3 button no longer working!? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

okay so heres whats happened in total
i have a rogers captivate...flashed it to cognition rom
LOVED IT
3 button worked, everything worked i was loving life...
then i decided hey lets go to cognition 2.2 so i used odin to get back to JF6 or stock whatever...and i accidentally removed the usb so it soft bricked
i fixed it using the resistor jig and got it back into download to flash with odin
now heres the weird part...im about to root it and put on clockwork, but my 3 button combo ain't working!!! it used to perfectly now its not!!?!?
so its not that my phone doesn't do it...its just that it wont..
i try it and the att logo just keeps flashing no matter how long i hold down all 3 buttons, or let go of power after the 2nd flash or anyhting NOTHING WORKS...then i read to plug it into the computer, wait till you see that battery symbol, and try...NOPE doens't work...then i thought oaky ill just reflash it with odin...
I CAN"T GET IT INTO DOWNLOAD MODE ANYMORE by holding both volumes and plugging it into the pc...the drivers are all there, everything...
this phone is starting to piss me off now...
anyone got an idea before i throw it out the window?

use z4root for rooting your phone

Wait until the AT&T logo flashes by 2 -3 times before releasing the power button...........works for me.
Did you search as well.........? There are tons of post discussing this.
This post also belongs in Q&A, not Android Development.
oh okay thank you. I am trying this now.
if not just try using the one click odin to flash back to stock just need to put into download mode( with the usb cable already connected to pc, hold vol up and down, then plug in the cable while holding vol buttons)
Read the five million posts on how to recover. There are tutorials and the wiki.
Do a search and bottom line is your phone isn't bricked.

Don't worry at all mate, I just bought the captivate today as well.
Mine's all fixed.
Hello,
I installed Android 2.2 FROYO on my Samsung Captivate, Then z4root ( temporary root). Then installed OCLF 2.0. OCLF restarted my device now there's a black screen and it vibrates every 30 seconds or so...
EDIT: Reinstalling 2.2 via ODIN3 allowed me to get my device back! What did I do wrong, in the oclf 2.0 step? Still interested in installing that TIA
EDIT NUMBER 2: Must have had apps installed on my SD card. If you don't move everything off of your SD card ( Setting/application/manage apps/sd card) and onto your phone. You will get a "loop" @ boot.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So. Use OCLF 2.0 to reinstall froyo. then use Superoneclick to root/allow non-market apps. Then apply the lagfix
Hope this helps
i let the at&t screen come up 2 times and 3 times. It didnt work. Im about to try the ordin way. Thanks so much guys, i was scared! I still kinda am but im not givin' up!!

This doesn't belong in Development.
when your in download mode you then run ODIN and hit start. It should reflash back to Stock. after it completely restarts you should use the master clear to wipe your phone(dont have to). Once this is finished your going to have to root your device again.

You're supposed to have the Odin One-Click on your PC (google "odin one click JF6," you'll find it), and have that running beforehand. Then boot into download mode, and plug it into your computer. In the Odin One-Click it should recognize your phone and say "COM4" or something like that. Click start, and it will reflash your phone to stock, and it'll boot automatically when done flashing.

you may have to build a jig or buy one online, but first, make sure you understand what is download mode and how to flash back to stock rom before you do any fixes.

possibly bricked??

I just recieved a new captivate via a warranty issue. Welll this one came with froyo 2.2 already loaded. My last capitvate had serendipity 6.4 installed and had no problems with flashing that one. Since I go my new captivate I wanted to try flashing a new ROM of course. So I decided on continuum v4. Here is where my problem started I opened odin3 plugged the phone in while holding the volume buttons and sent it into download mode. then clicked start on odin and let it do its thing. it got where it said "removed" in the bottom part and "RESET" up in the green bar. after looking at my phone it was just a black screeen with the battery charging symbol loading. it would come up and then disappear and come back up. it kept doing this for a while. this is where i made the mistake....after waiting a while i unplugged the phone from the computer to see if it would even start or anything. Well of course it wont start at all. it gets stuck at the AT&T screen and wont go any further. I can't get it back into download mode and dont know what to do? is my phone a paperweight now? IF anyone can help, i would greatly appreciate it. Either via here or phone. I've got my sim card back in my backflip right now.
what do you guys think?

