[Q] install continium V5 with 3 button combo not working - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.Currently i am running continium V4 Android 2.2 .If i want to install another Foroyo rom it can be done via rom manager without 3 button combo.
Now i want to install gingerbread but i cant find any way to do it as all methods require 3 button combo to go to Download mode & recovery mode.
Actually i can go to download mode by a JIG.But recovery mode??????
Any alternate methods to update to gingerbread(continium V5)

I don't know how it does it, but I had a usb cable that had some bad terminals and when I plugged it into the phone when the phone was turned off, it went into recovery mode every time. I'm no electrical engineer so my theory had no basis but my thought is that the usb cable when coming from a charge dock has 2 pins for dc current, 1 positive and one negative. The 3 left (I think it's 5, not sure, not looking at one) must be for data transfer. Maybe 2 for synchronous travel and one for data corruption testing, not sure. Out of these pins, the only thing that makes sense to me that made it go into recovery was that one of the charge pins were not making contact, the positive or negative. I dont think any of the transfer pins would make a difference in this. Again, not sure if this is how it worked or not, just a theory. Maybe it can be replicated if recovery will help you, don't have any knowledge of CM.

Only rom in rom manager is cm7.
If you want to make the jump to gingerbread all you need is the jig one time to get into download mode and flash the gingerbread bootloaders, from there you will have a new working combo because the button combos are in the secondary bootloader.
Once on the gingerbread bootloaders
Vol up + power = recovery
Vol down + power = download
Thats it, one jig use...bootloader flash...working combo. easy.
You're welcome

Just to inform you, but after you flash the GB bootloaders, you cannot flash Cognition. It has a secondary bootloader in its flash package that will cause your your phone to turn into a paperweight. Why? Because you can't mix bootloaders. A Gingerbread Primary bootloader must have a Gingerbread secondary. The secondary in Cog isn't a GB bootloader. For that reason, you also can't flash the Odin w/3button fix until AFTER you have flashed eclair/froyo bootloaders with Odin. So, if you do go to GB, ask more questions before you flash back to JF6 stock. It could be the difference in a working phone and a brick.

You're welcome [/Last night i again tried to flash gingerbread boot loaders. Here are the steps i followed.
1)Went back to stock(JF6) by ODIN.Initially i was running Continuum V4(Themed).Actually i did'nt perform a full wipe.
2)Went into DOWNLOAD MODE through ADB.
3)followed instructions given on ""[Rom][2.3.3] « GR-12 » **5/4"" in first post
Instruction i followed were
Installation Instructions:
1. Download this package.
2. Open Odin3 1.7
3. Select the PDA, PHONE, CSC, and PIT files in their correct spots
4. Connect phone in download mode
5. Ensure that Auto-reboot and Re-Partition are both checked. These have a tendency to change after plugging the phone in, so double check before you hit start.
6. This is where the bootloader will be flashed, along with stock Gingerbread. Hit Start.
7. Allow the phone to boot.
After hitting the START BUTTON,It got stuck on ""DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET.And my cappy is soft bricked again.
Any help is highly appreciated if i am doing anything wrong.]

You have a wonky connection. Make sure your chord is good. Plug into the back of the pc, no front ports, if its in a back port already go ahead and switch it to another one on the back. Restart your computer and try again. No need to return to stock first you can flash gb from where you are ... If you get a good connection...

[May be ur rite.I'll buy a new cord.

One more thing i am using same cord for installing Foroyo roms and there is no problem.I'll post if i get it rite. Thanks
EDIT:SOLVED:
Hi all i just installed gingerbread. Now all of you installing gingerbreadWith 3 button combo not working here is what i did different.
1)Main point is i was going into DOWNLOAD mode by ADB.After that i was installing gingerbread bootloaders n boom mobile is SOFT BRICKED.
This happened atleast five times.
Today i prepared the jig with 3 100K resistors(Search XDA forum).Got my cappy into DOWNLOAD mode by jig and unbricked it.
Now note my cappy is in stock JF6.Again with jig got cappy into download mode and followed method posted on UTUBE by CONNECTION2005 and installed bootloaders which i did like a piece of cake.
then i installed kernal and....................
So main thing is DO NOT USE ADB TO GO TO DOWNLOAD MODE

