Hey guys, I just increased my overall signal for my htc incredible S to 79dBm.
Now i have 4 bars instead of 2 .
Fix is easy:
You need a strip of foil, scissors and tape.
Now my palm doesn't decrease signal anymore.
I'm just wondering what i can use instead of foil, which one has less resistance.
I know gold and silver does, but hey those are way too expensive .
After getting enough responses, i will rewrite this and add [TUTORIAL] line.

UPDATED:
I'm using latest radio now, signal still low without attached cover modification, but with it I get significant signal increase.
I post step by step tutorial later! Stay tuned guys.
Is it possible to use this solution for WiFi problems as well?
If you could elaborate on what you actually did?
And what was the problem you had that prompted this?
i don't seem to be having any problem with reception atm...
Since the GB update, which I installed yesterday, I keep loosing my WiFi signal. Before the update I had a good reception. But when I hold the mobile now, the signal drops and then the icon of WiFi disappears.
Also the gsm reception seems to be worse then before.
I'm going to try the solution above and see if it helps.

I brought antenna up from palm location (Otherwise signal decreased dramatically), I'm just thinking what material have better +dBm, Getting +10dBm would be awesome .
Why i made this topic was comparison with my and my friend's phone. He have Nokia Xpressmusic, i have Inc S, and he had 5 of 5, i had 1 out of 4 atm. I try to find out material resistances. Copper wire or alu must be OK.
Gotta go to football match, See ya later!

Already tried that. Very bad reception. Keep losing signal. Doesn't reconnect
Looks like it has some kind of deathgrip.

Try without holding your palm on cover, still poor signal?
And how many metres is your router away, is this forced with 100% output power?`
Try with other devices, if still persists then this may be caused from corrupted Radio.
Hope I helped.

It's quite a distances to the router.
Is there a possibility to reflash the phone?
Death grip here too. Would appreciate a solution.
Select settings: wireless & networks: mobile networks: gsm and wcdma.
Next select settings: about phone: network.
Hold in hand and see connection drop to 0asu eventually.

The GB update seems to have raised the "signal strength minimum value", so that it shuts down wi-fi at a higher signal strength than on 2.2.
it seems to be part of android 2.3
This should explain why when I tested Incredible S (with 2.2) and the Desire S (with 2.3) side by side, the Desire S dropped the wifi connection while the incredible S held the connection. (I was testing on a network with very poor signal)
Now, as it too got 2.3 - it seems the Incredible S has gotten as "bad" as the desire s.......
I hope many people report this to HTC. I did.

PLease tell me if it helped.
It looks like the reception is better in the house. So yes it works.
In my bedroom I went from 2 bars to 3 bars.
Could any of you who have the wi-fi issue try this with a different router?
It is possible the router may be faulty, or as already pointed out, the distance may be over what the router covers.
if not, this seems to be quite an issue which will need to be looked into
Ok, I´ve done a hard reset and it seems to be improved.
WiFi signal switches from fair to good and back. So I´m fine with it.

No no, before the update, I had connection in my bed. After update - same location - wifi disconnects. Signal strenght seems the same.
It's not the router.....
Guys, we have the same problem with the Desire S (chech the forums) after the 2.3.3 update. It's very likely software related (phone dropping the connect after it's under certain signal value ... viva la HTC update).
Check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061502&page=3
I tried it but it doesn't seem to affect my signal strengt. Signal still changes between 51 dBm and 88 dBm.

Have you put the slider to best performance rather than best battery?
Yes i did
never had the problem with the tytn and wizard.
I only get that on my TyTN II when I'm far away from the router and the signal strength is low. If you've already set the performance vs battery life slider to give maximum performance as suggested by kareem9nba and it's still behaving as reported, what happens when you're near to the router?
If it's just that your saying the range isn't as good as youve been used to with other devices, I have nothing to compare my TyTN II with as this is my first WiFi capable ppc - but I'm sure other more experienced members here will be able to comment. If you're near to the router where there's no doubt it should be working fine and still getting problems then thats a different matter.
maybe your router needs a restart or maybe its just faulty.
have you tried other devices with same router?
try a wifi sniffer/scanner see what happens (a good example would be PeekPocket)

