As for a cheap tablet, should I purchase a Nook Color? $250, isn't a bad deal.
Is it worth it? Laggy?
It's worth it. Benchmarks running cm7 beat the benchmarks of my evo running sense.
Well, it really depends on what you want to do.
As a tablet pc for the price it can't be beat, Don't buy it if you are expecting a powerhouse of a mobile device that will play crysis 2.
For my uses it's a perfect device, I use it for email, web surfing, rss feeds and ebooks and for a little music off and on.
If you are looking for something that has manufacturer support and will play HD movies with no configuration and has a battery that will last for a week with 3g wireless, then no this will not be the best for you.
All-in-all though I love it esp for the price, what this 'ereader' can do is amazing.
But before you buy you really need to ask yourself what you want to do,otherwise you will be like the other poster in the 'I regret buying a nook' thread....
It does depend on your expectations. If you want something that just works great out of the box with no effort, this is potentially your device. The stock works very well. The browser is very responsive and the Pulse app is great. All I would need in the stock is a comic book reader and it would be perfect as-is.
Now, if you want lots of functionality, you can install a new OS either internally or on an SD card. For the SD route, the experience is quite good. Not really much lag at all with my Sandisk Class 4. For running off a card, its impressive and I understand the internal install is even better. Once they get honeycomb ironed out and stable, it will be perfect.
I have an iPad, bought it new, love it. I bought an NC 10 days ago and gave it to my girlfriend as a gift. I am thinking about buying another one for me. For $250 I think they're awesome. The screen is very nice. I think it is only going to get more useable.

How are you in my brain??? (kidding)
That being said, my buddy bought a nook the day he saw CM7 on mine. He also liked blowing away my EVOs quadrant score, but got mad when I kicked him off my tethering for gloating.
I wouldn't buy one retail for $250 when you can save a bit by shipping around or if you are ok buying used. I see two for under $200 locally on craigslist.

short answer ... definitely worth it. Had mine for a few days, installed CM7 (Gingerbread). Much better than what I had expected from a $250 device. The soft keys are unresponsive on very rare occasions.
Four months ago, it was far and away the best value you could get in a small tablet. It still is a great value and I have no regrets, but the Asus Eee Pad Transformer is incredibly intriguing. However, by the time you get the max RAM and dock, it's much more than 2x the price of the nook.

I'd caution against this approach. $50 is not a large enough savings to take the chance on latent problems and then dealing with potential warranty headaches born from not having the original receipt. If you're comfortable with that risk, then by all means.

Personally, I bought it as an expensive toy. I've used it mostly for leisure e-reading, browsing, and textbooks. I've stuck a few engineering textbooks on it (works surprisingly well with EZPDF and landscape mode). Although, I do think a 10" screen at the very least would be more comfortable fit for textbooks.
When it's in not use, it's usually sitting on my desk as a photo frame in slideshow mode. And I have to say, the pictures really do look awesome thanks to the sexy IPS screen.
All in all, well worth the $250+tax I payed for it nearly 4 months ago. Going from stock to autonootered to froyo/honeycomb to CM7/phiremod made it feel like it just kept getting better.
Currently using the latest CM7 build overclocked to 1300 MHz. Browsing runs smooth enough in Dolphin HD to not be an annoyance.
I used mine as an eReader for the first time today! LOL
Makes an awesome tablet...so yeah, its worth it!
test one out. it's 1000x better rooted. i enjoy mine.
why don't they just make it into a full tablet and sell more?!?
Just go for it and you wont repent. Worth every penny, rather lot more!
Last year the Nook Color was an awesome value for just $250. It was a 7 inch Android device with a 1024x600 resolution IPS display, 800MHz processor with SGX530 graphics, and 512MB of RAM. Out of the box it was mostly just an ereader, but it isn't difficult to root and you can even boot a seperate ROM straight from an SD card without having to modify the stock OS, very awesome.
This year though, some nicer tablets have come down in price. The Nook Color is certainly still the best at it's price range. But there are some tablets not much more expensive that have some advantages worth spending a bit more money on.
The Galaxy Tab wifi is $350.
+ It's a tablet out of the box and Android 2.3 is rolling out.
+ 385 grams, it's lighter than the 422 gram Nook Color.
+ 1GHz TI OMAP 3630 processor, Nook Color is a 800MHz TI OMAP 3621.
+ 16GB internal storage.
+ Dual cameras.
+ More attractive appearance, flat glass front, white back.
+ Easily accessible microSD slot.
- Not an IPS display.
The ASUS Transformer is $400
+ Android 3.0 Honeycomb.
+ 10 inch 1280x800 IPS display
+ 1GHz dual core Tegra 2 processor
+ 1GB RAM
+ 16GB internal storage
+ Dual cameras.
+ More attractive appearance (yeah, I think the NC is ugly as sin)
+ Easily accessible microSD slot.
- Heavier weight compared to 7 inch tablets (same as iPad)
If you don't want to spend more than $250, then the Nook Color is awesome. But for just $100 to $150 more, I think you can get quite a lot more value from a tablet these days.
I would definitely say its worth it. I was originally looking at the Asus transformer for my first tablet but after the ridiculously low stock at launch I settled on the Acer iconia. It was a nice tablet and I liked it a lot but couldn't justify 450 bucks for what's basically a toy and also I like to tinker with things and it looks like that one won't be getting any custom roms for a while at least so I returned it and picked up the nook.
The first night I installed cm7 and haven't looked back since. I was especially glad I got the nook when the Netflix app came out since we can make it work on the nook very easily and I don't think that's possible on the iconia tab at all yet. I've been running cm7 overclocked to 900 MHz with the cm7 settings and it runs well for my uses, ebooks, web browsing, music, and some games. Theres really only two negatives I've noticed, one is the lack of haptic feedback and the other is wifi issues at my work. I'm not sure what causes it but it constantly loses the connection and as soon as I go into wifi settings page it reconnects. It works fine connected to my home network though and also when using my g2 as a wifi hotspot. Overall I really like it and think it is definitely worth the money especially compared to other tablets that's are available.
The only tablet I see which may rival the nook color is the sonicview gtab.

