As the title states, since I am on Tmobile, should I get the Streak 7 or the more expensive Galaxy Tab? The G Slate is out of the question due to the ridiculous price, and the only thing that is really preventing me from getting the Streak is the bad battery life. With that being said, the Galaxy Tab has a much better screen than the Streak 7, but does an overclock + custom rom help it match Tegra 2 speeds? I have a Vibrant but it can only overclock to 1.2 GHZ at max, so I can't account for the 1.4 ghz that most Tab appear can do. Can anyone who has had a Streak 7 explain some of their personal experiences?
The tegra 2 isn't actually much better than the humming bird (lower in gpu) but better in multitasking , the other thing about the streak 7 id the very low res (480*800)on a 7inch display eeally looks very bad very low dpi

I realized I forgot to mention the screen on the Streak as well, but yes, the same resolution on my HD7 stretched to 7 in would look terrible. And half the experience of a tablet is the screen itself. The Tab is looking great at the moment, but I just can't help but feel like it is a minor step up from a Vibrant (at least when flashed to make phone calls).
And, is the GPU on the Tab the same 200 mhz as on the Galaxy S series, or is it slightly overclocked? The Galaxy S could only decode 720p while the Tab can do 1080p, yet both use the same GPU. If I remember correctly, the Optimus 3d using the new OMAP4 with the Power SGX 540 was clocked at 300 mhz.

the thing that i know for sure is that there is extra 128 ram in the galaxy tab made for graphics processing that is why it performs better in graphics (for sure you know by now that the tab has 640 not 512 mb ram ) and a prove for what i say running neocore on both the tab and the galaxy s (galaxy s gives about 56 , galaxy tab gives 54 but on 1.5 times the resolution ) so i think beside the extra ram it must be clocked at higher speed than the normal galaxy s (i have tried the tab on my full hd 1080p samsung screen using HDMI cable and it outputs 1080p @30fps smoothly whics is impossible on the galaxy s even on its 480p screen )

Speaking from personal experience. I Suggest the Galaxy Tab.
As you already mentioned the battery life is abysmal on the Streak 7. I tried to play a 3 hour movie at 720p and it died 2.5 hours into it from a full charge.
My Tab lasts a full day of heavy use, sometimes 2 on lighter days and I don't use any battery savers or auto screen brightness. ( Using Gingerbread )
You have much better ROM options with the Tab also. CM7 and Overcome alone are worth their weight in gold not to mention Stock Gingerbread.
The screen on the Tab is much brighter and has a higher resolution. With the Streak 7 side by side with the tab try and play Asphalt 5. You will see a huge difference is the game. The Streak 7 version which is playing at 800x480 is grainy and just plain ugly compared to the Tab.
Even without Over-clocking and using a Stock Gingerbread the Tab is much smoother than a Stock Streak 7. Add an OC kernel and the Tab really flies.
Hope this helps, I had the luxury of no restocking fees to try out the Streak 7 but now TMO charges 75 bucks if you return one so save yourself a headache and go with the tab.
It also makes an excellent cell phone.
Thanks guys. I look forward to joining the Galaxy Tab community! By the way, is 1.4 ghz the highest the Tab can go? I know some Galaxy S units could do 1.5 ghz with no problem.

no it isn't the highest limit but i think the developers only sucedded to reach that till now , i have read some where that the hummingbird processor can be safe overclocked up to 1.6 without problems