I do! My Kaiser's performance is on a par with my old HTC Universal, which is to say, they are both terrible at getting a signal. I don't think my Kaiser is faulty as back in the Universal forums, it was often commented how useless the WiFi was in comparison to other machines. I used to have a HP Ipaq 5450 which could get a signal upto approx 20m from my router, my laptop starts struggling at around 50m. The Universal could just about get a signal upto 4m away, the Kaiser is no better.
I realise much of this is due router location and the fact that I was trying to get WiFi in my garage, but in my bedroom with a full signal on the laptop, the HTC devices struggle to get more than 1 bar and if I move 10cm further away from the router the signal goes completely.
I think the WiFi on the Universal and the Kaiser just isn't that powerful. I guess it's Maximum Performance setting is still quite low power in order to save battery life. Wonder if there is a registry tweek to increase the power to the WiFi card, and if doing that would blow the card?!

I'm using an 11 Mbps Wifi capable router (about 2003 vintage) and even with a wall and a floor between my TyTN II and the router it still works about 15 m away, I've yet to try any further as that'd be outside the house. I was impressed to see it even detected other WiFi sources in the area though. I found that even though the signal quality bar was fluctuating, my web browsing still worked OK. Bumping the slider towards the performance end did make a difference to the signal quality indicator (although it still fluctuated). If your TyTN II is only working up to 4 m from your router then I think there's a fault with either device, you should be getting better than that.
I can connect to my linksys WRT54G when beside the it and 20mt away. Even when beside it the TynII will cycle off (disconnect) and then reconnect again. I thought it was signal strength but I am beginning to think its just a crappy wifi setup on the tyn. I also have my slider on best performance.

Funny that, so am I! However I bought it because it was cheap and I really didn't know much about WiFi etc several years ago when I bought it. I notice many routers come with external antenna's, mine is all internal so I would think that it's more my router isn't that powerful, combined with the Kaiser having a less powerful WiFi set-up that older models. To be fair, the Ipaq had an external antenna (of sorts, a little lump on top) and my previous laptops didn't have built in WiFi, their external WiFi adaptors also had external antenna's.
Frankly I think that all this internalisation of components is having a negative impact on signal strength and range. To compare I have a GSM car kit with an external antenna that picks up a much better signal than a phone on it's own. Likewise my GPS can be connected to an external antenna and I've noticed when connected it will pick up more satalites, with a stronger lock, than when on it's built in antenna. It also picks up more than the Kaiser (internal antenna) or Universal (external bluetooth GPS with internal antenna) ever do.
Still, it all just about works for my needs, so I'm going to leave well alone!

But does this actually affect your browsing? In the end the signal quality bar can do whatever it wants as long as the data still gets through as far as I'm concerned and for me that’s happening. My hunch is that the reason why the signal quality bar intermittently dips down (even when nearby a router) is associated with power management on the TyTN II (which will still be in place to a certain degree even when the performance vs. battery life slider is fully at the performance end).

really i can't connect to my wifi router, while other hardware can (a laptop for example). it loops from "connecting" to "available" with 5 bars. but nevers connect or never shows an error. i tried open, WEP, WPA, WPA2 with no results... its a compatibility problem of TYTN II with some routers....
i hope that upgrading firmware, this problem dissapear....
Hi
My experience isn't that the signal itself is particlarly poor, but that it can be prone to loose connection regularly if its very weak. Atm I'm sitting some 150m from the accesspoint (quite powerfull transmitter), through a couple of concrete walls and its fast, as in almost so fast as the Kaiser can chew. Livestreaming from Youtube is np etc. The signal is no doubt very poor tho, and I have to use max signal/minimum battery on that bar you can adjust.
What drives me nuts is that it DCs me and often force me to key in the network key randomly every 1 to 20mins or so. I don't know if this is due to weak signal (both my laptop and the kaiser have 1 bar) or config of the wlan/kaiser. The PC dont DC, but its deffo a cranky connection. It almost seems like theres some auto-DC feature somewhere.
On other networks I haven't seen this. Generally I find the Kaiser wlan surprisingly powerfull, albeit it often shows a weak signal I've found this to be very relative and far from always descriptive of real life performance.
/Mac
kaiser wifi low signal - wi fi poor reception - wifi disconnecting and reconnecting:
Suffered a lot with my kaiser wifi poor reception. Tested several radio versions and could solve the problem.
Radio version:
1 71 09 01 - too low WIFI reception
1.27.12.11 - disconnecting and turning OFF the WIFI with no automatic reengage of the access point or turning ON the WIFI if coverage is good.
1.65.17.56 is the versione that SOLVED my problem.
This radio was collected from the original HTC shipped rom:
RUU_Kaiser_HTC_WWE_3.28.405.0_radio_sign_25.83.40.02_1.65.17.56_Ship.exe
In this moment I am running Radio 1.65.17.56 with
ROM jjblaster3 - updated 28014 with good WIFI behaviour.
I need to underline that the reception I have now with the Kaiser, can never reach the sensibility of my Nokia 5530 WIFI or the one I have on my laptop with good antenna embeded in my LCD framem but I am happy now because the WIFI is making sense now.
Best Regards

