Bricked my phone while flashing from Phoenix to stock 2.3.3 - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone! I have Captivate(1008 batch) with Phoenix Ultimate firmware. Today I tried to flash it with batch Gingerbread. Seems like my mistake was that I forgot to turn off lagfix. Odin halted. Now I'm getting "phone-!-PC" screen each time I connect phone to PC...
I can not get cappy into download mobe(tried all 3 ways)
Odin doesn't see phone...
Do I have any chaces to repair my phone or it's a brick? Is there a chance that jig will help?

There's a new thread in the dev section about a one click unbrick from that screen. I read that it's just downlad the software, plug in phone and click run.
AdamOutler made this -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310

Ok, thanks I'll try that! BTW which fimware should I flash if my cappy is back to download mode? As I understand Phoenix formated my phone memory into ext4 filesystem. Is that possible to flash stock Gingerbread on ext4 filesystem?
UPD: Unfortunately software unbrick doesn't help I got "Phone is not connected" message. My PC doesn't see phone at all

The Jig should work, assuming you don't have mixed bootloaders. If you do have mixed bootloaders, JTAG service will be what you need.
If you do manage to get back to download mode, use the JF6 Odin 1-click.
You can get it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989

Here's another suggestion that I did with a 1008 that I had a while back. open Odin 1 click to prepare for download mode. (make sure it's not one with the three button fix - if you one click from gingerbread to 3 button fix stock, it is a certain hard brick).
Remove battery, count to 10, replace battery.
hold the vol up and vol down buttons at the same time until you see the screen flash. It should flash every 5-7 seconds as long as you continiuosly hold the buttons.
When you see the screen flash, insert usb cord (with it already connected to computer).
This got me to download mode. It mat take a few tries. sometimes it's a challenge to get to DL mode from this screen. This procedure worked on my 1008. Hope it works.
A jig may work too, but it n ever worked for me on the 1008.

Thank you guys. Hope your suggestions will help!

With the phone and PC screen the Jig will work for sure try and make one or u can buy it.
You can also try this, Remove the battery open odin 1 cick and plug the cable to the usb port at the back of the PC and then the phone and now put the battery see if the odin lits up if yes you are done.

I solved the problem(even without jig). So writing my solution, hope this will help someone.
1) I went home to use another PC. Installed Samsung drivers there.
2) I tried different key combos. Vol Up + Vol Down didn't worked but Vol Down + USB entered Download mode.
3) One guy from russian android forum told me to try with Odin 1 click 2.1 stock firmware. Only this version of firmware connected to my soft bricked phone.
One more time thanks everyone for your replies

For future reference.
If your phone turns on (you can see anything on the screen), then you do not have a perminate brick, and a jig will work.
And your filesystem/lagfix does not matter with odin 1click. It resets everything to the way it came, nomater what you came from. (It even works on cm7 witch repartisioned it and used MTD).

I have the same problem as you. I can't get get the one-click unbrick to work (doesn't detect a device). I ordered a jig yesterday, hopefully it comes soon. I have a 1010 though, which I heard had more problems than others.

use a JIG
i made my custom JIG for 60 cents, save my Cappy after a failed cyanogen install.

[Q] Just bricked my phone...

I was flashing EZ base and not paying attention (see attachedfile).
Now my SGS doesnt even respond to the power button! Is there ANYTHING I can do??
Please help
Plug the phone into the usb port then switch on phone. Does the pc detect a device?
i think i know you mate?
I recently soft bricked my phone and couldn't get into download mode the normal way.
What worked was holding the vol down button and the home button in (not the power button) and then plugging it into USB while holding them in. The USB power basically takes the role of pressing the power button.
I hope it works, good luck!
sorry mate but i just cant figure out how you could be so clumsy... so many times it is stated that you must be very careful with odin....
that is not helping, is there anything that can be done in the situation?

