[Q] Kindle for Revo - LG Revolution

Is there a way to upgrade Kindle on the Revolution to the newest version? I've tried upgrading in the market and off of a sd, both rooted and un-rooted. Every time it comes back with an installation failed error. Is it just my phone?
It's not too big of a deal but it would be nice if I could upgrade the apps that come pre-installed on the phone.

If you are rooted, you could use root explorer to go to \system\apps and delete (or add .bak to the name) the kindle.apk from in there, and start over by downloading it from the market. This may remove all your current settings so prepare for that.
Just remember to mount r/w before going and deleting it in root explorer (upper right hand corner).

Alright, using root explorer I've mounted as r/w, gone into system/apps and removed the kindle.apk (backed it up first) and tried to install it from the market but I still get the same error.
But, now when I try to sideload the newer Kindle apk I get an "Unknown Error -8".
Would there be other files that need to be removed or edited other than just the apk?

did you rename kindle.odex as well? This should have been easy, but I've been testing it out and it's obviously not.
I believe we might be running into an issue where there are other applications that rely on this program, as well as a signature being required for this system app. It may require deodexing of the system in order to get this one replaced.
So far I had tried renaming kindle.odex, kindle.apk, the com folder in data/data, unmounting the sdcard (per a recommendation I received), and it gives me an installation error -8 when trying to install from the market.
I haven't tried side copying it into the system folder yet as I don't have the apk lying around at the moment.... Still looking into it, though. Since you have the apk, can you rename kindle.odex, side load your new kindle.apk and let me know if that works?
You may have to reboot if sticking it in the system apps folder

Progress?
Any solution to this? I'm having the same problem on my Motorola Defy. 2.2 rooted phone. Also could not upgrade Kindle. Have deleted all Kindle files and still getting -8 error. I moved the Kindle_3.0.1.70.apk to /system/app and tried to install it there but got "Application not installed" result.

I renamed the odex and side loaded the apk. Rebooted. And nothing. If I run the APK i get the same -8 Error.
I remember reading about unmouting the sd card like you mentioned. So I hooked the phone up to my computer in Mass Storage mode so that both of the sd cards would unmount from the phone... and I still got the same -8 error.
I did notice something though, the Kindle version number is 2.0.5. I've searched and searched online for 2.0.5 and I can only find up to 2.0.4 then it jumps to 3.0. Is it possible that this is a tweaked version of Kindle and that's somehow messing things up?
Unfortunatly I don't know enough about android/programming...

You can add removing the references in packages.xml and packages.list. This is a tough one. I'm starting to believe that it's possible that Kindle only installs on certain devices (as in it does a check)? That would be crazy, but where the heck else would it be embedded that it wouldn't install from the market?

quick update on this issue:
I was able to catch Cubed tonight, and he worked with me on this issue, and we actually got the market one installed! (more like "continued for me" using my phone and Linux box)
The Amazon packages on this phone are using a shared key. The key to getting around this was to eliminate everything Amazon, including the non-kindle, but Amazon-related references within packages.xml
The problem is, I'm not positive what the final fix was, but I suspect it had to do with packages.xml. Cubed removed amazon mp3 from the phone, removed the remaining amazon references in packages.xml (completely stripped it from all amazon references and the user as well as the signed tag, not just kindle specific). I'd make sure you know a bit about xml if you want to give that a try as you want to make sure your open and close tags match. Don't want to remove partial tags.
Finally, there was one more file in system/etc called amazon-kindle.properties and it contained two keys. That was renamed as well. You can try renaming that one and report back if that was the fix if you don't want to get into the xml bit.
After this sweeping removal, it required a reboot to finally install from the market. This turned out to be why we didn't pinpoint the issue, because without the reboot, nothing worked.
Sorry for being vague, but I'm tired and heading off to bed. I suspect Cubed will release this fix in his future ROMs, but I just wanted to give a heads up that it has been done! Thanks Cubed for going the extra mile as usual with me on this one.
If anyone wants to get into the dirty specifics on this one, we can go there, but it might have to either come from Cubed, or wait until I come back from my vacation next week (Friday)

Hey, guys. I've been living without a Kindle app on this phone for a while now. Is this still on your radar?

It hasn't fallen off the radar, and all new development has been done without the locked Kindle. The problem has been that Cubed's focus has been on CM7 - and that's massive development (he has to write drivers for everything and the kitchen sink), so he hasn't deployed a 1.2 version of his ROM.
If I get some time around here, I'll look into creating a CWR zip that will hopefully take care of this issue once and for all.