Try this, I found it by googling
I've had success with this method to get into Download Mode:
1. Remove battery, SIM and microSD from phone (if you have one)
2. Wait at least 10 seconds with the phone in this state
3. Plug your phone into your computer (this step has always been optional for me)
4. Hold Volume Up/Down, don't let go!
5. While holding both volume keys, insert the battery

Lot of things could of happened, mainly because something might have happened to the wired connection between the pc and phone during the process. Im sorry I don't know the answer to the second question though. Maybe because the odin you were using was going back to stock "eclair" and not stock froyo?

Eclair, froyo, and now gingerbread same odin process.
Unless it's the one click version which I think only comes in eclair flavored.
Then the only other option I can think of for him is a jig.

Yes there are a few versions of odin but, either will work fine ... It's been reported that the one click will remove the 3 button fix in some phones with build numbers later than 1010, that info can be found under the battery btw, I've personally never had that problem, I flash and mod 3 captivates 1. Is a1010, 2. Are 1012's. All I've used is the one click version and they all still have 3 button combo.
There is an odin that flashes the 3 button combo while it flashes to stock, if you either never had it or have lost it ... Which I suggest you look for and use after you get jiggy with it so you'll have the combo for future use.
after making the jig with the resistors and everything, instead of going to download mode it just tries to turn the phone on and flashes the at&t screen on and off repeatedly....not sure what to try now
Scratch that. Was doing it barehanded and it would just try turning it on. I used some gloves and got it into download mode. Now I just need to plug it into my computer with odin alredy opened and once it recognizes and click start and let it do its thing right? And just don't unplug it right? What should I do if odin freezes up?
Sent from my MB300 using XDA App
dont use ODIN one click. try AIO captivate toolbox 3.0. it uses heimdall which i have found to be much better for me
might have another problem now. i think the battery is dead on my phone. **** just doesn't want to work out for me. if i plug the phone in all i get is a battery icon that will flash on for a sec, then disappear. it will do this and only this forever. FML

[Q] Build 1009? Trouble with download and recovery mode?

My wife's captivate is build 1009. I can't seem to find any info on it. It was on stock froyo but rooted with non-market apps enabled. I odin back to eclair and was trying to install CWM. I put the update.zip on the SD but when I try to boot into recovery (Volume up + Down and pwr) it just boots up normal. I had to use a jig to get it into download mode originally.
Any Ideas?

Did you release power button when at&t screen comes up?
SIGNATURE : Life is like a box of captivates, you never know if your gps will work
Hi,
My phone is 1007 and had the same problem.
Solution:
- You need to have the 3buttonfix.zip and the cwm update.zip on your SD.
- adb reboot recovery (from windows command line with enabled usb debugging on the phone)
- update to cwm then flash 3buttonfix
Warning: 3buttonfix only contains the Secondary Boot Loader so use it only if you have the stock bootloaders or your phone will get a hard brick
I recently got a 1009 build and have had zero problems. When I got it, the first thing I did was root it and fox the whole 3e recovery thing (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213), then it was good to go.
I have found that this phone I got is the best one I have had, period.
I first had a 1007 - crappy gps but never had any loss of button combos or anything. It always was easy to flash anything.
Then I had a 1008 - awesome gps, but had problems with losing button combos when flashing different things.
Now on 1009 - best of both. awesome gps, all button combos work flawlessly.
on my 1008 I did notice that sometimes I could get to recovery holding all three buttons longer than usual - until the att screen flashed a couple of times. Maybe this would work on your 1009.
Also on the 1008 I would flash back to stock with ODIN 1 click, then I could reflash the stock 3 button fix to get them back.
When the update.zip is in SD, and then on stock recovery you have to press re-install packages twice before cwm will kick in.

Thanks for all the help. It is appreciated. I tried every button combo and short and long presses and nothing works. I was able to use a jig to get into download and get back to stock 2.1 I tried to just use kies to update to the stock 2.2 but I keep getting "unregistered device" message and won't "light up" the update button.
I may try going to AT&T and seeing if they will let me exchange it or calling Samsung and seeing what they will do.
If all else fails I may try the abd thing. Once I figure that out
Thanks again for the suggestions.
I've got Serendipity 7 on my phone and loving it! Never imagined I'd have so much trouble with this one. It was only rooted.
Did you try the 3E recovery fix yet? I just got a replacement phone today and it is a 1009 build. The 3 button combo is working on my end. Sorry you are having issues.

It is supposed to. I think I misspoke thought, it should be the 3 button combo fix. Not the 3e recovery.

