Yes, you can install apps on the phone's internal memory, although it has a very limited amount. If you install too many apps, you will find that you might be missing messages as the "Sync Manager" does not have enough room to sync and download your text messages from the server.
As for update.zip, I don't believe so, because when you flash a new custom ROM, what would happen to your update.zip? I'd think it would get wiped as well. Then you're stuck.

Ok ty i realize update.zip would take way too much memory. How bout going from 2.0 to 2.1 is that possible on its memory? Just until i get an sd card. I was told this is wiped clean back to factory i guess running 2.0. When i get my phone should there be a update avail when i turn it on if its still 2.0?

It should be on 2.1 already out of the box, unless they bought it when it was released and then it was not upgraded at all, highly unlikely.

I got this off of ebay so i was told its factory but the girl sold it cause hairline crack also slider a little rough other than that she said it scrolls flawlessly. She said its factory so i imagine 2.0. Would there be an update i can look for from motorola even if it has not been activated? Under system tools or update?

Yeah, there should be an update available.

G1 Hero flash strange problems

Alright there are a few people with the exact same problem as I, vr24 is one that can attest..
Basically I flashed JacHero2.63slowSD and it worked, but after flashing to another hero build (non slow sd), it would get to the screen unlock.. but when i pull that screen down all I see is a loading HTC screen. It never goes beyond that!
I have two seperate SD cards that were retabled, formatted, and set up using parted from cynorecovery 1.3.1. Both of them with full wipes and reflashes with any Hero build give me the same problem. Any non hero build works fine. The only big whoops I can remember is that I downloaded and used swapper even though i had it automatically set up?
I reflashed the phone all the way back to fresh start with dreaimg.nbh to rc29, rerooted, and installed everything properly and still have the same problems.
When trying jachero 2.5 i can at least get a root access request for swapper, which i deny. Anyone have any experience with this?

nope :[ just stuck at htc screen. i can hit end phone call to go to screen lock again, but when i pull it down back to htc screen
I would recommend then reformatting your SD card. Hero stores weird things on the SD card and can sometimes cause problems even between Hero builds (like in your case.) See if that works for you :]

does anyone think thtis could be because of an improper flash or when i activated swapper (even though swapper was automatic on jachero doh), it wrote some corrupted files in some god forsaken place that they cant write to now?
and if so, how would i wipe it clean? i reflashed to rc29 nbut im not sure i f that did the whole job

Nexus one and rooting

Hi new here. Went though some threads but could not find the answers I need on rooting, so starting a new one
My power button is dying and HTC does not provide any replacement phones to Canada, so I am going to have to root and use my trackball to wake up instead of sending it to repair (I am afraid they might scratch or break something. Even if they repair it looks chances of the power button dying again is high). Now the questions
1. If I root following the procedure here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 (i.e. not unlock the bootloader) will I still be able to get OTA updates or do I need to get updates from one of the custom roms everytime?
2. If I follow the procedure (1) can I install the mod for using trackball to wake or do I need a custom rom to achieve that?
3. Is there any mod that can wake up using a combination of trackball and volume button. I suspect trackball will be pressed a lot when I keep in my pocket.
4. How much memory can one save from using the custom ROMS. At times my memory left is 20MB and phone is very sluggish. The maximum available at any time is ~70MB
thanks
If you can't get warranty service done being in Canada, why would you not unlock the bootloader? It makes no sense to me. (also, if you can use an address of a friend in the US, they will allow that.)
1. You will only get OTA updates if you are running a completely stock ROM. Also note, you will only be able to use the OTA updates if you are still on stock recovery. Custom ROMs will always be around before the OTA anyhow.
2. I believe you have to alter some file settings to allow it. I am not positive tho.
3. The trackball doesn't get pushed as much as you may think. It's actually a pretty stiff push. I don't recall ever waking/unlocking my phone while it was in a pocket.
4. Depends on how many apps you have installed, how big your SD card is, and whether or not you are using a2sd. Right now on my phone, I am running MicroMods Gingerbread, I have a2sd enabled, and a 4gb class 6 transcend card. I am showing 142mb of available internal storage.

Yeah I read that. I have no American friend close to the border and arranging a trip will be expensive. I can probably sell this and get a nexus S for that price Also I have like 3 months warranty left, so I do not want to unlock the bootloader till it completely expires (just a safety net)

SO looks like no use waiting for OTA updates. I assume custom ROMs will be updated whenever Google release security updates as well

SD card is 4gb. I have moved all my apps to SD card. The browser is the main culprit, I have to delete the cache once in a while. Never seen 142MB free space on my phone...
He's got space because its Apps2Ext, not the 2.2 Apps2SD.
The power button completely died. So it is going to go back for repair . I am going to do unlock the bootloader once I get it back..
A little late on this... but am I crazy... or can't you just install, let's say, widget locker and use the trackball or other buttons to wake. You don't have to unlock OR root to get that functionality, just replace your lock screen.

[Q] Phone is wigging out, need techsperts help.

