Hi
I have flashed my G1 T-mobile following the the one-click process in here! i have now root access. The ROM is CyanogenMod-3.9.11.2
After all that i bought a trascend SDcard 8GB class 6, formatted about 600MB to EXT4 using gparted on a live cd, winxp and my G1.
The first thing i noticed is that the phone is slower to load up. it stays about 35secs on the G1 logo and then move to android for a total of about 1min to be ready.
Second thing my free space on internal memory went from 38MB to 68MB, i believe somehow the phone moved the cache on the sdcard...if i install new programs they get installed on the phone memory as far as i understand...however i could be wrong on this. i never started the phone without sdcard since, I'm not sure if this could damage the phone in some way.
I would like to have some feedback on this (the slow boot and memory thing) if someone has experienced a similar situation.
I'm thinking to flash my phone again and move to a stable version of Cyanogen so that i can use app2Sd and Cyanogen updater!!
- how can i flash a new room, considering that i have the latest radio but not HARDspl. (as far as i understand the oneclick method doesn't change the SPL)
I was looking at using again the small oneclick software and flash the Cyanogen 4.0 this time, would that make sense since i have already root access on the phone?
thank you for the help
kirk
update
After installing and unistalling few softwares i found out that all programs are actually on the SDcard however the Mobile uses still the internal memory for the cache. This doesn't bother me for now since i still have about 68MB free. Basically if you install CyanogenMod and you don't have a partitioned SDcard all software get installed on the internal memory however as soon as you put in an partioned card all programs get transfered automatically after the first boot. At least this is what happen to me. Somehow i got what i wanted and because of this i don't need to flash my phone anymore... maybe I'll flash it again when android 2 is out, if i don't have to change spl, image recovery or anythingelse too risky
I used the 1-click method as well, and I just download the latest cyanogen rom, rename it to update, boot into cm-recovery and apply the update.
One more thing, the latest versions of Cyanogen's rom have auto apps2sd built into the rom. It will automatically move all apps to the sd card as long as you have an ext2/ext3/ext4 partition on your sd card.
Your still going to have the same boot time. It's still going to take awhile to boot, just because you have a custom rom doesn't mean it will boot faster. And to load a new rom either rename to update.zip and update or if you have the newest recovery then you can just flash whatever rom without renaming because you can flash any .zip file.
In reading your post I think you said you wanted to use the small 1 click software to download cm4.0 You are done rooting your phone you no longer need to use the 1 click software.
Just copy new rom (cm4.0.4) to sd card
unplug phone from computer
turn off phone
boot into recovery (home and power at the same time)
flash new rom
when you use one root, it flashes cm-recovery 1.4 so there is no need to rename, just put on the root of your sd and flash from recovery

Are you aware of any reason for the slow boot after partition of the sdcard??
is it the stock 1GB sdcard?
Cause it has to read from the sd during boot up and it has to run the script for the apps2sd

As far as i know i'm not using app2sd yet. I partitioned my SDcard ONLY after i flashed my phone. however like i said i think the phone is somehow using the ext4 partition for something.
You reckon this would be a normal boot time i mean it takes between 50secs and 1.05 min to be ready. Phone is stable as far as i can tell.
I myself am not concerned with the boot time, the ext4 is another filesystem that it has to read and recongize, you basicly have a little mini computer in your hands so how long does your pc take to load up, there are many files and system checks that it has to go through starting up not to mention all the settings and components it has to turn on
Bottom line, if you want something to boot up quickly than get a basic phone because there is a very good way to speed up a mini computer to do the same

Well i'm aware of all this and i'm not concerned too much about the boot time. I'm only trying to gather information and learn a bit more from other ppl experiences. I come from windows mobile and android OS is all new world for me.
have you a similar configuration to my G1? Do you run app2sd? is yor boot time similar to mine??

Just a quick question for future reference...
do i need to put Cyanogen recovery image on the root of the sd card when i boot into recovery mode?
thank you
Kirk
Why did you root your phone? You have no desire to search to even do one of the most well documented things to your phone in these forums. What you need to do is take a DREAIMG.nbh file and put it in the root of your sdcard (or in no folders), then open up terminal emulator and type su then reboot bootloader once that happens wait for it to flash that image. Then you will have the most pimping room on your phone. Also you have amazing boot times. Everything you want.

