Found a Galaxy S on Ebay and man says the phone has a problem. Says 'Data network not available' Cant make or receive calls or texts.
Phone Fault or his Sim??
If you know how to fix this please help
Do you have the phone in hand? Do you know the history of the phone (water, drop, lightning, etc)? There are really many possibilities, maybe he just put the wrong sim card in...

Its on ebay so the seller has it. 99.1 feedback rating.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Samsung-Galax..._Phones_ET&hash=item25646ab78b#ht_9620wt_1139
Thats the ebay link
Or corrupt imei or blocked imei
You still can't know if it is fixable unless you buy it and try and fix it, even if the seller has a good feedback rating, it isn't going to be depict whether you can fix it or not. So really it's up to you, it could be as simple as a new sim card, flashing a new modem or rom etc, or it may be unfixable and left with a Galaxy S portable music player. I would have a good search around for others who have had this issue and see what fixed it.
No gaurantees obviously (as previously stated, impossible to know what's wrong if you don't actually have the phone), but check this out: http://www.fixandsave.co.uk/index.p...00-no-signal-fix&catid=173:samsung&Itemid=254

It depends on your problem. If you show them the phone won't lock and GPS doesn't work, then they have too.
If your GPS is not as accurate, they may not. I am not sure what the tolerance is for that.
I spent two hours proving that same case to them and I can speak in very technical terms with them. They just kept saying I need to use ATT navigator or my gps won't work. I told them they were a bunch of useless jack asses if they think anyone will buy that garbage. Long story short, they refused, I now run Axura where the gps works wonderfully and I could not be happier. Once my contract is up I am switching carriers.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
It doesnt even lock on. I might have to go try that. And yeah i've thought about switching carriers bit being in the military only ATT works everywhere in the world.

Tell them that the gps doesnt work, it wont lock and also that your phone shuts down randomly and that it is a known issue to samsung and att. also tell them your battery sucks ass. The more things u tell them that they cant prove it in the store they will replace it on the spot. I told the att dude about 10 things about the phone the dude didnt even say anything went in the back and brought me a brand new looking cappy.
Very well thank you all for the info.

x2. I walked into the repair center today and as soon as I said "I've got three things wrong with my phone" the guy was already working on the paperwork for my replacement. I was in and out in 10 minutes. The tech didn't even check anything to see if I was telling the truth, but then again I have a feeling I'm not the only person who has been to that store with a malfunctioning Cappy.
If anyone care: my first phone had the crazy self-pressing home button for a while (I learned to live with it as it wasn't so bad with certain roms) but then I started getting random shutdowns earlier this month and this weekend the GPS was just plain fubar (kept reporting me as being in Orlando instead of San Diego). Here's hoping #2 works out and I don't end up going through multiple warranty replacements just to find one that works reliably.
Also if u get a replacement check with shippmemt it is. If i rmr correctly the newer ones are 1008 that work better, you can check this under the battery. This was mentioned in one of the rom threads in the op but i cant rmr with one if i find it ill post it here

This was mentioned, but just as many people say their phone works great and it is different build. I think it is a red herring.

I am looking for input from people who have used the apps out there. I have read a lot and see the articles, etc but I am looking for some real world experience.
I want an app that cannot be disabled, wiped, or the removal of the sim would impact. Anyone know what is best?
There's a Themes and Apps subforum for this.

No matter what if you take the sim out it wont work because there would be no way of relaying the location of the phone without the service the sim card provides.
Sent from my CM7 powered captivate
Seems to me that if the phone can still access the network without a SIM card to make a 911 call, it should be able to allow an app access to report itself stolen or be located.
Seems another reason not to use a phone crippled and limited by a sim card.

False. Some of the stolen phone apps will actually work just because of that fact. The phone detects the SIM was changed, so it sends out its location. However, I'm not sure how it'd work if they just took the SIM out for good. But that's just not really probable. Most people steal phones to either use them themselves or to sell them to people who end up using them.
Try Theft Aware, very good app, can't be detected, nor disabled, and reports location even after sim removal.
Overall, the best protection is insurance. Cover your assets. If it's lost/stolen suspend the service, file a claim, get another. Just had to do so myself, mine was took out of my pocket while I was in a fight at the club.

since we sell it I really recommend taking a look at theft aware. It's definitely the only product in the market that survives a factory reset (if installed with root privileges), works with other simcards (many competitors do that too)
and - theft aware will soon offer a web remote interface where it also works without simcard (if a wireless lan is available)
here are two coupon codes offering a 40% discount on theft aware. be quick. each one only works once.

yea might have to look into getting an app like droid seek or theft aware.
after a gruely 5-6 days ive got my phone perfectly the way i like it and everyone knows thats when something happens to it.
if its already gone try plan b from the market and install it. It will gps it to a very good location and send google maps to show you where it is to your gmail acct
With hard reset and flashing to. stock with oneclick won't this app be useless?

Hi Guys, I've got a problem with my xperia x8. Sometimes during calls, the person I am talking to stops hearing me. Everything sounds good at my end. This is starting to get more and more annoying. Issue repeats itself from time to time, and it's actually quite random. I already returned the phone back to the retailer, but he only wiped the data and installed stock software again. He couldn't repeat the issue. I haven't changed the software, and I am not convinced that it is a software issue. Could you Guys please help me? Any advice would prove to be helpful, because at the moment phone is becoming unusable. Many thanks in advance!
It is possible, but I think the replacement costs might actually rise to about the half of the money phone's worth. I just thought that maybe someone here had the doubtful pleasure of witnessing this issue on their phone and would pass some suggestions, directions on how to resolve it.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
You mean he can't reproduce the issue, right? Could it be the carrier/network's side? Do you experience this regardless of who you're calling and which network they are on?
Sent from my rooted tomato using xda app
That's true. I think it is not network or carrier related. I've tried changing the sim card and of each sim card used the issue repeated. I honestly have no clue what the root cause might be. I will try to get a pricing on the mic replacement service. However any suggestions are very much appreciated

I think it shouldnt be like that. One friend has desire x, it was loud enough, but had to give to warranty due to lcd fault. When she got it back desire x was updated also, but since then it is as quiet as mine. I do not listen to music much, i dont care it is quiet on music playback, but i hate when it is quiet when someone calls me. In settings everything is set to max and quiet on pickup is unchecked.

