OK, this is probably gonna sound really really dumb, but are Odin/Heimdall the official Samsung flashing tools or are they community made? And if they aren't, may I ask how Samsung flash roms onto their devices?
Hemidall is community made, odin is leaked from samsung

Hi folks,
This is a noob question. I am unable to find any post related to stock Froyo for Galaxy S. Is something like this out yet ?
By stock I mean, Android as Google release it, without any reseller trash on it.
Thanks in advance
there is no froyo for SGS yet, at least not officially
much less a stock froyo
there are tons of phone killing Beta froyos if you feel brave
Thanks for letting me know. I am not confident yet in any beta out there, although a lot of phones are using it without any issue...
Hoping that stock will be released soon.
Thanks
It won't (be released soon).
Currently there are community efforts going on to try and get stock 2.1 run on the SGS but they still have a way to go.
After that, once samsung releases the sources for 2.2 they can start trying to get a stock 2.2 running. They have to wait for Samsung because of drivers and such.
Hoping that what they've learned from 2.1 can largely be reused there's a good chance a stock/AOSP 2.2 ROM could make it's way relatively fast to the SGS but for now, don't hold your breath.

I really don't think it can ever be called stock. All releases have to be configured and customised to the platform they are running on. With Linux or Windows it is all on the disk and web server, drivers etc etc. You cannot do this with phone firmware as the download would be huge.
And just like Windows or Linux there are some stock programs that each will install. So what can we call "stock"? Even the Nexux 2.2 has to be configured to it.
By stock/vanilla Android, I meant of course a modified one that includes drivers for SGS, but does not include any customer UI made by Samsung.
So stock UI, no additional garbage (iPhone garbage style in SGS case) would be what I really need to see on my phone.
Or maybe a faster way for this is to modify current Samsung ROM and remove TW and Samsung's apps.
Thanks

Have a look in the Dev threads. There are several Roms that do that.
Hi Tehpriest,
Can you route me to a ROM mentioned by you ? I searched but in vane... no result.
Thanks
+1. Have been seeking a stock UI-based ROM for i9000T for a while now, with no luck.
Cheers!
There seems to now be some skilled developers starting to get Cyanogen 6 (a vanilla version of Froyo) onto the Galaxy S. Assuming they get it running - which I think is likely when Samsung release the source for their spin on Froyo - it will take a while before it's stable and fully featured.
There's a steep learning curve for working out how to backup then flash your phone with a new rom. It took me three days to go through forum posts working it out, and I've now got a beta version of Froyo working fine. My advice is to get Samsung's official upgrade Froyo when it's out and wait until the devs get a chance to get something better running.
Also, use 'Launcher pro' from the market to replace Samsung's launcher, which makes things a whole lot more familiar.
official froyo is out, the wait should be shorter now
I am hoping too for this. I really like to benefit of OOB Android experience as Galaxy S is my first android phone.
Looking forward to see if it... hopefully soon.
wasnt CyanogenMod working on a release for the galaxy s?
Hi... i've been with my Captivate for like a month now, done some reading, even tried some custom roms like cognition!
Since i live in Brasil, i would like now to try the ROM's from the Galaxy S that is sold here.
I've read somewhere that the carriers from Brasil which sells the Galaxy S have just released the Froyo version and some already have upgraded and are enjoying it.
So, based on that i would like to know:
1) Can i try their ROM's ? I ask because our Galaxy S (the one from Brasil) has Digital TV... Dunno if this could cause a issue with the kernel.
2) If so, how exactly do i do it? Do i flash a spare Kernel first, then flash the ROM?
I've been checking I9000 reoriented v2.2.1 12.10.2010 topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808286
but there's no information on how to proceed with installation.
Thanks
Hi,
I am interested in FM radio experimentation on the Galaxy S. for that, I have followed the CM7 GB team hacksung build instructions and the build has gone thru fine. I have obtained an update.zip file.
Is this all I need for a samsung galaxy S?
I find this quite different as I am mostly an HTC phone developer and the mechanisms of flashing etc seem very different here.

any ideas? I really dont want to brick my phone by trying out these builds without proper information.

As the post says... I have a friend coming over tonight with an i9000 and I was wondering if I could use the same bootloader's I used to flash my captivate. I know the two phones are super similar hardware but I wasn't sure and I dont want to brick his phone flashing 2.3 bootloaders from my phone. I couldn't find any threads in the i9000 forums about i9000 specific bootloaders.
Thanks!
Why would you want to do that? You could just flash one from i9000 section.....

I was just wondering how "tight" the two phones actually are. Will the captivate i9000 GB bootloaders work? that is my biggest concern because an incorrect BL flash would be a disaster.
I would think so, but DO NOT flash them.... Why risk bad bootloaders? Thats 1 easy ticket to hard brick. Framework wise they are similar, as long as you change the kernel (i9000 ports to i897 have to be reorientated) and some files on the rom itself have to be modified.
Thats what I figured. Do you own either phone. Really I'm just looking for the proper bootloader to flash on his phone so we/he can go ROM dancing to find something he likes. I know on my captivate I flashed the 2.3 BL last may and havent had to touch a BL since. I'm using cm9 ics at the moment. Is there a flash and forget BL for the i9000?
I would assume so, though apart from a few rom, kernel threads for ICS I haven't messed alot over there. I own i897 Don't work much with i9000's. Not many ppl own them here.
There are definitely threads with I9000 bootloaders in the I9000 section. Because there are threads in the captivate section with I9000 bootloaders... that is because the I9k got official gb before even a leak came out for the cappy. So back then, if you wanted gb(well touchwiz gb and not cm7) then you had to have the i9k boots.
Just look in the Dec section of the i9k I promise they are there.
Don't flash captivate anything on I9k
HI guys,
First of all great to be part of this community. This is my first Android phone after being an IOS user since the original iphone. I just like change so decided to jump on the android wagon. i gotta say so far i love it i have HC on the 7plus tab and my note is on GB 2.3.6 xxla4a and i think its a saudi phone n700jpla1 kernel. Now here's the deal the note is new i didnt change anything so not rooted its unloccked though, now i want to install stock ics or the galaxy sIII rom.
Before you start bashing, i read a lot but it is so confusing i don't wanna mess up the phone. I just want the easiest way to flash stock stable ics build and root it. the IOS was very limited you only had to jailbreak and there was a site with all tutorials to do it. With android there are so many possibilities from what i read (custom roms and dif kernels) yet it's not all in one place.
So to sum it up if a kind soul can help me out i'll be very grateful.
Thanks
Please note thing first - You cannot flash a Galaxy SIII Rom on to the Note. You cannot flash ROMs of any other devices on the Galaxy Note. (You can try but that kind of an exercise would brick your phone instantly). Different phones have different ROM structures which are not interchangeable. In fact you have to ensure that you only flash ROMs for your particular model which is GT-N7000.
and if you want stock ICS better to wait for stable version
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646088
The first post should help you get clarity on how to install ICS (specifically the LPY version) and root it.
BTW it would be advisable to stay with GB for now. There is a bug with the all ICS versions so far that might cause a fully bricked phone. Read about it in the stickied posts in the development section.
Thanks for the replies you just confirmed what i was afraid. i'll just stick to GB for now until the update rolls out on my phone evetnough i'm not sure i will get one soon. lastly i'm getting the s3 when it comes out.Going all in with Samsung