I had what sounds like a similar problem too. Wi-Fi Lock seems to have solved my problems with wifi and CM7.
i think the Nook Color is a great value at under $300. That said, you can also get a G-Tablet for about $299 now fairly easily. Of those two, I'd go with the NC because of its size, display, and build quality. It's not as fast though.
That said, I am no longer an owner of a NC. I just sold it on craigslist an hour ago for $235 with some accessories included. I recently purchased the Acer A500 honeycomb tablet and I love it. I was surprised I'd like the larger size and weight (heaviest tablet...) but it actually feels nice and solid. The speed of the Tegra 2 + 1gb DDR3 Ram is a huge step up from the Nook Color even with root/overclock and lots of tweaking.
Since a few other comparisons have been brought up in here, what do you guys think about the ViewPad7 for $50 more?
I'm on the fence too. Between NC and wifi tab, I can't seem to decide. I was an early adopter; bought NC within 1st week of release but returned it as then there weren't any custom roms etc. is the sammy tab worth $100 more for the hard keys and gps? I would use mostly for browsing, second as a reader. Can anyone care battery life between the two (post rootingNC of course)?

Has anyone spent a good amount of time with both a rooted Nook Color and the Galaxy Tab who can write some impressions on how they compare in regular use? The $350 difference is dictating that I go Nook Color, but it's always fun to hear comparisons before buying...

I have the NC, Archos 70, and VS tablet right now, and the color is by far the best screen.
The VS device lasted all of an hour before I decided that I am returning it tomorrow, it is that bad even with custom roms. The screen is bad, the unit is heavy, and I decided the 7 inch size is my favorite.
The Archos running froyo is very buggy, only has 256mb of ram, and has wifi issues at this point and feels like I could break it by looking at it too hard.
The color is the best display, has plenty of ram, and feels very solid. We just need a good rom and it should fly!

I was wondering more in comparison to the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but that's cool too.

Two of my coworkers got a Tab. It is definitely better than the Nook Color - it's running Android 2.2 out of the box, the screen is as excellent as the Nook's, and it's got 3G, gps, bluetooth, and a camera (if those things are important to you).
It's also snappier as it has a slightly faster chip. It is thicker than the Nook Color though.
The biggest difference is that you can pretty much buy 2 Nook Colors for 1 Tab.
If you want the full Android 2.2 experience and the $300+ price difference is not a factor, then yeah get a Tab.
i only tested a display and i was blown away by the experience. all the goodness of the nook (great screen, sturdy hardware, 512MB of ram) with the performance of the archos 70 (much snappier than the nook-but not as fast as the galaxy).
i'm very much considering returning both the nook and archos 70 and just getting the galaxy tab. i only need one (other) tablet anyways.
The point is, how is the potential of the NC with a custom ROM?
With a fine software many think that the NC will perform almost as good as the Tab...
Time will tell.
I think it will.... Roms do make a HUGE difference with these type of devices. Let's hope someone get one out soon.