The key combo to get into recovery for the Cappy is NOT Vol up + Vol down + Power
The key combo to get into recovery for the Cappy IS Vol up + Power until the screen comes on, then release.
Well I had to go to ATT to pick up a micro cell. They gave me a $200 credit on my bill! There is almost no reception at my house.
While I was there I talked to them about my wife's phone. We have the AT&T warranty. He gave me a number for the warranty department.
They were able to tell that the phone had been rooted. This is after odin back to 2.1. They did offer to allow me exchange it for the deductible of $125. No Thanks!
The phone still works fine. I just need to learn a little more to get it updated. The suggestions here should work.
I'm sorry but i think you all are crazy.
The 3e recovery fix will not help you get to recovery. It unlocks the 3e recovery so you can flash unsigned zips like on 2e.
The key combo for captivates in indeed Vol up + Vol down + Power (not on ginger leak), i use it 5 times a day. Hold down all three untill you see the atnt screen, keep holding and you should see it go black and come back again, then release power.
And if you odin one click back to stock and master clear atnt can NOT tell that you were ever rooted. There will be no trace of ever doing anything, just as fresh as it was out of the box. Many people have got replacements by doing this.
But if the recovery combo doesnt work then the 3 button fix and adb are your options
When I try to upgrade with kies it says unregistered device. An earlier post mentioned a fix for this but I'm not sure if I'm up to it yet.

Anyone who wants flash anything on an android device should install adb on their computer.
How long have you been trying to get this to work? Adb takes like 5 minutes to install (if that) and once it's there it's just 3 words to get into recovery, Seriously it's "adb reboot recovery" and bam.
What did you install? What I read has me installing many programs and plugins on the computer. Do I need all of that or is there a simpler package? What needs to be on the phone.

Flashback to 2.1 completed successfully? Which ODIN did u use? What keycombo are you trying
A jig might work but more likely you'll need JTAG. Same thing happened to my phone a week ago and I ended up shipping it off to connexion2005. This is a high risk when changing bootloaders (2.3 -> 2.2/2.1).

I'm guessing bootloaders the key role here. Also did you master clear before you flashed back to eclair, or just straight to odin?

Ok there's where the problem happened. That .tar only contains the sbl.bin (secondary bootloader) with no primary. So now you have a gingerbread primary and a froyo secondary resulting in a hard brick, you're only option now is jtag. Connexion2005 has already posted in this thread, pm him and he'll get you fixed up.

One thing I found after bricking my phone a few times is you might want to try download mode again. Have Odin running with a full stock rom loaded. Try the battery trick again. Plug your phone into the usb cable, making sure the battery is removed. Hold both volume buttons and insert your battery. Wait a minute while holding the volume buttons. While holding the volume buttons, keep pulling the battery out and putting it back in. Even though nothing shows up on the phone screen, once Odin did pick up the phone on com and I was able to flash it.
worth a shot. I was ready to send my my phone in for jtag, but persisted and got lucky.
If you flashed Gingerbread bootloaders, then flashed 3 button fix, you hard bricked it. Only way to revive it is with jtag.
anybody know anyone has jtag service in Los Angeles?
The captivate is one if the most difficult phones to jtag, and flute that reason, The only place I know of that can jtag a captivate is

Interesting Problem with Cappy

I've Had my cappy for something over a year and up until i finally got a working jig it was out of commision for about a month, Then all was saved with the jig and i reflashed stock and started from scratch trying new roms, Then, when trying to go from stock to apex using their own odin flashers, Then when it went back into recovery i hit reboot to begin using CWM. Then all of a sudden, The Gingerbread version of the softbrick screen comes up, Phone----!-----Computer. No worries i have my jig, then when i remove the battery, wait and put the jig back in . . . the phone just shows me a bricked screen again, with a jig i know worked. What have i done?

If by "bricked screen" you mean the Phone--!--Computer screen, you should be able flash back from that screen. In theory, ODIN should recognize your phone at that screen in a manner similar to the way it recognizes it at the normal download mode screen.
As long as you see the computer/phone symbol you should be able to get it reflashed with the J6 Oneclick. If it never appears in ODIN try all of your USB ports. Odin only sees my phone on the two rear ports, go figure.
As far as getting the yellow download screen goes you might consider some other key combos before you declare it non-functioning. Did you flash it back to stock J6? If so, did the 3-button stop working? That may be your issue. Also, you may have put boot loaders on it from another device such as an I9000 and changed the key combo while flashing another ROM. Try battery pull/replace with vol up and USB, vol down and usb, both up/down with USB and see if any of those work.