Gurus,
I have a Streak 5 and am wondering if streak 7 is good with respect to resolution 480 x 800 like 5? I have seen a couple of reviews where screen size and low resolution of the streak 7 makes some pics and text look pixelized. So owners of streak please advice.. Would it help me if i changed the dpi to a lower number and get more screen landscape? or not..
Would resolution matter soo much if you chage the dpi? Please advice.. and help greatly appreciated..
If it is good.. i want to jump on it for the dual core and looks..
I think the screen is great given the price and feature set... the Streak 7 is a real diamond in the rough...
I really like the streak 7. It's my first tablet and I have read a lot of people complain about the resolution. For me, for that size screen it's fine. I dont see it pixelate or anything like that. I also play Dungeon Defenders but its one made for the tegra 2. I also have it on my mytouch 4g and the difference is crazy! on the streak 7 it's console quality! The only complaint I really have with it is the battery life. people complain about the res but come on it's a 7 inch screen. I think on a 10 inch screen or bigger the resolution would be more noticeable but on a 7 inch screen it's just fine.. people just like bashing it.. because well.. it's dell.. lol

+1 I dont think it gets the credit it deserves because of the dell bias.. I think if some other company released the same thing it wouldnt have gotten such horrible reviews.. I read engadgets review but then I started reading other engadget dell reviews... they always have something bad to say about whatever they are reviewing..
plus once this baby gets honeycomhb then we will see the real power of the streak
Turning a sidekick line into a ds7. Was worried about screen resolution, but everyone here isn't worried so I'm gonna take the plunge. Best tablet for the price considering the tegra 2 processor

After you flash the new upgrade with the tweaks included, you are HIGHER then any other device on the quadrant scores. I reached 2200 last night. Which OEM defaults only gave about 1500. So yes, Monster madness, Crazy Snowboard, Dungeon Defenders, all play like a PC quality game. Its very nice.

I make and receive phone calls just fine using Google voice and sipdroid. It works with the speaker/Mic or ear phones/mic
well actually i wanna use it in India where 3G is still initial stages and price sucks.. moreover google phone and sipdroid wouldnt work here..
I would have said get the Galaxy Tab as it has a better screen and a longer battery life. Also more support here and also can be made to make phone calls. While the streak 7 has very good specs its screen resolution hurts it and makes it look dull next to the Galaxy Tab.
I think your experience will depend on what you are looking for. I don't really notice a difference in graphics, as I am not trying to watch HD movies (lower res movies are ok on a 7" scree) or edit photos. I am happy with the streaming content I have seen so far, global-tv in canada and youtube.
The only drawback I see on this device is the battery life, which has been much improved since the update and that you can't charge it via your PC. Otherwise this has been exactly what I was looking for. On a bang for you buck, this seems to be the best on the market for its price, given the 4G, SD card, "future" upgrade to 3.0 and overall quality.
A very happy streak user.

tab doesn't have the tegra2, means less games, no netflix going forward....
Why would I buy a tab for 200 when I can get the ds7 for the same price?
I am looking at picking up an android tablet. I want one that is 7 inch or less screen. I have looked at the streak 5 inch, streak 7 inch, and the galaxy tab. I wanted to hear from streak users before purchasing. How do movies look on the streak? How are games. I know that it has a smaller resolution than the galaxy tab but does that mean games designed for the larger smartphones like the Evo will play fine on the streak? Most of the reviews tell you more of what it isn't rather than expounding on what it is. How good is the battery life in general? I only need a wifi version but I saw that the roms are for the ones with gsm.
Ive been having a great time with my dell streak 7 so far, screen isnt bad for watching movies or games at all, not the best screen but more than goid enough... Also uf you are looking to pick one of these bad boys up I can sell you one for a more than reasonable price email me if youre interested [email protected]
Btw it would be the dell streak 7 with tmobile 4g in new condition with all thw accessories
I was thinking about getting a wifi only version but I didn't know if that version has been rooted yet. I got a dell gift card for my birthday so it would only cost me $49 to get the wifi version but I want to at least be able to root it.