That would be great, I just noticed the Kindle issue last night, and just discovered this thread before posting a new one. I will watch for further updates on the issue. thanks again guys, you seem to be putting more work into making this phone great than lg and verizon did into making it a mediocre phone... There's a real gem here, once you strip away everything that verizon and lg did to it!

I am not a Kindle user, but I just downloaded it from the market and it works perfect. Don't know why. Just searched Kindle, downloaded, and read.

Yeah... Me too... Thats weird. I'm a big time Kindle user. Big disappointment.... My fingers are crossed, but I have all the time in the world.

The word is that if you do:
pm uninstall com.amazon.amazonmp3
pm uninstall com.amazon.kindle
from a shell and reboot, this should fix the kindle/amazon issue.
but I restored back to stock and was able to install kindle - has anyone tried it lately?

I tried to install last night. No luck. I'm on decrapped. Right now I'm just using my archos tablet... It'll do for now... Lol

I finally got it installed and working from the market. I can say for certain that I was unable to get it to install immediately before removing the Amazon reference in the packages.xml file, then after removing it and rebooting, it installed just fine. There may be other things that I did that are also necessary, I don't know. I can only say that this one thing appears to be necessary.
It is in /data/system/packages.xml
For me it was the last entry. This is what I removed:
<shared-user name="com.amazon" userId="10069">
<sigs count="1">
<cert index="0" />

<item name="android.permission.INTERNET" />
<item name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" />
<item name="android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE" />
</perms>
</shared-user>

It looks like the update from Verizon also fixed this problem. Kindle 3.0.1.5 is installed with the VW-update and today I was able to update Kindle to 3.0.1.70 from the market with no problems

Thanks xcb! This did the trick for me too. Even tho I went from Decrap1.1 rom (no Kindle) to RevoltRom1.2 which includes the latest OTA update I still couldn't re-install the Kindle app until I made the changes to packages.xml. It was a bit of a pain to make the edits but well worth it!

Cannot install Kindle app after telco unlock
Hi majorpay
Any update on your "....I'll look into creating a CWR zip that will hopefully take care of this issue once and for all"? I am having the same problem.
It started after I unlocked my Android device from my telco provider. The Kindle app was never included but I could go to the market and install. Now it does not appear in the market, and even if I try accessing the app in the market through my browser it does not recognize my hardware as a supported device.
Thx!