[Q] Can't enter download mode after running Odin

Hello,
I verified that I am able to enter download mode by plugging in the USB cable while pressing both volume buttons with the device turned off. I also verified that I can enter recovery mode by pressing both volume buttons and the power button. So I am pretty sure that I know how to enter the modes.
I then ran the Odin version from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 (by mistake, I didn't know it differed from the one in http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-galaxy-s-how-to-install.html). I assume that simply overrode everything with the stock ROM instead because I did not get the chance to select the SpeedMod kernel.
However, after that the hotkey method was no longer working. I was only able to enter download and recovery mode using adb. I used this to flash SpeedMod using the correct Odin version from the SpeedMod page.
Then I proceeded by going into recovery mode and extracting captivate-efsbackup.zip. I went into download mode (again with adb, keys still didn't work) and flashed cm7-captivate-initial-kernel.tar.
Now, however, I'm in real trouble. I can enter neither recovery nor download mode. No matter if I use hotkeys or adb, the system reboots, but then just shows the "Galaxy S\n cyanogen^(mod)" image.
Anyone able to help? Why aren't the hotkeys working anymore after running Odin?
I have no explanationas to why buy do have a suggestion. Try the AIO tool box. If the phone boots, just enable usb debugging and follow instructions. You should probably use the 3 button fix option.
I recently had done a clean up of my cappy because after tons of flashes it had become a mess. After flashing back to stock I lost dl mode and recovery. Whipped out the AIO...ver.2.5 , booted phone, put in debug.. Reformated with 3 button and boom!, back in business. Be sure your net framework is current 4 version, install the C++ lib as siggested.
Took a likely pain in the ass and turned it into an inconvenience. Just follow the instructions...

First of all, what model of Captivate do you have (the model number is underneath your battery, on the phone itself. It will be a number between 1006-1014).
And I hope you do realise that CM7 is a particularly difficult (than standard) ROM to flash, and if you don't know what you're doing (or miss a step), you can perma-brick your phone easily.
If you can't get into Download Mode by any means, then the only last suggestion I can give you is to try a USB Jig (search around in the Captivate Forum here, you'll see what I mean).
Thanks for the suggestions. Here is how I recovered:
Download SpeedMod Kernel
Create a nandroid backup on a working phone, copy that over to the broken one
Copy zImage from SpeedMod kernel to SD on broken phone with adb
Enter shell mode on phone
Look into misc/recovery.fstab to figure out the name of the sdcard block device
Mount sdcard with `mount [blockdev] /sdcard`
Flash zImage with `flash_image boot /sdcard/zImage`
Flash nandroid backups with `flash_image {system, cache, datadata} /sdcard/{system,cache,datadata}.img` (but not data)
Leave the phone without battery for at least 1 and at most 6 hours (my phone appeared completely dead after this operation, not even adb shell access, so I went to bed frustrated)
Now you can boot into download mode again using "adb reboot download" (which didn't work when running the CM7 kernel)
Use One Click Odin to revert to stock firmware
Install 3ButtonFix to get combos working again
Note that the original problem that caused all the trouble was that flashing the stock ROM with Odin One-Click disables the 3 Button combos. You have to use the 3ButtonFix to get it working again.
Nikratio please help me i was updating samsung galaxy 5 2.1 eclair to 2.2 froyo but when i was using odin then it stops working and i unplug the device the after that phone is not getting switched on and even not getting is recovery mode ... m very sad and even dnt have the backup of any phone and none of my frnd have android phones so that i have backup please help me bro m afraid of my mom too coz i just bought it few time back please hem me bro

Bricked my phone while flashing from Phoenix to stock 2.3.3

Hi everyone! I have Captivate(1008 batch) with Phoenix Ultimate firmware. Today I tried to flash it with batch Gingerbread. Seems like my mistake was that I forgot to turn off lagfix. Odin halted. Now I'm getting "phone-!-PC" screen each time I connect phone to PC...
I can not get cappy into download mobe(tried all 3 ways)
Odin doesn't see phone...
Do I have any chaces to repair my phone or it's a brick? Is there a chance that jig will help?
There's a new thread in the dev section about a one click unbrick from that screen. I read that it's just downlad the software, plug in phone and click run.
AdamOutler made this -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310
Ok, thanks I'll try that! BTW which fimware should I flash if my cappy is back to download mode? As I understand Phoenix formated my phone memory into ext4 filesystem. Is that possible to flash stock Gingerbread on ext4 filesystem?
UPD: Unfortunately software unbrick doesn't help I got "Phone is not connected" message. My PC doesn't see phone at all
The Jig should work, assuming you don't have mixed bootloaders. If you do have mixed bootloaders, JTAG service will be what you need.
If you do manage to get back to download mode, use the JF6 Odin 1-click.
You can get it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Here's another suggestion that I did with a 1008 that I had a while back. open Odin 1 click to prepare for download mode. (make sure it's not one with the three button fix - if you one click from gingerbread to 3 button fix stock, it is a certain hard brick).
Remove battery, count to 10, replace battery.
hold the vol up and vol down buttons at the same time until you see the screen flash. It should flash every 5-7 seconds as long as you continiuosly hold the buttons.
When you see the screen flash, insert usb cord (with it already connected to computer).
This got me to download mode. It mat take a few tries. sometimes it's a challenge to get to DL mode from this screen. This procedure worked on my 1008. Hope it works.
A jig may work too, but it n ever worked for me on the 1008.
Thank you guys. Hope your suggestions will help!
With the phone and PC screen the Jig will work for sure try and make one or u can buy it.
You can also try this, Remove the battery open odin 1 cick and plug the cable to the usb port at the back of the PC and then the phone and now put the battery see if the odin lits up if yes you are done.
I solved the problem(even without jig). So writing my solution, hope this will help someone.
1) I went home to use another PC. Installed Samsung drivers there.
2) I tried different key combos. Vol Up + Vol Down didn't worked but Vol Down + USB entered Download mode.
3) One guy from russian android forum told me to try with Odin 1 click 2.1 stock firmware. Only this version of firmware connected to my soft bricked phone.
One more time thanks everyone for your replies
For future reference.
If your phone turns on (you can see anything on the screen), then you do not have a perminate brick, and a jig will work.
And your filesystem/lagfix does not matter with odin 1click. It resets everything to the way it came, nomater what you came from. (It even works on cm7 witch repartisioned it and used MTD).
I have the same problem as you. I can't get get the one-click unbrick to work (doesn't detect a device). I ordered a jig yesterday, hopefully it comes soon. I have a 1010 though, which I heard had more problems than others.
use a JIG
i made my custom JIG for 60 cents, save my Cappy after a failed cyanogen install.