Ummm...colors on the screen are good, but you should watch movies head-on. The viewing angle isn't great. Games play well in general, and run smootly for the ones that run, but some games have issues (I think it's something to do with the graphics drivers or the Tegra 2 or something) causing games like The Sims and Need for Speed to show white textures. The battery life only gave me 3-4 hours when I got it, but since you have a Wi-Fi model, you can root it and disable cell standby, buying yourself a couple extra hours. I recommend flashing over it with Honeycomb. The "ROMs for GSM" thing is not a problem because you can remove anything you don't need (the T-mobile ROM, for example, is the regular Wi-Fi ROM with a different boot animation and some added t-mobile bloatware.)
If you are ok with hacking it, which can remove cell standby for battery life, give you Honeycomb, or any number of improvements, it's definately worth it. Even if you are going to leave it stock, it is better than most tablets in the price range, if you can get by the battery life and viewing angle. But, I recommend putting Honeycomb on it and removing cell standby. For $300, you can have a Honeycomb tablet running on a Tegra 2, as opposed to spending $800 for the Xoom, plus contract, for the same OS and processor.
I am in India and we don't have contracts here, only unlocked phones. I've been looking out for an upgrade and Galaxy Nexus really intrigued me, I've never owned an actual Google dev phone before but would love to have one. Apart from this Galaxy Note also caught my eye but it being a GB phone really sets me off, that and the fact that it's power my Samsung's TW. My only concern is that SGX540 might be a tad weak for a decent amount of gaming, mostly Asphalt 6, RS11 and a few other little tidbits of games that are out there. What do you guys think?
SGX540 seems to be a waste of money on a modern phone (we're talking >600$ :s ). It seems like they want to offer the minimum specs for the maximum price...
I'd like to have untouched android directly on my phone but how much do I have to pay for it and do I have to lose features like ext-SD or a modern GPU?
Galaxy Nexus is a trendy phone which looks great but that's short.
I am from india and have very good knowledge about mobile and tablet devices and afaik the galaxy nexus has a very powerful gpu. way better than gs 2. Although the snapper is 5 mp believe me the snaps look absoultely amazing from this phone . Way better than gs 2. The processor is very good. Although we all wanted a samsung made one.

SGSII's GPU is supposedly more powerful than the one in SGN, which is the one found in our own SGS only clocked much higher(200 vs 384), although I couldn't find a benchmark comparing OMAP 4460 with Exynos.

Plus, it is not confirmed whether GPU is also underclocked like the CPU [stock OMAP 4460 supports 1.5 Ghz] .
In effect, even if it supported 384 Mhz and there was some driver update which purportedly increases performance by say 10% and on the same resolution, it would still be slower than SGS II"s GPU [and significantly slower than A5].
The 720p screen ensures, that the GPU would perform quite poorly on the native resolution . Such a shame

I chose the Note because it has better hardware than than the Nexus. Just look at the CPU, GPU, and screen. For me the Note is a perfect phone because I use it mainly for web browsing, gaming, and watching live video. The advantage the Nexus has is ICS, which we will eventually get.

note has a notable edge on screen res. on top of having extra 80 lines (1280x800 vs 1280x720), the nexus also loses lines of resolution due to its on screen buttons, which reduces the resolution of the nexus to something like 1196x720.
note also has more processing power. i had a motorola atrix and upgraded to a galaxy note. despite the note having to run at a much higher resolution, it was still producing a much higher framerate compared to the atrix. the omap isnt that quick compared to the exynos chipset.
but im just going on technicalities here. i havent tried the nexus yet, but if the nexus was available 2 weeks earlier, i probably would have a nexus instead of a note. in the end, both are awesome phones, and both will get ICS (although the note might not see it till january). its just a matter of whether or not you can wait.
I think Note is the best one ,
Best resolution
Best Screen Size (not comfortable for all)
Best CPU
Best GPU
My choice is the Note, as mentioned above the PowerVR graphics in the Galaxy Nexus is quite a bit slower than the Mali-400 in the Note/S2 despite the higher resolution. Also the Note gets a bigger battery while the Galaxy Nexus is much the same as the S2.
A big deal breaker on the Galaxy Nexus for me is the lack of micro SD expansion, with such a fantastic screen for video and prices relatively low for 32GB cards the microSD slot is pretty handy.
John

The lack of sd card in the Nexus and weaker hardware meant I went for the Note and I don't regret it. ICS on the Note should be awesome because there is definitely room for improvement in the software department for the Note, it isn't as smooth as my S2 was when scrolling though menus.
imho: Nexus = Absolutely NOGO !