[STICKY][FIX] Full market (improved market fix) on G Tablet

**NOTE FOR VEGAN TAB USERS** Steps 1-5 are no longer necessary for you, as the build.prop file in your /system directory has a working market fingerprint out of the box. Just apply the standard Market Fix (steps 6-8) and you are good to go.
I've seen several people complaining that the "full market" we had on G Tablet after the established market fixes wasn't quite full. Well, I've solved that problem, through a mixture of reading what others have done with other devices and experimentation. I will not promise that this gives you *everything*, but I do believe it gives you apps that otherwise required the release-keys status. Some of the apps you get may of course not work. But several applications I looked for before (TV.com for example, with streaming CBS video content) were not available with the previous market fix, and are now available with this fix. In fact, TV.com even works, except for a very minor video glitch in the upper left corner of the screen, and it's a cool app to get some quick streaming video content going on your G Tablet.
**NOTE** I take no responsibility for you screwing up your G Tablet. Please backup your system in Clockwork Recovery before doing any of this!
**EDIT** Removed unneccessary steps after feedback in this thread. Process is now very simple. Edited step 1 to clarify you need paid version of Root Explorer.
Here's how to do it:
0) Backup in Clockwork Mod. Please. I don't want you mad at me if this messes up your ROM.
1) Get the paid version of Root Explorer installed on your G Tablet. Apparently the free version lacks a text editor. If you only have the free version, the text editing step will need to be done in a separate program, or you will need to copy build.prop to your desktop, edit it there, and copy it back. Or use adb to push an edited build.prop to your tablet. Just buy Root Explorer though, it makes this very easy.
2) Browse in Root Explorer to /system. Then click on Mount R/W.
3) Long click on build.prop and click on Open In Text Editor.
4) Scroll down to the line ro.build.fingerprint=....
You are going to replace that with the following text:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/passion/passion/mahimahi:2.2/FRF91/43546:user/release-keys
5) Now you are going to click on Save and Exit. And then remount the /system directory as R/O.
6) Now you are going to re-do the original Market Fix. I used the simple version illustrated here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l-nySibzeA&feature=related First, make sure Market is running, and browse around in it for a few seconds. If you don't do this, there may be no cache to clear and for some reason the market fix may not work. Then, go to Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->Running and scroll down to Market. Then hit Clear Cache, followed by Force Stop **DO NOT CLEAR DATA FOR MARKET, JUST CACHE**. Then go back, scroll down to Google Services Framework, hit Clear Data, then Force Stop.
7) Now try starting Market again and you get the famous Market Error. Now shut down the G Tablet, then turned it back on. Wait for Wifi to connect to your network before doing anything! I forgot to do that on the first try, so I rebooted again, waited for wifi to connect this time.
8) Now restart Market again. It seems to have sourced the fingerprint from build.prop somewhere in steps 6-7. Searches for previously missing apps now show up. Voila! A truly full market!
And steps 6 and 7 can almost certainly be replaced by the equivalent steps using Titanium Backup that I know a lot of people have been using, particularly with TNT Lite. I am running ZPad 2.2 here, so YMMV with TNT Lite. Please keep me informed if this works/doesn't work for you if you try it!
Credit goes to: Paul at Modaco for hacking on the Advent Vega and making the Market work fully on that device and for coming up with a working build.prop for the Advent Vega, Roebeet for inspiring me to look at the Vega ROM stuff with his current work on the VEGAn ROM, Rothnic for his excellent work on the ZPad ROM that I'm currently using. Basically, I'm just hacking and slashing here, this wasn't any sort of rocket science.
Paul from Modaco is awesome -- and you are as well, for making this post!
Any apps in particular that you found after this, that were missing before? I might want to try this on my device. Thanks again!
FWIW my Nexus One running a CM 6.0 nightly from 2 days ago has
ro.build.fingerprint=google/passion/passion/mahimahi:2.2.1/FRG83/60505:user/release-keys
Note the more up-level version (2.2.1) and build (FRG83). I haven't tried this on my GTab yet but I will as soon as I can get it up and running.

The only specific things I can tell you off the top of my head are TV.com which I know wasn't there because I searched for it a few hours ago. Also, I tried searching Market for Handcent before and found 14 or 15 results, and after this process I was able to retrieve 24 results.
There were a bunch of random apps I saw in the Top Apps list that I don't remember seeing earlier today. So that was enough to convince me that most of the missing 10-20% of apps are there now.
And thanks for the compliment, especially coming from the guy who made the G Tablet useful!

I'm sure that will work too, though the FRF91 build string seems to match the existing data in the ZPad ROM at least. I'm guessing the two signatures will produce essentially identical Market results.

Yeah. I may be somewhat overoptimistic going with FRG83. The build and version numbers identify the version of the system code so apps may read them and make some assumptions as to certain API characteristics. We're probably closer to FRF91 than FRG83 on TnT Lite.

Yes this is Galaxy Tab. Probably better a Tegra tab once a full market one comes out.
I did the following:
1) Edited build.prop as described in step 4, rebooted and searched for tv.com - no results
2) I preformed the edits in step 4a, rebooted and searched for tv.com - no results
3) I stopped Market & Google Services Framework & wiped Google Services Framework, rebooted after getting Market Error, waited for wifi and opened Market to search for tv.com - no results.
I can't say if it works. I haven't had trouble finding apps, but I can't find tv.com before or after the steps above. Perhaps, I missed something.
Wait!!!! It does work. I tried again after posting and it's there! Thanks!
Is it possible to post the TV.com app? I don't want to do the mod but would love that app!
Great post man worked like a charm, I can get my slingbox app from the market now.
Edit: dammit I can't get the downloaded sling client to launch even after trying it many times which usually worked.
I'm going to give it a shot but being a newbie I'm not clear on this step:
5) Now you are going to click on Save and Exit. And then remount the /system directory as R/O
Will "remount as r/o" be an option to select at this point? If not, can you provide more detail.
The rest of the mod is easy enough to follow.
Thanks.