I wasn't too impressed with the Galaxy Tab when compared to the Nook Color. I don't need 3G, bluetooth or a camera because my phone has all of that. I've played with the Galaxy Tab in a store here in Finland and it's quite thick as well.
The Nook Color is thinner and than my iPad but with the same resolution screen and more dots per inch.
The cost is another issue. The Galaxy Tab is over 800euro over here yet the Nook Color came to under 300 euro including 23% local import tax and shipping service cost. I would have bought the Galaxy Tab if the price wasn't so ridiculous.

800 euro... that's 1050 USD. Here you pick up the Galaxy at the store for 600 USD, some 450 Euro.
Gotta love the CHEAP US of A!
I think we need to be a bit honest with ourselves here. Let us cut to the chase, the Galaxy Tab is a better device than the NC. It is more capable out of the box because of the hardware it carries, and as good as the Nook Color is, lack of hardware features can never be made up by the best ROM in the world.
This does not mean the Nook Color is a bad device. It is a great device, in its price range.
To me, the Nook is not a competitor to the Galaxy Tab. The Tab is a BMW. The Nook Color is a sturdy Ford, both good - but two different devices that do not compete with each other.
A buyer interested in a Galaxy Tab will not consider a Nook Color (as a Android tablet) just like a Nook Color buyer will not consider a Galaxy Tab. The price differential is just too big.
There is much to like about both devices, but comparing them, IMO, is apples to oranges - and a mismatch from the get-go.
Keep in mind who makes the Tab
Like so many others I heard about the Samsung Behold 2 and how those customers got screwed but got a Samsung Vibrant anyway. And like so many others I found out the GPS is borked. And the battery life is poor. At least I didn't experience the lag problem, but I returned it.
And watched for the not-really-promised GPS fix. Which finally came and...didn't work. I really liked the screen and wanted to like the phone, but if the phone can't do what was advertised up front, forget it.
And Samsung on Android 2.3 on their S9000 series of phones (e.g. Vibrant)? Their statement sounded like "Maybe someday if we feel like it and there is a strong tailwind we might think about it but no promises". Maybe the phone is a dead end, maybe it isn't, but based on Samsung's performance so far, I wouldn't count on it. It doesn't have 2.2 yet. My phone (MT4G) came with it, my wife's (DX) got an OTA.
To me this says the Samsung Tab is absolutely out. You'd have to practically give me one to get me to take it. Same for the Nexus S.
The Nook, right now, is not fully tabletized, but that's a matter of software. It has a fabulous screen and seems reasonable in many ways. It is far cheaper than any of its competition (as a tablet). I find it stylish and I could actually imagine reading books on it (I know, what am I thinking?). And my wife is irate that I'm considering it so soon after she got me an Air.
So, is there a Plex controller that is worthwhile for Android tablets? That'd go a LONG way toward getting approval from the missus.
I agree. Samsung has never supported their devices well, and they still insist on using proprietary cables and connectors on everything. On top of that, they went ahead and did everything I dislike about apple by releasing the galaxy tab at that price. They are not even trying to compete with the Ipad, they are just assuming that everyone who wants an android tablet will shell out the big bucks to buy it, the same way apple fans will shell out the big bucks to buy anything made by apple. I'm sure it's a good device, it's gotten great reviews - I just don't like the way they went about it.
My wife told me after I got the NC that she was going to get me a Tab for Christmas. I'm glad I got the NC, I would have had to return the Tab! Too many features in the Tab that I just won't use. The only thing it has that I wish the NC had, is the slightly faster processor (800MHz vs 1GHz.)
Besides the hardware differences, it's a Samsung. They aren't known for providing updates in a timely manner and support on their devices. Sure, we don't know about the NC's status in that respect, but I also don't really care given it's price point. Whatever the development community does is fine by me!
But as was already said, you aren't comparing apples to oranges, you're comparing apples to a fruit basket. It's got more, it's different, and it's more money. I'm fine with apples.

While we're talking about Samsung's business tactics that leave a sour taste in your mouth, two things come to mind:
- apparently they turned down Google's proposal for them to name the eventual Nexus S the Nexus 2 because "we're not #2 in anything." Wow. Surely someone is making a year-end list of "biggest douchebag quotes of the year" right about now - please note this one.
- I'd sacrifice my first-born if the reason for the delay until "after the holidays" for the wifi-only Tab was because of production delays. Either the carriers threw money at them to delay it, or it's just more profitable for them to sell 3g models, so they delayed it (or both). The irony is, I'd more strongly consider a Tab if a $450 wifi model was available now.
It would be closer if the Nook Color had Bluetooth, that way you could use a Bluetooth GPS, headsets, etc...
...but someone posted in another topic that Bluetooth might be there just "hidden", maybe in a custom ROM ?

