A disgruntled HTC phone owner has started a petition on a consumer website called Groubal, which takes petitions directly to companies as a complaint on behalf of the consumers who sign them.
If, like me, you're unhappy about HTC's new policy of locking bootloaders to prevent people rooting and installing custom ROMs on their phones, then please go to this page and sign. It might actually force HTC to listen to its customers if we get enough signatures.
Thanks!
Thanks for the link.. signed and shared it everyway I could..

I think we should start some kinda' mass FUD against HTC. Something like - latest phones are locked because HTC wants to steal your data. Unethical, but serves them right - and will at least do some damage.
signed it too
You guys who have Twitter do what I did.. first write a tweet about the petition with the link and at the end add @htc
Also you can tweet again the same with adding mentions to Twitter accounts of known android forums or of tech blogs like engadget..
Spread the word ppl..

I have updated the Incredible S, and Sensation wikipedia pages - with the signed bootloader info.
Nice, they just posted this on their Twitter account.
"Thanks for the feedback, we're listening! We're reviewing our bootloader policy. Stay tuned here for more updates. http://on.fb.me/jog8Wa "
It's a start.. but that doesn't mean we should stop pursuing the matter.. it could take months for htc to make a move..

HEY ALL! I HAVE GREAT NEWS!
everyone must know allready about htc kaiser drivers missing blablabla anyway
I THINK THEY ARE COMING!
I sent a hell load of spam to htc tech support (well not a load, 3 or 4 emails, meh.)
Ive sent the htcclassaction petition url link.
Now i got a call (like 5 minutes ago at the time of writing) from htc, they asked me if they could record what i say and i agreed. Now he asked me what is wrong, what are the problems, i said slow 2d slow 3d blablabla .He said something the petition and said that he will pass the petition link and the record of our talking to the devs, and that i should wait and check regularly on htc.com device support for an update.
Woot?
Just so's ya know this has been done before and the President of HTC is well aware of the 3 year old petition.
****... i just fall for these things too easily
ya, would have been too nice ^^
Not going to get new drivers HTC have been aware from offset and still haven't propduced the driver.
Ok, I want to state first off, I haven't tried this "rom" (aka CM7 build). I have built roms for a WM phone before, but never for android.
That said, I don't know why this guy was banned. I'm not trying to get involved in any way. I noticed in his thread the mod stated he's not comfortable with someone cooking for a phone they don't own. I want to point out though, this would NOT be the first person to cook up things for this phone without owning a DInc. I do believe Kingxclick for one example never owned a DInc yet was cranking out kernals for it. I believe but not 100% sure that Ruby was started without owning a DInc also. I'm not *****ing, I'd LOVE to see more love for my DInc, but it seems kinda nuts to get upset over 1 person dev'n for a phone they don't own, but it's been perfectly ok for others to have done the same in the past. All I'm saying here is, if there's some other reason for the ban, that's fine. But the post in the thread implies it has to do with him cooking a rom when he doesn't own a DInc. If dev's aren't supposed to cook roms (or kernals) for phones they don't own, I think that it should be clearly stated somewhere. Might fix some confusion down the line.....
I completely agree. This is supposed to be a place for free thinking and free ideas. Who cares whether or not you own a device as long as you aren't intentionally trying to damage other peoples. We all know the risks of flashing something on our phones. I thought the point of this site was to promote thinking outside the box and doing what we want to with our bought and paid for devices. If that means using something someone built that doesn't own the device it was built for shouldn't that be our choice? Again if that wasn't the reason for the ban than disregard this statement.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I agree with both of these posts. Owning a device shouldn't be a pre-requisite for developing for it - there are plenty of people who do own the device who can test software for you.
As said above, if that wasn't the reason for the ban, disregard this.
Who is this about
HTC Incredible 2.3.1
Yea if he wants to make stuff for us who cares if he actually has the phone?
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
This about androidball?
HTC Incredible 2.3.1
I read on twitter that he was banned for multiple accounts, which he denies.
AndroidBall was banned for being a duplicate account of a banned user. Same goes for R2DoesInc. Against forum rules, plain and simple.
Thread closed.
The homebrew community may mourn HTC's Thunderbolt, Incredible S, Sensation and EVO 3D, but the company's controversial policy of locking bootloaders is no more. Following a tease yesterday, HTC CEO Peter Chou has decreed from on high -- namely, HTC's Facebook page -- that future devices will be open.
"There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we've listened. Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience."
We're holding out hope that this policy will also be retroactive, but this is very welcome news regardless. Ball's in your court, Motorola.

