Not sure if everyone here has heard the news from Google's I/O, but they have announced that Google is setting a guideline for updates to phones, and many companies have agreed to give timely updates to their phones for at least 18 months from release.
LG is one of them so this is good news and will most likely mean that our phones will live to see an official Ice Cream Sandwich build
I would be getting it from CM regardless
Does anyone know whether this agreement is retroactive though? Might not include the *2X
First, LG agreed to that terms AFTER the O2X release, so that phone isn't concerned.
Second, they add "if hardware can follow", which is the magical sentence for manufacturer to explain why, finally there will be no update (even if that's total bullsh*t).
Bottom line is, nothing new, still the same.
But, it doen't mean we won't have ice cream Sandwich either
Let's hope for it.
Even though the news are good, Google making some pressure to manufacturers develop android updates, thing is that ice cream is said by Google to be released Q4 2011...hmph, how long for LG2X to have IC? Q2 2012?

It's not so stupid because this could be the excuse for LG to decide to stop ice cream on the 2x like they did with optimus chic: the 01 will be upgraded to gingerbread while the chic (that has similar hardware) will not. It's just commercial strategy.

I'm a CM7 user as well, coming from Nexus S to Optimus 2x and I would say the same only after we got a stable mod. I'm using Nightly #23 right now and it's great... but far from a beast ATM. Let's remember about bluetooth audio problems, no HDMI, 1080p video recording or FM Radio for instance. Nightly CM7 it's already great, but there's a lot of little things to be fixed.
Unexperienced users should keep away for now, is called Nightly and experimental version after-all.

We all know it was delayed, and I think more and more people know it won't come at all.

Froyo -> Gingerbread upgrade is not all that big. Most of you won't even know its running gingerbread vs froyo. Not sure what the big deal is.
its not about the software update, we have CM7 for that.
Its about the kernel update that we want from gingerbread.
And also, are you kidding? "most of you want know the difference" ? where do you think you are? this is XDA why do you think where here?

Pretty sure most of the people *****ing about it want it for the sake of having the number "2.3" written on the version screen as oppose to "2.2.2". What will gingerbread let you do that you can't do now?
If you're having issues with the phone (reboots/freezes etc) then fair enough otherwise just chill. It's just a phone.
I had a HTC Legend before Optimus 2X. And when the stable cm7 rom was running in my phone it was WAY faster then with any stable custom Froyo-rom. And 2.3 looks very nice. 2.3 also has the Screen-off animation, and a function to select text in messages and on webpages to easier copy, edit or delete parts.
Thats what I can remember I miss atm..

I manage live wallpaper, fair usage on wifi, 3g and 3 hours a day audiobook ( yes works tough going lol )baseband/rij 725 and she lasts a day no problem ........ if you think thats bad you should try my wifes iphone 3gs!!!
edit:- lcd brightness is also up full tilt
edit again.... why doesnt lg/htc/etc etc hire the cm devs? as far as im aware they dont get paid much if anything other than the odd donation and a new phone here and there for a hell of a lot of work.... surely if anyone should be doing the official roms its people like them who love their work?
Hi all,
I am not very sure if this phone will really support ICS. Due to low amount of RAM, will it really be a kind of experience to have ICS in this phone?
Can anyone shed some light on this?
I am sick of waiting for GB upgrade for this phone, and looking forward for some of the XDA developers to bring up ICS for this phone, only if its hardware supports it (having dual core proccy with just 512mb ram is really a big bottleneck)

Sony has already promised to deliver ICS for the Xperia Arc, which has 512MB, so I don't think RAM is a problem.
However, I think the REAL reason LG has been dragging their feet with GB for O2X is that they signed an agreement with Google to support their phones with new software for 18 months after release. If they had released GB earlier, they'd pretty much have to release ICS as well.
By releasing GB this late, they can simply claim there is not enough time to implement it for O2X.
So, can O2X run ICS? Most likely yes.
Will we get it? Most likely no.
The O2X came out before that agreement saw light of day, so probably isn't included in it.
I just hope that arcee will bring us the best ICS rom possible .. I dont care about LG

I belive there isn't much ram on sgs to run ICS
And anyway, we have CyanogenMod. It will surely be updated to ICS.
One way or another we will get it.
How relatively well it will run on our device is another matter.