Hi David
I had specific reason to root 2 different G1 and this is not to play with it or try a new ROM or even experiment new things. I may change my ROM again when a major relase is out (i.e. Android 2 if it has something that i need)
Going back to reflashing the phone.
You now suggest me to use DREAIMG.nbh which is actually mentioned on the guide "hoe to downgrade-root-flash your phone" here
....am I missing something here?? thank you for taking the time to reply anyway.
..I have read quite a bit on this forum and i decided to use the one-click method (because is the quickest and safiest one). I thought reflashing should be as easy. go in safe mode wipe and reflash it. Anyway for my nature i tend to ask/investigate one thing before go and actually do it. My questions are:
- if i press home power right now, considering that i have nothing on my sdcard would it take me to the safemode screen?
- Consequently do i need to have Cyanogen image revovery together with the ROM on my sd card in order to flash a new version of CyanogenMod?
Thank you
Kirk
you can boot into recovery at any time by pressing home and power when the phone is powered down. it will go into recovery no matter what is on the sdcard.
Also the recovery image you have on your phone does not determine what rom you can flash.
wow... i am at a loss for words...... do you even know why you did any of the things you did? did you even read the release notes for cyan's rom's? ALL OF THE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS ARE THERE...
if you have an ext partition on your sd card....it WILL AUTOMATICALLY be used for apps2sd with 80%-90% of the ROM's out there today... ITS IN ALL OF THE ROMS' CHANGE LOGS/RELEASE NOTES

going into safemode wont flash anything.... i suggest you search and find out what exactly safemode is, especially since there was a thread only a few threads below yours detailing it.
All you need to flash a new ROM is the rom on your sd card and a working recovery, as well as anything that the ROM your installing has required which are noted in the changelog/release notes....
nothing else is needed on your SD card, except maybe specific partitioning, which will be noted in the ROM's requirements.
I try to help out here as much as i can when i have time (most of my posts are in Q&A helping out people) but it seems as though no one even bothers to look at the actual forums anymore. They just create an account, create a thread, bug people till a simple question is answered, and disappear forever.....
I came to this site simply to get roms, but i stayed because there was so much to learn and i created an account to help out people as well...i did all of my major modifications without asking any questions....all the questions are already answered somewhere...
i understand its hard to go through all the clutter, but it is starting to look as if no one even cares anymore
@B-man007 i am starting to feel like you do, i had my phone rooted and all that good stuff at least a month before i made an account just to download something uploaded to the forum. I wish i could see how many post i have in a ceratin forum bc i imagine at least 450 or 500 of them would be in this one helping people. Its getting to the point where i no longer care to help people and i thought i had a lot of patience. I porbably do but people are sinking to new lows with the questions they ask...
I think I have maybe 5 posts in dev, most of my posts are q&a and general, but then again half of those posts are from hijacking threads. I just got tired of answering the same questions over and over and over