The processor chipset (?) is supposed to include bluetooth. It's assumed it wasn't activated due to licensing costs for bluetooth, so it's there, just not used and may be "unlocked" by a rom.
I've both. NC cannot compare to the Galaxy Tab in user experience.
You just get a much better polished experience with the tab on everything. Tab's gpu is almost 10x faster in polygon count. CPU is faster (even with SetCPU set at performance on NC). Everything just works on the Tab.
That said, I am considering returning my Tab because of all the new tablets coming out in a few months, and the price. NC could hold me over for a few months.

Do you know if the hardware GPU is better than the NC or is just based on current software of Tab vs NC? I've done a lot of research into the nook color, but I admit, graphics wise it's still a bit of a mystery to me.

What was the problem with each tablet, individually?
I too haven't had any luck. My first Nookcolor wouldn't turn on or reset after I plugged it in to charge. The second one would randomly reboot, reload or freeze. B&N are sending me a third one. My cousin bought her nookcolor on release date and she has never had to reset or soft reset hers.

Third one - Defective digitizer
Sent from my rooted HTC EVO 4G.
Were you having the digitizer problems while plugged into the charger? This seems to be a common issue that is actually caused by the charger itself. I know you already returned your third Nook but maybe someone else will see this if they're having a similar problem. I have this same issue with my Nook and will be calling customer service to get a replacement shipped out. In the meantime i haven't had the need to use my device while it's charging due to the long battery life.
For those considering changing to a gtablet or archos i can only say that i owned an archos 101 and returned it due to its horrible screen and build quality. I have also used a gtablet and it was quite heavy and also had a very poor screen. However, there's no denying that it has pretty powerful hardware and performs well when you ditch the stock software for a custom rom.

I hear ya, surprised the fanbois insecure in their purchase haven't popped up yet to cry foul though.
Anyways, I'd wait. CES is coming and supposedly alot of new tablets will be demoed with actual release dates not too far out... i.e. I'm not even going to recommend a rooted/custom fw'ed gTab. (It is fast(browses almost as well as my MSI GT725 P8600 2.4GHz/ATI 4850 mobility), but you never know something with a better stock fw might be on the way...)
I'm kind of in the OP's position, as my first NC came OOB w/a borked USB port and I had a b!tch of a time getting them to exchange it. No wonder that B&N are in trouble with that kind of QA & CS... Exchange unit is doing OK now, so I plan to keep it unless something happens to this one before 14d are up, in which case I'm going to have to think hard about another exchange or just flat out return. Their crap CS is making me lean to return as it was the very worst CS experience that I've ever had in my life.
[EDIT]
Do NOT buy the Cruz Craplet. It uses a non-standard MIPS CPU in the SoC unlike every single other recent device that uses ARM based SoCs. Also their reader is just an overpriced white Pandigital Novel. The fws are nearly directly exchangeable.
Archos: beware of 256MB of RAM in those, and their current froyo build underclocks their CPU to 800MHz plus they tooketh away features that were in their 2.1 build... (mainly some codecs that they want you to buy now, or so I gather). The RAM is a limiting factor in app usage and potential further OS upgrades, so I'd look for devices with a minimum of 512MB of RAM onboard. (I'd also REALLY like to see easily user replaceable batteries.... but...)
Notion Ink: I'd wait and see on those guys. More like until they release their next tablet(see if they survive) and see if they fix their crappy warranty & shipping & return policies and/or get into B&M so that you can see/try BEFORE you buy...
[/EDIT]
I went from an Archos 101 to a NC and I definitely second the comment about the ram. 256MB just isn't enough for me - lockups and freezes are common when you do anything interesting with it. My dad ended up the Archos for Christmas for checking sports scores and emails and stuff and he loves it so far.
The latest Archos gen8 firmware allows you to bump the speed back up to 1GHz, so that's not an issue. The A101's screen (TN versus IPS) and touch sensor (tested via fruit ninja) are crap next to the NC's. As far as video playback goes, the A101 runs rings around the poor NC. Everything just played. Lack of bluetooth sucks on the NC, but hopefully "they" will fix that for us soon.
My NC has a single dead pixel smack in the middle of the screen, but it's definitely not worth the hassle of a return.
EDIT: I forgot about the terrible wireless on the A101. As of 2.0.71 firmware WPA2 AES finally works, but it's not as stable as wireless on the NC. On the other hand, the A101 neatly beats the NC on battery life.

i agree wait until CES is done. Lots of Android tabs coming out. It's unfortunate at the problems some are having. I have 2 NC's and no problems. For the money, the NC is hard to beat. I would not get the Galaxy tab as it is overpriced IMHO.
Been followign the CES and pre-CES launch announcements, and I would say hang on til june and get one of the Asus Tablets. They will retail between $399-$499 depending on model (the 7", which includes a capacitve stylus and ap suite to take advantage of it, and the 10" slider models are $499, the 10" tablet that has an optional keyboard dock is $399). The LG tablet is another that is on the horizon that looks very promising.

