I am working on a friend's captivate (att) and I have him running cognition ROM right now. Unfortunately, it still sucks and he hates his phone. I want to flash cyanogenmod to the phone, but I need to restore it to stock first (I think). I am trying to use AIO tool to flash the phone to stock, but ODIN hangs when I start it. Is there another way to switch ROMS without flashing back to stock first? I don't have to flash to stock with my Optimus V, so why it the Captivate such a PITA phone to mess with? Please help me. I am tired of my buddy complaining about his phone every day.

If the phone doesnt have the gb bootloaders then you can flash CM7 using any kernel with clockworkmod recovery.

I really wouldn't recommend CM7 if your friend isn't into phone development on his own, especially the nightly builds. However, if you're dead set on doing that, just do it without the AIO tool. Flash to stock with Odin one-click and root the phone some way (superoneclick is preferred) and then just follow the steps. Well, you actually don't require stock so long as your phone is rooted and not running GB bootloaders, but it's always safe to just go back to stock anyways.
For some reason though, ODIN will not flash to stock. Sometimes it will get as far as flashing modem.bin, but then it just hangs. It made it all the way to filesystem.rfs once, but again, it hung up. What is going on here? Is it my PC or do these phones just do that?
It could be a variety of problems. I'd reinstall the drivers and ODIN on your computer, because something may not have installed correctly. I know that I've never had any issues going back to stock with ODIN.
Now after failing so many times to flash the phone, I can't even get it to go into download mode anymore. I am using the volume up+volume down and plug usb method, but that all of a sudden will no longer start the phone. I am afraid that I may have bricked it. Any ideas?

Try the ADB method, instructions on this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
If all else fails, building a jig is very easy and cheap. My best guess is you had something installed incorrectly on your computer and when ODIN tried to do its thing it froze and then "software-bricked" your friend's captivate.

I have searched around and have found anyone with quite my same problem.
Here's my issue, my girlfriends Captivate wont enable USB Debugging in Download Mode. It works fine when the phone is booted into the OS but the AIO toolbox wont recognize USB debugging in Download Mode.
The phone is currently running fine with Precision. It's is just having some force close issues. But currently I am stuck on this ROM because of the lack of Debugging in download mode.
I have tried two different W7 computers. One is 32bit Professional and one is 64bit Ultimate.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers but to no avail.
Debugging mode had nothing to do with dl mode, what are you trying to do?
Edit: ok reading your comments again, are you having problems getting odin to recognize your phone?
CM7
Flash back to stock, but it never completes. Do I need to flash back to stock in order to flash a new rom? Because that seems to be what I have picked up.
No you do not have to flash stock. You are on precision, what kernel? What are you looking to flash?

In my knowledge, flashing back to stock is best way to flash new rom..to avoid any complications...but you flash new rom without going back to stock as well
I think you should use ODIN3 V1.7 or v1.3 to flash back to stock...Its better and tested way to flash back to stock...
I used AIO and i bricked my phone...but the developer of AIO said u should use version 2.5 as its more reliable then version 3.0
I am using the SuckerPunch #50 100HZ Kernel (which come with 3.5). And I haven't quite decided which ROM I will use yet now. I was going to try cognition.
About the whole flashing back to stock thing, I just noticed a lot of the directions for the ROMs mention it.
Flashing back to stock is largely an old need that still its used by many. When custom kernels with built in lag fixes started coming about you where advised to either disable lag fix before switching roms, or flashing stock. This was because the recovery in the kernel could not under stand the ext 4 partition the lag fix was using. Most of the built in recoveries in the roms out there today now can understand the partition, because of this flashing stock is not necessarily needed. That being said I am not sure what kernel cognition uses and if this would hold true.
There are more threads of people soft bricking their phone using odin than there are any other issues. All that being said I would not be flashing roms if you can not get your arms around odin. God forbid something does go wrong you need to be able to recover.

No I am not worried about flashing in Odin. i have a Fascinate and have never had any real issues (save for one). I just never saw any of the "flash back to stock" issue in the Fascinate forums. Is this lag fix the same as the Voodoo lagfix I use on my Fascinate?
Yes I understand they are different phones so I wont be trying to flash one ROM from one phone to another. i just meant the concept behind it.
Cognition uses stock KB1 kernel with voodoo lagfix and CWM

I you use Odin 1 click to stock. Never had any issues in over 100 flashes to stock. I rarely use it now because most roms install scripts remove any of the old rom fragments. Odin is a useful tool if something goes wrong during a flash and your getting fc's all the time. Simply hold volume and plug it in and go. I strayed away fro AIO toolbox due to multiple reports from it bricking their phone.
If the toolbox doesn't work just use Odin and all will be will. Its the easiest version of Odin there is (in my opinion)

You can also boot in recovery and re flash the rom. Wipe the dalvik cache and fix permissions if your getting FC's.

