I've never installed a custom ROM before, and want to make sure I got this right before I do.
As far as I can tell, I root the Streak 7 using Gingerbreak, install CWM, then use "install zip from SD card" to install the custom ROM.
If not, can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? I plan on installing Streakdroid7. Also, will this erase my data?
EDIT: I am using the Wi-Fi only version. Will the ROM run on the Wi-Fi version properly, or is it intended for the T-Mobile version?
EDIT: Nevermind, I got it.

Hello,
I have a Nexus One with Froyo FRG33 installed. Previously, I had installed cyanogen 6.0 with clockworks recovery.
The mobile keeps prompting me to install the latest update. When I click yes, it reboots into clockwork recovery, where I can't work out what to do next.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Many thanks.
If you want to install the OTA update, you need the stock recovery (must be somewhere in the forums), if you have Cyanogen i dont recommend doing this... there was a way to stop the messages but don't remember how
WRONG PLACE TO PU A QUESTION btw
And be warned, you lose root with this patch.

Hello,
Thanks for the response. I already had installed stock fr91 which was upgraded to frg33. That did not get rid of clockwork recovery.
I don't care about root so not really concerned about that. Tux.
So...I downgraded to a hackable 2.2 build from the latest OTA, then I rooted and used ROM Manager to install CW. CW wouldn't flash the ROM so I'm in the process of installing OpenRecovery.
Can I flash a 2.1 custom ROM without bricking the device?
From what I understand, rom manager doesn't work with milestones. Best bet would be to flash a custom rom via openrecovery; I recommend GOT

well to avoid brick i recommend this:
-the new open recovery is one of the best tools for flashing phones
-smart chefs know their files are too big to avoid having a fail on a download and add a MD5 check sum with is a number that tells you the files downloaded properly, so choosing roms that gives you a sum is a win.
-always use full battery when installing a new rom
-factory reset before and after any new rom to avoid problems (i had an issue related with both, weird i know)
-use stock rom, some roms may need stuff other rom changed.
-ensure your sd card is not fake or full (I've heard sad stories about fake SD cards)
I'm currently running with a rooted version of the latest stock firmware on my N1, and I love the stability and all, except Google's apps2sd implementation is really dumb.
With only a dozen or so apps I am already getting low storage errors.
I've tried flashing in DT's apps2sd but unfortunately it didn't seem to work at all. Are there any other options for me to get apps2ext support without switching to a custom rom?
Try Link2sd in the Market.
It may be better, it may not, but it's worth a try...
Hey SmallWalrus,
I am running stock 2.3.4 unrooted Nexus one. (yes, that is GRJ22)
I have never rooted a phone. Can you please point me somewhere which shows how to unlock and root the N1 with my specs. My phone is pretty old. I am only rooting it because this is a spare one and I now have moved to SGS2.
PS: using a mac and Linux machine. If not then please show me a windows one. i'll try dual booting my macbook pro.

Have you unlocked your bootloader? That was how I did it though, there is no other way to root 2.3.4 without doing this at the moment.
That is what i want to know. How do i do that safely?
Well there is a way to safely root your phone without unlocking the bootloader, I did those steps recently and they worked fine for me.
1. You need to downgrade your phone to Froyo. Get the FRG83 image from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Nexus_One/Roms
Rename it to PASSIMG.zip and copy it to the root folder of your SD Card. Boot your phone into the bootloader and flash the image. This will wipe your device, so be sure to make a backup of your data and apps first.
2. Use SuperOneClick to root your phone. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
3. Now you need to flash a custom recovery. I used the Clockworkmod one, because flashing it is very simple: install the Rom Manager app from the market, it has an option to flash the recovery.
4. Now you are set to flash custom ROMs, either through Rom Manager or the Recovery. You should however do a Nandroid Backup first, in case anything goes wrong in flashing the ROM. Boot into Recovery and you should see a menu item saying Backup or something.
It's really not a big deal as it sounds, I can't guarantee that this will work for you. You should know what you are doing and if you feel unsafe about any of these steps, make sure to search the forums or the web about it, before you execute it.

Sorry, I didn't see your question until now
Actually, it IS very easy to do this, you can find the instructions here:
http://android.modaco.com/topic/299078-how-to-unlock-the-bootloader-on-your-nexus-one/
It does have some warranty implications though, but since I am already using an import set I don't care. According to some, HTC usually shuts one eye and fix your phone's hardware failures even if it has an unlocked bootloader, but YMMV.
Hello! Please help me!
I bought HTC Dream G1 on ebay with
installed Android 1.6 (DONUT) on it.
I heard that now there are android versions 2.x and i need to have so versions to install most of apps.