Sorry mate, I just can't figure out why you would post a such a useless unhelpful reply. I flash my phone on a regular basis with CM7/MIUI, mistakes can happen!
To everyone else, thanks, I got it working.... no idea but I read some bricked threads and tried out something... took the battery out, kept hammering the power button whilst putting the battery in with vol down and managed to get into DL mode.
Phew!
Hope you have your efs folder backed up. The SGS is hard to brick and one of the phones that can be unbricked easily. The only problem is with the efs (the files inside the efs folder stores your product code and the imei number.)
Just wanted to bring this to your notice if you haven't done it yet.
just bricked a samsung gt-i9000. Hopefully I can get help to recover. I made several mistakes or false assumptions.
1. I could never get the phone to boot into recovery or download mode by itself. (this is my wife's phone -uh oh - as my phone I had no problem doing this). But I installed adb sdk and could reboot it into recover or download that way, so went ahead with flash.
2. I was using an older perhaps guide to flashing MIUI which had different file names that no longer seem to exist but double checked a few places and got current version numbers on MIUI and cm7 kernel and etc., but I used a newer version of ODIN 1.82 instead of the 1.7. Thought that wouldn't matter but in my bricking searches found that it may be an issue.
So now I have the icon of ..phone ! computer... and no way of getting into download mode as adb can't see the device. Hopefully there is a way - I've tried the suggestions above but they aren't working. I hope as last resort I can make the jig I've seen mentioned.. but any other methods?
/jd
[edit] these two phones were purchased at the same time and have same firmwares. I did back up efs from my phone, and in this process of flashing wife's phone had uploaded the galaxy_efs_backup file but didn't get a chance for it to work. If efs is borked, can I use the one from my phone or are they unique to each device? (assuming I can unbrick). [/edit]

i got the semi brick icon once
i pressed vol down, home, then power and held them together until the phone booted once, then once more, then once more (I kept holding them for about 40 seconds I guess). Then took the battery out for a minute, then while holding all 3 buttons together, put it back in (this is tricky, you need to practice or have someone else to help you) and did another 40 second loops. Finally took the battery out, put it back in and tried download mode and it worked.
But I could get download mode before I bricked it...
thanks allotrios,
Gave it a valiant try and no luck. I'm going to have to figure out the jig I guess - I can't figure out how they plug in those largish looking usb jigs into that tiny proprietary (looking) usb port on the i9000. Videos say a cheap micro usb cable but I think i may have to cut into my SGS charging/usb cable. But doesn't look like the cables on videos/pics.

Hang on, one more thing you can try, worked for me just last weekend....
"Leave Odin Open. Then Plug the USB. While the USB is plugged in and Odin running press and hold volume down + Home + Power. Once the black screen comes release the Power Button. It will get to the download mode"
Worked like a charm, got it from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13630631#post13630631
If it works for you make sure you hit the thanks button of the guy that originally posted it
If you really need a JIG try this http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10031 with one of these http://parts.digikey.com/1/parts/764289-res-301k-ohm-1-4w-1-metal-film-mfr-25fbf-301k.html

Gave it a go and no luck. I was wondering if Odin v1.82 was a problem so dl'd and used Odin v1.3 (says GT-P1000 on the title bar of it) but didn't seem to matter. Tried both versions.
I had Odin running, plugged in the phone which brought up the "brick" icons, then held down the 3 buttons until it rebooted (black screen came on) and released power, still holding other two buttons. Nothing - just the icons of death. I'm very rural so have parts coming for a jig - might have them by Monday evening or mid-week. Lucky that the phone was really slow and buggy (build XXJP2) so wife didn't like it at all. She wants an iphone so was hoping to spiff this one up to curtail that move. /jd
[edit] My research says that some of these phones have a bad secondary bootloader that prevents the 3-button technique. Not sure if that is inclusive of all these methods mentioned in this thread - that they simply won't work on a phone with the bad bootloader or whether these methods have sometimes overcome that limitation. But I've found a few links to fix it if I can get the phone back from the dead..
My phone is rooted, how can find efs folder and can I save a backup my computer hard drive?
I do odin flashing, in case something goes wrong.

hey dude just download root explorer then open it u will find the efs folder in it
presss the efs folder for a second then there will be a popup in that u will find copy
just copy it and paste it in ur sd card
then connect ur phone to pc then u will find that efs folder
then just copy it to ur pc
Just a note to add data points on the bricking from my situation.
I read somewhere that a guy got his phone in download mode by plugging it into a bluetooth headset without it plugged into the charger. He figured it had built in resistance to help detect which device it was being plugged into and voila! he got download mode. (People in that thread asked which headset and he hadn't replied at that point so I don't know which).
I misread that at first to read a guy plugged the phone into his charger so I tried it (3 button combo and variations) and of course didn't work. But I was sitting there thinking about something else holding down the buttons and all of a sudden got it into download mode. The computers wouldn't recognize it though. So no luck - figured I had a jig coming so no biggy. Pulled the battery and tried again and it worked. This time I got into a download mode that the computer recognized.
So I flashed a kernel and got a "higher level" brick - got to first boot screen with words - but it just sat there vibrating. So tried a JVH single tar file an then got a boot loop up through the boot animations and noise. So am progressing - think I will try getting back to stock Froyo from samfirmware.com and see what goes from there. /jd

