On the stock 4.1.1 rom i could reach wifi from my modem at about 60 feet or even more. I could stand at the farthest point in my house and still get 2 out of 4 bars on wifi. I loaded slimkat and although it was a good rom it lagged to much, and now im on the latest cm11 nightly, but both roms gave poor wifi performance, i could barely reach it from 20 feet. It would connect but i couldn't really use the internet cause the signal was so bad.
Anyone else have this problem? I have a 2wire modem if anyone is wondering.

bump
I have been having issues with Wi-Fi, but it's my provider fault. So no, no issues so far. I'm on a Carbon ROM nightly. BTW, you don't need to "bump".
What frequency does your router use? 2.4 or 5 ghz? And how many walls is it going through? Mine uses both and I get good reception up till my fence line, about 40ft away from the router behind a brick wall and some windows, using 2.4 whereas 5 will barely make it out of the house. I have a Western Digital router, not sure of the model number, but it was a cheapo from Walmart.
That said, wifi has been strange with custom roms on 4.4 with some people. For some of us it seems to be just fine where others have poor or no signal. The following is speculation based on what I've noticed lately --- Makes me wonder if some phones have revision B of the wifi chip when development team is using A, or something like that. The RAZR HD was having similar issues caused by different chipset revisions when KitKat first came out and maybe we're having the same. --- End speculation.

I understand there maybe many factors why the signal is weak, but its the fact that after i changed the rom the reception became worse.
Im using a 2.4 GHz i think. Mine has to go through a floor because its in the basment and from the floor goes through 2 walls to get to my room where before i flashed kit kat i got 2 bars just fine and could use the internet and now it doesn't even get signal. Before flashing kit kat i could get 2 bars in my sisters room (floor and around 3 walls and furniture around 50 feet away). Its a big house so...but its never been this bad even with my old phone! which is an lg optimus one.
after doing extensive research on the kit kat update, turns out this is a location services/wifi chip conflict and this pretty much renders the wifi chip useless. so unless your router is strong (and mine isnt) you wont get good wifi connection anywhere.
One way to sort of fix it is to do the following.
1. Go to Settings>Location Services> Device only (basically so it would not use the wifi and this would free up some bandwidth for your phone).
2. Go to Settings>Wifi>Advanced>Turn the Eco mode/ Battery saver mode OFF
This will increase performance of the wifi chip and stop google from using up your wifi to track you (lol)
This also seems to drastically increase battery performance, I loose about 1 percent every 5 minutes with screen off. Right now i am at 78% and not going down at all while my screen is on. So...i guess the battery saver thing drains battery??? (idk maybe a cm bug).
Hope this helps anyone who has this problem on kit kat. By the way turning off location services does 2 bad things, renders certain apps useless and 2, does not help wifi (idk why).
EDIT
Its been around 10 minutes and battery isn't going down

I don't see the Eco Mode, maybe is just a feature of the ROM you are using? I see Wi-Fi optimization (minimize battery usage when Wi-Fi is on), is that it?
Yea that is the one he is referring to. Btw, I personally don't have WiFi issues on my roms, go back to stock if you get a chance and see if the wifi is still failing, it may just be that 2-Wire.

Hmmm. I'm already doing #1, haven't bothered taking a #2, I mean trying #2 ever....My wifi is set to go on and off with the screen and I only connect to trusted networks, for me, there never has been reason to use #1 between paranoia and wanting to save battery life.
Good finds, it'll be worth watching logs when those settings are enable/disabled to see if any errors pop up.

Yes i did go back to stock to check if it was the phone or the rom. It is the kit kat os...many other devices are reporting this problem.
Also noticed a CM bug, the camera has a hard time saving video over 10 seconds long and also the google play music app reboots the device for some reason...anyone else with this?
For now i am getting close to usual wifi after changing my settings around although it is still only 60-70% as strong as it should be :/

sometimes i get that too on CM. It wont connect to wifi till i literally come right up to the modem, otherwise if im walking around the house it wont even see the signal (if im moving around). I have to stop, stand there for like 2 minutes till it finds the signal. Usually if its 1-2 bars of wifi it wont even bother to try to connect.
This is a huge kit kat bug.
I always have had problems with WiFi, even on stock (because of a 3rd world internet provider).. But I can't download anything con google play... I download at 10kbps per second, but downloading from other apps or browser Its decent like 2-3mb/s. How can I fix this?