If I am following you, it sounds like odin does not see the phone in debugging mode.
I had am issue where odin would only see the phone in sync mode, and I could not get my computer to see the folders on the phone in mass storage mode.
I reinstalled the drivers and everything was fine after that.
So here't the full background, it's not long, please read:
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/i...-bricked-my-sgs-wonder-what-i-did-wrong.2032/
Long story short, it looks like I bricked my SGS when trying to flash with Odin, even though I followed the tutorial very closely. When I power up the phone, it just gives me the image with phone, exclamation mark and PC on it. It does, however, go into download mode when powered up with VolDown and center button.
How do I save it? Do I need the JIG (God, please say no! )
Have you tried reflashing with odin.
Jig is only needed when you cant get into download mode.
Also i just looked inside the darky rom topic.
Have you flashed the jvk rom first with the bootloaders?
Edit: as said below. If you gonna reflash, flash a stock rom. Not the darky rom. First priority is to make your phone work.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Yeah, you have download mode.
Now, fire up Odin and load a few rom files into it, connect the phone and see if the PC still recognises it. (Do not flash, Just a test)
If so...
Flash a stock rom.
Somehow, I was able to flash it with Odin in Download Mode this time. Phew! I read somewhere that the flash might fail if You're using wrong USB port. At first I connected my phone to a eSATA/USB combo port, and for the second time (after brick) I tried a normal USB 2.0 port in my laptop. Maybe that's what made the difference, I have no idea.
Anyway, I'm running stock Samsung 2.3 rom and am trying to install Darky's 10.0 RC3 on it - I am running into some problems, but thankfully they're much less serious than the brick that I was able to fix.
Thanks for Your help!
I ran into similar problems last week. A rom wouldn't flash, so I gave it an hour and it proceeded nowhere. Had to pull the plug on it.
Sometimes it just takes a few times plugging and unplugging repeatedly until it just happens to get detected by Windows. Maybe just a bit of luck too
Congrats on your recovery.
Just wondering which stock 2.3 rom did you use and which Odin setting you used to get your phone up and working again.
Here is my post / problem, seems similar to yours

Thanks
I had the same issue like warnec on my first darkyy flash, finally everything went fine...don't worry!
just try to reflash with odin (maybe going for a stock version first is a good idea), be sure to do everything as mentioned in the guides out there. and be sure your computer works stable, maybe you want to quit some tasks in the background (however it should work even without but something crashed my odin once...)
Reflash with Odin to make your phone work again. I suggest using a stock 2.2.1/2.3.3 ROM. It is important that it consists of the 512.pit file, a PDA file, a Phone file and a CSC file. The ROM must have bootloaders included!
Now, disconnect your phone and turn it off.
Start Odin and load all the files. Tick 'Repartition'.
Start your phone in Download Mode by pressing Vol-Down, Home and Power.
Connect it to your PC and wait for Odin to say 'Added!'.
Now hit Start, wait 2-3 minutes until it is done and your phone should succesfully reboot!

does not sound very good...could you solve your problem yet?
Had to take the phone into Bell. Waiting on return of it and currently using a loaner HTC Desire Z from Bell.
Tried all day using the search tool but couldnt find anything like this.
Tried to install continuum 6.1 on my cappy from a previous froyo build. Odin said pass on the kernel but now my phone boots to the att screen, then a fuzzy, static-like screen then promptly reboots to do it all over again. I can get into download mode but cant boot the phone normaly. Help would be appreciated. Thanks for helping a noob guys.
Did you flash Gingerbread bootloaders? like Cezar says too?
Sounds like a bootloop

If you can get to download mode, you're not out of luck. Go to the ODIN3 One-click and you should be able to get yourself back to a stock state where you can start clean.
Quick warning - if the rom you were trying to flash had the GB bootloaders, be extremely careful. The one-click above will overwrite the bootloaders, and if something comes unplugged during that time, you will be in need of JTAG service.

