Hi all,
In the Settings menu, under social, since upgrading to 1.0.1 and rooting, I now get an "invalid parameter!" error. Under 1.0 and root, I did not have this error and was able to link my Google account. Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, what did you do to resolve it.
Thanks
Kim
Having the same issue. +1 to looking for anyone with any knowledge on how to resolve.
I had same issue. I unrooted, did a factory rest and it was still there. I updated firmware...still there. RE-rooted...still there. Un-rooted, called support, and after an hour on the phone following their instructions I was told to return it to the store (within return period).
I have updated firmware and rooted this one with no problem with the Social section under Settings.

Interesting. I also have the same problem in my 1.0.1 rooted version. but I haven't had this problem in my 1.0.0 versions (both stock & rooted) of my NC.
I hope that this will not be a hardware problem...
I just noticed mine is doing the same thing after rooting. Does anyone else experience this problem?

My girlfriend just got off the phone with tech support cause of this problem. Her nook was working awesome after the update but she had to do a factory reset for another issue and when it came back on, thats when she saw invalid parameters. Long story short, they couldnt resolve the issue and they're making her mail her nook back so she can get a new one. Oh and her nook was never rooted so this problem isn't just for the rooted nooks.
+1 worked initially but at some point since rooted 'invalid parameters' is all that appears now.
none of the usual solutions (unroot, reset, wipe, etc) have made a scrap of difference. Maybe a settings file somewhere on the device that doesn't get replaced after reset/wipe which is hard to believe. Only way to find it might be to compare to stock NC with/without the problem.
I haven't noticed any other issues though. Perhaps the problems lies in a cookie or session type ID that is linked to the nook but resides on the servers.
hoping someone smarter than me (not difficult) finds an answer.
Same problem here. Firmware 1.0.1 with autonook. The message will show even after complete format. I called customer support and after 10 minutes the guy told me that his supervisor informed him that several people are calling with the same problem an that the issue will be resolved with an update in the future. I'm going for an exchange anyway.
if anybody has it working on a rooted 1.0.0 or a 1.0.1 version can you use ADB and pull the /data/data/com.bn.nook.social folder and possibly post it up here?
My nc is rooted on 1.0.1 and Social does the error thing, and this is what the above file contains:
databases/
recommendations.db
webview.db
webviewCache.db
No other folders in the main one or anything. I think there should be a shared_prefs folder out there...
Check the files first for any sensitive password info!
- Will.
Mine started doing this after my last reset, so I upped it back to 1.0.1 and it still continued. I figured I did it with the root, but then I asked the guy at the store if he had heard of it. He said that they have had a few complaints about it, and that only a few of the devices with the issue had been rooted. So, it seems it has something to do with the original firmware.
He seems to think that if you setup Social, then reset and deregister, the setting isn't getting cleared (the guy is pretty savvy at our store). He has been keeping an unofficial tally, and said that he will ask others that have the problem if they did the same thing.
I agree, that sounds like the sequence of events that led to it happening for me.
I exchanged my unit about 2 weeks ago, rerooted to 1.0.1 and it still works as of today (knock on wood).
One thing I do remember before the problem, is the fact that I had task manager setup to kill the social app. Maybe this corrupted something inside the file system and led to the problem.

Is there any reason to register your Nook with B&N other then purchasing book to read on it?
I picked up a Nook a couple days ago and immediately used Nookie and Honeycomb from the SDCard. I've only booted and seen the intro video/setup once but never completed the setup.
I'm still not sure if I ever really plan on using the Nook with it's base software. I'll most likely flash the internal memory when the Honeycomb official source comes out and things get real stable.
I can't imagine that not registering will effect anything, but I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking something. I don't want it to bite me in the ass down the road.
I mainly want to make sure if I ever do boot into the stock setup that it doesn't auto update in the future and possibly complicate rooting the device.
Gonna bump this one up instead of creating my own. Tried searching, but there's so many threads about registering, I couldn't find anything about not registering, aside from this single thread. I also come from SD Froyo, where there's no registration, and don't care about anything having to do with B&N aside from the hardware itself. From some of the "lost registration" threads, all we lose is access to the B&N library/store, is that all? Considering finally moving over to CM7 flashed directly to the NC.
if youre not on stock rom, registering is useless!
That's what I thought, even though most of the builds still warn you to register before flashing. Like the CM7 guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227

