Question about switching from SD boot to root - Nook Color General

Hey everyone, first off, this forum rocks and has helped me by readin other posts quite a few times so thanks to all who contribute.
My question is this: I am currently running CM7 through verygreen's boot from SD thread and it has been working great (since I got my new Sandisk SD card). I am debating on if I want to go the other way and root the nook and use CM7 that way. Is there a way that I can do this without losing everything I have now? I would really hate to re-download all of my apps and everything so I was hoping that there was a way to go around this.
Does anyone have a way to do this? I am sorry if I missed the thread that explains this but I did try searching with no luck. Any help in the way of a suggestion or a link to a thread will be awesome. Thanks all, and again, you guys rock.

[Q] Booting to stock ROM on MicroSD card

I have CM7 running on my NC, but I find that I'd like to read the magazines that I subscribed to (dumbly, without noting that I'd be unable to read them after the transition). One possible solution would be to use an old MicroSD card as a boot point for the stock ROM. Is that possible? Can I put the stock software on an SD card in such a way that it will boot and save state when it's inserted, but will otherwise boot to CM7? I've looked for this... I've seen similar scenarios, but not quite this one. Many thanks in advance, whatever the answer ends up being.
Does the Nook App not work for your magazines?
No, sadly, it doesn't. From everything I can find, only the Nook Color can read them, not the other forms of software such as iOS, Android and PC.
Just do the dual boot option. I have cm7 on partition 1 and stock rooted on partition 2.
Hmmm.... good thought. One question, though... what method do you use to update the CM image? Thanks for the replies... I'm glad there are people that know all the options.

Questions about rooting

I have been lurking and reading for a couple of weeks now. I bought a used NC with 1.1 and used Autonooter to root it. Works great.
I bought a second NC which had the 1.2 s/w on it. I used the manualnooter process to root it. That works pretty well.
Now I'm thinking about getting into the nightly CM7 game. I'm wondering is there anything I need to watch out for with the 2 NC's I have if I do this. Do I have to take them back to stock? Can I just follow the CM7 instructions?
Any insight and guidance would be appreciated
50 views and no replies. If you read this and can help I would really appreciate some info. I'm reluctant to proceed until I hear from someone who has traveled the road before. Thanks
You can run CM7, stable or nightly, off of an SD card. You don't have to change anything on your Nooks to do this. In fact, they don't even need to be rooted. Running CM7 on the SD card will not change anything on the built-in memory of the Nook.
Look for the "size agnostic" thread, follow the directions, and you're good to go.
ps. I enjoy your music.
yeah, just follow the instructions on flashing cm7 for the first time. and make sure you understand the CWM instructions. you may want to try a stable rom for now. there are lots of battery and kernel issues right now with the nightly builds. but not to fear the devs are working hard to fix them. just stay with the stable's and your be fine. I hope this was helpful...

Well, I went ahead figuring "How hard could it be anyway?".
I did the nand backup with CWM 3.0.2.8
I then ran ROM manager V4.2.0.2 from internal memory.
I choose the option that allows me to download ROMS.
I chose CyanogenMod, and then chose 7.0.3.
I downloaded the ROM
I then chose Install ROM from SD card
It asked me about clearing caches, etc and I chose the default values already checked.
It installed without errors.
I rebooted and it got to the last part of the boot process where the word "color" is rapidly changing and stayed there indefinitely,
I rebooted with CWM on the SD card and tried to reinstall the Manualnooter I loaded on this NC a week ago.
Rebooted. Still hung up.
I copied my nand backup to the CWN SD card and chose restore.
It booted back to my manualnooter install successfully.
So I'm successfully back where I started.
Can someone help me understand what I did wrong on what I need to do to make it work? Thanks
Not sure what went wrong, but I would also suggest trying verygreen's size-agnostic approach. You keep your manual nooter and can run CM7 from an SD card to see if you want to go all the way and remove the stock BN software.