[Q] install continium V5 with 3 button combo not working

Hi.Currently i am running continium V4 Android 2.2 .If i want to install another Foroyo rom it can be done via rom manager without 3 button combo.
Now i want to install gingerbread but i cant find any way to do it as all methods require 3 button combo to go to Download mode & recovery mode.
Actually i can go to download mode by a JIG.But recovery mode??????
Any alternate methods to update to gingerbread(continium V5)
I don't know how it does it, but I had a usb cable that had some bad terminals and when I plugged it into the phone when the phone was turned off, it went into recovery mode every time. I'm no electrical engineer so my theory had no basis but my thought is that the usb cable when coming from a charge dock has 2 pins for dc current, 1 positive and one negative. The 3 left (I think it's 5, not sure, not looking at one) must be for data transfer. Maybe 2 for synchronous travel and one for data corruption testing, not sure. Out of these pins, the only thing that makes sense to me that made it go into recovery was that one of the charge pins were not making contact, the positive or negative. I dont think any of the transfer pins would make a difference in this. Again, not sure if this is how it worked or not, just a theory. Maybe it can be replicated if recovery will help you, don't have any knowledge of CM.

Only rom in rom manager is cm7.
If you want to make the jump to gingerbread all you need is the jig one time to get into download mode and flash the gingerbread bootloaders, from there you will have a new working combo because the button combos are in the secondary bootloader.
Once on the gingerbread bootloaders
Vol up + power = recovery
Vol down + power = download
Thats it, one jig use...bootloader flash...working combo. easy.
You're welcome

Just to inform you, but after you flash the GB bootloaders, you cannot flash Cognition. It has a secondary bootloader in its flash package that will cause your your phone to turn into a paperweight. Why? Because you can't mix bootloaders. A Gingerbread Primary bootloader must have a Gingerbread secondary. The secondary in Cog isn't a GB bootloader. For that reason, you also can't flash the Odin w/3button fix until AFTER you have flashed eclair/froyo bootloaders with Odin. So, if you do go to GB, ask more questions before you flash back to JF6 stock. It could be the difference in a working phone and a brick.

You're welcome [/Last night i again tried to flash gingerbread boot loaders. Here are the steps i followed.
1)Went back to stock(JF6) by ODIN.Initially i was running Continuum V4(Themed).Actually i did'nt perform a full wipe.
2)Went into DOWNLOAD MODE through ADB.
3)followed instructions given on ""[Rom][2.3.3] « GR-12 » **5/4"" in first post
Instruction i followed were
Installation Instructions:
1. Download this package.
2. Open Odin3 1.7
3. Select the PDA, PHONE, CSC, and PIT files in their correct spots
4. Connect phone in download mode
5. Ensure that Auto-reboot and Re-Partition are both checked. These have a tendency to change after plugging the phone in, so double check before you hit start.
6. This is where the bootloader will be flashed, along with stock Gingerbread. Hit Start.
7. Allow the phone to boot.
After hitting the START BUTTON,It got stuck on ""DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET.And my cappy is soft bricked again.
Any help is highly appreciated if i am doing anything wrong.]

You have a wonky connection. Make sure your chord is good. Plug into the back of the pc, no front ports, if its in a back port already go ahead and switch it to another one on the back. Restart your computer and try again. No need to return to stock first you can flash gb from where you are ... If you get a good connection...

