Coburn.
You're right, they are extremely similar devices. The primary reason why this isn't possible is due to the locked bootloader - various checks are in place to make sure that the phone will only boot a kernel specifically built for the Milestone by Motorola.
Attempting to flash any Droid rom will result in a device that won't boot - you'll have to flash it with a stock sbf or with a nandroid backup, if your recovery still works.
A small correction, both the Droid and Milestone have identical CPUs. They're both 600MHz Cortex A8's, underclocked to 550MHz.
Yes, it will be possible when OUR bootloader will be unlocked. Works around KEXEC gave to us hope

im still a nub when it comes to this moto stuff - how is the milestone bootloader being locked different to the dext?
Weird, u said its an A8 processor but an app I have called OSmonitor states that it an ARMV7, unless their just the same...

ARM is the instruction set (What the CPU says)
Cortex A8 is the model number (What the CPU is)
The Milestone is dumb. It's a brilliant phone, but dumb.
A bad headphone jack, crippling lack of an unlocked bootloader, and silly reboots/wake up problems prohibit it from being epic.
Everything else is amazing.
Thats not so correctly !
In Europe is that not possible because its the different between GSM and CDMA !!
The Droid have CDMA and the Milestone in Europe have GSM ! Iam loocking for the develop Bootloader to flash other Roms on Milestone !!
When everybody have a idea or the answer ....pleas send me an PN !!
My friend is writing his new Programm its called recalc !! News comming soon .....

i've pm you the link with the developer bootloader.
best regards
(no n00b comment mode) all discussions about locking/unlocking of milestone - must be only after you read info from this site http://and-developers.com/motorola_milestone
Enjoy!
P.S. developer bootloader (mbm v.90.80 dont let for you run unsigned kernel. seriously.) and if you try flash it - you can just brick your phone. You warned.

[Q] Rooting Questions

I am looking at rooting my phone. I have a few questions but I'm not sure where to post at because I'm new on this site. I read through some root instructions, but the creators were not specific on some areas.
Does it matter what carrier I have if I root my HTC Hero as long as it is CDMA? I have Alltel. The instructions I read for this were not specific as to carriers, they just said CDMA HTC Hero.
My other question is when you root your HTC Hero, is flashing a new ROM to the phone part of the rooting process or something different. The instructions I read also did not clarify this.
Thanks
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
I don't know whether the carrier matters or not when rooting. You don't have to flash a ROM when rooting, but I would venture to say the the vast majority of folks are rooting to add a custom ROM. Especially with the Hero, due to it's limitations.
Edit: I found this post here. So I would research that a bit as far as carriers.
If you want to stay stock but remove bloatware, you can just root and remove with an app like root explorer. I would think about at least an overclocked kernel.

i know there are people on here who rooted from Alltel, the only thing is the majority of people have sprint.. so most of the custom stuff will come with sprints banner on it.. there are ways to change them and none of it is too hard at all to do.. its not a bad idea to try out some custom roms even if they are just custom versions of the stock rom..
i would check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=674788 it gives a break down of everything you will need to know both with the site itself as well as rooting your hero in general.. a good thing to keep in mind before posting a lot of questions is google is your friend, a search of the forum will bring up most answers to anything.. a lot of people around here get really ticked if you post questions that have already been answered, or if you post it in the wrong section.. but check out the link, any other questions feel free to ask..
I found this blog on rooting. It doesn't say anything about carrier. Does anyone know? It just says CDMA, which is what my phone is.

you can root being alltel, rooting in general is not carrier specific.. if you flash certain roms it may change your provider banner to sprint because it is the most common, but even that can be changed back and it doesnt affect your radio or prl.. if its a CDMA hero the CDMA root process should work..
read the post that posted above yours, and check out the link.. literally tons of information about rooting..
check my hero rooting guide, it is NOT carrier specific and will work on Alltell. fast and simple way to root.

New with Tab

Hi, I am new with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7'' 3G+Wifi, with 2.3.3. What do you recommend to me: keep this one, Overcome, or Honeycomb alpha. Please, anyone knows what is the different between CDMA and GSM ROMs? Thanks!

welcome to the hood brother in tab ..
your 1st welcome will be . pls post any thread endup with "?" "Q" in the Q|A section and do not post anything in the DEV section only if you plan to create ROM , Kernel
Welcome aboard.
Also state what carrier you have.
GSM is ATT TMOUS
Sprint, Veriz , Boost are CDMA
I love the Overcome rom, works well for what I want.
Thanks for the answers. My carrier is Orange, from Spain, but I don't know if it helps. I would like to flash Overcome but I don't know how begin. I have experience with Nexus One and Hero, but this seems very different.
Overcome is pretty stable compared to honeycomb. Try it first!

GSM phones use sim cards, CDMA need to be activated on the network and can't be transferred to another carrier easily if at all.
Don't know much about the CDMA as Australia got rid of CDMA a few years ago now...
GSM tabs have a larger choice of roms and kernals to try while the CDMA brothers and sister seem fairly restricted in what they can flash. They, however seem to be ahead when it comes to flashing Honeycomb...
ATM Honeycomb is an Alpha buiild, VERY buggy and not really usable if you need your tab in real life, Gingerbread on the other hand has been fairly stable for a while now. Up to you what you want to put on but before you do, READ the instructions on using ODIN or Heimdall, there are guides here.
Check if you're bootloaders are locked here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=888071 Before flashing
and make sure you take it slow, step by step and DON'T skip ahead when flashing.
Happy hunting for that perfect rom ( please don't ask what people think as Its really a personal choice and the threads have more than enough info for you to make a choice).
Cheers...

There´s no custom rums for P1010 at the moment, you can´t use GSM or CDMA, beacuse the hardware is very diferent.
A clockworkmod project in is progress for P1010 check it in developers section.
Thats to bad.
Hi guys, I followed a link to the wrong firmware for a P1000 tablet and bricked my GT-P1010 (wifi only). Right now I am sitting on a device that does not even come up to the recovery icon (Yellow triangle). Any ideas how to proceed from there besides sending back to samsung? I purchased the unit in May so it is still under warranty but I have to jump through a lot of hoops to send it back. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The device does not get recognized by a computer at all so I am stuck.

If you can't even get into download mode, you'll have to get the device jtagged.
