Are Odin and Kies the only ways to update the i9000? Are there other ways of flashing new firmwares? Is Odin the only tool used to flash custom firmwares?
There are so many threads that I'm a bit confused.
Thanks
you can flash a kernel in the form of 'update.zip'
you flash this through recovery and then you will have CWM recovery which allows you to flash most roms thru the phone itself.
so you do not need to use odin or kies but sometimes using odin is a lot quicker and using odin is essential if you get a bricked phone and need to flash stock firmware to recovery it
Oh didn't know that you could use update.zip
Can stock firmwares be updated from "update.zip"
Also, do you need to root the phone for using custom kernels?
Thanks for the info!
well you can get a kernel such as speedmod and it will be named update.zip
you boot into android recovery and flash this update.zip once or twice and that will turn android recovery into CWM / 2e recovery, and with this recovery you can flash unsigned zips, such as roms, themes, kernels, modems ect.
as for the root, im not sure. I started off flashing a kernel thru odin, which rooted my phone and gave me CWM recovery.
dont be afraid of odin. its ever so simple, even simpler to flash a kernel, it takes less than 15 seconds
You can also use the Open-Source Cross-Platform Flashing Suite Heimdall.

Hi
Maybe I didn't search very well but I have a question that seems very stupid...
With Odin, is it possible to flash a custom rom?
I mean the rom that i use normally flash with voodoo on the recovery mode can't bee found by odin...
Thing is that i've got the corrupted memory problem and acted to fast and flashed the stock 2.2 firmware from bell....now i'm stuck with 3e recovery...
If I could flash to a pre-rooted rom with CWM or Voodoo it would be better i thing if i want to try some manipulation with adb

I haven't confirmed this or searched but I think it's because you have voodoo enabled, this format is ext4 which is a linux format and can't be seen on windows unless you ahve some 3rd party software installed. Just boot into recovery and disable the voodoo, this will put your phone back to the normal format and odin should recognize it.....i'm totally guess here since i haven't tried it but I think this would be the cause
Darky's ROM is meant to be flashed via Clockwork recovery and can not be flashed by odin, darky's comes in a zip file and odin only uses .tar extensions
Hello.
So i've got a problem with my I9000.
I've upgraded it to froyo, official release, so i'm stuck with the 3e recovery.I recently flashed the voodoo lagfix kernel via Odin. I would like to get clockwork recovery to replace 3e, but I understand i have to flash it via Odin, too. My question is : Is clockwork's kernel going to replace voodoo? If so, how can i have them both?
Thanks a lot in advance.
if you upgrade offical froyo then u must first do a root..the root files can be find here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108...download correct root for your firmwire phone...then flash it tru odin..when u done with that u must download a rom manager from market...and install it to get clockwork mode =)
I wouldn't follow the previous poster's advice.
If you're going to use cwm, why do you want stock firmware? Try flashing speedmod kernel to get cwm, which has built in root and lagfix accesable from recovery. Or just go to a custom fw like docrom kitchen.
Best procedure for going custom with the sgs is a single flash of speedmod w/ cwm from odin, and then flash anything else via cwm.
Sent from xda premium app on i9000m.
My SGS does not boot and does not enter recovery mode. I can enter download mode though. I suspect it happened after I removed some files from SD card.
Can I access SD card in download mode?
How can I use download mode to restore firmware and the recovery?
Thanks in advance.
u have to reflash your firmware. if u get only downloadmode working u can only reflash your device.
try a custom kernel first. if this wont work, then flash new firmware
Strange.from download mode you can only flash firmware.I think u can use adb and connect your phone to computer.try little search on topics don't rush first read carefully.

@malcho
adb wont work in download mode. only in cwm and after successful boot
So I understand I need to connect to PC in download mode and then use some software like ODIN to flash a ROM? Correct?
thats right.
may u can flash via kies, if u want a stock rom from samsung
I didn't know that info about adb. Thanks for info

Well, it's strange but looks better. Even before I did anything with ODIN the phone booted into the new ROM but I still cannot get into recovery. Seems like ROM installation procedure deleted something essential to run the recovery.
So now I have the download mode and Android working.
I am trying not to make any sudden moves so that I won't lose to ability to boot the ROM. What would be the best way to restore ClockworkMod recovery?
What ROM are you running now?
From a running stock-ROM the easiest way is to flash some custom kernel that includes CWM.
Here's a list http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966646
For 2.2.1-based ROM I prefer Speedmod.
For 2.3.3-based, choose your own
edit: There are some ROMs/kernels that can only enter recovery when USB-debugging is on.