I'm facing the same problem. WiFi worked fine and one day it was suddenly gone. Tried quite a few radios, including 1.65.17.56 and still no deal.
To elaborate, when WiFi is turned on, the icon never even comes up in the taskbar, and it continues to remain in an off state (when checked in wifi settings) even when it's turned on (in the comm manager).
I'm guessing this could be a hardware problem like a loose contact to the antenna? Anyone heard of such issues?
(On a side note, the phone function never worked either, I always got a "No Service")
I've fixed it! I believe the problem was indeed a loose antenna. I opened up my phone and removed the antenna peice (the plastic plate that also houses the speaker) and pushed up the two pins left of the camera (so that they'll have better contact with the antenna piece. Put everything back and now the WiFi works!
Now if only I can figure out why the cellular doesn't work..
My N1 used to be able to get a decent signal everywhere in the house but of late it's struggling to even detect and maintain a solid connection with the wireless in the next room to the router.
I've got a laptop and iPhone in here and all of them have full bars except the N1, which keeps switching from data to wireless and back and can't maintain the connection consistently.
Any ideas on why?
Does it have to do anything with the radio/kernel?
Anyone?
I'm thinking of changing the kernel, would that help?

Try this first.
Tell the phone to forget the network, restart your router and see if reconnecting takes care of it. My notebook used to have this issue so it's worth a shot.
If that doesn't help, then you might look into a different ROM/Kernel or make sure that it's not a hardware fault with the N1 itself.
Could it be due to an OTA update that changed the radio?
The same happens to me, And it gets to a stage that it totally disconnects from wifi. It's really getting ln my nerves as we even got a booster and it doesn't help :?

i second that. though i don't own N1, my Desire was getting full signal last year, recently i am getting very low signal as well. other devices get full signal as usual. so probably there was some update messing up.
i'll keep on searching if someone has better info to resolve.
Radio doesn't have anything to do with WiFi. Kernel does.
i'm having the same problem...has anyone found a fix?
The problem's extended significantly. Bluetooth headset usage stutters profusely, even when I'm right next to the device.
I'm pretty sure the Wi-Fi issue has nothing to do with my router, since my Desire has full signal in the same place my N1 has one bar and is struggling to get a connection.
Changed kernels, ROMs, radios, flashed engineering SPL (I know that doesn't help, however) and even a stock EPE54B ROM. No results.

It helps I think.
My understanding is that this is the level when the phone decides that wifi is too weak and it should switch to a data signal.
I don’t suffer from range issues – the SP has as good, if not better range than all the other wireless devices in my house. However connecting in the first place can be a right pain.
I had an xperia ray before and it also did what I’m about to describe (but connected more reliably) – in essence when wifi is ‘connecting’ the signal strength will go from excellent/good/fair to poor or even nothing. It fails to connect and I’m told there’s an authentication issue.
This tells me that either my router reduces its wifi signal, or my phone is less able to receive the signal during this stage. As my router is old (6/7 years), I’m inclined to think it’s the router – Sony probably test their devices on more recent hardware.
With these things in mind what this tweak does, is hold on to the wifi signal for longer before switching to a data connection, making connecting to wifi more likely.
In my case after applying this hack the signal still drops whilst ‘connecting/authenticating’ but connects more frequently, and the signal goes back up again once connection is made.
I must also say that wifi problems are not unique to Sony devices and having had a look elsewhere for a solution I discovered that many other phones, from a variety of manufacturers, have similar issues. One of the big US Universities even wrote reports about how the Android OS was at fault for overloading their wireless network with repeated DHCP requests.
Anyway before you apply the tweak try enabling ‘auto IP support’ in advanced wireless settings. Similarly it doesn’t make sense to have ‘avoid poor connections’ enabled.
It does work for me

