Why should we move apps to sd ? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So everytime you flash, you most likely have to use titanium to restore all apps. And I have about 40apps movable to the sd card.
I use 'app to sd free' which makes me click move to sd so many times and it takes a lot of time. plus I flash a lot so it really makes me sort of mad...
Now my question is why do we need to move it to sd? Is it simply for more space?.
I have a lot of leftover storage so is it necessary for me to move my apps to sd? Does it do anything else?
Or is there an app that moves everything with one click?
Sent from my Galaxy S captivate

Moving to sd is just more space for apps, more than the 2gb or so where they are normally installed. That's it.
Idk about any other apps to move in one click, all of mine are still in the normal place.

moving to SD is impemented wrong on the cappy IMO, goes to external SD instead of internal SD, on boot it scans that SD last and will lag the whole system until its finished scanning on most launchers.
and moving to SD is better on devices that dont have 2 GB internal storage
just not worth it for us.

Not worth for a device like Captivate that has a huge storage space

[Q] Moving Apps form Galaxy to internal SD is possible?

Hi I have upgraded my Galaxy S to Froyo with "official" firmware, everything is running ok, I also installed the OneClick LagFix (this change my quadrant from 892 to 1915) but now I only have 400Mb free in the phone memory, I would like to move some apps to the SD but I get the following error "Error moving app. There is not enough memory" (Possible this is not the correct message, i get this message in spanish )
I dont have a external SD, but I have 14Gb free in the internal SD, is not possible move apps to this memory?
Thx in advance
install Froyo, then you can run apps from External SD

yes, but all the apps needs to be re-installed and select External SD during install
or you can force them to External and hope it works with those 3rd party programs that moves apps to External SD
Thx AllGamers, I would like to install in the internal SD partition that have 14Gb free, because I donĀ“t have external SD
Thx in advance
there are tons of 3rd party apps to choose from that helps you manage where you want your apps to go, check these out:

This Apps runs OK only if you have a External SD, but I'd like to move to internal SD in Galaxy S
APPs into external SD card
I've a question, is possible to install the apps into the external microSD card?
I know that Froyo permit to do it but only into the internale SD card and i want to use the external one (i've bought a 32Gb for it!!)
Have you any solution?
Thank you!!
I've tried to send my apps to the internal sd card but whenever I click move to sd card it tells me I havnt got enough memory so I thought they go on the externel sd card?

I too have a 32Gb card installed.
You can move the apps and there are a number of 3rd party apps that will do this for you quickly or you can do it from settings in managing the applications. I found that this was not the space saving solution that I thought it would be.
It is the data that needs to be moved, e.g., DoggCatcher is my news reader and it had about 3Gb worth of data. Moving the app didn't save any space but using the setting in the program to move the data did the trick. Play around with moving a couple of apps and see what you get and check to see if the app will allow you to move the data to a new location.
Some apps simply stock pile a lot of data. My eBook program, Audible which I can't do without is another one - over 1.5Gb. I'll contact Audible about this one.
some times when you check on sites like AppsBrain
it will tell you if the App is App2SD compatible
meaning it can be isntall to SD also data store on SD
as mpierce said, it's pretty useless to force a program to SD, meanwhile the heavy stuff remains in the phone internals

Can everyone please read before replying?? He wants to move his apps to the INTERNAL SD (so do I) and NOT the external SD. This is not possible as far as I'm concerned. Got the same error as luishchorradas.

Hi
actually u cannot move ur apps to the internal sd card as internal sd card (16 gb) is only meant for media (videos, songs etc.) and if u want more 16gb for ur apps u will hv to put an external sd card (galaxy s supports 16gb) and ya if u move to sd it will move to external sd card.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. But I don't believe "move to SD" moves anything to the external SD card. The apps move to the internal SD card. Yes unmounting the SD card disables apps, but if you browse through the internal card, you'll still see them sitting there.

sorry for necro'ing but it does indeed move it to the external SD, i've tried moving a couple apps with my Galaxy S to the, as it says, "move to USB memory" but as i check the free memory, it used the external SD memory, not the internal.

[Q] apps2sd whats the downside of running the apps from sd card

samsung galaxy SL-GT-I9003, running froyo 2.2.1
Since froyo allows moving apps2sd I have got a sandisk 32gb class 4 micro sd card & wonder if there is any downside to run an app from the sd card?
Should I partition the sd card for my data & apps separately?
If we update to a new ROM or firmware, and the APPs are on the SD Card do we have need to back up APPs ever again?
all my apps are on my sd card, there isnt really a downside, you dont need to make a partition.
The only thing is. if you accidently format your sd card, your apps will go. it saves memory on the phones internal card, allowing for a quicker response.
Just be sure to make a backup with titanium backup.
I do a backup every week, because im a constant flasher, but you can just make a backup and store it on your pc, just to be safe.
Flashing a new rom wont delete your apps unless you do a WIPE version or do it thru Odin. but if you do flash a new rom just make a backup anyway it only takes 5 mins.

so you mean to say the apps are on the external card but each application save its cache on internal phone sd card.
There are some apps that although you can move them to SD do not work properly when you do. Among these are many home screen widgets and some live wallpapers.
Oh I didnt know that, good I will keep that in mind.