Hey everyone, I just recently got a Samsung Captivate with Rogers, which is the i896.
I've been hearing a lot about rooting lately and i'm starting to understand a little more about what it is exactly. I'm interested in the idea that it can help speed up the phone and allow for more apps, but I have a few questions.
1) Where can I find the most recent way to root a ROGERS Captivate? I was reading around and read that the "One click fix" does not work anymore
2) Will rooting my phone change the interface of the phone?
3) If something goes wrong and my phone doesn't root, can I go back to the default settings easily?
I might have more questions later on but thats it for now. I'd just also like to hear your opinions on rooting and what exactly YOU have been able to do with your phone by rooting.
Thanks!
welcome ill answer your qs first then ill give you some links to help you out
A)rooting and flashing roms (2 diff things) are easiest done from STOCK 2.1 (which you should have) if you plan on flashing custom roms DONT do the rogers/samsung keis firmware update. it changes the recovery to 3e. (ink below if needed)
B) rooting does not change the interface. ROMS DO
C) if you cant successfully root, nothing has changed. you should be able to tho. and you can UNROOT, and wipe to factory too. for warranty repairs and they will never know.
OPPINION:
custom roms are the way to go, more current, full featured complete and on time, cutomizable, fun, and brain-power using than stock roms.
MY ADVICE: DO IT but TAKE YOUR TIME AND READ. I READ FOR 3 or 4 days before i touched a thing!! and still had very minor issues and things that had to be ironed out. dont let that scare you. its a learning experience. hopefully with the links i give you you will have less SEARCHING TO DO. but you my freind, are in the right fourm and right section, too! i have a good feeling about you already!
YOU CAN DO IT WATERBOY!!!

oh and it took me forever to learn that there is an ODIN one-click, and an Odin3 1.7, both flashing programs but DIFFERENT, we can use ODIN one-click but not recomended it flashes AT&T stock back. ALSO not to be confused with one-click ROOT,,,
Typically its best to read around but you can use the following for rooting and unrooting
It doesn't change the interface

Hey there, the rogers captivate is the same as the at&t captivate. I found a rogers phone in the snow, wiped, rooted and unlocked it. Installed at&t firmware and then flashed serendipity. I'm using it on telus no problem. Everything in this captivate forum will work great.

First of all, thank you guys so much for giving me real replies instead of a bunch of "Go read for yourself" or "try the search button" lol... I've been doing some reading but I needed to ask a few direct questions.
@Trusselo, i'm not too ignorant to computers. I know my way around a computer and used to do some web design and basic coding so i'm somewhat okay.
My only concern is that once i've rooted my phone, I have to use some sort of unix/linux commands to work around my phone and do things? Is this true? Also, I read that the rooted version has a different keyboard? I still have a hard time getting used to this touchscreen board.
SIDE QUESTION ABOUT CAPTIVATE AND WIFI: This is my biggest problem right now, its actually a small problem but it gets annoying. Basically, my WiFi stays connected when i'm at home but sometimes it seems like it slows done or the connection lags or even stops working. I can usually tell if this is happening because pages don't load fast enough in the browser or don't load at all. While this is happening, my wifi connection still says "Connected" though. I always have to go back, disconnect, re-type my password, connect again. Then I go back and it works fine. Is there any way to fix this?

Just rooting the phone does not change the interface at all. Rooting just allows you access to the locked system files so you can change them.
Also you won't have to use terminal commands to do hardly anything, but it would be a good practice to learn how to use it.
From there you can change your keyboard if you like. There are a few keyboards out there that are better than the stock keyboard is, as far a functionality.
Be warned once you get onto flashing and modding your phone, its like an addiction, and you probably wont be able to stop.

i really hope that you didnt think i was accusing you of not being good with computers or being patronizing, i was just trying to provide you (or anyone else that reads this) with as much info as i could, while not doing the work for you.
terminal commands: ive never had to use them, no adb shell, no terminal emulator on phone, although it wouldnt be outside of my skill, i just prefer to do it without learning something i dont need to. (yet.. still thinking about learning some apping)
keyboard: rooting does not change any part of the UI at all, all rooting does is allow you to access (read / write / copy /delete) protected system files. And you can only do those scary things with use of other root apps after rooting your phone.
wifi: this is why some people flash new modems, if you still have issues and really want to send it back for warranty, dont worry, you can have it back good as new in no time!
Not too sure what you mean by flash new modems... ? And I wasn't accusing you of anything lol. Just letting you know that i'm not 100% dumb when it comes to computer but even then I don't know if I would be ready to use typed commands and stuff to use my phone.

The modem is simply what the phone uses for connectivity. It is a separate piece of the firmware that can be flashed on its own. It is a topic that is a little beyond the scope of this post. However, there is a stickied thread in the Captivate development forum called 'the modem thread' that outlines a lot of the information. The main reason many people do this change is that some experience better connectivity, lower battery consumption, and some other benefits. Again modems are beyond the scope of this post, so I encourage you to read that sticky, as there can be some pitfalls to changing modems. Best of luck and enjoy the great phone!
Oh okay thank you. I thought you meant I would have to take my phone back and get a new one. The WiFi works fine, its just that I have to disconnect, enter my wifi password, then reconnect sometimes for it to work properly.
Do you mean that the WiFi is something that can be changed after the phone is rooted to work better?
Can't say for sure, but it's always worth rooting anyway.