That and I would never spend that kind of cash on a tablet with a mobile OS. Say what you want, but Android, iOS, WM7 are all still just phone/hand held operating systems.
For the record: first unit had a borked USB port, and the second has 2 defective pixels plus a backlight display defect near the top. No worries! I'm taking the second back to BestBuy and picking up a third on Sunday! I'll keep doing it 'til it's perfect. For $250 it's all that.
Sorry to hear that B&N customer service sucks. Anyway, Walmart is carrying them too now so options are good.

Now with CES behind us but with thoughts of all those new tablets still fresh in our heads, anyone still think a rooted Nookcolor will be able to hold it's own against the tide that's coming.
Anyone with a rooted Nookcolor-will you still buy a tablet this year and if so which one, or will the Nookcolor still do.
I think the price point of the Nookcolor is it's greatest strength now.
I agree for $250, the NC can't be beat. Honeycomb on NC
I do plan on getting a new tab, maybe one of 10.1" running Honeycomb but don't know which one yet.
My opinion is...
The Nook is a book reading device first. Its a make shift tablet second.
It is not really fair to compare it to tablets that are designed to be tablets.
With that said, the newest thing is always around the corner. What is NOT around the corner is the hundreds more dollars for me to spend that these new devices cost as compared to the Nook.
Once the Nook gets a stable and functional Froyo, it will put it a very good advantage for at least the next year with app support.
It will take some time for Tegra2 to build up steam and drop in price. Meanwhile you have all of these older devices/tablets/cellphones still running older systems.
Just because 3.0 is coming up does not mean that all support will stop for the older devices. Developers would be foolish to stop supporting the older builds.
So, the answer for me is YES, the Nook is a great buy at this moment in time.
I have to agree with the price point being the NC's largest draw and strength. For $250 you can't get a better piece of hardware. Once we can get honeycomb (and by we I mean you people smarter than myself) on the NC we'll be flying high.
From what I have read, which may be BS, honeycomb will require dual processors to function properly, so I doubt nook color can handle it.

There's always something "better" available "real soon now". I'd have to check, but none of the CES announcements included either a price for the device or a release date. Heck, the Adam took almost a year from CES to release, and even then it had a very limited release and still hasn't shipped. But you can go over to B&N and pick up a NC right now.
There is no minimum processor requirement for Honeycomb.

Oh, and if you don't know who Dan Morrill is...

I just picked up a Nook Color for $180 from CL...but even at full price I didn't see anything that blew me away from CES. Sure the newer tablets will have better CPUs etc. but I doubt they will have the Screen quality of the NC at this price-point. For me what sold me on the NC is the ability to Root it, make it a very functional tablet (even if so claim its a book reader first, I think it makes an amazing tablet). I am one of the few that do not need a webcam etc. And let's not forget the amazing Screen quality!
CES Shows some really awesome looking devices but the market at the moment is pricing everything retardedly high. For the moment the $250 NC is the best bang for the buck for a simple Tablet. And I do fully expect to see a Honeycomb port in due time.
Untill the market gets saturated with actually good devices around the $300 price point and not the $499 point, (Especially the 3G only devices?! Not everyone wants or needs 3G!).
From my viewpoint:
The OS is sometimes the most expensive part of buying a PC/tablet. I would expect with the fact that Android is open, costs for these devices would be driven down significantly. However, the new crop of Android tablets are up there with Win OS tablets (almost), yet don't have a full featured OS.
I agree with spikey911 that this is an ereader first, Android tablet second. To me, having it run android apps is a benefit, not the primary reason I got it.
I would love a dual core or a Tegra 2 tablet. Would I pay more than $300 for one? Absolutely not. By the time that comes down in price, the next crop of the "greatest" comes out.
The only way I would upgrade to different tablet is if/when the Lenovo LePad/U1 comes down in price. Then I could chuck the NC and my Core 2 duo netbook.