Yes, you can install apps on the phone's internal memory, although it has a very limited amount. If you install too many apps, you will find that you might be missing messages as the "Sync Manager" does not have enough room to sync and download your text messages from the server.
As for update.zip, I don't believe so, because when you flash a new custom ROM, what would happen to your update.zip? I'd think it would get wiped as well. Then you're stuck.
Ok ty i realize update.zip would take way too much memory. How bout going from 2.0 to 2.1 is that possible on its memory? Just until i get an sd card. I was told this is wiped clean back to factory i guess running 2.0. When i get my phone should there be a update avail when i turn it on if its still 2.0?
It should be on 2.1 already out of the box, unless they bought it when it was released and then it was not upgraded at all, highly unlikely.
I got this off of ebay so i was told its factory but the girl sold it cause hairline crack also slider a little rough other than that she said it scrolls flawlessly. She said its factory so i imagine 2.0. Would there be an update i can look for from motorola even if it has not been activated? Under system tools or update?
Yeah, there should be an update available.
Hi everybody
Ive had my first HTC phone for a few weeks. Im running 2.3.3 with hboot 1.16. I have rooted the phone and bootloader unlock with HTCdev, therefore I am still S-ON. Running cyanogenmod 7.1.
I have a few questions regarding my device which hopefully you can help me with:
1.(when final versions are released etc) Because cyanogenmod 9 is be based on ICS, can I actually just install cyanogenmod 9 like I did with 7.1? or would I have to somehow upgrade my stock rom to ICS and then install cyan 9? Do I ever have to update clockworkmod?
2.Theres a lot of talk about gold golds when I look on forums especially when people have certain things wrong with there phone. Is it worth me making one just incase something goes wrong with my phone? Or can this not be done, im not actually 100% sure about these tbh.
3.Are there anyways to speed up the phone like apps etc. im thinking about moving all my apps to the sd card as apparently this helps? I also have SD maid pro installed to help clean it up etc I run that once a week. Any other apps that are useful?
4.Is it worth me getting s-off by downgrading my 1.16 to 1.13?
5.With iphone I ran a program called ultrasnow to carrier unlock my phone so I could but any simcard into my phone and it would work. Can this be done with HTC? Im currently locked on optus.
Sorry for the questions. Ive just came from having an iphone for the past 4 years, so all of the HTC stuff is very new to me. But hopefully one day ill be able to help people when they ask questions like I have done today. I will give thanks etc to answers.
Thank you for your time on helping

You should be able to just flash the cm9 rom same as cm7. I'm sure if there was any special requirements they will be stated in the thread when it arrives to our phone.

A goldcard is used for flashing a stock rom from a different carrier. Not much point making one until its necessary

I think moving apps to the sdcard may actually decrease performance as the internal phone memory is faster than sdcard. Unless you have Installed apps to near the phones capacity (which you may have being a new user ) I think its best to leave them where they are.
A good way to increase the phones performance would be to overclock or install a more efficient kernel. When I was running cm7 on my phone I found Enki v0-alpha to be awesome.

I'm unaware of any unlock method for this phone on gingerbread. Are you prepaid or plan? Prepaid can get free unlock code if you recharge an accumulated $80 (or $90 I cant recall exactly)
Thanks for the reply. ahh im pretty good with my apps tbh ive pretty much just downloaded the ones i used on my iphone on a daily basis except the ones that are only available in england (im travelling atm).
My phones is ok with phonecalls and sms, but its not very often i have full reception. A lot of the time when i am holding my phone it will go down to 0 bars. Its in an otter box communter case as well. Would different radio's be able to fix this issue? If i was to s-off obviously. And thanks for the kernal info, ill have a look into them. Not that i understand them atm but a bit of research should help.
And when i top up on the 9th i will be on $90 so i will go into optus and see about getting it unlocked.
Thanks for your help
About sim unlocking, I went to ebay and found a seller who pays the hefty fee for access to all unlock codes for different phones, by carrier. The unlock code is associated with the "EMEI" number of your specific phone.
It cost me about $20. My phone will accept any sim card fine. (Won't connect with a few carriers that use unique radio frequencies.)
My phone originally came from Bell, I got it used, and the above method let me put my Fido simcard into it.
Edit: oh, but if you get it free, oh well.
sent from my Android via xda
yeah i just wanted to know if i could do it in a matter of seconds like i can with my iphone. Not that i need it atm, but nice to have it done for when i need it. Thanks anyway !
speaking of kernals, if i was to flash a customer kernal. In order to get back to the original kernal would i have to reinstall the ROM or is there a way to delete it as so to speak?

Inside your rom's zip file, there's a boot.img. This is the kernel. You can flash it in fastboot
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
if i reflash the boot.img like i did when i initially installed cyanogen, wont my rom go back to how it was when i first installed it? Meaning i have to re-install all my apps etc etc. probs a noob question tbh, but ive never had to do anything like this yet.

No, the boot partition contains no user data.
Thats great thanks.

I want an application of some sort that will allow me to decide which apps can connect to the internet and which cant. As i would like to block some apps from accessing the internet, unless i allow them to? any ideas?