Yes i forgot to mention that, but the ones you want on your homescreen like live wallpapers, music player whatever just leave on internal.
And yes i think the cache (or something like that) is saved to the internal, because when i remove my sd card, my apps still show but just wont launch....
Read many other post & checked my external sd card it does not have any of the moved apps, instead apps2sd moves the files to internal sd only.
So wondering whats the real use of apps2sd when you have limited internal sd space in my case only 1.51gb, I thought it is moving the apps to external sd which is 32 gb card I bought for this purpose only.
My phone shows 181mb left only.

Apps2sd - internal sd? why the hell not?

now to start for reference i may use the following terms
internal storage
internal SD
external SD
please note the difference.
This is also referencing the "official android" apps2sd as well as the other ones i have looked at.
in case you dont know any of the apps to SD methods have 1 goal:
to remove apps from the internal memory to an SD card, allowing more apps to be installed on systems.
most android devices dont have an internal SD, because of this the external SD is the normal place to store Apps to the SD card.
This is also where it stores any extra downloaded files (in case of large games) or user accessible files for apps (docs, themes, game roms, backups, config files) on phones without internal SD.
(All those folders that show up on your internal SD on a captivate.)
Now.... the captivate HAS an internal SD.
As far as i am concerned this was only half implemented correct.
THEY DID CORRECTLY now have the app downloaded files, and user interactive files i mentioned above moved to the internal SD.
THEY DIDNT (IMO) move Apps2sd, to the internal SD where it would make more sense.
- having apps on the any SD causes lag at boot, made further worse on the captivate because it mounts the internal SD, and scans it before it mounts the external SD and scans it, and this is where the apps are!
- also if you remove your external SD, you loose the apps.
- the internal SD is WAY more than enough to "want" to have more apps on more cards...
- this would free up the external SD to be PRIMARILY AND EXCLUSIVELY user files.
and remove the last bit of android files that can be removed by taking out an sdcard...
- the internal SD is a class 6 speed, faster than most external SD cards that most inexperienced users end up using.. class 4 ebay/amazon crap.
can we change this???
i dont see any reason why not, we have all the necessary sources for what handles this.
im not exactly running out of internal storage but some users actually do, and this just seems to make more sense.
any update on this?
From what i know currently about android and our cappy's, heres the info.
1. 1.8 GB of "Internal Phone Storage" is plenty enough for (Apps, Data, Contacts, etc.) . I have 312 apps on my phone and i still have 896 MB left.
2. As far as i know, the "Internal" SD of the captivate is partitioned into system, data, and is also the internal sd that you can put files in. So if it really was a Class 6 , despite the horrifying write speeds, it would make no difference because the "Internal Phone Storage" is a partition of the built in 16 gb of internal sd.
Again, i know nothing about how our phone works, but this is the info i know.
I never come near filling the internal storage, so I would not need this for space saving. But, it would make my weekly ROM flash a lot easier to not even worry about those apps.
Apps2insternalsd is an app I would pay for ... and I am not one to buy apps, less than 5 in the past year.

low on space notification almost 4GB free still? why

what would cause this odd error when i still have so much free?
found this answer on an other droid forum is it true?
"There is a bug that causes this error, but since 3 big companies are involved, none of them are going to fix it any time soon. Basically, app space is limited to some arbitrary amount and is not equal to the space available on your phone."
I suspect you may be low in system memory. Scroll down to the very bottom of the SD card & phone storage settings. How much available System memory do you have?
system memory is alway around 100Mb even with the space notification.
when I uninstall enough apps it does go away.
stopping open apps or services does not help.
You may want to reset your device. I had a similar problem once with my Atrix. 100mb is a low amount of system memory. I have over 400mb still available on my Thrill.
I have over 650mb left in system memory and its says I have insufficient space whenever I try to download any game around 40mb. I cleared the cache and it worked for one game.

using ES task manager
memory T:442MB A:96MB =ram?
internal storage T:.98GB A:117MB =system nand or partition of internal sd?
sd card T:5.57GB A:3.92GB =internal sd card?
I have a 32GB external sd card.
I thought "system memory" under "SD card & phone storage settings" was RAM
but is seems to be what "ES task manager" reports as "internal storage"
why the hell is the android set up this way?
seems so ass backwards,
/ = system memory (root dir? is this a partition or seperate physical memory from the internal sd)
/sdcard/ = internal sd
/sdcard/_ExternalSD = external sdcard
What is being referred to as internal storage (or system memory) is where the apps are installed by default. You could try moving some apps to SD and it should help. However, I had a problem like this with my Atrix and I never could figure out what was using all the space, so I just did a factory reset. Of course, I used Titanium Backup first.
I've noticed that the thrill thinks the 4gb internal is an SD card and the actual SD card is labeled as "External" when you explore the files. I was thinking of doing a factory reset so I moved all my apps to SD, when I looked in file manager at my SD there was nothing there. I found them all in a folder called "SDCard" on my internal memory. This may have something to do with your issue.