Hi guys,
I have been searching the forums for 2 weeks now trying to fix this myself, but I have put my pride in my pocket and am asking for help.
Backstory: Rooted phone, flashed CWM, used tons of custom froyo ROM's (doc roms mainly) and most recently Darky's 9.3 (awesome).
But then i decided I wanted Gingerbread (this is where the trouble began). Gingerbread worked just fine, but as there is no custom roms, I flashed back to 2.2 (obviosly screwed something up), because since then I have been plagued with process com.whatever.android.somethingelse has stopped unexpectedly. please try again.
please don't ask which force close message I am getting, lets just say, I am pretty sure I am getting them all!
I have flashed stock 2.1, custom 2.1, stock 2.2, custom 2.2's, I even went back to gingerbread a few times trying to fix this ***** of a problem. I tried re partitioning just the .pit file and then the other 3 files seporatly. NOTHING WORKS.
So, I am calling out to all you guys and girls who are heaps smarter than me to please help. the phone functions, turns on, make or receive calls and texts (not mms), emails work sometimes, but if I turn the phone off and on all the settings are wiped and I need to reload all the user details.
Oh, I should also add another major issue, I cannot use the internal memory for anything, I cannot take pictures unless I select the external SD card, I cannot install apps from market or .apk. I cannot even move data to it when its mounted on the pc.
I am completely lost. please help me.
And thanks in advance.
I
C'mon guys, I know there is a lot to read, but please, can no-body help me?
Sounds like it might be a dead internal sd card. You said you tried a re-partition with 3 file firmware? That should fix pretty much anything. I think your only option is to return to samsung at this point.

Thanks for the response.
is it possible to fix myself?
As Samsung will not cover it, even if I flash the stock Telstra ROM, it will still show that it has been rooted?
In doing your research, I'm sure you've heard of the internal SD problems that plague the i9000, are you by chance with Bell Mobility? This line concerns me..
"Oh, I should also add another major issue, I cannot use the internal memory for anything"
When I experienced multiple FCs (force closes) and incompatible system UID's, I tried flashing every kind of ROM there was with every kind of PIT file as well to no avail. However, one in particular worked for me and others. It is usually referred to as a full ROM. It contains the .csc and .sbl in it as well as the usual ROM contents.
The ROM I used is called FULL-i9000UGJH2.tar. Note, flashing this ROM with a pit file (be it 512, 513, or 803) wouldn't help me at all. What fixed the problem was flashing ONLY the ROM file in ODIN. Unfortunately, I can't find the thread where I found this ROM. I suggest searching around for it, if you can't find it PM me, and I will up it somewhere for you.
I'm not sure if this will help with your specific case, but its worth a shot. Also, wherever applicable, do a factory reset, clear your cache, and a full wipe install.
Good luck.
[edit]
Do a complete wipe and install with a stock 2.2 or 2.1 ROM in ODIN, there will be no evidence of a root.

I do a factory reset, wipe cache and data every time, however after doing all of that and flashing a new rom, it still has my google account details in the phone?? this is wierd, as I factory reset from recovery mode AND wipe all data from within the phone? Any suggestions?
Edit: and no, its is an Australian Telstra i9000

I am using odin, this is the wierd part. I have tried repartitioning, not repartitioning, I have tried 512.pt 803.pit, full wipe and reset from both in the phones settings and recovery mode. reboot it, go through settup wizzard (which eventually force closes requiring me to reboot), go into accounts and there is my google account still set up???
Edit: also, I cannot find a file called FULL-i9000UGJH2.tar, I am downloading i9000UGJH2.tar as we speak, but i doubt it is the one you were reffering to, if you are able to point in in the right direction, that would be ace.

If you're entering your gmail address in during the setup wizard, our google account will be linked. If you're not setting anything up and it is remembering your info, then something is definitely fishy.
I would flash back to a stock rom, and see what Samsung or your provider can do for you. In all honesty, the only thing I would be able to suggest is flashing and wiping
[edit]
When you download that ROM, open it up (using a program like WinRAR). The point of a full rom is that it contains
-cache.rfs
-dbdata.rfc
-factoryfs.rfs
-modem.bin
-param.lfs
-sbl.bin
-zimage
I'm unsure of any incompatibilities between the Canadian and Australian versions, but I will upload my copy for you to try.

could it be something to do with the file system gingerbread uses? these issues only started when I went back from gingerbread to froyo? (and before you ask, I have tried going back to gingerbread with no solution)
I may have to bite the bullet and shoot it back to Samsung... or just buy another one! would love to try FULL-i9000UGJH2.tar if you could remember where you got it?
Thanks again for your help.

I seem to have remembered it being in this thread, which is why i had it on bookmark, but I'm not sure if the link has been removed or if i had been mistaken since I can no longer find it. I'm uploading for you to Rapidshare, where you can download as a free user...~30 mins . Again, I'm not sure if there are modem incompatibilities or not since this I am in Canada, and you are in Australia.