now that i dont know.
My problem isn't internet speed. Even here in the USA i get 70kbps internet because to get anything more than that i need to pay 2 or 3 times more and i already pay 30 bucks a month for 70kb. But the problem is the signal, i cant get signal in my bedroom on kit kat rom, but i can on stock.
your problem? i really dont know, try clearing data on the play store, rebooting the phone and trying again. its probably a play store issue
Yeah.. I hope we could get a decent wifi reception on kk. And I already done that, Should I flash other gapps?

I flashed the Pac Man 4.4.2 ROM on my kids Atrix HD, and that was the first thing I noticed. I was doing the work at my desk, which is located about 5' (with a typical wall in between) from my AT&T (Motorola) wireless router. Prior to that; I got full bars on the Wi-Fi signal strength meter anywhere within a 50-60-' radius. After I did the upgrade from Pac Man 4.3; sitting at my desk, 5' away from the router; I was only getting 3 bars - which - still works, but is a significant degradation in Wi-Fi performance. Sitting at the same desk, or anywhere on my property with either my Samsung S4 or Note 3, I have full bars, and full speed. Both of my Sammy's are running the stock AT&T KK update, unrooted - but living for the day that an exploit becomes available.
In fact; when I turn the corner onto my street (my house is the second house) my Sammy's connect to my router before I reach my driveway. Now, bear in mind; I have the power of my router turned up to a full 10. The router is located inside my bedroom closet near the ceiling, with no external antennas. I have it bridged to a dual band D-Link router for 5GHz with the 2GHz disabled. I carefully used a spectrum analyzer / logger to sweep the area for the best channels, as well. All that being said; I don't think much of that is relevant to the decreased Wi-Fi- performance of the Atrix HD, since it worked similarly to the Sammy's before the 4.4.2 bump.

I had a 2Wire until last summer and it was a pretty decent router with decent coverage. I modified it by adding two external antennas and only made a slight difference. that was before rooting, tweaking, etc. The Motorola router is much better with respect to signal coverage - without any modifications.
The issue that I'm having, now is that I'm experiencing significantly less Wi Fi performance with the Atrix HD after I did the operating system upgrade. The other two stock phones are still working as well, or better than expected after the 4.4.2 update.

Just wondering if anyone knows how many devices can be connected to the Galaxy S via wireless Mobile AP.
My home 3g router blew up and the replacement pocket wifi is pretty crap.
Currently I can get no more than 2 connections but read somewhere that as many as 5 could be. Maybe different software versions had different settings.
Any help is appreciated.
EDIT: SORTED. Had an older version of Docs rom 2.2.1 JPY running. Installed a newer JVQ 2.3.4 and was able to connect 5 devices. More than enough

I think I've gotten 3-4, but you need to realise the phone simply isn't designed to work as a dedicated router. The antenna is much smaller (so you'd need to be close by), and the ability to support multiple connections is very limited. Having more than a couple connections is going to cause all the connections to start lagging.

I agree its not meant to be used as a dedicated router, but it actually has many advantages.
I actually have 2 and selling 1 isn't going to get me much $ so I want to keep both. I also have no problems getting wifi reception from it as its located centrally in the house, plus the house is not that large. Speed is also excellent.
With the Virgin broadband home router I had for years, it was good but speed was not great (max 3mbps), it wasn't portable and generally lost connection a couple of times a day.
The replacement Virgin pocket wifi, had better speed but lost connection sometimes in under a minute. I had to reconnect it 7 times while trying to pay a bill over the internet even though I've set it to never disconnect. Once it stayed on for over a week but went downhill from there. I received another for free from my provider and same ****.
With the spare galaxy s, its faster than both - it got up to 6mbps and reception is poor at my house. Not once has it dropped network reception as its a phone, its always on power, and I have 3 spare batteries so if I want to take it away with me I can get days of usage without charge.
To me, nothing can beat that. Plus it also doubles as everything else (camera, navigator, tv-out, phone!!!!,etc).
It's a mobile hotspot with tons of advantages. Just got to figure out how to get a couple more connections.