[May be ur rite.I'll buy a new cord.
Another reason may be that i am going to download mode by ADB.Next time i will go to download mode by JIG.
One more thing i am using same cord for installing Foroyo roms and there is no problem.I'll post if i get it rite. Thanks
EDIT:SOLVED:
Hi all i just installed gingerbread. Now all of you installing gingerbreadWith 3 button combo not working here is what i did different.
1)Main point is i was going into DOWNLOAD mode by ADB.After that i was installing gingerbread bootloaders n boom mobile is SOFT BRICKED.
This happened atleast five times.
Today i prepared the jig with 3 100K resistors(Search XDA forum).Got my cappy into DOWNLOAD mode by jig and unbricked it.
Now note my cappy is in stock JF6.Again with jig got cappy into download mode and followed method posted on UTUBE by CONNECTION2005 and installed bootloaders which i did like a piece of cake.
then i installed kernal and....................
So main thing is DO NOT USE ADB TO GO TO DOWNLOAD MODE

[Q] Bricked question (yes I've checked other threads!)

OK. . .so I was trying to follow the steps for Cog v5, and while flashing the beta2 kernel I screwed something up. I was starting from fresh new Froyo 2.2 straight out of the box. Now, I can get to Download on the device, but the PC (Win7x64)will not recognize my device in Download. When the phone tries to boot (NOT connected to USB), it hits the AT&T splash screen and then the screen is just a jumbled mess of colorful static. this loop continues on forever. If I connect the USB while this is happening, the PC and Odin briefly recognize the device (but not long enough to Start or do a Master Clear. I've read MANY other threads and I'm hoping that the statements others have made about "if you can see AT&T screen, you can unbrick", "if you can get to Download, you can unbrick".
TIA for any help

Sounds like you either have the 2.2 bootloaders still and the rom was a 2.3 version. I have seen comments by others about it exactly and they hadn't flashed the gingerbread 2.3 bootloaders. You may have two issues also, 1 being still having 2.2 bootloaders and 2 that you now have the 2.3 kernel but NO ROM yet. Just keep trying to first get back to the 2.2 bootloaders safely and start all over. DO NOT FLASH ANYTHING THAT HAS THE THREE BUTTON FIX. YOU MAY HAVE A PERMENENT BRICK IF YOU HAVE THE GINGERBREAD (I9000) BOOTLOADERS. Flash with the 2.1 Odin 1CLICK that will replace the TWO BOOTLOADERS correctly. Then you can use DGs 1Click gingerbread for the ATT Gingerbread bootloaders. This will allow you to then install any I897 gingerbread rom, I897 froyo rom, I9000 Gingerbread rom.

See if you can still get in to Download mode. If you can, you will be able to return to stock and try again.
1.) Start Odin JF6 One-Click
2.) Attach USB cord to the most stable port on your PC, make SURE you won't accidentally pull it out!
3.) While holding down VOL UP + VOL DOWN buttons at the same time, plug in the USB cord
If you see the android digging, you are golden. Odin should fill in the one box with a yellow message, now click Start, and pat yourself on the back for purchasing one of the most brick-proof phones around. If this does NOT work, try AGAIN, but this time pull the battery out - then plug in the USB - then hold VOL UP + DOWN - THEN pop battery back in. Keep in mind that button combo is for 2.1/2.2 bootloaders. If you managed to get a 2.3 bootloader on there, the button combo is just the VOL DOWN button by itself. Keep in mind, Odin can be VERY picky, I need to restart it in between every attempt, so make sure you are closing and restarting Odin in between tries!
If none of these work, chances are your phone is bricked, but there is STILL the option of JTAG - send connextion2005 a PM and see if it would help.
I appreciate the replies! I was getting desparate because I was down the beach with only my laptop. Just got back and tried connecting to my desktop and Bingo!, Odin recognized my phone! I don't know why, but the USBs (all 3 of them) on my laptop wouldn't work. I've got a functioning phone again. wheeewww
Thanks again for the help.
Before Jtag try to make or buy a Jig. It will force your phone in to download mode. Even if the screen doesn't say Download mode have Odin open just in case. A easy way to make a Jig is here. You can probably buy one for about $10 else where but this will probably be faster.

Interesting Problem with Cappy

I've Had my cappy for something over a year and up until i finally got a working jig it was out of commision for about a month, Then all was saved with the jig and i reflashed stock and started from scratch trying new roms, Then, when trying to go from stock to apex using their own odin flashers, Then when it went back into recovery i hit reboot to begin using CWM. Then all of a sudden, The Gingerbread version of the softbrick screen comes up, Phone----!-----Computer. No worries i have my jig, then when i remove the battery, wait and put the jig back in . . . the phone just shows me a bricked screen again, with a jig i know worked. What have i done?