Hello everyone,
Firstly what a great website. Thank you. I am a 'noob', I have watched the video, searched the posts etc, However as someone who understands very little technological jargon, I was looking for a step by step, recent, updated guide to rooting the HTC Salsa.
Now don't be fooled...I actually have no idea about rooting...I have only just learned about this from searching internal memory issues. However, I am good and following step by step instructions/videos etc
So, can anyone link me to the correct thread, if it has already been posted or help to guide me?
Thanks in advance

there are several others..
Now the route for rooting just got easier....its much more easier to flash a new rom.....as it comes with preroot anyway, saving a lot of time and agro!
its a choice thats up to you!
Go here >http://www.wix.com/bigbearevo/salsa for how to create stuff and do stuff to your phone! I compiled it so people could find it easier...
Thank you BBE,
however I'd be lying if I said that I fully understood any of that!!
I am happy to choose whatever is the easier option, although I am not sure which that is. I looked on your website, but I really didn't understand what part I should be following. I could also not see how to join.
So, would it be possible for you advise me again, with one option that is the easiest. I do not know what flashing a ROM is, but am happy to follow instructions.
Thanks for your patience

Lol that's nps
Ok few questions first to help find which route you want to take.
Do you want to Change what your using right now?
I mean by u are using sense stock.
Check in android development for Roms of choice to figure out what u like.
Flashing is the process in which you install a new rom.
I myself am a serial flasher, meaning while I make Roms I constantly flash my phone lol.
What do u want out of rooting?
Are u just going for the increased memory or do u want a change in appearance too?
The options are.
Keep your stock rom, root it and increase memory.
Flash a custom rom, pleanty around now, advantage with this is most things are Inc that u would have to do on stock rom.
To do this also. U may need to su things prior.
Just to start you off.
Turn off phone and pull out battery.
Reinsert battery, hold down volume key and press power with volume key pressed down.
HBOOT will appear. At the top will be alot of numbers etc. I need to see if you have old or new updates.
If u have old u may need to unlock bootloader with updates first. Easy to do.
Fill in this and choose the way u want and I shall help you succeed in your goal.
BB
Wasn't me............ ;-)
Hi BBE
I still don't understand the abbreviations: nps, su etc?
Anyway this is what phone says:

I am ideally looking to increase memory. My phone has been stuck without functioning properly for about 4 weeks now. I am happy to include a new ROM if this also increases my memory, but to be honest I don't really care about changing the image of my phone but am happy to do so if this helps.
I am not really sure what I am looking for in my 'ROM of choice' so there is little point in me looking unless it is really obvious? But perhaps you can guide me?
Thanks again
Ruthie
P.S I am more than happy to get rid of many of vodafones pre-installed applications.

nps = no problems
look in rom development section, see threads with[ROM] in it, see pictures and whats included in the roms it self.
personally if you want standard use a sense rom
Options are
Thing rom
Bigbear x series V10
Minds sense 3.5
reason i state this is the rooting part.
All custom roms have root/New SU (Superuser rights app)
This is required to run the increased memory.
NOTE Updating HBOOT?UNLOCKING BOOTLOADER WILL WIPE YOUR ROM CLEAN.
BACK EVERYTHING UP U CAN
You need to update your HBOOT.
Goto HTCDev >http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader
Register (takes a few mins)
plug your phone into the pc and select charge option.
Download these >http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?68k4zzzeamjwswt
extract these in to a new folder on c: called Android
now follow instructions to update your HBOOT.
Ok assuming the HBOOT is now updated via HTCDev
You can follow the rest of the instructions to unlock the bootloader, takes around 15mins or so.
So you got the email with the unlock.bin file.
add that into the Android folder u made with those files in there.
Follow instructions again to begin your unlock.
All Done.
so you have updated the HBOOT and unlock bootloader....
Good now for the next bit.
Installing CWM 5
This is a program installed into the phone itself.
This allows you to do pretty much anything you want.
Main thins are Backup and restore of your device.
Flashing of custom Roms
here is recovery >http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?bumma6im6fu8q4b
this is pretty easy to do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438804
this shows how to install the recovery.
Once you have done this, then its upto you if your root it or install a new rom.
...................................................................................................
New Memory
So to increase the memory partition u need to complete the previous task.
Now then.
Tools required for this next task.
Minitool partition wizard >http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
SD READER for your pc.
About 30mins of your time.
Ok to start with
Turn off your phone, remove sd and place into the reader and into your pc via USB slot.
Now open up The partition wizard.
Personally id back up your sd right now...just in case.
Now select your sd and create a new partition
You want to create and EXT3 partition and select it as Primary only, apply actions, now it will do its thing, watch as it works.
Now if this has completed the sd may register as bad....don't worry.
Unplug reader and reinsert back to pc, now you should have 2 partitions on your sd EXT3 max 1gb and the rest fat32
this shouldn't have touched your fat32 section but if you didn't follow it right and it got wiped...just copy back your backup onto the sd now.
ok reinsert the sd into your phone and start it up.
now to get access to this new memory...it all depends on what rom you are using.
On stock or stock based rom which have NO APPS2SD.
all roms state if this has it or not. mine dont.
now using a set script you have to flash this in recovery mode to enable the new memory.
For APPS2SD use this >http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?qr5rh2fho1hnbnl
Roms WITHOUT APPS2SD >http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?duigp9ky9796b65
Using the wrong one will cause problems so be very clear what u want.
reboot phone and enjoy new memory.
here are my guides showing the how 2