[Q] What kind of brick would this be considered and steps to fix it

My Captivate is currently in a state where it can boot up and it reaches the Cognition boot screen and does nothing further. When trying to use the 2 button+usb cord method to enter download mode the phone loads the charging battery but the animation is frozen.
Would this be considered a soft or hard brick? I'm not familiar with the factors that constitute the differences between the two. Is is a soft brick because the phone can still turn on or is it a hard brick because download mode is unreachable?
I was a user of Cognition 5 v1.00 but as support of the rom by the developer seemed to waiver I felt myself looking for a new GB Rom for my phone. I first flashed Cognition 4.5.3 onto my phone in order to have a stable Rom on my phone until I could decide upon the GB Rom I wanted to try. I decided to flash CM7 and began following the steps outlined in the thread. I formatted my system, data, and cache partitions but upon reboot I reached the point where I am currently.
I have not yet tried the jig as I do not have it on hand at my school apartment. Button combos, the usb cord, and the one click unbrick have not solved the problem and I would like to know if their are any other methods I could use to enter download mode until I am able to procure my jig and try that method.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Soft Bricked
You are whats considered soft bricked. Id recommend pulling out battery, SIM and SD. Open odin with with admin rights. Plug your phone to the computer, press volume up and down and insert battery. If that doesn't work then I would suggest making/buying a jig and flash back to stock (eclair, froyo or GB). As to how to get CM7 to work I can't offer any help since i haven't used it in a while and flashing method changed. I can recommend Atomic Fusion, KF1 based and very nice (after u theme it)
Clay
+1 I agree with prbassplayer. You have to get into dl mode and if none of the key combos work, then a jig is probably the only way. I use one and it works great in exactly the situation you seem to be in.
edit: Sorry for the double post, forget this and read next. :-/

You might have crossed up some files and such from going back and forth between GB and Eclair. So need to flash back to stock and start over with fresh install.
If you're still interested in CM7, after rooting, you can install Rom Manager and follow the install process in the CM7 OP or check out their website, it'll walk you thru the whole thing.
Hope this helps

Thank you for the input. At this point it seems that the jig is the only option as I've already tried the usb cord volume up and down process to no avail. I already own a jig, I just need to find a way to my parents house to go grab it.
They aren't hard to make to be honest and if u have a micro usb cable u don't care for it only cost w/e resistors cost for you there.
Using the SDK to use adb commands to get into download mode isn't an option as mentioned in this thread here?

If you've already installed the GB bootloaders, the button combination has changed. I believe it is just volume down-power for gingerbread. Try that or volume up-power then release once the logo starts to see if that gets you into download or recovery.

No on Cog it is not. You can use the 3 button method just fine.
FYI GB bootloaders are not designed for CM7. CM7 used Froyo based bootloaders for its roms.

[Q] amateur in need of help!

I followed instructions on a link via the cyanogenmod website, to try and get cm7 on my phone. The instructions were on a wiki website which I now know is not reliable!
I got to the stage "flashing cyanagonmod" to find out that the zip files had to be in the internal sd card BEFORE starting the whole process!
I can still access download mode and recovery. But my phone gets stuck on the "Samsung galaxy i9000" intro screen.
I tried restoring and factory reset but still no joy...
any help is very appreciated!
Download some odin flashable ROM, and flash that in download mode.
where do I find an odin ROM and how do I know which one to use?
corrected: samfirmware.com
If you want a custom rom, then look through here however your going to have to read which is odin flashable...
This is a guide and rom i have used myself. Click here
BTW this is obviously assuming you are on SGS I9000 the second link should be quite clear...