That's the same thing i thought, but then how to you explain the galaxy tab? 600 bucks for what? Where they price gouging? I picked the nook color because the ability to root and the build quality was outstanding. Closest to that of the iPad. With the new crop of devices coming they are not bringing anything new, dual core yay but other than that what else. For those with nooks is 4-500 dollars worth a larger screen? What can you do on those that you cant do on the nook color? Also nook is still on 2.1 so with froyo there should be a slight speed increase.
Dont think anything from CES was mind blowing and would make me considering giving up my nook.
Outside of Android, Gigabyte just announced a reasonably nice Win7 Tablet with a N550 (duel core) and even a 320G HD supposidly aimed at the sub $300 market. If so with a reasonable capacitive screen it would be one of the first reasonable Win7 Tablets. For a device that has netbook specs it may be the first to finally get it that they need to be priced reasonable for the reasonable specs. Touchscreen replacement for a keyboard should not cost $200 more.
I'm still waiting patiently for the NC with 2G/3G... Anyone know when it will be out?

I think that we are seeing the NC at razor thin markup (almost cost) due to the "razor/razor blades" marketing model that ebooks use. B&N expect to make all their money on book sales, not the hardware. Until we have a Tegra2 KindleIV to compare to, I doubt we'll know for sure
I'm not looking for my Nook to replace my laptop. The thing that got me is the performance/price and the big thing: not having a data plan. I don't understand who has the money to buy a $500 device and then pay $25-50/month for 24 months. I can buy a really nice laptop for $1100-1700.
Homer
For me the NC is a tablet first & an ereader second! At least that's the way I use it. IMO it has enough going on hardware wise that the only time that it is an ereader first, is that period of time between opening the box & rooting it! Just because it doesn't have a few hard keys, camera or GPS & USB host doesn't mean it is not a viable tablet. Actually, a rooted NC has more tablet functions than it does ereader functions. I am very happy with the NC without these features, as that kept the price where I could afford it. With it competing in the ereader market, B&N had to price it accordingly. If it had been competing as a tablet, it could have demanded a much higher price. I was not looking for a laptop replacement, just a more portable connected device that doesn't require a data contract.
Cheers,
kev
Best tablet for under $300. Once Froyo is successfully ported and BT able kernel it will be even better. There is no way you will find another 7" tablet with capacitance screen, 1024x600 res, 512MB RAM, 8GB Internal Storage for anywhere near this price. B&N is selling them at a low price to get people to buy their ebooks.

I am not convinced that not having some pretty strong minimum hardware specs is a good thing. Microsoft was pretty smart by setting the bar high on their Win Phone 7 units. I think the Android community would benefit from having some specs that ensure that a tablet or phone will perform fast and smooth. You know that Apple will increase their specs for the next iPad and it will suck if honeycomb runs poorly on previous gen tablets.
Alright so here's the deal....
I've had this Nook Color for a long time but i l've realized it's become more of a toy to tinker with instead of a tablet. I was constantly working on it instead of using it as a tablet. So i gave up and posted it on Ebay and was going to sell it but now i've installed the latest phiremod and... i feel like my nook is finally there. Video is actually worth a damn and it's all smooth. What would you guys do? How does the tab compare now? Still a little smoother but not much or.... all opinions welcome. Sorry for punctuation, typing on nook color.
Edited for... everything.
I think you should keep it. I used it just to experiment when I was runing froyo but now I 'm using the latest CM7 (rc4) and I 'm now really using it as a tablet [browsing, reading, some games and the occasional navigation]. It's the perfect tablet for the money I paid.
The cpu speed is equal or better if you use the overclock kernel, the graphics are equal now, the operating system is better cuz it can run gingerbread where the galaxy is just froyo. All in all for 250 bucks youre way way better off with the nook.. and its getting better everyday with the cm7 nightlies.

Hi,
no, they aren't. The galaxy has a newer, more advanced graphic chipset. It's been reported to play almost any video you throw at it, while the nook has significant limitations.

I think the Galaxy can do 720p videos (no need to reencode, can stream from your main system or whatever.)
I also think the bluetooth has a longer range, and it has cameras? It's good stuff, but it's also more expensive.

Which one? The one I see is like $1100?
If you have $1100 to spend, that certainly isn't a bad way to spend it if you want the rugged reliability of the SSD storage.
I also like the $1100 IBM/Lenova Thinkpad convertable. It has better stats and bigger storage, but it uses a normal type of harddrive.