The way you're referring to accessing this internal SD....are you flashing your ROMs to an external microsd card?
Here is the full UGJH2 that I flashed (with no other options) that saved me.

Hey mate, no go, i got some functionality back on the phone, but still force closes and I cannot save anything to SD (or install apps).
another email account (an exchange server account) that was previously deleted has appeared back set up and working (I have not been able to set this up for a week), it appeared on its own which leads me to think there is a hidden partition on my internal sd, hence I cannot access it. must be something to do with Gingerbread.
Thanks for all your help though.

Hi mate,
I have tried that several times, i think there is a hidden partition thanks to Gingerbread.
I would be sure that your internal sd card is screwed but since everything worked fine before gingerbread something else has probably happened. Also your data wont delete and that seems to be the source of the problem. Try to install the lagfix from k13d and see if it had any results. This should reformat all partitions on the internal sd.

Yes Please I'm thinking I've got the same problem.
Just received a Motorola Droid never been rooted. I've done the RSD lite thing,
rooted using z4root
and am unable to mount my internal sd card, there is no ext_sd even with my external sd card in. It only will mount the external, I cant get access to root to transfer any roms to it.
and cwr does not let me in only the standard e3 recovery. any helps?
Yes, please do explain how you fixed this problem. I've got a rom that I can't get the sd card to work

Soft Bricked Boost 510 / Won't go past second HTC boot screen

Minding my own business one day when a Google services app on the phone stopped working and kept popping up, so I rebooted to help fix it. The phone now hangs at the HTC boot screen after the boost logo had already come up. Completely stock, never unlocked or rooted, and I have no idea what went wrong. Unfortunately, I can't do a factory reset from HBOOT because there's important documents on the phone's internal storage. What can I do to fix this? Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

There's not much you can do. You're gonna have to factory reset because even if you unlock the boot loader at this point the phone is going to reset anyway.. You should always keep stuff that's important on the sd card not internal.
There may be a way using adb and a computer using adb pull but I think that's just for the sd card I don't know if you can navigate to internal using a pc because I don't have that type of issue.
Try hooking it up to the pc and see if you can get into the internal storage.

Try to boot into safe mode. As soon as you see the first HTC screen on boot up, hold the Down volume button and keep holding it until the phone boots or at least for about 15 seconds to see if it will work.

ADB won't work because I never enabled USB debugging, unless ADB pull doesn't require that. Computer doesn't see anything when it hangs. The last thing I can think of is take it back to the place you bought it from, if that is possible. Especially if you didn't mod the phone. I've never heard of this problem.
I'm trying something really creative that I remember doing on an old One V. Starting the latest RUU, pulling the ROM from the temp files, placing it on an SD card, applying it in the stock recovery. It's a long shot, but its a shot. The only problem is knowing what to name the zip, update.zip doesn't seem to work.

Nothing of the sort, just browsing social media. News on what I tried: renamed the pulled ROM zip 0PCVIMG.zip and booted HBOOT. HBOOT accepted it as an update and I "updated" it, however, it wiped the phone. It's alive and well, but it's wiped. However, I'm left with something really off. The storage settings show 3.15GB of "other" on the internal storage, which I'm thinking might be my old data. My Files doesn't show anything as well as when hooked up to my PC. I'm going to be forever scratching my head on this as well.

That's basically the carriers crap/programs on there... Mine says that too but a bit less since I've gotten rid of a lot of bloatware.
May I ask how you managed to get the phone to accept that as an update?

I went through the official HTC RUU's temp files to find a zip called "rom.zip". I copied that to a clean SD card, renamed it to 0PCVIMG.zip (in HBOOT, it would check to see if those files were on the SD card before coming to the main screen), then the phone unzipped it and asked if I wanted to update. Thinking it would act as a normal update, I hit " yes". It took about 10 min to finish flashing in HBOOT (not recovery). It rebooted to a clean slate 510.

I was just curious because I thought you didn't have an sd card but glad it's working again albeit wiped.

Yeah I went out and bought one in hopes I could move everything to it. I've been using OTG drives for a while on everything else I have and thought SD cards were a pain, boy was I wrong.

The SD card for this phone is rather pretty important if you ask me because with the very limited amount of space we have on it is a major problem when it comes to installing a lot of the programs/apps we use... I think the SD card is a lifeline since it keeps the backups and personal stuff on it and if anything goes wrong that little card saves you lol...

I just factory reset my phone and I only have 2.75GB in Other. I wonder what that stuff is on your phone. What is 0PCVIMG.zip? Where did you get it from?

I ran the RUU for my phone and found its temp files by opening the process' file location. Scroll through the files and find rom.zip that the RUU creates. Wait for it to copy and then close the RUU. Renamed the rom.zip to 0PCVIMG.zip because of the model of the phone, and HBOOT looking for the image. As for the space, I have no idea either. I'm going to get it swapped out at best buy if I can.

I'm fairly certain that the 2.75GB of used space is your carriers bloatware crap.. It's even on it's own partition and you can gather that information from running adb shell and then cat proc/emmc