You have 3 types of memory in the phone. There's your external SD (labeled as _External SD), Internal Phone Memory (internal SD), and System Memory (where by default apps are stored). You can move your apps to the internal SD if you desire and that's why it's showing a folder there with the apps in it.

So that it doesn't take up your system memory. If your system memory gets low, it won't let you install additional apps and may also slow down your phone.
Some people are saying that it is reporting wrong? No there actually is an SD card inside the phone and the one outside under the back plate.
To keep things straight:
System= Actual memory on the phone where apps are installed by default, moving to SD and uninstalling apps can create more space.
Internal= SDcard inside the phone where Apps are moved to when choosing move to SD also Alps will store data here and most downloads go here by default
External= The SDcard under backplate which you can access and change. A lot of apps will put backups here and if you choose SD storage in camera where your pics and vids will be. Usually this is set aside for actual personal storage of media and what not.
^ Is there a way to make the external SD card the default data storage? After installing some Gameloft games, my internal storage is already full (5.6 GBs is pathetic LG) but I still still have 2 more games (Dungeon Defenders and Spectral Souls) I want to install which take up about 2GB.

Close. System is where the OS and the system apps, the ones that come preinstalled are stored. The data partition is where market apps are stored. Installing apps from the market has no effect on the system partition. System apps cannot be moved to the sdcard, internal or otherwise. Its the apps on the /data partition that can be moves to the sdcard/internal storage.
Here's the breakdown:
System=619Mb (OS+system apps)
Internal (data)=1Gb (downloaded apps)
Internal SD=6gb (storage,a2sd)
External SD=8Gb (with included card).
LG claims 8gb internal space. All the above adds up to a little over 7.6gb. Leaving 60mb which is most likely the Cache partition.

Yes... There is only one way... Which is... You have to make your SD card to portable storage.... Before doing this action take a backup of your SD card... After completing the process you will see your internal storage's contents again on file manager or explorer.

Once your card is set as internal, then there is virtually no difference in the SD card storage and the 8gb internal storage. After formatting to internal SD card, the storage becomes "internal shared storage" and anything on internal or SD is treated as a single storage. So basically if any file is in internal or SD will then make no difference to the way Android will detect it.
However, I shall tell you a difference.
After formatting SD as internal, the internal goes to the location /data/media and SD goes to /sdcard

I don't understand. In the phone's settings-->storage and usb, I see internal storage and sd scan disc. Also in phone's file manager, I see only internal storage, which is the phone's internal storage and not the formated as internak storage sd card. Also in ES file explorer I see sd card and storage with emulated folder and self folder and nothing else in it. Also the only way to see the option to move media files from internal storage to sd, is when I connect a usb flash drive and after they moved to sd card they become invisible and the phone's media apps don't detect them.

Bro I told you all that is completely normal and is working just as it should.
Your SD card is now treated as a part of your internal storage.
I have a 16gb card as internal. See the ss below to see what the settings treat it as...
This means that if you have any pics, or videos, then it doesn't matter whether they are on SD or on internal, because they are basically the same.
As far as transferring stuff to other devices, lemme tell you that SD as internal won't work with other devices... So if you have a pic on SD and you remove SD and plug it in your PC using USB adapter to view it, then you will not see anything...
The only way for transfers is
1) Apps like ShareIt
2) USB to phone.
BTW internal SD will only help you if you want to install more Apps than allowed by the internal 8gb storage alone.

Bro. First of all :
After SD as internal format, all pics start going to SD card instead of internal. Internal storage is pushed with apps and data with the option of moving some apps to SD card too.
It's too simple but you seemingly don't understand it.
Look bro @SACS73 I already spent my time trying to reply to you and helping you when no one else was active.
The least you can do for me is to press the thanks button on my posts here.

I'm a bit in haste because this whole a7k forum is being run because of me and the devs rarely come online.
I do my best to stay away from posts that are too noobish. It would just waste my time. And if I reply to you, then I certainly feel that the post should not be ignored.
Also, I was not aggressive at all. I was just straight forward.
Your statement has left a scar though. I will never help you on this forum anymore. Best of luck getting help from other people who might come up once a while. It really hurts when you try to help but no one cares.
As the saying goes :

Thanks for the chat