The following has happened with both autonootered 1.1 and stock 1.2. I am running CM7.0.2 from an sd card also. Using a dual boot (manual button(s)) press.
For the second time, I have gone to a local B&N, gotten my Cafe Vanilla Frappicino, found a comfortable seat, booted up into the BN software, chose "Read In Store" for "Discovery of Witches" watched the book d/l and then immediately get the message that I have exceeded the time allotment for that day and to try again the next day!
This happened (with this title) under AN3.0/BN1.1 and again today with stock 1.2. My e-mail in/out worked fine when store connected as did all othere store related items. This tells me the connection was not the issue.
I found the knowledgeable rep in the store who I had discussed things with before and we tried to get it ("Discovery...") to re-load (unsuccessfully), rebooted several times and even rebootted with the sd card removed. That last time the title did reload but still came up with the "expired time" message. We picked another title at random and that had no problems!
The rep called the Corporate IT, explained the issue, gave them my unit's s/n and verified that there were no server related issues at that time.
I verified with him that there were no B&N "roadblocks" in place that prevent you from on-going reading of the same title which he stated there was not based on his own usage/experience. Example, The second time I opened that title in the store, it took me directly to where I had previously left off!
One of the reasons I haven't redone my internal memory to CM7+ is that I want to retain the in-store reading capability but this is really becoming a major annoyance.
I have two other local BN's where I will try and access this specific title early this week to see if history continues to repeat itself.
Any ideas/thoughts as to what the root cause is and any possible solutions???
I recommend just doing a Factory Reset.

Would greatly appreciate any assist with the following:
I have the following issue with my N2A powered Nook HD+. I have been using the N2A card exclusively for several months with almost flawless performance. However, I have recently run into the following issue with a successfully d/l and installed Zinio for Android app: "Failed to connect to the server. Please move to an area with a stronger wireless signal and try again." This happens no matter what my location is! I have a very solid, strong, and fast connection with all of my other apps.
Zinio says that it is because I am using a Nook (even though configured as an Android tablet) the app will not work and is not supported on that device. Here is the tech ass't manager's reply after I had several back and forths with a level one tech at Zinio:
"I apologize for any inconvenience. Zinio will not work properly on a Nook
device. If you are able to install the app, you will receive an error message
regarding not being able to connect to the internet -- this is normal behavior.
This is not something that we can resolve because Nook will not allow Zinio to
be used on their devices. There is no workaround that will fix this issue."
I had repeatedly explained to them in increasing detail that I was not using the BN software and that this issue was not displayed by any other app!
Their app d/l without any warning of conflict. It installed properly. It even starts up and displays its structure with no problem except for the all-important failure to connect.
Since everything else works just fine, what is the connection only issue? I have an online subscription to Aviation Week & Space Technology which is accessible only through Zinio. Desktop version is not a problem but I want to be able to access this on my HD+ which has the perfect screen size for it!
Thanks in advance.
Turns out that changing the identity of the HD+ to asus/Nexus 7 did the trick. Familiar with this process from my original NC days.

It runs fine on rooted stock and has for awhile. It's just in CM10 and CM10.1 that this problem exists. I think Zinio is full of it when it comes to the reason it isn't working.
I need to spend more time looking in to this but I have just been to busy to do it.
" I think Zinio is full of it when it comes to the reason it isn't working."
Keep in mind the following:
1. Zinio d/l from GP with no error messages regarding the tablet type.
2. The install after the d/l went off without a hitch.
3. When opening Zinio, the app structure appeared.
4. The "only" problem was the weak wifi/ can't access server" message.
Thanks for the moral support and could not have stated it better myself!
However, now that v2.1 of the stock BN software includes Google Play access, all of this might be moot. Evidently Zinio does work with this new update. As I have never tweaked the internals of my HD+, will definitely give this a try and see how well things work.
While I would prefer using 4.1, living with full access to GP under 4.0.4 might be doable. As long as I can access HBOGo, I would be thrilled!

RE: Zinio Problem with JB Internal Install
This is probably the easiest workaround that I have ever performed. Using information that I gleaned from N2A forums and XDA Developers forums,
I was able to get Zinio working on JB 4.2.2 in about 10 minutes. Here are the steps that I followed:
1) Make sure that Zinio is NOT installed on your NT
2) Download Build Prod Editor from Google Play.
3) Start up Build Prod Editor.
4) Tap ok on the information screen that pops up.
5) Scroll down the list of properties until you see "ro.product.model"
6) Tap on "ro.product.model"
7) In the pop up window that appears tap the Property Value box.
8) Enter "nookhdplus" - without quotes.
9) Click Save.
10) It should ask if you want to reboot, if it does tap yes. If it doesn't ask then reboot the NT yourself.
11) Once the NT reboots go to Google Play and download Zinio.
This is all I had to do. Really easy. I was reading my magazines in probably 20 minutes.
Now the disclaimer.
FOLLOW THIS PROCESS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
I am just an average Joe who BADLY wanted Zinio to work. I am not sure if this will have any adverse effects on your NT but I am not responsible if something goes awry.
I hope this works for you and that you enjoy running Zinio on your Nook HD!
