Costa Rica data issues? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am in Costa Rica for a week and am having in interesting problem with my phone. I purchased a local sim card and it works great, except the data seems to have odd issues. For instance, I can use Google maps just fine most anyplace I have a signal. But if I try to use the xda app, or the web browser, it doesn't work. I would think that data connections are all the same and it should work? I am using wifi at the moment and it works fine so I know it's not the programs. Any quick ideas? I am here for 4 more days.

My first guess would be to call the provider or ask a local user for the correct APN settings.

I looked up the APN settings online and they are correct. It just seems odd to me that data from Google maps would work just fine over the cell side but nothing else works. I would think it's all or nothing.
sent from XDA app using darky 9.5

Yeah. Usually if your APN is bad, all data is hosed. The provider may be selectively blocking traffic... Eg: if you're on a prepaid dumbphone+data plan, they may grant a narrow range of whitelisted urls or data providers. Not sure.

What data signal does the local service provider use? The captivate's modem can only pick up signals on the 850 and 1900 bandwidths. That's why, for example 3g won't work on a captivate with a tmobile sim card.

I have a widget that says I have an HSDPA connection at 7.2. I am leaning towards some kind of filter or white list on the cellular providers end. Its not to big of a problem since the place I am staying has wifi. But I would like to know the reason for sure in case I run into it again someplace. The other oddity is if I go into marketplace the items I have purchased don't show up in my apps selection. And in Google maps, I can see where I am, but the ability to share the location is greyed out unless I have wifi. Even though the satalitte image updates to wherever I might be. So the data going through is very selective.

I can also send texts to other local phones here but not mms pictures. Very unusual to be able to send/get some data but not all. I did read on another site that prepaid sim cards in Costa Ricardo don't have data but that wouldn't explain my ability to use Google maps to see where I am.

Do you have modem locked in to to one freq only?

I don't believe so. I don't think I flashed anything new since I flashed the darky rom a while ago. At home it switches from E to H which I believe is a different frequency? And I also at home have a dual sim setup swapping between att and tmo as needed. So I would think it's not locked on a frequency. I am flying home tomorrow, but I do appreciate the ideas. And maybe this thread will help someone else.

A search on Google on the subject of blocked IP addresses shows that Costa Rica ( particularly ICE ) has a known problem with being blocked by many providers. That may also be part of the problem.

Sun cellular gprs and mms settings for galaxy s?

Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Please help me get all the setting that I need to ensure that my Galaxy S can access GPRS/3G and MMS. Sun Shop and their hotline do not have any idea on how to set up this phone (so far):
Here are the things I need:
Name
APN
Proxy
Port
Username
Password
Server
MMSC
MMS Proxy
MCC
MNC
Authentication Type
APN Type
Hope someone is kind enough to provide me the info I need to make this work! Thanks!
Hi Kabayan.. I suppose you too are from Philippines..
Not everyone here in xda-devs knows mobile companies from our country namely Globe, Smart & Sun Cellular.
have you tried texting ACTIVATE to 2300 and SETTINGS to 2300?
or.. check this page: http://www.suncellular.com.ph/ecs_configure.php
Samsung Galaxy is not listed, just try to get the settings from other phones like Sony Ericsson P990i. The instructions are not the same, but you can use it as reference.
RE:
Hi Kababayan!
Unfortunately, I'm running out of options. I did all the settings I can find via the Sun website plus through the hotline to no avail.
Question: Is it possible that the GPRS is blocked to a certain carrier? I bought mine through Globe and just had it unlocked by myself via the app found in this site.
Is there anything I should place under "Server"? How about if I combine all the settings? APN Type can be placed as "Internet + MMS"...
hi.
i'm not in the Philippines anymore, but I've dealt with trying to get Sun to work on a non-Sun phone. I also have a Bell phone unlocked to a Rogers network here in Canada.
try these settings for Sun:
name: sun internet
apn: minternet
authentication type: none
apn type: internet
leave everything else blank/as is.
tell me if it works.
RE:
Thanks for all the suggestions! Unfortunately, it still is not giving me a 3G connection (and icon on top of the screen). I can make calls and send SMS without any issues.
I tried the Sun Internet APN set up above.
I also see this message "Mobile Network State Disconnected"
Weird is that when I place my Globe simcard, it detects the 3G immediately. Is there a way for Globe to lock the 3Gsignal of this phone even if I already unlocked it?? Strange indeed..
Added Details:
I have another setting that I tried to no avail. Maybe someone can send me a revised one since I might be keying things wrong:
Name: Sun WAP GPRS
APN: WAP
Proxy: 202.138.159.78
Port: 8080
Username: Not Set
Password: Not Set
Server: Not Set
MMSC: Not Set
MMS Proxy: Not Set
MMS Port: Not Set
MCC: 15
MNC: 05
Authentication Type: PAP
APN Type: Internet
I'm not sure about this but last time I checked, Sun Cellular Call & Text SIMs does not have 3G, only GPRS.. Their 3G is only for their Wireless Broadband..
Tried that with my Sony Ericssion Xperia X1 + Postpaid Sim, I don't get any 3G signals only GPRS. When I tried to manually set the 3G signal using the manual network selection, I receive a "Not Registered" message. this was just last March 2010
Some questions:
1) Are you using a Pre-Paid or Post Paid call&text sim?
2) In case Pre-paid, may load ka ba? hehe
3) Have you tried your Sun Sim with other 3G phones, and got a 3G signal and can browse the internet?
Try a Smart SIM, I'm sure they have 3G.
Another theory is, maybe Globe did some settings with your SGS so that it can only be used for their network, since SGS is sold exclusively by Globe. Just like iPhones, if you bring iPhones from other countries, you won't be able to Globe's 3G, you'll have to ask them to configure the phone for you..
Thanks again for the response!
1. I am using a postpaid line. I also own a N97 and when my Sun sim is there, it does give me the 3G logo on the upper part of the screen.
2. Hahaha.. this really made me laugh like a madman for a few secs
3. Yeah I think Globe made some restriction that even unlocking the phone for other networks will block 3G. But something is still lingering in my mind:
If they did do some block, why didn't they block it entirely I can still call and text as usual... Hmmmm...
I guess I'll go get a globe postpaid line for this na lang.
Last Question for you:
I tried the phone with a prepaid sim and also enrolled with Globe's 5 day unlimited mobile internet promo.
I can access the internet using 3G but I cannot seem to access GMAIL and Android Market using the widget and also by manually keying in the URL in the web browser. Is there a restriction with Globe? If yes, I might ask them to give me a plan that can access those. My concern is: I pay for Pxxx for unlimited mobile internet then I then find out that "unlimited mobile internet" has some minor annoying restrictions. I'll ask Globe about this but needed some advice so that I can come "prepared" when I grill down the sales rep.
Not all sales rep are technically sazzy and might just be saying "Yes Sir" to all my queries without really knowing anything.
from my own experience, best way to go about this would be to go to a globe centre and have them clarify everything there. phone reps will usually just give you the run around or hang up on you.
tip: don't mention you used it for sun. tell them that ur travelling to a diff country and ask if there will be any problem using the phone with that country's provider.
but to be honest, i dont think globe would lock down the phone to that extent. if they did, it might be firmware based customization. are you on the original firware or have you flashed to a diff one?

I just updated the firmware today. Updating it did take away all the apps I installed and my phone contacts.. I REALLY MUST REMEMBER to back up all data every now and then
I'll see if this new firmware works with SUN.... after I reinstall my apps and precious phone contacts.. i think I lost a few friends with the update
Note to self: start saving contacts to GMAIL for easy sync
Ayos! So it's a FW problem? Globe must have done something or the Open line thingy was incomplete!...
I really hate provider locks! It is better here in Singapore, there are no provider locks even on their exclusive phones like SGS!
ENJOY YOUR SGS!
nga pala, sikat din ba ang SGS sa Pinas? mahal kasi presyo ng Globe!
hope it's working fine for you bow with the new firmware.
lol at the backup... made that mistake too when i did my first flash. titanium works wonders for app backup.

