I followed instructions on a link via the cyanogenmod website, to try and get cm7 on my phone. The instructions were on a wiki website which I now know is not reliable!
I got to the stage "flashing cyanagonmod" to find out that the zip files had to be in the internal sd card BEFORE starting the whole process!
I can still access download mode and recovery. But my phone gets stuck on the "Samsung galaxy i9000" intro screen.
I tried restoring and factory reset but still no joy...
any help is very appreciated!
Download some odin flashable ROM, and flash that in download mode.
where do I find an odin ROM and how do I know which one to use?
corrected: samfirmware.com
If you want a custom rom, then look through here however your going to have to read which is odin flashable...
This is a guide and rom i have used myself. Click here
BTW this is obviously assuming you are on SGS I9000 the second link should be quite clear...
here's a nice link to finding stock firmwares and using Odin:

Thanks for your post. Only problem is ODin doesn't recognise when my phone is plugged in? i.e. there isn't that yellow box showing...help!
Ok so im guessing your trying the 3 button combo for download mode (vol up + home + power). Alternatives to force download is a homemade jig, which is easily obtainable from ebay for a relatively cheap price. Other ways you can try is holding the combo for as long as you can, some have reported it may even work after 3 mins. Another method is hold the combo and then whilst holding it insert the battery. Also the last method but have the usb plugged into with odin open, then put the battery in. Many many ways... just search
Is that what you mean or that you CAN get to download mode and Odin and the computer does NOT recognise when you plug it in. If this is try re-installing the drivers using kies, its under the tools menu. Try a different version of odin, plug phone in then try the combo (with battery already in, then without). Have you closed all Kies applications background processes? (use task manager in windows). Use another computer..
Also have you read this
Edit: Forgot to add, can you get into Recovery? Then use your nandroid backup which you should always do before flashing.. If you dont have a back up try use ADB to force download mode "adb reboot download"
Need to know what options you have available in-order to help, what can you do? Is there any response from your phone with pressing buttons or key combinations??

copy_common_data
then it stalls.. my power button doesnt work to reboot system now...
Even though odin recognizes i hit start and nothing happens..
can anyone help.. i will donate and make it worth your time..
No you didn't brick your phone, you need to follow the I9000 guide in the stickied threads. You need to load a Captivate kernel before fully rebooting your phone.
First off get your phone back into download mode. Pull battery and usb cable, restart Odin, then follow this method to get you into download mode, put in battery, hold down both volume buttons, keep holding them and plug in the USB cable.
First when you flash a I9000 rom make sure you uncheck autoreboot on Odin.
When this done when you flash the Rom it will say Restet in Odin. At that time pull your battery and USB cable.
Restart Odin and load the Captivate kernel. Put you battery in, hold both volume buttons, keep them held and plug in the USB cable, should go into download mode. Start Odin, and it should be fine to let it autoreboot.
I missed something it will be in the stickied thread.

can you clear something up is Android System Recovery the same as download mode??
ok this thread can be deleted.. im a noob.. kjpdx throw me a link to donate.. i figured it out by myself but atleast you replied..
Two different modes. Download mode shows an Android holding a shovel and Recovery mode is where you would install update.zips.
Needs to be in Download mode when installing roms and kernels with Odin.

Hi:
I have the same problem of my Galaxy S. It is stuck in this screen saying
copy_multi_carrier from: ATT
multicsc : can not access to /system/csc/ATT/system/
etc. etc.
I boot it to the download mode as instruction, but the Kies always shows connecting device, and it never gets connected. The Odin shows no com port or device for me to load the firmware. Can anyone help? Any help will be appreciated.

That reason is that voodoo doesn't work with 2.2
For the sake of your wallet, I would read the threads more carefully before flashing new roms if I were you. I'm not trying to be a ****, but this issue was addressed many times in the cognition thread. I'm all for learning from others on this forum after they make the mistakes
Hi
My brother (a no-geek) has a captivate, and lives in a different city (I donot have physical access to the phone). He visited me few weeks ago and I installed CM-7 on his phone, i know my bad. Some of his videos were not working, so i asked him to update to the latest CM-7 build. He download the build, saved it on int sd_card and used ClockWork Recovery to install the selected ROM. Upon reboot it entered in never-ending splash screen. I found couple of odin ROMs, and posted him link, we tried to flash them, but no good.
Status --
The COM ports are detected, but the process at times halts at <SET PARTITION> at times at <SET UP>... at times all thread completed successful would show up as soon as hitting START.
I dont have a captivate, can someone please suggest a sure shot solution and post me a link for ODIN, with a root rom. I am using Team Whiskey on my Vibrant, and I prefer stable modified ROM because of its features and power.
I can explain him the process on skype using desktop sharing, but the ROM should be good. Thankyou very much in advance.
if he can access recovery, try wiping everything thru recovery then start again
Phone is in Soft Brick state.
Phone is in Soft Brick state. So i cannot boot into the phone and go to CW recovery.
What he needs is just a stable usb connection that's how he got to this point, bad communication between the phone and computer. On cm7 I beleive you need the nexus s drivers installed. Also make sure it's plugged into a usb port that's attached directly to the motherboard (back of pc, port 1 on laptop)
@studacris
I think the drivers are already installed good. The connection is also good, as i can the COM port detection in the ODIN, with one of the boxes changing its colour from NO-COLOUR to YELLOW-COLOUR.
I think the ROM builds are not good. They go action-less during flashing, actually nothing (progress bar) comes on phone, it keeps showing the Downloading screen, endlessly. Odin usually is stuck at at <SET PARTITION> at times at <SET UP>...
Can someone post a link for a test one click odin. Well i would prefer one click.
You did try DG's JF6 one click, thats the only one I use, how are you establishing dowload mode on the phone or are you even doing this.