Or, if you want to go crazy, you could try racks' dual boot SD card image of Phiremod 6.2 (a variation of CM7) and Honeycomb. That's what I'm using and Phiremod works great (aside from battery life ) and honeycomb is just plain slick to use.

I loaded CM7 7.0.2 stable and was able to get it going. Thanks

[Q] Nooked. Some help flashing CWM though..

Hi there
I finally got ahold of a Nook Color. It came with stock 1.2
Now I need to flash CWM and then start venturing with ROMs. I am a little confused reading through all the threads, keep reading about emmc flashing, SD card flashing etc and it started to get overflowingly confusing.
So, a headstart would be super, thank you
PS. Already in love with this cute little devil.

Ok, so you want to try custom ROMs? Do you want to install it on the Nook or run the ROM on the SD first to try out?
Flashing to eMMC will erase your current ROM, say your 1.2 stock on the NC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227
Flashing to SD means you are not touching your NC's system and will boot via the SD card and run the ROM from there.

I would want to run ROMs from the internal memory.
Thank you Shutter

You're welcome (there's always a Thanks button ) .
That means you will be flashing to the eMMC. Make sure to check if your NC has the new partitioning. You'll have some extra steps to re-partition before flashing so you can make full use of the built in sd space for media.
Follow this thread word for word and you will be golden!

You really don't need to worry about the whole blue dot thing. If you repartition you will get more internal storage, but it is not necessary.

Question: Rooting and Cyanmod - 2.1

Hey guys! I was told to come here for help on rooting and modding my Samsung Captivate! I've been a long time member on overclock.net and I have heard nothing but good things from XDA so I thought I'd stop by for some quick questions.
What I am looking to do is mainly use the free tethering that cyanmod offers. I totally am not willing to pay ATT $30.00 a month for tethering.
I've been reading some post's on here and other places, but I would like to get your input on the best ways to do this without bricking or messing up my phone.
I apologize if there is already a sticky for this but I honestly didn't see anything I was 100% about.
I am currently running the 2.1 on my Captivate and the only thing I need to possibly back up is my contacts.
If anyone would be kind of enough to point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it!
Thank you,
Obzz/THEoBZ
If you are on 2.1 that is an easy place to start. If your not worried about backing up anything besides contacts, there's no real need to root before flashing cyanogenmod. If you do want to back things up such as your apps, wifi networks, etc etc I'd highly suggest rooting your device. Regardless, all you need to do is have a clockworkmod recovery zip on your SD card. Boot into recovery flash the custom recovery, then wipe data/factory reset, then flash you're desired ROM.

Oh ok! Is there anyway I can save them without a SD? Like to my computer or something?
You can use the internal SD and export it to it! then transfer to the computer. It is contacts>menu>IMport/Export>export to SD card
Or just sync your contacts through your google account that's the easiest way I find.

Alright, I went ahead and just saved them to my SIM. Question, for some reason when I try and use my internal SD it says none is available.. How do I fix this?
Also will I need a extra SD card to install cyanmod? The only instructions I can find is that way..
You won't need another SD card. The internal SD card can be used to store the cyanogenmod zip file. I'm not sure what you mean when you say the SD card cannot be found?

New Nook+ on the way. Looking for advice

Sup guys, i got a new hd+ on the way and of course i want to run android on it.
I use to be hard into the og evo scene so im familiar with root, roms and recoveries. Been away for a couple years though.
Whats the easiest most stable way to boot cyanogen 10.1?
Should i root first? Do i have to?
Which sd should i get?
Ive read sandisk class 4 is the best?
If i boot from sd is the card still useable for storage?
I didnt see a sticky on here, is there one?
With the update with google play store. Can i just use a launcher?? How is the experience?
Ive looked around and hybrid sd would seem to be the way to go. Just looking for some opinions and maybe a rundown of steps i need to do.
Thanx everbody