Showing up online for $400 for 16GB and $500 for 32GB.
We all have different requirements but to me the only real competition to a rooted Nook Color right now is the Galaxy Tab. Anything bigger than 8" is in laptop/netbook size territory, which just is not as portable.
And the price of a Galaxy Tab is now in NC territory although you have monthly contract charges for 2 years...
The extra cost involved with the contract, or buying one outright, will keep me happily using an NC. When a 7" tablet with significantly better specs and quality becomes available in the same price range- >$250 then I may consider it.
Right now there is nothing.
But if the size doesn't bother you- well, I have no input really because I haven't seen ANY 10" tablet I would buy.
Thanks for all the replies so far guys. Also sorry for the quality of that post last night. I was using NC and was too tired to really want to fix it. Anyways...
I agree that 7" is just the right size. The IPad is great and all but it's so bulky. That's why it's between this and the Galaxy Tab. I'm still not sure. I really do like this a lot and it's actually usable since installing RC4 version of Phiremod. Just want something where everything is smooth and works perfectly. Before, the argument couldn't be made that the nook color was all that smooth but it's worlds better now. Thanks for all your input guys.
Ok, here is my next question then, since we agree on the 7" size:
What os are you using?
Stock rooted?
Froyo?
Honeycomb?
CyanogenMod7?
I have gone through all of the above to one degree or another, HC for the shortest time due to the issues since source is not out.
Once CM7 was available I have not even read a thread about another.
It may still be in the nightly/RC stage, but CM7 is extremely good as it is and is in very active development to complete making things perfect.
One of the issues we all have with the NC- lack of hard buttons- even has a project at the "feature freeze" point of bug fixes before release- Tablet Tweaks.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002000
Do us both a favor and at least try it before you spend money.
You may decide that you don't need to.
(Note: if you are already running CM7 then ignore my post. )
Having seen what even a stock rooted Android 2.1 Nook Color can do, I wouldn't spend money on another 7" tablet. I might buy a 10" Honeycomb tablet like the XOOM if the prices come down for use at home where the extra screen real-estate outweighs the decreased portability. But the Nook Color would still be the device I take with me when I'm leaving home.

It's not double, its $150 more. Comparing it to the 32GB model isn't fair.
You gain a bigger screen (debatable if it's worth it- but for me- typing a little on a 7" screen would be an awkward size, 10" makes it better). And much more power... And bluetooth and all that jazz. With the ability to run 3.0 natively.
Worth $150, up to you.
Take the $300 GTablet. No IPS screen. Is $100 for an IPS screen running 3.0 worth $100? I think so.
Is it worth $150 more than the NC? That's more debatable I think, because you already have a IPS screen. The only thing lacking is 3.0 and the power.
Now....... If the keyboard is included in that $400 price: hands-down, $150 for a tablet you can attach a keyboard to is a freaking no-brainer... The Eee Pad Transformer kills the NC.
But if the keyboard is optional, it's up for debate.
Anytime I've seen the Eee Pad Transformer listed accidentally, it always seems to have the keyboard included. But other times, it seems like it might be an optional thing you buy extra. Weather or not the keyboard is part of that $400 is a huge thing, in my opinion.
If it is, not only does it murder the competition in the tablet market, it'll also murder the competition in the netbook market.
I'm waiting for release (rumored to be April 9) and pricing, and to see if the keyboard is included or not. That Eee Pad Transformer could viably be, a laptop replacement. 16 hours of battery life is awesome. The ability to also use it as a tablet is a huge plus as well.
The ONLY thing- I would want it to be able to do: is boot Windows (so I can use full Office and Windows programs). If I could make it do that: this is an awesome device. Why?
1) Light, long lasting netbook with some power
2) Full Windows apps (stream to 360, etc)
3) Tablet PC for light browsing or on the move
One device to rule them all, one device to bind them......

Of course but the problem is... The NC doesn't have that hardware configuration, lol.
I'm guessing, since it just released 4.5 months ago, we won't see a NC until this fall again. I love the fact B&N isn't trying to crush the open source community on it so I've got hope the next one will be the same way. They need to keep the cost cheap- I think they realize (especially with the upcoming update) they've nailed the cost/feature ratio. Hopefully they don't think, "It's a tablet now, let's charge more" on the NC2.
I'll say keep it and buy better tablet down the road.
I'm really interested in the Asus Transformer ($400 for 16GB) but I'll keep my Nook Color.
If you guys want to keep the 7" factor, but gain powerful hardware, wait for this to release stateside.

But for the same price (actually cheaper)... the Asus 10" gives you IPS, twice the RAM, twice the space...