Thanks for the answers. I have been testing this fix and i can say it works for me. Where i had 1 weak signal now i have 2 or 1 but a steady one. Now i can move in my house without losing WiFi.
Remember that you can change -100 and test it with more (-300) but I supouse the battery will last less. Otherwise you can change to -90 or -95 if you think WiFi its enough good.
Very good. Saw significant improvement in the areas of the house that I had a problem with the connection before. C5303 on 12.0.A.1.257.
Thanks
On the stock 4.1.1 rom i could reach wifi from my modem at about 60 feet or even more. I could stand at the farthest point in my house and still get 2 out of 4 bars on wifi. I loaded slimkat and although it was a good rom it lagged to much, and now im on the latest cm11 nightly, but both roms gave poor wifi performance, i could barely reach it from 20 feet. It would connect but i couldn't really use the internet cause the signal was so bad.
Anyone else have this problem? I have a 2wire modem if anyone is wondering.

bump
I have been having issues with Wi-Fi, but it's my provider fault. So no, no issues so far. I'm on a Carbon ROM nightly. BTW, you don't need to "bump".
What frequency does your router use? 2.4 or 5 ghz? And how many walls is it going through? Mine uses both and I get good reception up till my fence line, about 40ft away from the router behind a brick wall and some windows, using 2.4 whereas 5 will barely make it out of the house. I have a Western Digital router, not sure of the model number, but it was a cheapo from Walmart.
That said, wifi has been strange with custom roms on 4.4 with some people. For some of us it seems to be just fine where others have poor or no signal. The following is speculation based on what I've noticed lately --- Makes me wonder if some phones have revision B of the wifi chip when development team is using A, or something like that. The RAZR HD was having similar issues caused by different chipset revisions when KitKat first came out and maybe we're having the same. --- End speculation.

I understand there maybe many factors why the signal is weak, but its the fact that after i changed the rom the reception became worse.
Im using a 2.4 GHz i think. Mine has to go through a floor because its in the basment and from the floor goes through 2 walls to get to my room where before i flashed kit kat i got 2 bars just fine and could use the internet and now it doesn't even get signal. Before flashing kit kat i could get 2 bars in my sisters room (floor and around 3 walls and furniture around 50 feet away). Its a big house so...but its never been this bad even with my old phone! which is an lg optimus one.
after doing extensive research on the kit kat update, turns out this is a location services/wifi chip conflict and this pretty much renders the wifi chip useless. so unless your router is strong (and mine isnt) you wont get good wifi connection anywhere.
One way to sort of fix it is to do the following.
1. Go to Settings>Location Services> Device only (basically so it would not use the wifi and this would free up some bandwidth for your phone).
2. Go to Settings>Wifi>Advanced>Turn the Eco mode/ Battery saver mode OFF
This will increase performance of the wifi chip and stop google from using up your wifi to track you (lol)
This also seems to drastically increase battery performance, I loose about 1 percent every 5 minutes with screen off. Right now i am at 78% and not going down at all while my screen is on. So...i guess the battery saver thing drains battery??? (idk maybe a cm bug).
Hope this helps anyone who has this problem on kit kat. By the way turning off location services does 2 bad things, renders certain apps useless and 2, does not help wifi (idk why).
EDIT
Its been around 10 minutes and battery isn't going down

I don't see the Eco Mode, maybe is just a feature of the ROM you are using? I see Wi-Fi optimization (minimize battery usage when Wi-Fi is on), is that it?
Yea that is the one he is referring to. Btw, I personally don't have WiFi issues on my roms, go back to stock if you get a chance and see if the wifi is still failing, it may just be that 2-Wire.

after doing extensive research on the kit kat update, turns out this is a location services/wifi chip conflict and this pretty much renders the wifi chip useless. so unless your router is strong (and mine isnt) you wont get good wifi connection anywhere.

Hmmm. I'm already doing #1, haven't bothered taking a #2, I mean trying #2 ever....My wifi is set to go on and off with the screen and I only connect to trusted networks, for me, there never has been reason to use #1 between paranoia and wanting to save battery life.
Good finds, it'll be worth watching logs when those settings are enable/disabled to see if any errors pop up.