Very true. I've seen several people use the wrong one, and the naming convention of ODIN3 and ODIN 3-Button doesn't really help that.
So i replace an odex file which i shouldnt have and the phone wouldnt boot. I tried to delete cache and partition to reinstall a rom but CWM wouldnt read my sd, just the interal one. My phone was recognizing in odin one click and now it says device not recognized. I can still enter download mode with the volume up/down but it still wont recognize. I really need help so anything would be great.
Thanks - MaDDaWg
Boot into the bootloader if you can and do a full complete recovery back to stock settings and reroot from there.
I Haz 3D!
Im kind of a noob, i only know how to go into download mode on the phone. how do i get into bootloader. also what would i recover it.
thanks.

Since I dont know about the captivate that much it should not be different by much since its android. You need to download the STOCK ROM for your phone. Basically it is the software your phone came with out of the box. You need to put it on your zipcard and boot into bootloader(ask a fellow captivate owner how to get into this) and it will recognize the stock rom zip if named correctly and automatically update/restore your phone. Then you can reroot and install your recovery and start all over.
I Haz 3D!
Thanks for the help man, i was able to reflash it eventually. the weird thing is that now if i connect as mass storage once, it wont do it again without restarting the phone.
Are you plugging your phone into a USB port that's closest to the motherboard? Odin is finicky. Is your USB cable good? What Rom were you running when you messed up your phone?

I was using the front USB ports. the cable is good i just got the phone and its been working. I was using 2.2, which is what came on it. i dont know the exact rom that was on it but i believe it was stock. i was thinking about putting the cyanogenmod on it now. Do you think its better than stock?

Okay, so I have installed Speedrom kernel earlier, then tried to flash ICSSGS, and after it restarted the phone, it went to the Samsung Captivate logo. I reflashed Speedrom via Heimdall. Once it restarted I continued into reflashing ICSSGS from CWM. It continued installing, and I selected the options I wanted (I tried both kernels, to no avail). After it said it was done and restarted I was greeted by the Samsung Captivate logo. I have been stuck here ever since.
I was running I897UCKB2.
I can access download mode, recovery, I can flash new recoveries and new roms. However no roms actually flash. I have searched all over and can not seem to find anyone with exactly the same results. Maybe I am searching the wrong terms.
I have tried Kies, but can not get into the phone, so I can not use it. I have tried odin3 1.7, I have also tried several odin one click setups, all of which connect to the phone, and attempt to install, 2-3 hours later, or even 8 i come back to it still frozen. When I restart the phone I am stuck at the /!\ screen. using the UnBrickable mod, I can get it back into recovery, I can not get it to go any other way besides UnBrickable Mod.
I also can not access ADB or fastboot, it is always waiting on the device.
I am at a complete lost here. Tomorrow I plan on launching Ubuntu and seeing if I can fix the issue.
Does anyone know why the ROMs are ot flashing correctly?
edit: I should add that after attempting to install ICSSGS my phone is no longer recognized at i897 and incapable of installing CM9. After changing the build.prop I am still unable to get it to recognize. As of now attempting to install CM9 installs CWM 5.5 and reboots, and then never does anything.
Try using nexus drivers on ur pc.
Then if u can get into download mode, flash to stock of ur choice and then use TRusselo's Guide, that is stickied in the Q & A forum, to proceed further.
U can use the /!\ screen as a download screen.

I woke up this morning with it still stuck at Firmware upgrade. My computer went to sleep during the night.. Thought I had turned it off. Luckily it looks like when I turned it on, Odin One-Click for 2.1 started up and started flashing it. Phone restarted and actually appears to be doing something.
So I guess Flash Odin Twice?

As for Trusselo's Guide, its the one I followed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266
Doesnt flash ROMs for me. I tried it again in Ubunutu. It is a no go. I am not as experienced as I'd like to be flashing, but its not a hard process, So I am very unsure as to whats going on that flashes are not working. Well ROM flashes at least, I now am running, Eclair 2.1-update1. I am going to try to flash a new bootloader, the e2 and see if I can maybe get around the issue I am having.
Not sure why things are not going good for u according to TRusselo's Guide...??
Be sure and read plenty before u flash. Know what u r doing and the risks. Newer Stickied Threads in the Captivate Forums r ur friend.
I tried flashing a few more times, and got nothing. I began to give up, but last second tried installing CM9 Nightly, it went through finally. Haven't done anything different. I checked the videos I recorded to see if I had did anything different. Only Difference is flashing the bootloader twice before running CWM to install CM9.
Glad that nightmare is over. Girlfriend should be very excited that it is working. Now if I only had a 100% Sense free and 100% working ICS for my Amaze.
Thanks for your help.
Glad u got it going. Thx for reporting back.
