So im on an i9000.
I was on Darkys Rom 9.5 for months. It was raining pretty hard here and my phone got wet for like maybe <5 seconds. The menu and back key began to stop working. I dried phone and thye began to work but then my phone wouldnt turn off it would flash on/off. After taking out battery and putting it back in that fixed itself, but then slowly the home button stopped working. I did a factory reset, still didnt work. But I then tried going to download and recovery using 3 button method...and I could. But I couldn not get response from home button while the phone was on in normal usage mode. I flashed Darkys 10.1 still same problem.
Darky rom your problem as always kill it flash stock rom with pit and repartition checked .

I think you flashed the false rom, i think you flashed the rom for the cappy or the vibrant
reflash the right one for your phone in Odin.

Before I begin I know I'll be slammed for loading an incompatible ROM for my phone, dumb on my part, especially without a clockwork backup.
I was running a leaked 2.2 rooted, which when loaded removed clockwork so i could no longer take backups. I then followed pathikshah.com/blog/install-android-2-3-3-gingerbread-on-samsung-galaxy-s/ which I know says don't use for captivate, but I didn't read that.
I am now running 2.3.3 but my back button is not operational, it flashes when pressed as normal but completes no action. My home button however acts as my back button. My menu and search buttons are normal.
I do not have the 3 button combo capability as i once had before, the screen just stays black and the buttons light up and it stays like that till i battery pull.
Other than that and some crazy screen distortion of colors when it boots it runs fine from what I can tell. But I'd like to at some point get back to a stable/compatible ROM.
Please let me know how I can somehow get to stock or a stable ROM. Thanks in advance.

You only option may be to buy or make a jig to force download mode then you can flash the stock ROM using Odin.
erm, im not 100 % sure because i havent tried this yet... but if i read it correctly, your rom is still (somewhat) operational. So try installing rom manager, flash cwm, then reboot into recovery.
From that, you can install the 3 button fix. Then i would suggest going into download mode, flash back to stock 2.2 using the odin back to stock. Then you can begin the process of installing 2.3.3
Also, the problem with yours is, you installed the i9000 version which for some reason has that button mapping problem. There are 2 versions of 2.3.3 on this forum (Cyanogen Mod 7 and MIUI). You can use either one of those, the buttons work perfectly and i dont see anything wrong with it.
Oh and, as the above person said, if my method doesnt work, you can either buy a jig, or build one yourself. There are threads in this forum about both . Also, please refrain from using I9000 stuff unless you fully know what it does. Im not much of a modder myself which is why i only download stuff from the captivate dev section.
Hope i helped
P.S... youd only be slammed if you didnt know what your problem was and blamed someone else for it. This forum is to help people
Try volume up and power, or volume down and power
Miui
This video helped me to go to downloading mode on my i9000 that had its 3 buttons bug:
youtube.com/watch?v=D0aoabVtPJ8&feature=feedlik
you need to buy a 301k or 300k resistor and it will work for 100%
adb reboot download!
also see if odin sees the phone when the screen is black, if you say buttons light up the phone is on, could be a problem with the image used in download mode. i once had this happen after a bad crash on the old manhatten project kernel. the splash screen images got corupted and it wouldn't boot passed a messed up lookin splash screen. thought i fried the video chip and went to flash back to stock. the screen stayed black with the 2 button + usb cable combo but odin showed the yellow box. so i started flashing and halfwat through the little guy with the shovel poped up. i was in download mode but my screen was black do to corrupted splash screens. phone took a flash and went back to normal.
success
Thank you all for your help. I ended up building a jig out of 3 100k and a 1k resistor and an igo adapter. Tore it apart and built like jig and like every end to a Macguyver episode the crazy contraption worked like a charm. Funny thing is I loaded stock 2.2 ROM, which in turn bricked the phone. I got the phone ! computer logo. So I used the jig again and got it flashed to stock and up from there to Cyanogenmod 2.3.3.
Thanks again everyone.
So this is my own fault, and to say it simply, my phone was in a pool (small one) of water. Every single thing works fine, EXCEPT for the home button. (the center button)
I just flashed Darky's ROM 9.5 on, and nothing changed.
Haven't tried wiping yet, but just don't want to do that yet..
Any suggestions? I wanna know if the button still works or not. If its a hardware (permanent) problem, or a software... since entering recovery still works...
Thanks guys
If you flashed a rom then guess would be hardware . You could try factory reset . Darky rom = no warranty .

