No Display After Flashing Continium from Serendipity - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had serendipity(latest) on my captivate(SGH-i897). It was having issues and I couldn't do anything except boot into CWM. I had Continium 4.3.1 on my SD card so I decided to try and flash that. It appeared to be successful. I rebooted and now I get no display.
Have tried taking the battery out for several minutes. Have held the power button down while it was out.
I have tried plugging it up to my charger for several minutes. Have tried holding the power button for several minutes. Have tried holding the 3 button combo for several minutes with no luck.
Is my kernel/modem gone and I have a brick? I have a jig which i have had to use before and fixed it from DL mode but that isn't working either. No display.

have you ever flashed any of the gingerbread bootloaders?
if so you are screwed, continuum flashes one of 2 bootloaders.
if not..
try taking out battery count to 5 put back in
DONT TOUCH ANY BUTTON!
put in jig
or
take out battery
plug phone into pc
hold buttons
put battery in.

Yeah, i had CM7 on it a while back. Went back to stock then serendipity. I'm bricked then?
The PC won't even detect a device when I connect the phone. Is there anyway to push a new bootloader to the phone?

does CM7 use gingerbread Bootloaders?
i dont think so.. not a while back at least... umm.
you shouldnt be bricked... but if all else fails send it back and play dumb.

Continuum doesnt have a 4.3.1. It has 4, 5.x, but no 4.3.1. Are you sure you don't have Cognition?

[Q] Loaded I9000 2.3.3 lost 3 button combo

Before I begin I know I'll be slammed for loading an incompatible ROM for my phone, dumb on my part, especially without a clockwork backup.
I was running a leaked 2.2 rooted, which when loaded removed clockwork so i could no longer take backups. I then followed pathikshah.com/blog/install-android-2-3-3-gingerbread-on-samsung-galaxy-s/ which I know says don't use for captivate, but I didn't read that.
I am now running 2.3.3 but my back button is not operational, it flashes when pressed as normal but completes no action. My home button however acts as my back button. My menu and search buttons are normal.
I do not have the 3 button combo capability as i once had before, the screen just stays black and the buttons light up and it stays like that till i battery pull.
Other than that and some crazy screen distortion of colors when it boots it runs fine from what I can tell. But I'd like to at some point get back to a stable/compatible ROM.
Please let me know how I can somehow get to stock or a stable ROM. Thanks in advance.

You only option may be to buy or make a jig to force download mode then you can flash the stock ROM using Odin.
erm, im not 100 % sure because i havent tried this yet... but if i read it correctly, your rom is still (somewhat) operational. So try installing rom manager, flash cwm, then reboot into recovery.
From that, you can install the 3 button fix. Then i would suggest going into download mode, flash back to stock 2.2 using the odin back to stock. Then you can begin the process of installing 2.3.3
Also, the problem with yours is, you installed the i9000 version which for some reason has that button mapping problem. There are 2 versions of 2.3.3 on this forum (Cyanogen Mod 7 and MIUI). You can use either one of those, the buttons work perfectly and i dont see anything wrong with it.
Oh and, as the above person said, if my method doesnt work, you can either buy a jig, or build one yourself. There are threads in this forum about both . Also, please refrain from using I9000 stuff unless you fully know what it does. Im not much of a modder myself which is why i only download stuff from the captivate dev section.
Hope i helped
P.S... youd only be slammed if you didnt know what your problem was and blamed someone else for it. This forum is to help people
Try volume up and power, or volume down and power
Miui
This video helped me to go to downloading mode on my i9000 that had its 3 buttons bug:
youtube.com/watch?v=D0aoabVtPJ8&feature=feedlik
you need to buy a 301k or 300k resistor and it will work for 100%
adb reboot download!
also see if odin sees the phone when the screen is black, if you say buttons light up the phone is on, could be a problem with the image used in download mode. i once had this happen after a bad crash on the old manhatten project kernel. the splash screen images got corupted and it wouldn't boot passed a messed up lookin splash screen. thought i fried the video chip and went to flash back to stock. the screen stayed black with the 2 button + usb cable combo but odin showed the yellow box. so i started flashing and halfwat through the little guy with the shovel poped up. i was in download mode but my screen was black do to corrupted splash screens. phone took a flash and went back to normal.
success
Thank you all for your help. I ended up building a jig out of 3 100k and a 1k resistor and an igo adapter. Tore it apart and built like jig and like every end to a Macguyver episode the crazy contraption worked like a charm. Funny thing is I loaded stock 2.2 ROM, which in turn bricked the phone. I got the phone ! computer logo. So I used the jig again and got it flashed to stock and up from there to Cyanogenmod 2.3.3.
Thanks again everyone.

[Q] Can't flash to stock 2.1 from JVB... soft brick, red screen

Hi all,
Tried returning to stock 2.1 using Odin v1.0 One-click. I had Perception II Beta 3 installed (based on JVB). Every time I try to flash it, Odin freezes on factoryfs.rfs and the phone's screen goes completely red (though one time it went pink).
Any ideas? Am I using the wrong Odin? Am I screwed?
Thanks,
thecoolestcow
Whew, got it. I re-downloaded Odin, still no luck. Then I tried a different USB cable and it worked! Hooray!
As a note, I was getting a variety of different colors, and I had to get into Download mode accordingly:
Remove battery, sim, external SD
Open ODIN
Plug in USB
Hold down volume up + volume down while inserting the battery
Keep trying to flash if you get the same problem I had!
Are you using 2.1 with the three button fix baked on? That one will not work.
Need to flash using original 2.1 which will give you the correct boot loaders.
Only thing I could think of.
If he was using the 3 button fix it would be a brick. No colored screens of any type nothing. Dead. Gone.
Thee problem was a bad connection like he said, swapping cables and/or ports usually solves those issues unless the usb port on the phone is bad.
thanks guys. my power went out while going to stock from 2.3.3, it wouldn't even turn on.