Thanks to both of you for yourk suggestions.
Yes, sikat dito SGS to the tech savy of course.
I paid 33k for the unit. Is that fair or a bit steep?
Gusto ko nga ng titanium backup pero you need to root the phone pa right? Takot akong magroot e

Singtel sells the unit without a contract for S$900, Php29,700. But some shops sell it even lesser..

Any ideas when froyo would be available via kies?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
According to Samsung it'll be by the end of September. Just cross our fingers and hope for good news.
bell mobility sells it (16gig version) for $499 CAD, plus the 12% tax, w/c is around 24k. pretty good price considering we can unlock it ourselves.
yeah, looking forward to froyo for this month. lots of news circulating that it may be on the 23rd, but i'd rather keep an open mind.
I'm thinking of rooting my phone. Any advantages or disadvantages doing that?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
head over to the dev section to get more info.
basically, rooting will allow you to install apps that need more access to the system. usually for tweaks and such.
disadvantage? probably warranty, but there's also a thread to unroot the sgs if it comes to that.

Speedtest.net server locations changed

since the N1 launched I've been using it on Cincinnati Bell Wireless, a local carrier with the same 3G bands as t-mobile. I typically get around 2500kbps on 3G using the Speedtest.net app off the Cincinnati server.
I just signed to t-mobile (waiting for the myTouchHD) and using my N1 till then. Well I just used the Speedtest app and only getting around 700kbps now on 3G. I noticed the server said Washington DC, so I tried to change it and there's no more Cincinnati location, plus it says I'm only 20miles from DC, which is way off..Anyone know how to change this so I can actually get an accurate (or at least comparable reading) again? I'm assuming it has to do with the phones location or apn settings? I've restored my apn settings to default t-mobile already...no other settings have been touched besides switching the sim cards..
Thanks in advance for any help..

2G/Edge/GPRS data issue in many places especially while roaming

My Incredible S has problems accessing internet using 2G/Edge/GPRS data plan.
The connection is established and I get the 'E' sign for Edge connectivity, but internet doesn't work in all the applications (data is only sending, but not receiving, down arrow in E is not blinking)
This happens mainly when I am roaming. But I have another android phone, Samsung Galaxy Spica i5700, which works fine in all places even while roaming, with the same connection/sim.
I enabled all the Mobile Networks setting related to roaming and restarted the device, but it didn't help.
Also, I tried doing a factory reset of the handset, but it didn't help, the same problem of no internet still exists !!
I don't know if this is a defect in my mobile or a general hardware/software issue with this model. I have already raised a case with HTC and I am thinking of contacting the service center for a repair/replacement of the device.
Does anybody has similar connectivity issues with 2G ?
I'm having the same issue. My EDGE works fine in chandigarh,INdia, but when I go on Roaming to delhi, it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't . I even sent a mail to HTC regarding this issue. The reply I got stated that it might be issue with the carrier.
Yes, have same problem with gprs, very flaky

I find the phone takes ages finding signal in general when i go from somewhere I've had none at. I'm talking 5 minutes in places I had signal straight away on my hero. Same network

Same issue here and it is not about roaming. I'm on my "home" network - O2 in Prague, Czech Republic. When phone is in 3G/2G mode all is fine (it is using 3G conection). When I switch to 2G only I have this issue. Sometimes immediately, sometimes it works for usualy very short time so I'm able to synchronize e.g. weather and then it hangs. No data conection anymore and one arrow next to ''E" symbol is active for long time like if phone is trying to send data. For sure it is not about network because my older phone works fine.
I have same issue. Edge and gprs is not working.
Unfortunately in my neighborhood poor 3g coverage.
On older phone (HTC Tatoo) with same sim card edge works fine. HTC support advised me to change sim card, but it didn't help.
And also IS frequently reboots and can't boot up to the last with back cover on, but only start cyclical reboots.