I've just switched from Darky's 9.2 to PilotX with 2.6.35.7-I9000X[email protected]#Beta4.2_1 kernel.
From what you are saying I understand CWM recovery needs Linux kernel to run. I thought it's a stand alone boot-loader independent from the OS and kernel.
I installed CF-Root-XW_NEE_JVH-v3.2-CWM3RFS which comes with CWM recovery via ODIN with no effect. I still cannot reach recovery mode.
My phone came with 3e recovery which I downgraded to 2e (I don't remember how I did it then). Is it possible it has something to do with the problem?
You should always flash to stock when you have an issue.
You can also use Darky's resurrection (at least, part A: Pit with re-partition)
Then flash the original firmware (from samfirmware.com)
Thanks to everyone.
The problem was solved using http://www.v00d00.co.il/GBFINAL.pdf guide. Note, this guide is only relevant for Hebrew PilotX ROM.
Hi guys,
i just got a Galaxy S (international, germany) and wanted to flash Clockwork Mod so i can flash a custom rom (miui). I got it with version 2.2 so i rooted it with z4root 1.3 and then tried RomManager to get CWM on it. But it did always reboot into Samsung stock recovery mode. So i tried this Odin3 1.7 and flashed a Kernel and got into a bootloop (First this one, then i used the one promoted in this video (YouTube Video, description XDA Thread with promoted Kernel. Phone now stuck at booting (isn`t even bootlooping, just stuck at the GALAXY S GT etc. logo. I still can reach the Download Mode.
Can anyone please help how to get at least the phone working again I`m really desperatly.
Greetings from Germany & Merry Christmas

Install a new Rom with odin will make your phone boot again.
2.2 is probably too old now.
Upgrade to Gingerbread Stock using Odin. Turn on Repartition and follow the instructions to flash.
Download a Custom Kernel for the Gingerbread firmware that you flashed. Every Kernel except the stock comes with CWM Recovery.
Copy the MIUI zip file to sdcard and flash it with recovery. It should boot right up.
If you are still having bootloops, try doing a factory reset and then boot MIUI.
Don't try things that you aren't experienced with.
Anyway, download odin 1.85, flash stock Froyo, launch Kies, update to official Gingerbread, launch Odin, flash Semaphore Kernel and GG.
Merry Christmas!
How can i flash Stock Froyo/Gingerbread trough Odin? Can`t find anything usefull @ google
btw i can reach Recovery Mode (CWM / Speedmonk something)
(Kinda experienced by flashing around with my N1 for around 2 years now, but never heard about this Odin Program)

I am not going to help you with this one. You need to get comfortable with the forum and its contents first. Read all the guides and stickies before proceeding with Firmware flashing. There are many different types of firmwares with Bootloaders which are often dangerous to flash and few without bootloaders. Hence, first go through the guides and go with the flashing only when you are confident that you are doing everything in right order.

Just do what dhiru1602 says. after you flashed it with the latest Gingerbread ,
flash the cf-root kernel with odin . than download the latest galaxian/semaphore kernel, copy it to your internal sd-card and flash it with the app SGS Kernel Flasher . you can find that app on the market. good luck mate !
Thanks guys, u really saved christmas for me Just booted up the latest Miui Rom!
Happy Holidays

I already have a custom rom installed but I'm going to sell my Note... So I want to make it official but rooted...
I cant find any thread for it. A near official rom I found is CleaNote rom but I want a fully offcial rom like on Samfirmware but rooted.
I dont want to download via samfirmware because then I will have to though whole process of rooting again and then triangle removing mod etc...
its just a one step method for rooting ics these days.
Download the rom of your choice
download philz kernel as per rom
boot into recovery
install zip
done
you have root, and cwm and safe kernel
No triangle, no counter
There is a prerooted gb rom but i dont think there is a prerooted ics cause its not safe to stay stock after you get rooted
So as nokiamodeln91 said, download a stock ics rom and flash philz kernel
Thanks guys!
I hv downloaded the Stock rom from Samfirmware in ZIP format... As my phone is rooted, can I use mobile ODIN to flash that zip and Philz Kernel OR should I use cwm recovery to flash both.... (Im asking ths bec what if the phone reboots immediately after installing rom via cwm.... it wont gimme a chance to install philz after rebooting because stock rom also installs stock kernel)
Use pc odin to install the stock rom and then philz from recovery... Or u can use mobile odin aslo. If u already rooted, mobile odin may give the option to inject su, and u may have root as well after the rom install.
cwm u can't flash stock
You cant use cwm to flash a stock rom
You can use either pc odin or mobile odin to do so