Totally agreed. There is hardly even enough ram for gingerbread to run as smoothly as froyo.
Android developers claimed today that ics is lighter and snappier. So i guess that means it will require less ram then gb. Its newer version so it is obvious they tried to make it lighter.

Will it be ported over and have a good working rom or will our poor little droid just not be able to handle it?
Google says the requirements are about the same for Gingerbread, but from what I have read, Google says things like that even when the new version needs more.
I am sure someone will get it running and then tweak it to heck.
When the source is released to AOSP, I'm sure the CyanogenMod team will attempt a port. And if CM9 drops support for the D1, someone else will more than likely port it. If not, I might take a shot
I guess we'll find out when it hits AOSP, won't we?
Even if that means waiting until the first official ICS devices are out, I'm sure there's enough demand to get people to start a port.
OTOH, I'm not responsible if you die from holding your breath Even though I personally don't see a reason to upgrade hardware just to get ICS - which IMO is an evolutionary update - there's no guarantee you'll get D1 support on ICS even from this wonderful community.
I guess we're lucky we can run CyanogenMod at all... The future doesn't look bright for Motorola or Android, especially considering Microsoft's Android extortion campaign. Well crap, I'm getting off topic
We might get a CM port. However, I think some of the features are going to be stripped in order to prevent performance from hindering.
We going to get Ice cream dont worry cyano never failed to update stock phones and nexus one will get it without google too!

Damn! This sucks! I might just leave it on gingerbread, since I have an HD2 as my main device. However, most of the AOSP GB for the Droid are like 70 ish MB,[ like the .zip file] so maybe ICS won't be much larger if it's stripped down of unneccessary stuff. But then there might not be much internal space left for apps.... Ugh!

Yes yes I know it's a forum. But it seems like half the threads in this section is about being upset that we don't have GB or ICS and "I hate this phone!"
If y'all are that unhappy, call AT&T and get a different phone. I think all new phones are under a year long warranty. And just call 'em and tell 'em the phone is shutting down and rebooting randomly.
As for me, I have a couple upgrades open and could trade this phone in if I wanted. But, eh, I'd just rather wait until we get some quad core phones out. Orrrrr...AT&T gets the Galaxy Note. A bigger screen would be sweet.

Really? Rooted rom or OTA? Cause my buddies is still on 1.6, and my brothers LG Vortex is on something similar. I doubt these phones have had support for a long time now. To claim any phone will have carrier OTA support a year from now seems like a shot in the dark. New phones are coming out every day and to expect more than one sizable update at this point seems preposterous.

My buddy bought an Atrix and was unhappy with the phone entirely for a week until he got GB that changed his opinion completely. I was about to buy an Atrix when I heard about this phone and decided to wait. I (not so) secretly hoped that all the delays meant we were getting GB on launch and pray to the Android gods every night for GB. I had hoped we got it within a month of release at the latest. I'm not sure anyone expected such a long delay for it. I quite like the phone (size and 3D) but am very frustrated by the battery, constant reboots, freezing, ect. I shouldn't have to depend on a 3rd party app (Juice Defender) to block my phone from using the internet just to get it through the day with minimal to no use, and another app (Watchdog) to stop the "Suspend" command from spooling up my processor to full capacity resulting in chain reboots till my phone can get a grip on it OS.
I love my phone, hate all the complaining about it, but really can't blame everyone for doing it. Starting new threads to do it and ****ting up every new thread posted with complaints is getting old but it's to be expected.
I am impatiently waiting the 2.3 update. Unlike most thrill 4g users, i have not experienced the random reboots, but like some users i have been experiencing the wifi with a mind of it's own. i am well beyond my return date, so looks like i am stuck with it...