Ok, then how is $150 more a cheaper price?
Really i just found out about the NC dev work which suprised the heck out of me! Running cm7 and miui(my favorites roms) and the price makes me want to consider getting into the tab game! But is it to late to buy a NC while other tablets are coming out now? I want to replace the things i do on my android phone so i can have more battery life:
Games- fifa, pes, etc
internet, youtube
And watching movies
Bluetooth files to different devices AND bluetooth keyboard, mouse, etc.(Does the NC has bluetooth?)
Now the NC will replaces buying magazines and books and just buying on the NC?
But if there are any tablets coming out that will do the same or better please let me know? Thanks for your time!
To be honest, while the nook is the best value tablet on the market still, it probably doesn't suit your needs that well. Even with the latest CM7 video leaves something to be desired. Youtube for me takes far too long to buffer, and once it does the quality leaves something to be desired. (On the same connection my computer needs no buffering for HD) The other problem for video playback is that the speaker on the Nook is rather weak. If you plan on watching videos without headphones it's probably better to go with another tablet. Bluetooth works, as well as USB host, so a keyboard is no problem.
Thanks for the info. I really like the NC cause of the price and the development makes me want it even more! But i been watching youtube video reviews and everybody compares it to the galaxy tab or the ipad and it hold it own pretty well! Acer Iconia Tab Looks nice as well but for almost 500 for that not really looking to spend that much for one.
Bluetooth is enabled with CM7 and works really well. I've watched some youtube and ripped movies, and they're not bad. Netflix looks good too. I'm not sure if it depends on the source quality or what. Admittedly, the speaker volume is pretty low, even with tweaking it. I really haven't had much experience with other tablets, but I'm pretty satisfied. Considering you can get an NC for under $200 on various sales, it's still pretty hard to beat.
honestly, with the way prices are going for 10in honeycomb tablets, id just pick up one of those. the Asus transformer is going for between 250-300.

The Nook has it's advantages, its size and weight are perfect for long use in the hand and it has a very active hacking community. I absolutely love my Nook with CM7, the tablet tweaks are a godsend. I'd say at the price there is no tablet close to the Nook.

I notice typical lag in the browser -- by typical I mean it's the same as on my phone or even sometimes the laptop, depending on the site. It's completely usable for most things. I personally usually use Dolphin Browser most of the time. I felt the same way... I couldn't justify a tablet over $250 or so.

I have lag with the default browser, just typical though. I prefer Opera Mobile as it fits the nook's screen perfectly and it feels as smooth as a desktop browser. I can even watch 480p videos INSIDE of the browser.

Depends on what you want.
We have both the ipad2 and the nc, and I find myself using the nc more than the ipad2, probable because I like to tweak stuff. Watched some netflix movies w/o much trouble, surfs fine.
My 2 cents.
I just got an NC about 3 weeks ago to read books/magazines/comics and do some light surfing/gaming/watching movies.
You are far from being late in the game - I would still highly recommend an NC over any other option out currently. Mostly because I think anything larger than 7" is unusable. The NC is the perfect size for my needs.
With the price of the Nook at $169, you can't beat the price for an Android tablet. Just ordered one (via my cousin who lives in the States), and I plan to run CM7, along with all the other goodies. This way, I don't have to worry too much if I give it to my 7 yr-old to watch her movies on long rides ...
I think the price point is irresistible !
Comparing the two best bang-4-buck tablets, IMO
I purchased a Viewsonic G tablet last October.
You can find one for $249 - $279 on Woot.com every now & then, or on eBay for $299.
The battery is going out, and there is no aftermarket replacement, so I have to wipe all my data and send it in for repair.
To tide me over while waiting for the G tab, I searched for a 7" tablet that had an aftermarket replacement battery available so I can replace it myself.
This led me to the Nook, which I purchased refurb Aug 2 for $180 from 1saleaday.com (lucky me, it was the deal of the day).
Together with a 16gb flash card for under $25...http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001F7AJKI
and CM7, I'm really happy with the Nook.
In fact, I just bought another refurb for my girlfriend through eBay/1saleaday.
BTW, it's still available for $180...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Barnes-Nobl...US_Tablets&hash=item2eb6f2e551#ht_2556wt_1344
Things change constantly, but to me, these two tablets are the best bang for the buck right now.
Having used both, I find the 7" screen on the Nook better for hand held portability, but the 10" Gtab better for use at a table or desk using a stand.
Comparing performance, even though the Gtab has a Tegra 2 processor, the Nook seems snappier browsing the net with Dolphin Mini running on CM7, vs the Gtab running Dolphin HD on Vegan 5.1 rom.
The big difference is videos. Both have 1024 x 600 screens. The Nook has a stuttering problem with streaming/rendering flash videos in HD where the Gtab handles this with ease. BTW, the screen on the nook looks better than the Gtab which has limited viewing angles.
Netflix is fine on both.
I can't get cifs manager to work on the Nook, where it works fine on the Gtab from a Win7 media server.
Games like Plants vs. Zombies, and non-tegra 2 optimized games run the same on both.