Interesting Problem with Cappy

I've Had my cappy for something over a year and up until i finally got a working jig it was out of commision for about a month, Then all was saved with the jig and i reflashed stock and started from scratch trying new roms, Then, when trying to go from stock to apex using their own odin flashers, Then when it went back into recovery i hit reboot to begin using CWM. Then all of a sudden, The Gingerbread version of the softbrick screen comes up, Phone----!-----Computer. No worries i have my jig, then when i remove the battery, wait and put the jig back in . . . the phone just shows me a bricked screen again, with a jig i know worked. What have i done?

If by "bricked screen" you mean the Phone--!--Computer screen, you should be able flash back from that screen. In theory, ODIN should recognize your phone at that screen in a manner similar to the way it recognizes it at the normal download mode screen.
As long as you see the computer/phone symbol you should be able to get it reflashed with the J6 Oneclick. If it never appears in ODIN try all of your USB ports. Odin only sees my phone on the two rear ports, go figure.
As far as getting the yellow download screen goes you might consider some other key combos before you declare it non-functioning. Did you flash it back to stock J6? If so, did the 3-button stop working? That may be your issue. Also, you may have put boot loaders on it from another device such as an I9000 and changed the key combo while flashing another ROM. Try battery pull/replace with vol up and USB, vol down and usb, both up/down with USB and see if any of those work.

[Q] WEIRD PROBLEM, Captivate won't turn on.

Weird problem here! Will explain it briefly and then extended.
Samsung Galaxy Captivate i897. Had Eclair ROM (does that even exist?). Was charging via USB, disconnected it and charging indicator continued, so I turned off and tried turning it back on: It didn't.
Couldn't get it to recovery mode via 3 key combo, only to download mode, So i took it to a friend to upgrade ROM. He installed Gingerbread. Worked fine.
Only minutes after, I turned it off to change SIM cards, put the battery back in, and it wouldn't start again!
CURRENT STATUS:
I can only get it to Download Mode (vol up + vol down + power). I can't get it into recovery mode (vol down + short power press DOENS'T work).
When it tries to boot up I get this screen: Battery image (like when it's off and charging) + Loading icon.
STRANGEST THING: The same issue has happened with two different ROMs!! WTF?
PLEASE, any ideas? I'm from Paraguay, so we don't have Samsung Care Center or whatever to take it to.
Thanks in advance!
It seems to be a problem with the bootloaders, but I do not see what caused it if you did not just flash them. Anyways, try reflashing the bootloader (Dangerous) if you are willing to risk hard bricking your phone, or just reflash to stock using heimdal one click.
Also check your battery on another device if possible, not saying that you have a low battery, I am saying that your battery is completely ****ed. :3.
Well...firstly you're confused as to what the button combos are.
Recovery = all 3 buttons held until the splash comes up then let go.
Download = both volumes ONLY (no power at all)and inserting a usb cable.
Now...that being said it sounds like a hardware issue, the usb port itself to be exact, it thinks there is a cable connected that's why it booted into download mode, when you just hold the volume buttons does it do that?
it could be a kernel issue...but you've said it happens on multiple roms so you've changed that variable already and still had it happen.

It could be hardware, it could be the bootloaders. Also, some bootloaders have different ways of getting into recovery. Try VOL+ and Power just that.
There is a good chance it is with the battery, if it wont turn on, and as mijaelrodriguez said, I could also be a problem with the charging port. I suggest flashing back to stock froyo 2.2 using heimdal as heimdal will flash everything, including bootloaders, so there is less space for something to go wrong. after flashed to 2.2, use mini kies to go to official 2.3.5 gingerbread. Then just flash the designgears auto root kernel (this will give you root, will not allow your phone to boot as the kernel is incompatible with 2.3.5) then just flash back to stock kk4 kernel. it will give you root on 2.3.5 to start flashing new ROMs again.

A bad battery wouldn't make the phone think it's charging.
Those other combos you suggested are for I9000 gingerbread bootloaders, he said he was on eclair, don't think he would have those...and if he did, it would say I9000 on the first boot splash.
Bootloaders just don't get messed up out of the blue...that would brick the phone. That doesn't happen by just charging.
Odin flashes bootloaders too, and why use heimdall to go to froyo with froyo bootloaders and then use kies to go to gingerbread that also flashes bootloaders, when you can just go directly to gingerbread with Odin/heimdall? And NOT have to flash bootloaders TWICE,
First of all, I had this same problem, and it was caused by a bad battery. second, you can not use kies unless your phone is booted up, therfore use heimdal. I tend to use the official firmware released through kies over firmware a single guy obtained in his basement. Now, no need to turn this into a thread war, just throwing suggestions at a guy with a problem with his phone.
McSpammer seems apropos.
Im going with Studa on this one. Anytime you don't have to flash bootloaders its better.
If your friend flashed you from Eclair to Gingerbread without including the Gingerbread Bootloader, that would cause problems.
The GB bootloader seems to be backward compatible, but Eclair & Froyo bootloaders are not compatible with GB.
A long shot, since it did boot once.
Another long shot. Check your USB port for dirt, dust, lint, or corrosion.
It only takes one well aimed raindrop if the slider is open.
This can cause some really strange symptoms.
Blow it out. Use something like flat toothpick to GENTLY clean the contacts. the contacts are all on the front side of the connector that sticks up in the middle.