In my case, I use a huge amount( up to 30 GB and more )of offline RasterMaps for Navigation in regions not covered by Navtech/Teleatlas Vmaps , for this reason expandable storage is essential .
Ostentible SGN supports 64GB SDHC ...
If the Nexus would have a SDSlot , I would have spoilt for choice
When updated to ISC the SGN will have only advantages !
I thought I had misread it when I saw the Galaxy Nexus was lacking a micro SD slot but unfortunately it's true.
How do the cameras compare? I know the Galaxy Nexus is 3MP down but that on its own doesn't mean anything.

Dont go into Note section to ask for question like this, because most of the answers will be pretty obvious. And you dont mind if I add 1 more. Note has the best specs, but if you cant wait for ICS, go for Nexus, it's the only thing that brings the Note down.
Note without a doubt. I was interested in the Nexus back when I had an SGS2 but as soon as I learned of the Note (bigger screen, same GPU as SGS2, faster CPU and expandable microSD) I knew it was the one for me and not Nexus. Nexus has too many compromises to be worth it for anyone but a developer.
Of course note.
The note has everything the nexus has and a larger screen in addition.
16gb just doesn't cut it. And now I am used to the size of the note I'm not sure I could ever go back. Its pushing my ipad aside too.

I like the larger screen for emailing and surfing.
I dislike those soft buttons on the Nexus, they don't look appealing to me and I like having hard buttons.
So it was a no-brainer.
I ask this because I need a tablet for my 1 month summer vacation soon, and I'm not sure if I can buy a Nexus 7 at that point yet.
Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 actually costs the same, or even cheaper than Nexus 7 right now. Tab 7.7 will also be only slightly more expensive, because the Nexus 7 will be sold at a higher price in my country after tax and so on.
So, disregarding the price, would 7.0 or 7.7 be a good choice too?
7.0 is very affordable, but i think the resolution isn't as good as the Nexus or 7.7?
7.7- I love the hardware, it's slim, AMOLED screen, and the battery life is great. I've heard about lagging though. However, I will probably root and use a stock android rom.. or use a launcher that replaces samsung's crap.
Both the samsung tablets also have sd card support. They do lack the development scene of the Nexus though.. but I am not someone who messes around with the custom rom a lot. I just need one simple clean one, then I'm good.
Would you choose the samsung tabs if they all cost the same price? why or why not?
Bought this tablet and gave my GTab 2 7" to my girlfriend and couldn't be happier. This thing is miles ahead of it.
This is the best 7in. Out there period. In terms of power and quality. Nothing even remotely comes close to touching the power this device has. Or at least below the 10 in. Range. Get one asap! Lol. So happy to have one.
Samsung tab in 7in. Range sucks, spec wise. Not worth the extra cost to pay for a lower spec device. Samsung smiled screen good but nexus 7 has an excellent display also. Actually aside from infinity pad, nexus 7 has the highest dpi of any android tablet out. So the resolution looks even better and sharper. If we go by the way apple rates their screens, nexus 7 has a retina display. Nexus 7 has like 216 dpi. New ipad3 has 250 or something close to that. So the screen quality on nexus 7 is top notch for a tablet, especially an android one.
Isn't this the only 7 inch running quad core at the moment?
I had the GTab 7.7, it was the best sub-10" tablet, before the Nexus 7 came out (or if you must have 3G).
However, JB on it sucked due to wifi problem. Samsung is not exactly know if fast when it comes to OS updates.
Don't even have mine yet but I've been shafted by enough devices that I don't think I'll ever buy anything except official Nexus devices from here on out.
It's so smooth and fast' nothing lags' even web browsing is a great experience. My wife is extremely jealous...