My GT-I9070P seems to have weak wifi reception. Next to a laptop receiving 5 bars from a hotspot, my phone is only getting one or two bars from the same hotspot. In addition, many other SSIDs that my laptop see my phone does not. Is there any way to improve the wifi reception?
Well , I have no problems here , perhaps your WiFi hardware is defective ?
Might also be a software issue .

Your phone receiver is smaller than the one your notebook, so seeing difference in reception isn't a fair comparison because your notebook will always win.
The same about not seeing all ssids.
Nothing much to do about reception, but there are a couple of tweaks for networking posted on the forums.

Mine has issues too. I noticed it improved a little with custom rom JetMod But then I upgraded to JB stock with latest CoCore kernel and its back again to where it started.
I once found a website where it said that of you enter maintenance mode you can adjust the power saving mode of the wifi But when I tried That stock ROM wouldnt let me change the setting. I hope my experience is of any help.

I called Moto and after dealing with their terrible level 1 support I got the following:
HERE ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOING THE WIPE CACHE PARTITION:
This will remove any temporary files that may be causing the problem, but will not delete your files or settings.
1. With the phone powered off, press the VOL DOWN KEY for 2-3 seconds then POWER key then release.
2. The device will display different BOOT OPTIONS
3. Use the VOL DOWN Key to SCROLL to Recovery and VOL UP Key to select
Tip: If the device reboots, you may have waited to long to make a selection, you will need to begin the process again.
4. The device will display the Motorola logo and then the Android in distress ( logo with Exclamation mark)
5. Press and hold the VOL UP key for 10-15 seconds. While still holding the VOL UP key tap and release the POWER key
Tip: You can try this step, holding the phone in landscape. If you are stuck on step 6, try a force reboot by pressing the Power key and Vol Down key, and start the process again.
6. The device will display additional menu options (Text will appear in BLUE)
7. Use the VOL DOWN Key to scroll to wipe cache partition and the POWER Key to select this option
8. The device will then perform the partition wipe
9. The device will reboot and start the normal power up sequence
Ever since it hasn't had any problems, but it's only been a few hours as well.

The force to 2.4ghz actually made the problem occur a lot faster, any reason it might be due to the massive amount of wifi networks around? When I set to scan 5 ghz there was only one still open, I might go into my router and see if I can change the atenna settings.
EDIT: Turns out if I go to 5 ghz my computer can't connect, but I changed the channel to something less populated in the area to see if that helps.
DOUBLE EDIT: It appears to occur after I'm supposed to get a Facebook notification, at that point I don't get any more notifications....attempting to clear out facebook data and cache to see if that does anything

Hey guys I'm having a similar issue with my moto x on the 2.4ghz band. Speeds are very slow and sometimes cut out completely. Im getting a download speed of about 300kb/s on 2.4 both on auto channel and it doesn't rlly change once I change it manually to an open channel using WiFi analyzer app. My download speeds on 5ghz hit 4000kb/s even with a much lower signal strength.
YouTube and Netflix is unusable and growing the internet sucks. I usually just use the 4g network while at home cuz its a thousand times faster but I'd like this to be fixed regardless. Has anyone found a solution or explanation?

I'm having these issues too. Got the GSM Developer Edition on 11/29. It immediately updated to Kit Kat OTA so I'm not sure whether it had the issue prior to Kit Kat or not. This only happens on 2.4 ghz wifi and only with one of my routers at home, a Netgear WNDR3700v2 running OpenWrt Attitude Adjustment (I tried upgrading from Backfire to see if it would help, it did not). The other router is a Linksys WRT350N and when the phone is connected to that one the problem does not happen. Note, that there are 2 laptops, a Samsung Galaxy S2, and a Kindle Fire HDX that have zero problems with the WNDR3700. All can transfer data perfectly fine and at high speeds. Thus I do not think the router is bad. Have not checked work routers. 5 ghz wifi is totally fine and indeed very good with this phone.
For me, the problem is that the phone seems unable to receive data at high speed (over 1Mbps) on 2.4 ghz wifi in any area where the signal isn't perfect and sometimes even in the same room as the router (although usually it is fine there). Oddly in many cases when it has trouble receiving it can send data much faster. It almost seems like it might be some kind of interference as it is rather random.
At this point I'm wondering if the phone has a defective 2.4ghz subsystem, though that seem unlikely due to good transfer with the WRT350N, or if this is some kind of wifi tuning software bug in the phone.
Any info would be appreciated. Does anyone have this issue who did not have the issue on Jellybean? Am wondering if anything changed with wifi for the update? Note, I have tried clearing the cache in recovery as noted in another thread with no luck. Anyone have the WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini file from Jellybean for this phone? Would rather not reflash just for 1 file.
Thanks.