If by "bricked screen" you mean the Phone--!--Computer screen, you should be able flash back from that screen. In theory, ODIN should recognize your phone at that screen in a manner similar to the way it recognizes it at the normal download mode screen.
As long as you see the computer/phone symbol you should be able to get it reflashed with the J6 Oneclick. If it never appears in ODIN try all of your USB ports. Odin only sees my phone on the two rear ports, go figure.
As far as getting the yellow download screen goes you might consider some other key combos before you declare it non-functioning. Did you flash it back to stock J6? If so, did the 3-button stop working? That may be your issue. Also, you may have put boot loaders on it from another device such as an I9000 and changed the key combo while flashing another ROM. Try battery pull/replace with vol up and USB, vol down and usb, both up/down with USB and see if any of those work.

Hi everyone. Im not normally in this section as i have an x8 but my friend has seen all the roms, mods and updates ive done so he tried to do it to his galaxy s i9000 without rooting or unlocking his bootloader. I asked him what he did he said he just tried to update software with keis but now it wont turn on just white screen with a red triangle in the middle i hope its download mode as i dont have a galaxy i dont really no but the battery has died and it wont charge im guessing hes damaged the bootloader am i right and if so whats the best corse of action to tepair it. Thanks.
You can check if it is in download mode by pluggin it in pc with odin. See the wiki page what it says about soft brick.
Soft-Bricked
After flashing a rom you might not be able to enter the Download Mode by pressing Volume Down + Home + Power. In this case a so called 'JIG' would be helpfull.
You could build it on your own: [HOWTO] [REF] Get Download Mode without 3-button combo using homemade JIG
... or buy a preassembled one on a well known marketplace.Hint: There is no difference between a JIG for Samsung S/S2 or S-Plus.
See if you can go into d0wnload mode with vol down home and power. If that works go and try to find the stock firmware for the phone and download and extract. Download odin and put csc pda and phone/modem in there rightful places. 512 pit in pit section. Pit usually comes with odin download. If not find it somewhere. Repartition checked and hit start. It should reboot when done. It will problaby take a couple of min to boot but be patient. If it starts to go into boot loop put back into download mode again and reflash. Its very hard to mess up the phone to where you cant fix it. So relax and watch tuts or whatever helps you best. I know of a link i that i will find and post for you when i do.

DEAD bricked phone
So, my friend's phone (hopefully she'll stay my friend after this) was turning itself on and off all on it's own. So I (no good deed goes unpunished) suggested that I will upgrade her firmware for her. She had 2.3.3 firmware. I downloaded the odin1.7 as well as a package of all the info for 2.3.5 firmware upgrade. I flashed the phone- originally only using the PDA option with a file called: CODE_I9000XXJVS_CL565837_REV03_user_low_ship
It worked, the phone restarted and showed the firmware as being 2.3.5.
I don't know why, but I thought it would be a good idea to update the CSC and the pit and the modem as well- so I did that. when this was finished - though odin said that the flashing was successful the phone is completely unresponsive. The computer doesn't recognize it, it doesn't show any signs of life at all- like it's in the dark ages and there is no electricity in it.
HELP!!!
First question: do you think a jig will work? how dangerous is it?
second question: is there any other option to try that I haven't come across other than changing the motherboard, and if there isn't do you know where I can get one, bear in mind I live in Israel.
Please e-mail me a copy of the response to [email protected] if you can...
Odin dosnt pick it up atall plus the batteries dead aswell now and the stupid thing wont charge so i cant evan try any thing till i find away or some one to charge it but thanks for the tips.

Try to recharge the battery from other phone or use another battery.
Check whether you have the download mode working. (Home+Power+Volume down)
If yes, put phone in download mode and flash Darky RE or any other Rom via ODIN. Try to get the recovery mod after rooting and then try ROMs.
Or try restarting the phone it may work without update also. Long press power in download mode restarts the phone. However be careful.
What is the status of the device can you go to download mode
Post your firmware files name and how you choose in the odin flasher.
Dont try anything crazy you will bricked your device more:banghead:

Alternate way to Download mode
Hi gavster26
I have been there with a buddy's phone... not a nice place.
Found a link showing this other trick ... but you have to trial and error this one on the different combos:
1. Phone off
2. USB cable pluged in
3. Odin running
4. Down (or Up - test both) Volume button + Home button + plug in the USB cable.
This booted my dead "bricked" phone into download mode.
Try it.