Try not to add in a thread into your post. It takes up so much space and isn't required. Answer to your question is yes of course u can root without s-off. Its called unlocking your bootloader. Then add recoveery then root. Its easy. Please follow my guide in other threads to do this.

HTC Salsa Memory
Hi Big Bear, primarily thank you for all your posts and info which I found really helpful.
My Phone:HTC Salsa
HBOOT-1.07.0000
My problem is:
I used XTC Clip to S-OFF my HTC Salsa, and rooted it. My main aim is to increase its internal memory. So I followed the thread step by step. After rooting the phone (downloaded "root.zip"), I did the 3 wipes and installed CWM 5.0.2.6. Booted phone and all was fine. I did the 3 wipes again, booted the phone and allowed the ROM to fully boot. Then I entered into the HBOOT --> Recovery --> Install zip from SD Card --> installed "htc-data2sd-ext3.zip" and rebooted phone. I used 16gb Class 10 micro (Partitioned using Minitool to ext3 using just 800mb and the rest FAT32, first partition FAT32 and the second partition ext3 both as Primary). I was really happy with the result as when I booted my SD showed 800mb of free space.
I started to download my favourite applications and all was fine. I then switched off phone, placed the SIM and switched back on. Phone reception was very low too, just one or two bars but otherwise all was fine for about an hour until it started to give me several errors of Force Closing. SMSs won't arrive as when I clicked messages, it Force Closes, the same happened with the GMAIL application. I restored the phone to my back up and I did the process all again for about 6 times even using different SD cards but the result was always the same.
So now I restored again, using CWM 5026, created ext3 partition again and downloaded Link2SD. This however is making almost no difference and my internal memory left is now only about 40mb. Phone is working fine, Full Mobile Network Reception, messages work fine too but I did not solve the memory problem.
Am I missing something? Any help from you is greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to hearing from you when you have time.
Thank you so much once again.
Cheers,

Can I upgrade Hboot from 1.07 to 1.08 since I am now S-OFF? If yes, how can I go about it?
Thank you for your help.

Hi Vigoos, thank you once again for your help. I have managed to follow another thread about Hboot Update for S-OFF. I followed it, updated the bootloader and now I have 1 gb of ext3 memory.
Thanks to you, Problem solved. Wonderful job, keep it up!

Hey @BigBearEvo
I intend to root my friends HTC Salsa and I think yours is the best method out there. The rest kinda confuse me. However, the links dont seem to work. I am unable to download anything.
I understand that your post is old and there could be some updates as of today. Do you know of any better method or how to go about?
All my friend wants to do is get some more internal memory.
Thanks

look in rom development section, see threads with[ROM] in it, see pictures and whats included in the roms it self.
personally if you want standard use a sense rom
Options are
Thing rom
Bigbear x series V10
Minds sense 3.5
reason i state this is the rooting part.