For what it's worth I have this same Netgear router and have had the same connectivity issues on both 4.2.2 and 4.4.
I did some reading today and found a couple possible fixes I plan on trying out. First one is to disable WMM. Secondly I found on the official netgear forums that they have had major issues (some of which you've described) with all firmwares ending in the .30s and went so far as to pull them from their download section.
My router was running firmware .36 and I successfully downgraded it to the latest stable firmware .12 that netgear now recommends.
Hopefully 1 of those 2 fixes improves the performance, at any rate I really think it's something with the router itself and not the moto x.

Thanks for letting me know this was also an issue on 4.2.2. Saves me the trouble of flashing back just to test.
I will be interested to know if your using official netgear 1.0.0.12 firmware fixes the issue for you. I haven't actually ever used the official firmware as I've run OpenWRT since I got the router a year or two ago. 10.03.1 had the issue, and it appears 12.09 does as well. I may try a trunk build at some point to see if that changes anything.
I had previously written that all was well on the 5 ghz band. This appears to not be 100% correct. Yesterday evening and this morning I found myself "connected" to the 5ghz band without actually having working internet. Toggle wifi on/off fixes it, but I shouldn't have to do it.
Not sure if this helps, but on the 2.4 ghz side things do work better on one side of the house vs the other. Also it seems that I can get a very fast connection at times and then it stumbles and gets stuck going under 1 Mbps. I still suspect either a defect or some kind of low level radio issues with the moto or the router regarding interference from neighboring wifi access points (there are a lot around me, single family houses on small lots). However, keep in mind no other device has these issues but the moto. In the rare instance I venture into a bad signal pocket the signal indicator goes down and speed slows or they lose connection vs the moto where it can show excellent signal and have no/nearly no connectivity.
I haven't tried it for long, but switching to wireless g mode vs ng may improve stability though I only briefly tried it. I did walk around part of my house checking the Mbps with the app "WiFi Speed Test" and while way slower than N mode it was far more stable. Even if this does work it is a definate downgrade in speed though.
Well its only been a day or two so it may be too early to tell, but so far my wifi seems much better after making those two fixes I mentioned above. This is on 2.4 band, the 5ghz band doesn't provide me enough signal strength to use all the time (router is too far from my bedroom).
The main issue I was having was my wifi signal would cut out even though it still showed a good connection. I could swipe down on the status bar and see no download arrow next to the wifi icon so I knew I wasn't receiving data. However a simple disconnect and reconnect to my wifi would fix the problem until it happened again. This seemed to be most common while watching YouTube videos, in fact it happened far too often which is why I went searching for a solution.
So as I mentioned things seem to be better for sure so far but I need to give it a week or so to see how much it is really helped, but so far I can't remember any wifi cutting out since I've made those two fixes.

Hey all,
Does anyone else notice that they get better battery life while on LTE/HSPA rather than on WiFi? I decided to leave my WiFi off yesterday to see how well the phone does while using the GSM radios. To my surprise, the GSM radios were more efficient. I also noticed that on the stock battery app there were way fewer instances of the phone being "awake". With 11hrs off the charger,1.5 hour of SOT, 45 minutes of music I had 73% battery left. To me this is solid battery life. With the same exact routine and WiFi on I have about 65% battery left. Not a huge difference but enough to where I don't feel the need to juice up during the day if I am going out at night. I'm doing the same thing today to see if it is an anomaly but so far it looks like it is the same as yesterday. Anyone else seeing this?
Variables:
Stock, unlocked, not rooted.
brightness set to 1/3
T-Mobile $30 plan.
This is in NYC which has great T-Mobile service, that being said the bars in the battery life menu are "yellow" indicating the signal is "ok"....mostly because the testing was done indoors.
Google Now enabled.
GPS set to battery savings
Scanning always available (in wifi settings) turned off.