I had serendipity(latest) on my captivate(SGH-i897). It was having issues and I couldn't do anything except boot into CWM. I had Continium 4.3.1 on my SD card so I decided to try and flash that. It appeared to be successful. I rebooted and now I get no display.
Have tried taking the battery out for several minutes. Have held the power button down while it was out.
I have tried plugging it up to my charger for several minutes. Have tried holding the power button for several minutes. Have tried holding the 3 button combo for several minutes with no luck.
Is my kernel/modem gone and I have a brick? I have a jig which i have had to use before and fixed it from DL mode but that isn't working either. No display.
have you ever flashed any of the gingerbread bootloaders?
if so you are screwed, continuum flashes one of 2 bootloaders.
if not..
try taking out battery count to 5 put back in
DONT TOUCH ANY BUTTON!
put in jig
or
take out battery
plug phone into pc
hold buttons
put battery in.
Yeah, i had CM7 on it a while back. Went back to stock then serendipity. I'm bricked then?
The PC won't even detect a device when I connect the phone. Is there anyway to push a new bootloader to the phone?
does CM7 use gingerbread Bootloaders?
i dont think so.. not a while back at least... umm.
you shouldnt be bricked... but if all else fails send it back and play dumb.
Continuum doesnt have a 4.3.1. It has 4, 5.x, but no 4.3.1. Are you sure you don't have Cognition?
I switched my phone on this morning and found it wouldn't boot beyond the S screen. I'm using a stock 2.2 rom downloaded via Kies some months back. It isn't rooted. The phone has been running perfectly until now. I tried 3 button recovery/download mode but these wont work. This is what happens:
1. Power on = the GT-I9000 screen
2. Animation and song
3. S logo screen - the S changes colour
4. One vibration signal
5. Three vibration signals
6. Black screen and occasional single vibration signal.
7. Both soft buttons remain lit.
Is there a way I can fix this to avoid having to send my phone away for two weeks?
Remove battery for an hour and try .
Download recovery jig from General pages .

Thanks - will try these
If you are able to get it to download mode, just get the stock firmware files fron samfirmware and flash it through odin....i went through the exact same issue a few days ago....dont worry..you should be fine

I've tried it but it still doesn't work.
I had the exact same issue on my phone when i got it originally and then updated to 2.2.1. Via Kies.
About once a week when i switched it off at night, come morning it wouldnt boot up, had to go into recovery mode and reset factory settings every time which was a real pain. Eventually read up on here enough times to figure out how to use Odin and flashed stock FW and never seen the issue since. You need the 3 button combo to work however to do this.
On GB now and all good.
Hi I flash the latest cm7.2 official Rom and everything was fine except for 1 thing the home button isn't working. Every time press the home button it only light up the soft keys but doesn't go to home screen. But when I flash SGSII after flashing cm7.2 my home button works fine any suggestions? Thanks in advance

That's a issue with the gapps of the rom.
Download the ROM Again. I had that problem too, just re-download and flash again.
Oh thanks so it's the gapps? Cos I did not flash gapp.zip be4 I used the rom

Also had this problem with CM7.2 on my Galaxy SII, not sure if the two problems are linked but they could be.
My lockscreen was disabled too, and I was getting no sound.
It's really easy to fix.
I reflashed the latest Google Apps (twice) then rebooted. The home button + lockscreen were still not working. I then shut off the phone, took out the battery, waited about a minute, put the battery back in, and switched back on again.
Everything was back to normal. Never got the problem again.
Try it and see if it fixes it.