Yes, its the only quad core (really 5) tegra3 7in. Tablet out now. Plus its the only one that can play all tegra3 optimized apps n games. Plus its the only 7in. To have really fast ddr3 ram. Then aside from infinity pad, it has the highest dpi of any android tablet. Really making it have the best display for this size factor. Then its the only android tablet period running official jellybean firmware.
BUTTERY SMOOTH...very fast! Plain n simple it works great. I will likely buy my woman one also.
Nexus 7 hands down.
I actually looked at the Galaxy 2 7" last night to see how it compares. The hardware across the board is grossly inferior. From the CPU, to the GPU to the resolution, to the DPI, etc.
The Samsung does have some added features (ie: gorilla glass, sd card, etc.), but it hurts where it counts.
If you disregard the price the new Toshiba 7.7 (AMOLED screen) is better as general hardware and construction, no question here.I think right now is th best 7" tablet you can buy. But it cost more than double which I can not justify (it is better but it's not "twice" as good).
My relative have one of these and, having set it up for her, it feels very nice in the hand and the few apps I loaded seemed really quick. Reviewers tend to be in agreement that this is, not just the best budget tablet, but the best Android tablet - period.
there is ZERO reason to buy any other ~7" android tablet, whether taking into account pricing or not.
I sold my Galaxy Tab 10.1 to buy the Nexus 7 and I absolutely do NOT regret doing it. I love it. Best selling decision I ever made.
And the original Tab line is BETTER than the Tab 2 line (look it up, they cut a lot of stuff to make it cheaper and the performance of the Tab 10.1 actually BESTED the Tab 2 line)
So bottom line, I can't see why anyone who choose the Tab 2 7 or 7.7 over the Nexus.
I have the nex7 and the gtab 7.7, disregarding price the gtab is better.

Well he doesn't really have to. The 7.7 is a beast. Don't even think about how other Gakaxy Tabs stack up with the Nexus 7. That is like comparing the Galaxy Ace to the Galaxy Nexus, of course the Nexus wins that. The tab 7.7 however, is a different story. It is pretty much the Galaxy S3 of tablets.
The thing maybe a year old but it is still a beast.
-Super Amoled plus display at 197 ppi, not that much lower than the 215 ppi of the Nexus 7. Exact same resolution actually but a bigger screen on the 7.7
- lightest tablet ever
- one of the thinnest tablets ever, a lot thiner than the Nexus 7
- perfect size and form factor. Aluminum build but still feather light
- Best battery life out of any tablet including the iPad 2
- Exynos processor (dated now but insane a year ago)
Pretty much can go down the list. It is a premium device.
Now the Nexus 7 has some pretty big advantages, especially price, CPU, GPU, and Jelly Bean, it is still hard to decide somewhat.
You are comparing an older high end car to a newer consumer car. Not as clear cut as some people make it out to be. If I were to ballpark it, the tab 7.7 would be a 2010 Acura TSX and the Nexus 7 would be a 2012 Civic SI. I would probably go with the Civic myself but some might go for the TSX.
My first experience with a 7-inch tablet was an Acer A-100. I was never really satisfied with it and ended up selling it. I don't know what made me decide to pick up the N7, but I'm very happy with it. For $250, the building quality it outstanding and it's very fast.

I actually have both, and though I love the Nexus, the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 has a special place - I love it. It proved to me that specs didn't matter that much when it comes to every day use (had many tablets, including the biggest disappointment of all time - the Transformer Prime).
It was embarrassing that my Tab 2 was more enjoyable to use than the Prime, but it was, that is simply a fact. Browsing is what I do most on a tablet, and the Prime was laggy as hell. Though I love Chrome as a browser (the only one I use on PC), Chrome on the Nexus is simply not good. Still behind the stock browser (IMHO), so overall, I find browsing more enjoyable on my Tab 2 7.0.
I can't wait for the Tab 2 to get JB (if it does).
If you had to pick one though,go with the Nexus 7. For the Price, unbeatable.