Thanks for your post. Only problem is ODin doesn't recognise when my phone is plugged in? i.e. there isn't that yellow box showing...help!
Ok so im guessing your trying the 3 button combo for download mode (vol up + home + power). Alternatives to force download is a homemade jig, which is easily obtainable from ebay for a relatively cheap price. Other ways you can try is holding the combo for as long as you can, some have reported it may even work after 3 mins. Another method is hold the combo and then whilst holding it insert the battery. Also the last method but have the usb plugged into with odin open, then put the battery in. Many many ways... just search
Is that what you mean or that you CAN get to download mode and Odin and the computer does NOT recognise when you plug it in. If this is try re-installing the drivers using kies, its under the tools menu. Try a different version of odin, plug phone in then try the combo (with battery already in, then without). Have you closed all Kies applications background processes? (use task manager in windows). Use another computer..
Also have you read this
Edit: Forgot to add, can you get into Recovery? Then use your nandroid backup which you should always do before flashing.. If you dont have a back up try use ADB to force download mode "adb reboot download"
Need to know what options you have available in-order to help, what can you do? Is there any response from your phone with pressing buttons or key combinations??

Another brick issue I897

I was trying different roms and when i moved to cm7 i found that my download mode is not working through adb and key combination plus usb plug in methods. so in recovery mode i tried to install some other rom and after 2-3 tries to install the rom i got in position that when i reboot my cappy, it shows att logo screen and then it stucks there. when it is off and put usb cable in it, it show circles (the same for charging) but not the battery signal.
i made a usb jig and it does not seem to work. i hv checked with multimeter that when i connect the jib it provides 296k ohm on the pins 4-5. (i hv opened the device and checked the jig resistance while connected). i am considering the 4-5 pins are the closest to microphone jack
adams detect mode does not detect device even in ubuntu. lsbusb 1.0 does not show any device for samsung etc. it only shows my mouse etc.
windows (7 64bit )does not detect it to be connected.
As i have opened the device for un-brickable mod but it seems to be impossible for me to do it myself. i live in bahrain (gulf). it is very small place to find some good soldering skill guy. it will be very costly and time consuming it to send it to someone in usa to do mod for me.
please help me regarding this.
You don't need Jtag or UBM. You are just soft bricked. Although 296 should be enough it isn't always the case for all phones 300-307 is the recommended resistance. Re-make your jig, make sure your fingers do not touch the resistor's metal, or make one soldered up and isolated.
thanks for the reply. i will try to make another jig. but the thing is, I tried the same resistor few months back with a rough jig and at that time it worked for me and some of my friend's device. but this time it is not working for me and for the vibrant of my friend. he also has cm7 installed and adb reboot download is not working for him ( it just reboots no download mode). Otherwise his device is working properly.
i changed the resistors (3 X 100k resistors before it was only one 1 X 300k resistor) so i got 300K Ohm and my device got in download mode. i installed some stock rom (JF6) and then moved to cm7 and then ics port by teamhacksung. but my devices does not go to download mode using key combination + usb plug in. how can i fix it? which rom i shod install to fix it? on reboot it goes to recovery mode not normal reboot. how can i fix it?
Flash GB bootloaders. (Assuming it works on that ICS port) if not use the 3 button fix.

On a side note. Do you mean to say when you hit reboot it goes in to recovery? or that it only has recovery option on the power menu?
All you have to do is order the download Jig from MobileTechVideos. I bought one and as soon as you plug it in, it goes straight to download mode. Bricked or not. You can re-flash with stock Odin afterwords. Cheap easy Fix. $8.00 US Currency, takes only a couple days to get there.
mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-download-mode-jig/
Don't get me wrong If you want to buy one made do it in Mobiletechvideos. But in my case it's $11 and at the time of need I wasn't going to wait 1+ weeks for it. But each their own. Like i said IF you are going to buy one made get it from josh.
Anyway thanks guys as i mentioned that my jig worked. i updated to ics. After that I found that i was unable to go in download mode using key combination plus usb cable plug in method so i went back to one click stock jf6 (using jig download mode) and applied 3 button fix patch. so it fixed my recovery and download mode options with key combinations. now i m again at cm7. Anybody has 3 button fix patch for gb bootloaders? how can i check what is my bootloader (eclair / froyo / gb)?
Captivate Connection Issues and Download Mode Help
PS when coming OFF of CM7 or MIUI you must flash back to stock with a one-click or with odin flasher WITH a pit file and re-partition checked. As CM7 uses a different partitoning table and other roms will not boot.

Gingerbread bootloaders do not need 3 button fix (that will hardbrick it). There isn't a real way to test if you have I897 GB bootloaders. Just flash the BL package in dev and you should be golden. Just remember when ever you flash to stock use a package without booloaders.