Looks like a hardware issue.
I think its software fault, but dont know how to fix it. and else what makes me think it is software problem- it has only 3 system languages. i have never seen only 3 languages in any of android phone. and sometimes when i turn it off and then on back it cannot detect network, it detects it in very very long time or when restarting.

Network is a different issue. It might be a faulty radio or something. I am facing a similar problem. It says NO SERVICE frequently, whereas the same sim card in other phones shows full bars. I'd recommend you take your phone to the service center if under warranty, else why don't you try flashing and experimenting.

Greetings good people of the xda-developers forum!
After a little reading around I figure this is the most apropriate forum to post this thread in, correct me if I'm wrong.
Earlier this year I lost my phone in a cab after a night out, the driver decided to keep my phone instead of turning it in (usually if you leave something in a taxi in this region, you'll have it back with a little humiliation from the taxi-central the day after, not this time though).
A couple months after loosing it, I got a "emergency message" from my lost phone, and it went on and off for a little while untill yesterday when it apparently was taken into use! I have an "invisible" tracking app installed that will survive factory resets and gives me the opportunity to take pictures, record sound and some more.
Anyway, the phone has moved a couple countries away since it was initially lost, so I've lost hope of reclaiming it. My plan now is to give an honest shot at making my phone the most annoying device the new owner has ever had!
I come to this forum now, looking for inspiration/ideas and warning where warnings are due!
Is there anything I really shouldn't do, that could come back and bite me?
What would you do if you were in my situation?
Any good ideas of how to bother this guy?
So far I've only really come up with the idea of wiping his data from time to time..
I appreciate any ideas or warnings!
Thanks!

it will not back bite you if have retail invoice of that phone do whatever you want
Isn't it possible, even with sim card phones, to call your carrier, report it stolen, and have it basically bricked so Noone can use it again. I know they can with like sprint and Verizon phones that don't take sim cards. But I've heard of it happening with sim devices too. I would just try calling your carrier.
If that don't work. I'd leave it alone. The person who has your phone now probably isn't the person who took it. Which is why it was sold out of the country. And that person most likely doesn't deserve all that crap

That's the nasty part of stealing a phone. The Carrier will lock the "ESN" (Electronic Serial Number) so all they need to do is flash it over to another carrier... I.E. if you have a GSN type phone from say AT&T you can flash the software over to T-Mobile who doesn't give a flying flip about a stolen ESN (As a example) I personally have T-Mobile... They did try to make a law making req the manufacture to add a "Kill Switch" allowing the consumer to render the phone useless how ever that did not pass... SO Basically some one steals your phone that's it nothing you can do but buy another phone or hack into it like the OP..
TO OP: I'd go Impractical Jokers Style. Ease drop on him and play really dirty sounds (Porn sounds... moans/grunts etc) then Fry the phone... **** that guy he had to know it was stolen and if he didn't he's a fool... Check your ESN's People!

It is indeed possible, but not flawless. There is supposed to be some automation to it in the country the phone was initially lost, but either this automation failed or it's sucess is the reason it left that country. Problem is though, the idea is that they block the IMEI from the networks, but some countries are not part of this agreement/system.
I think the guy who is currently in posession of the phone knows perfectly well how it was acquired. Judging from pictures taken through the phone, the taxi-driver and the current holder of the phone may very well be related. Also, the phone had it's language changed to Arabic by the taxi-driver, this has not been changed by the new user (not that it prooves anything). There is also the fact that the SIM inserted in the phone in the country I lost it in, followed the phone over to the current country, where it was replaced by what appears to be a prepaid SIM. I don't think this phone was up for sale anywhere, I think the taxidriver sold or gave it away to some family member coming to visit.
As mentioned, I have no hope of having it returned. I'm not gonna push this too far, but I do feel like putting a dent in his joy over his shadily acquired device.

As far as I've understood, in the European countries that are part of this agreement any locked IMEI number will be locked out of all mobile networks, this can only be worked around by changing the IMEI number or shipping the phone off to some country that is not part of this agreement. In the country my phone was lost the police send a notification to the networks when they recieve a lost/stolen report. Not sure if it went through in my case.
My list of options are limited to what my tracking software allows me to do, sadly (or happily, depending how you look at it) my programming skills are not by far sufficient for me to go beyond what the software offers, allthough I reckon someone with the right knowledge could use the tracking software as a backdoor into the device?
Wow. I'll be honest, I never thought them tracking apps would ever give you anything useful, but if your able to basically see every picture they take, take pictures yourself...I think that's crazy... wipe the phone....
What exactly can you do with yours? Read texts sent and received on the phone? Does it gps track its location on demand? Even if the gps is disabled in the device itself?
You said the one you have stays on the device even after restores and factory resets? What's the name of the app?
As for the locked esns.... If an American cell company like tmo locks one up, is that gonna stick over any of the carriers in the US? Basically, all 4 of them?
Cuz I know before, as long as you had a sim card, it didn't matter, you just swapped it for a new one.