I agree. I just turn off wifi, use LTE only.
But I have to turn on wifi when I download something or update, I have limited data plan :crying:
If I have unlimited data plan, I will completely turn off wifi
Same here today. All day with data (tmobile) and had wifi off. Was getting better SOT on data vs wifi.
Is there a way to enable/disable WIFI automatically based on location? through an app or native os function?
This probably had something to do with the n5 having only one main antennae for cellular connections. The phone isn't connected to LTE and gsm at the same time, just LTE and switches back to gsm when a call comes in. Therefore when only connected to a cellular network only one radio is on. In contrast with Wi-Fi on that is another radio consuming power. Someone correct me if this is incorrect.
I've noticed this recently but my situation is because when I was on wireless I was getting a lot of wlan_Rx_wake wakelocks. I obviously wasn't getting it when on LTE alone. I've managed find the issue on my network at home . now I have to figure out what the issue is on my hotspot. My phone has been sleeping like a bear in the winter now. I imagine a lot of people are probably getting a lot of these wakelocks. I wonder what makes this phone susceptible to it and not the other nexus devices.

Tasker does the same and it is way cheaper.

there's a wifi bug that is supposed to be fixed in the next update which is probably 4.4.1

10 bucks is ridiculous. I found Llama that does practically the same thing (if not identical). I've set it up to disable WIFI as soon as i leave "home" and enable it when i get to "work", as well as set up other actions (quite mode after midnight etc) within the profile.
and its free
rooted, ART, franco kernel , all LTE (Hong kong). light usage: facebook, chrome web browsing, whatsapp only. no games

If you're comparing lama to tasker specifically, llama does about 10% (being generous) of what tasker does. Although there's a lot of learning to be done.
I'd pay 100 Bucks for tasker

Well the nexus5 utilises envelope tracking when ring on LTE. Maybe it's doing its job... http://androidcommunity.com/nexus-5-getting-battery-boost-from-qualcomms-envelope-tracking-20131101/

An interesting question in this forum post but does this not really depend on the strength of the wifi/LTE signal? For me on wi-fi at home I can easily get 6 hours+ SOT. On a normal day with a mix of LTE & Wi-Fi I generally after between 4 and 5 hours SOT. My wi-fi signal at work is stronger than the LTE signal so I generally use the strength of the signal as a rule of thumb as to which will provide better batter rather than just the signal itself.

Hi, I just made this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sdev.autofi&hl=en
Basically uses GSM/CDMA and GPS Locations to automatically turn on/off your Wi-Fi. The app is for free.
Note, this is my first app, so if app crashes please submit the report so that I can fix it.
Leaving my phone over night with no wakes showing it will lose 3x as much battery idling with the screen off then on WiFi.
This was using "turn WiFi off during sleep" option to test if I could further minimize over night battery loss. I lose about 3% over 8 hours of idle, but on my data connection it lost 9%.
When the WiFi turns off the Data connection turns on, and vice versa. So only one is only ever being used at one time.
I'm curious how your wifi is performing because i'm getting pretty bad wifi reception and starting to think it's maybe a hardware fault.
On my old phone (One X) i'm getting full bars and a link speed of 72Mbps allmost everywhere in my livingroom.
On the One mini i have never had 72Mbps (max 54 and mostly 26 or lower) and frequently loose wifi connection in my house where the One X easally maintains a strong connection.
The same is with the bleutooth connection. When streaming music I only have to touch the top of the right corner and things start to stutter.
What is your experience? Please let me know so I know if i have to send it for repair.

It does sound bit strange. have you tried going into advance setting and put wifi optimization on?

Thanks for responding. I have tried that and it didn't seem te make a differnce.
What kind of link speeds are you getting?
You can check that by tapping on your wifi SSID when you are connected.
Thanks!
According to my phone, 65Mbps