Yes i did go back to stock to check if it was the phone or the rom. It is the kit kat os...many other devices are reporting this problem.
Also noticed a CM bug, the camera has a hard time saving video over 10 seconds long and also the google play music app reboots the device for some reason...anyone else with this?
For now i am getting close to usual wifi after changing my settings around although it is still only 60-70% as strong as it should be :/

I flashed the pa moto ROM and with the WiFi, I had great signal, it just would not connect. To any router at all. It would sit at saved and never attempt to connect.

sometimes i get that too on CM. It wont connect to wifi till i literally come right up to the modem, otherwise if im walking around the house it wont even see the signal (if im moving around). I have to stop, stand there for like 2 minutes till it finds the signal. Usually if its 1-2 bars of wifi it wont even bother to try to connect.
This is a huge kit kat bug.
I always have had problems with WiFi, even on stock (because of a 3rd world internet provider).. But I can't download anything con google play... I download at 10kbps per second, but downloading from other apps or browser Its decent like 2-3mb/s. How can I fix this?

now that i dont know.
My problem isn't internet speed. Even here in the USA i get 70kbps internet because to get anything more than that i need to pay 2 or 3 times more and i already pay 30 bucks a month for 70kb. But the problem is the signal, i cant get signal in my bedroom on kit kat rom, but i can on stock.
your problem? i really dont know, try clearing data on the play store, rebooting the phone and trying again. its probably a play store issue
Yeah.. I hope we could get a decent wifi reception on kk. And I already done that, Should I flash other gapps?

I flashed the Pac Man 4.4.2 ROM on my kids Atrix HD, and that was the first thing I noticed. I was doing the work at my desk, which is located about 5' (with a typical wall in between) from my AT&T (Motorola) wireless router. Prior to that; I got full bars on the Wi-Fi signal strength meter anywhere within a 50-60-' radius. After I did the upgrade from Pac Man 4.3; sitting at my desk, 5' away from the router; I was only getting 3 bars - which - still works, but is a significant degradation in Wi-Fi performance. Sitting at the same desk, or anywhere on my property with either my Samsung S4 or Note 3, I have full bars, and full speed. Both of my Sammy's are running the stock AT&T KK update, unrooted - but living for the day that an exploit becomes available.
In fact; when I turn the corner onto my street (my house is the second house) my Sammy's connect to my router before I reach my driveway. Now, bear in mind; I have the power of my router turned up to a full 10. The router is located inside my bedroom closet near the ceiling, with no external antennas. I have it bridged to a dual band D-Link router for 5GHz with the 2GHz disabled. I carefully used a spectrum analyzer / logger to sweep the area for the best channels, as well. All that being said; I don't think much of that is relevant to the decreased Wi-Fi- performance of the Atrix HD, since it worked similarly to the Sammy's before the 4.4.2 bump.

I'm also on at&t except with a 2wire router. I had to move the router around to get slightly better signal. But still. I would sit in my friends house and I could use his parents houses WiFi (on the same property) and get 2 bars. Now its none.

I had a 2Wire until last summer and it was a pretty decent router with decent coverage. I modified it by adding two external antennas and only made a slight difference. that was before rooting, tweaking, etc. The Motorola router is much better with respect to signal coverage - without any modifications.
The issue that I'm having, now is that I'm experiencing significantly less Wi Fi performance with the Atrix HD after I did the operating system upgrade. The other two stock phones are still working as well, or better than expected after the 4.4.2 update.

I'm curious how your wifi is performing because i'm getting pretty bad wifi reception and starting to think it's maybe a hardware fault.
On my old phone (One X) i'm getting full bars and a link speed of 72Mbps allmost everywhere in my livingroom.
On the One mini i have never had 72Mbps (max 54 and mostly 26 or lower) and frequently loose wifi connection in my house where the One X easally maintains a strong connection.
The same is with the bleutooth connection. When streaming music I only have to touch the top of the right corner and things start to stutter.
What is your experience? Please let me know so I know if i have to send it for repair.

It does sound bit strange. have you tried going into advance setting and put wifi optimization on?

Thanks for responding. I have tried that and it didn't seem te make a differnce.
What kind of link speeds are you getting?
You can check that by tapping on your wifi SSID when you are connected.
Thanks!
According to my phone, 65Mbps