Thats so true if they want to stay in top three they got to be less strict
I've heard that motorola won't block own bootloader in years after 2011. I dream about unlocking mielstone bootloader, maybe dreams come true
I did some investigating and learned that HTC was pressured into the statement by the CEO in part with a Petition on the site groubal.com.
I have created a new petition on that site for the Vivid bootloader issue....

I don't own the vivid, but I seriously considered purchasing it until I found out that HTC is not only keeping the device locked down, but that they are doing so after giving their word that they'd open it up.
For that, I went out of my way to purchase the Vivid, open the box, use it for a while, and return it to AT&T as a defective unit. Hopefully, HTC gets it back and finds the note I left under the battery door: Keep your word and unlock these devices.
(As far as I'm concerned, if a company promises something with a product but fails to follow through, the product is defective.)
In addition, being that this device is being marketed in the United States of Litigation, HTC might have opened themselves to a lawsuit for falsely representing their products... (I'm no lawyer, but if their CEO said they would unlock the device, and anyone purchased based on that statement, I believe there is a class-action lawsuit just waiting to happen...)
Take care

Can we all go and like my comment on HTC's facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/HTC about a soon to be enacted class action lawsuit against HTC for their deceptive business practices which are costing us money (the 35 dollar return fee when we have to take our phones back after finding HTC will not unlock the bootloader as promised by the CEO).
i dont know if this is already well known but i just came across it. here is a petition for motorola mobility to unlock the bootloaders. sign if you like, i just did.

Sign my butt. This isn't going to work. People have been complaining about locked bootloaders on a plethora of Moto phones for years, and an online petition won't make any sort of difference.

I don't have any issue with the concept of this, and I signed it, although I don't think moto cares given the size of the actual modding population. However, why do people throw around the word 'rights' so much? Really, it's a right? No it's a want... I know I'll prolly get derided for this but still... Right?
This convo has been had millions of times. really doesnt need to be repeated to the same effect where it changes nothin
Agreed.
Noble intentions, wasted time.

I agree with you 100%.
I still signed.
That's how frustrated I feel at all this. I'm reminded of my time with the orginal milestone. Checking internet every day to see if someone fgured out how to shoehorn froyo onto the thing. For some reason I thought moto would change... maybe it was because they said they would.
Yeah its a long shot for this petition to do anything, I very sincerely doubt it will. But I would love to be wrong. It only takes two seconds to sign it.
Signed also
While I've signed the petition, I have a ready-made solution that nobody has seemed to mention yet... stop buying Motorola devices.
I've enjoyed Moto's offerings since the OG Droid days, mainly because of the superior build quality, but due to Moto's lock down on devices, and their lack of willingness to placate us, the way HTC has done, the D3 will be the last Motorola device I purchase. Let's face it, performance-wise, Moto doesn't build top-notch machines, the screen quality is sub par, and support is non-existent. Build quality is the ONLY thing they have going for them, and with Samsung making moves to improve their own build quality, I don't see any reason to stick around.
Motorola is not going to change their stance on this matter, and as such, the only way we can really make them listen, is by hitting them where it hurts...their wallets. I believe over 10,000 people have signed the petition (not a huge number, compared to global Moto sales), but 10,000 units at $150 each, equates to $1,500,000 in revenue. Again, that number may be small by comparison, but I'm sure a $1.5m decrease would get someone's attention.
My advice to anyone who's upset enough to sign this petition, is to move to a company with a better track record of being development friendly. Quad-core offerings are on the horizon, and a new Nexus device should be spotted around Christmas...I'll be saving my money, and WILL be jumping ship as soon as I can. The Moto journey has been "fun", but it's time to trade build quality for better performance and support. I'm done buying phones that are (essentially) dead on arrival, and obsolete within 3 months of release... I urge the rest of you to follow suit.