if you could do all that, why would you need to send back for a new phone ? If you could do any of that, the OP wouldn't be in a non-functioning predicament

+1 If you read the OP the problem is he can't flash back to stock he is having problems flashing anything period, @ the OP correct me if I'm wrong but I have a strong hunch that you are leaving out some pretty crucial steps, I have a feeling that you are not putting the phone into download mode, I also believe that you are gonna need to make a jig and pay a visit to your brother to help him out especially if its bricked the same way mine just was flashing with cm7 roms. But if you are getting a com port to show without having to put in download mode then you are farther along in the boot process. If this is the case you may be able to adb into recovery do a full wipe excluding /boot and reflash. Will the PC recognize the phone with it in its current boot locked state? If so then recovering should be somewhat of a breeze.

- I am getting to downloading mode by
--- pressing the "vol +" and "vol -" buttons and then connecting the usb cable to the computer.
--- then removing the cable, after the phone enters the download mode. Then, start the odin and connect the phone through usb cable again. The odin detects the phone on one of the COM port.
- I havent tired wiping the phone through recovery. But i need to get to recovery first. I dont know in a soft brick state if i can get into recovery.
- regarding getting back to 2.1... i would like to flash to the latest version. Kies update is not an option for me, as i not in US.
This phone was purchased from craiglist, i used one click root method to root it and the same script an option to get the unlock codes. After that i experimented a lot on the phone with various scripts. Last i was using congnition on it. Then saw CM7, i liked it on my vibrant, so i flashed it on my captivate (which i got for my brother). Now i have to get back to some stable modified ROM... I am thinking about trying Srendipity or cog ROM... but before than i have to install a rooted stock ROM.
That is the story and issue... but thanks a lot for help. Any more suggestions.

Try putting the phone into download mode after you open Odin. Which version of Odin is this? Also, installing the nightly build of CM7 again often fixes the boot loop on the newer builds. I would try that if you can get to recovery.

I know this is a common one but no love with 3-button combo. I flashed to stock with odin and was trying to reflash to get Cog 5. Got a red fail in Odin and then got the PH-!-Comp error. I have been reading for a few hours and have tried most of the available button/battery pull combos and can't pop it into download mode. Will a jig help that? I can build one but it seems like I am not fully "Bricked" per say and I am hoping that I just missed something. The Captivate is about a year old and that is the info that I have. Any new suggestions?
Oh, I also tried the OneClickUnbrick and that didn't pick up the device...
I had the same issue while installing Andromeda3. Just install the ROM manager and use the 'Reboot into Recovery' option and then install CWM..

He is getting the phone ! com screen how will he install rom manager ?
OP- Just remove the battery, cable open Odin put in the cable and then the battery and see if Odin recognizes ur phone. Or try some other combo vol up and cable, Both vol and and cable.
If the button combo does not work a jig will work for sure just make it or buy one.
Built a jig and it worked. At least to get me into download mode. Now I need to build a cleaner version of it. I do love XDA! Thanks.
I just one clicked back to stock from the phone! Com screen. Odin recognized my phone at that screen and boom back in business.
Word of advice from soft bricking (phone!pc) many times... always have a jig handy!
Okay so I was flashing through ODIN, and I flashed through the PHONE section instead of PDA because for some reason I turn into Dolan Duck at 11 PM. Now ODIN won't get past "Setup connection..." and Heimdall gets an error when it attempts to "handshake with Loke". Switched to three different computers and it always acts the same, so I'm thinking I might have really jacked the ability to write directly onto the phone through the computer. Phone still powers on, but just boots to the AT&T world phone screen and stays there. No recovery mode so if I can have a way to fix this and get a kernel written onto my phone that'd be really great.