Same fluctuations

Perhaps someone who knows how, could set up a thread with a poll, to see how many experience data problems on gprs verses those who have no problem with gprs data. If its a lot of people it will help with a case to HTC customer supports ?
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA Premium App
I have the same issue too. I,m on a very stable edge here in Trondheim, Norway, and sometimes it takes ages to connect to edge and sometimes not works at all, just saying "trying to connect" over and over in the settings-window.
To you with the reboot-issue when back-cover is off: This is due to the fact that the mobile-antenna for the device actually sits in the battery-cover on the backside. So when you take off the cover the Incredible S is without antenna
HTC Incredible S
I got my phone replaced through the service center and the problem is not there in the new phone ! It is working fine in all places and during roaming as well. So the problem I had was a device manufacturing issue. HTC Customer care was very prompt and I am glad the issue was resolved.
I asked HTC about this problem and they gave me a very convenient step by step method to set up APNs in my country and all that. I had very high hopes... but i still have that E with the blinking up-arrow and the not-blinking down-arrow.
No internet connection unless I use the Pass-through connection. A solution would be very much appreciated.
So should I take it that there are no solutions to this problem? Except for replacing the phone? That's rather sad...
This is probably unrelated but I had issues with my phone getting a solid 3g connection until I changed the settings to wcdma only instead of auto. Perhaps you can try setting it to gsm only?

Globe Access Point for Galaxy Note from Philippines

I'm from the philippines and i am using globe prepaid as my network. I asked from globe what is the configuration for 3g, the lady gave me a configuration sheet but when i entered as my access point, i cannot access the internet. I have a friend who uses xperia ray and he cannot connect as well. Any note user from the philippines kindly help or share your 3g settings. Thanks!

I've just had a quick Google and there are lots of suggestions out there. Here are some, hopefully one helps you:
First
Second
Third
Fourth
Fifth
APN
I tried all the configuration for the said links but unfortunately I still cannot make my 3g work. Although I found in one forum that when he changed his SIM card to a new one (probably a more recent one), he was able to make his 3g working. Can anyone confirm this? My sim card I think is about 4 to 5 years old but when in my Nokia N95 before, I was able to have 3g connection (it is the one instead of the antenna signal icon in turns into 3g icon).

lousy network

i used this device only for a few days in att and then moved to tmobile.
for those few att days and most time I've been to tmobile i get data fine.
but most of the time i really expect data, i see 3 or 4 bars and the 4g lte icon but i can't connect to anything. gmail emails never arrive. speed tests fail. etc.
at work this happen almost everyday. i can solve it by enabling airplane mode and then disabling it. i can see it connects to another tower.
but today it was weird. my wife note2 that should have crappy 4g on tmobile (it has att channels) was connecting fine. my motox had zero connection. but 3 bars.
i tried airplane mode trick. nothing. tried 2g nothing. tried 3g. data! i could see most sites on Firefox and run speed tests. but every google account sync failed (didn't test ssl sites, now that i think of it)... i think that i should blame on whatever tmo was using on the 3g tower for it's data connection... but anyway, why should the motox have worse 4g/data connectivity on tmo than a note2 made for att?
i do have xposed now (without touching any radio setting) but i saw this behavior days ago before i had it. Always writing it off as some bad tower location.
but now it's obvious the radio on this phone is bogus.
anyone have the same experience? anything i can do to improve/debug this?
Sent from my XT1053 using XDA Free mobile app
more investigation on this...
the network tower selection is still crappy. and i guess it's phone software fault... happens on other phones with Qualcomm chips on tmobile at same region.
but found more info on the gapps not syncing. i had disabled mobile network background sync for play store (i don't really need the playstore at all) and that also disabled background data for gmail.
note that the only thing i disabled was the play app. not a single other service or app. nothing else.
Sent from my XT1053 using XDA Free mobile app
Apparently I had to wipe my data partition after installing xposed and/or gravity box.
... My first account logged to Google services fine, but my second one never got background data correctly.
After I wiped my data partition all come back to normal. But that apparently also removes xposed.
Anyone using 2 Google accounts with that set up?