Hi All!
So I recently got a new AHD off ebay. Finally managed to get it free from AT&T's prison using the code (Unlockunit.com $18). Unlocked the bootloader.. rooted the thing and install Philz Touch and Official CM10.1 ROM. All is well.
Except a few annoyances.
1) Why does it install EVERYTHING on the phone's mem? There is also no option to move installed programs like I had on my old HTC Desire Z. How can I tell apps like Whatsapp to use the SD card and not the device mem???
2) Why is there an "Emulated" folder with all the contents of SD card copied over? Can I delete this?
3) For those who are using or have used official CM10.1: Did your screen go completely dark whenever you made a call??? It comes back on as soon as call has ended. I called my bank recently and could not access the dialer as the screen was off.
That's it for now.. will add more Q's later if I have some.. Overall I love AHD.. will replace the battery later on if I feel the need. Hopefully battery life will improve after I use the phone for a week or so..
TIA!

I might be wrong here...
1. With latest iteration of android os, there is no more move to sd support. Google doesn't like it, thats why nexus devices never had sd card slot.
2. Probably thats the way android handles it, by emulating the sd card.
3. I never experienced this. Did you have a screen protector blocking the proximity sensor?

1. Mm.. it worked on my Desire Z with Andromadus CM10.1 Nightly.
2. In the file manager I see 3 folders inside the Storage folder: 1) Emulated 2)SDCARD 3)USBDISK
3. No protectors at the moment. Thinking of getting one when I go out later.

1) Because that's where everything gets installed. Newer versions of Android don't necessarily have the option to move to SD card. Most phones after ICS don't have the option. I think only Samsung has been trying to keep it around, because it's not really supported anymore. I believe the limiting factor is how the memory is partitioned.
2) What you are looking at is a Symlink. It appears as though the Emulated folder has a copy of the SD card, but it is literally the same folder. One is just a virtual link to the other partition. Don't delete it, or you'll delete everything on your SD card.
3) Question; any reason you're still on CM10.1? CM11 (KitKat) is quite lovely, and I don't have any dialer issues. If I remember correctly, proximity sensor issues plagued this phone during development of CM10.1, and that may be your problem.

WRT 1 and 2.. I found a tool called DirectoryBind (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/themes-apps/tool-directorybind-data-to-externalsd-t1410262) and it works great.. now I can save game data on my SD card while Android thinks its still on the internal memory.
3) Which one would you recommend? I heard none of them are stable enough to be daily drivers... hows the one in your signature?

If you want the "safest" option, download CM11 Snapshot M10. If you want the absolute latest, download the latest nightly. Both are very stable.
http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=moto_msm8960_jbbl
Daily driver? I only have one device, the Atrix HD. And it's a corporate phone provided by my company. I use it every day, and my job depends on it. So I'd say it's suitable as a daily driver :fingers-crossed:
If I had to pick ONE thing that's not perfect, it would be GPS. It works, but I do a lot of navigating while driving, it tends to tell me that it can't find GPS every 5-10 minutes. After a few seconds of thinking about it, it'll finally find itself and go back to normal. I figure it's a Kernel problem that will eventually go away whenever official KitKat is released by Motorola.
But don't let that scare you away. Otherwise, everything else is basically working perfectly.

Thanks! The link you provided is for all the Motorolas running the MSM8960 processor I think? Are these ROM's better than the ones designed specifically for Atrix HD? The ones here: http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=mb886

I see your confusion. Many moons ago, all phones using the MSM8960 processor (Motorola Atrix HD, Razr HD, Photon Q, etc.) were all "unified" under the same ROM. Effectively, the MB886 device, as far as CyanogenMod is concerned, is discontinued.
The link I provided is for all MSM8960-based phones that are still on the JellyBean bootloader (-"jbbl"). That's you.
If/when this phone gets an official upgrade to KitKat from Motorola, our bootloader will get upgraded, and we can start flashing the non-"jbbl" version.
p.s. There's a specific thread for it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2523708