I have seen a lots of modifications of Roms in your forum but i don't understand nothing about this. /please recommend me/
Also I should add : I live in eastern europe (bulgaria) /because i heard that there re some US roms or.../??
P.S. Sorry for my stupid questinos, but i'm migrating from 186mhz windows 6.0. smartphone)) and i'm new to android...

Have a friend do it.
I did this, I stopped at this step "Now you have root!"

then I did this

using this:

then I followed some of this for the radio/spl

***probably best to follow this one instead***

and finally I installed this:

it's a lot to absorb at once and theres a lot of room for error... I'm still having issues as we speak
you found all the guides except for mine lol... which is basically all of that on one place...

Hey i was reading up about rooting for 2 weeks before i plunged in and took the step. Let's say on your first try, don't do anything that needs you to change radio etc.
Just use the superoneclick method to root it, then download rom manager (free from android market) and install clockworkmod recovery. This should be easy, as from rom manager all you need to do is click flash clockworkmod recovery, and it will do it for you.
Next find the rom you want, and download 3 files. One is the rom itself, the other is a kernel (example ezterry's) and finally gapps and put them on your sd card. Next reboot into recovery.
First you'll want to create a backup, go to backup and restore click backup, and let it do it's thing. Once it says backup complete, you'll need to wipe cache, and wipe date/factory reset.
Once you've done that, do install zip from sd card, and install the files in this order:
ROM first: (find where you put the zip file on your sd, and select it)
Then do install zip from sd card again & select the Kernel (if you need to flash a seperate kernel)
Then finally do install zip from sd card again and select the gapps, zip (this is basically the android market, and a few other google apps).
Next press reboot into recovery, and it should load into your new rom, if all has been done correctly. I just recently rooted and put a custom rom on my phone, and this is the way i did it, so it should work for you. Make sure you research rooting and flashing roms onto your phone, before you take the plunge though.
Just a quick background, I purchased my DS7 at staples and rooted it and installed CWM using the info found on the forums so I could connect to my ad-hoc tether. Last week I attempted to install the HC upgrade and got the mis-match message. I booted into CWM and started looping. In an effort to correct this I mistakenly wiped the memory (big mistake!). I found the instructions on flashing the stock ROM (turned out that it was TMO) and got the unit running again. I called Dell (I have posted in another thread on this) and they are to send a pickup. In the meantime I have found instructions on flashing the OEM stock wfi ROM and have done so. I, like many others, noticed that the service tag was wrong and edited PG23/line220 to reflect my correct tag ( note to posters of ROMs and those who would flash: before doing so write down all the information about your unit so you can make changes later if needed). I now have most everything back to pre-upgrade status, but Gingerbreak v1.2 will not root. When I attempt it the program runs but I get a message “Not sure what happened her. Either the exploit failed or the reboot failed. Please reboot manually and see if you have Superuser!” I reboot and nothing, no Superuser and no root access. Also, before I attempt the “unroot’ option is greyed out so I take it that the unit is not rooted nor can I see root files in file manager One thing I have not tried is the CWM un-install that was included in the stock ROM flash thread. Since I don’t see it and I boot into fastboot I am guessing that it is gone. Any suggestions or has anyone had this issue as well?
Another note, I too have the 338 version and no auto update yet. I am not real sure I want to update now. To those that have updated, can you connect to ad-hoc networks with out changing the WPA?
Big wall of text, if you're on 2.2.x reflash CWM 3.0 and flash Superuser.zip as a update.zip though it.
If you're on HC, flash CWM 4.0 and flash Superuser7.zip on it.
Superuser.zip will always work on 2.x roms.
Superuser7.zip will always work on 3.x roms.
If you try and run the wrong one it will just 'run' and give no error, it will simply not do anything, but it wont damage anything.
Thanks, you think cwm is still lurking and giving problems? So I need to reinstall cwm and use it to install the zip? Won't CWM interfere with the HC update?

If you have CWM installed you won't get the update automatically no matter if you have a matching ROM or not... you must be FULLY stock... but I see no sense in waiting, TheManii has already posted the releases that are coming out... why not just flash the zip