Hey hi,
1. By far the best way to go back to Stock ROM's :good:
2. I'm not sure if this is exactly the solution to your problem but hope it works.
- I've had problems with heimdall and odin, drivers not being compatible, the driver that is installed for heimdall doesn't seem to work with odin and if you try installing the driver to get the odin to work, heimdall stops working. So your best option would be to try this:
a. Go to the forum link above, download all the required files.
b. switch off your phone, wait for 3s, then hold the volume buttons "+" and "-" at the same time, you can just use your thumb, but those two buttons must be pressed at the same time, now hold it! Insert the usb connector from the laptop/pc to your phone via the micro usb slot. Wait for it.. and voila you are in download mode.
c. Now, if you are running Odin and if you HAVE the correct drivers, you will have the correct green/yellow indication when you use the software, which basically tells you that there is a "handshake" between the Odin and cappy.
d. Once this is done, you can follow the steps that you were planning to do, otherwise follow the steps from the thread posted above. one by one.
If you already have ROM's on the SD card, and you've already got CWM on the phone, you just need to go into recovery mode(hold the volume buttons and then hold onto the power button, it should work, otherwise give it another shot ), once in recovery you can install the new ROM using the normal method.
(a suggestion) Most people face problems coz the driver installed isn't the right one, so if you are using windows OS, and the drivers aren't detected, download the drivers again, go into device manager, completely uninstall the driver for samsung captivate, and install the one that is working.
Watch how it is done using one touch Odin3 --> here
If you are upgrading your ROM to ICS, after you flash the ROM, flash the Devil kernel for cappy, --> is a good one :good:
**Always remember to back up data**A clean install is always preferable**

Yeah the little box turns yellow in ODIN but it just hangs there at setup connection. I also, sadly, don't have recovery mode because my kernel flash is when it all went terribly wrong. I can connect to ODIN and Heimdall with no problem because I have the respective drivers, the problem just seems to lie in the fact that neither program can write to the device so it continually hangs.

quick question for clarification, the phone is in download mode and then u connect it to ODIN and when u hit start(to flash) nothing happens?
You could try this.
1. Install another version of Odin, or even the Odin one click with gb
2. Remove battery and cable connecting phone and PC.
3. connect USB to PC and then go into download mode and try flashing the new package.
Let me know if its still not working, i kinda had this problem, but i tried with different Odin packages, try to flash the one with the gb bootloader.
Yeah that's what happens. Its recognized and everything then just hangs at setup connection part really don't know what's up but it's kind of weird.
I really like have tried to change it like odin packages and everything but it just won't be read past set up connection. I just wonder if I messed up my partitions to the point of no return.

Hi, a friend of mine tried upgrading from Froyo to Gingerbread on his phone. I used ODIN for him in download mode and tried flashing 2.3.4 DXKPD firmware (Singapore). After flashing, his phone would not boot up. It shows a black screen (with some backlight), and nothing else. Then I tried to open download mode and reflash the thing again and it says PASS but it still doesn't boot up. After leaving the phone there for awhile, we realised that we could only occasionally go into download mode, and nothing shows up on the screen but ODIN detects it alright.
After that, I tried reflashing it again and now it's stuck at setup connection in ODIN. Somebody help? Is it a hard brick? What can I do?
PS: His warranty has already expired I think.
if you can go into download mode its not hard brick
try flashing other firmware like xxkpk or ddkq7

Okay... But now when I press the download mode key-combination (vol down+power+home), nothing shows up on the screen but occassionally the phone is detected in ODIN, but the flashing doesn't get past setup connection. So what could be the problem, and would flashing other firmware solve it?
Maybe try a different version of odin?

try removing and reinserting the battery before pressing the button combo. and the firmware package you used, is it one package or multiple files?
i think you will need multiple files ( boot, phone pda and csc ).

Yes you do. download the multi package (any region would do) and flash it. once the phone boots, flash it with the single package for your region so that the date and time are automatically updated via the SIM card. hope this helps you. One more thing, from windows task manger close KIES related processes if you see them.
regards.

Aight, thanks. I'll try again and post the results.
Alright, in my attempt to flash via ODIN again, I realised that the phone is not going into download mode anymore. When I plug it in to my USB, I can see that the backlight turns on but nothing shows on the screen. So I tried the following:
1. Taking out my battery, pressing the button combination for download mode, and putting the battery back in while holding the buttons
Result: nothing happened, the backlight wouldn't even turn on now.
2. Plugging out USB cable, pressing button combination and putting USB cable back in while holding the buttons
Result: nothing happened too, backlight also wouldn't even turn on.
Now I think it's bricked, and can somebody help me?
EDIT:
Or at least confirm that it's bricked with the symptoms.