News & weather in cm7

I can't figure out if I'm crazy or not but should my cm7 have a news & weather widget? I thought I uninstalled it with TB so I flashed over the top and I got back all other apps I removed except that. Using Root Explorer you need to copy the GenieWidget.apk into /system/app. Then you need to change permissions on it to rw-r--r--. If you do not set permissions correctly, you won't see the widget. If you are using TE to copy to /system/app, you can change permissions with chmod 644 /system/app/GenieWidget.apk. Once you do that, you need to reboot. I usually wipe my caches whenever I put something in /system/app but I don't think it is required to do so.
Alternatively you can use adb push from your PC to /system/app and then the permissions should be set for you. You still need to reboot for it to be available.

Netflix update?

When I run Netflix, it asks me if I want to update. If I answer OK, it cannot find the updated version. Netflix does not show up at all in the Market. I wonder if the edited build.prop causes this.
I just set up a NC for the wife, found the previous Netflix apk and loaded it, but did not modify the prop file...it works, but still gave the same "update" message (but no update apk). Anyone hear from Netflix on this?
I have a HTC Dinc today there was a update for netflix. So maybe just need to sideload the apk. I will try and find the the apk on my Dinc and try it if it works I will post it. I just tried the one from the one from Dinc it worked and took away the update crap. Now if someone can tell me how to add the apk to here I will post it.

I installed that and Netscape said that the service is not available on my device.
I looked at the file and it changed the manufacturer line to HTC, but left the model as NookColor. Editing this line fixed it again, so it appears that the Nook Fixer app needs some more tweaking.
Too bad, as it requires many fewer steps than editing build.prop (I use Root Explorer, which allows me to mount the partition as rw).
I tried your fix and I still have the problem anymore suggestions anyone.
I figured that it was because CM7 updated to a newer gingerbread version in the nightlies and netflix isn't compatible, therefore not showing up for an incompatible device in the market

[Q] Amazon update?????!!!!

I believe Amazon released an update today as my KFHD just rebooted itself and turned back on with a progress bar. My question or issue is this: does an update automatically cause a rooted KFHD to lose root access? I still have access to Google Play store and a bunch of apps I could only access through root. And most of the apps still work except LMT Launcher, which is the only one that is no longer working as far as ive noticed.So all I have to do is plug back in and root my KFHD again and I should be good, right?

None of this seems overly important, but then again I do like to have the latest version as long as there is no harm to the root.

Anything you install as a system apk will be deleted. When amazon sends an update it typically sends system.img, recovery.img and boot.img.
That is why the lmt launcher will not work because it has to be installed as a system.apk to work, same with root access since su binary is placed within the system files.
if you want to install the 2nd bootloader, you should not update. Amazon have fixed the bootloade with the update and so it dosn't work for now. i don't know, if it perhaps work with soupkit, because the insallation is a little bit different, but the resultat is the same (I could install kinelogy 1.1 after doing that).
I'm still on 7.2.1, found Wi-Fi performance/range considerably better than on 7.2.3, unless 7.3.0 improves it I won't be updating for quite some time.
This explains why I lost root and Go Launcher HD yesterday. Regained root with the same Noob Simple guide here with little more than annoyance. The file to prevent the OTA update had been moved per the guide (otacerts.zip) but think I deleted it in a cache cleaning frenzy... that will learn me

Ouch! I got caught by this update . . . i am now running 7.30 on my KFTT 7"
Sad, since I had a nice rooted image all set up well. Unfortunately, I became a bit lazy and did not check on whether or not I had effectively disabled updates during my last restore/reflash of 7.2.3 (I had not done that ;-(
sigh! Like you, I have all my apps and the Play store working, but anything requiring root -like root explorer or TIBU, won't work until I can reroot on this version -or flashback. . . The only question is whether the root exploitation works on this new version, I am not sure any of us has tried yet. . .oh well. . here we go (again!)
EDIT: OK, I was able to re-root the same way I did before (used the tools in prokennexusa noob threads!) All back to normal!

Same root method worked, system feels about the same with tweaks installed and benchmarked similarly (7344 vs 7444 with AnTuTu)
I just can't get my launcher off of the stock one. Nothing will take.
I simply plugged my KFHD back in and re-rooted. I regained access to applications that required system access. So my LMT is working again. I didn't lose any apps as far as I've noticed. This update turned out to be a pretty minor inconvenience.

I had this issue as well - and then noticed something else that was really weird. When I tried to move to /system/app it only moved to system - but I also noticed (at least in my case) it was renaming the file by adding "app" (which was the folder name I was trying to move it to) on the front of the file name - so... GoLauncher HD.apk was being renamed appGoLauncher.apk but was landing in the /system folder instead of /system/app
So - I created a new folder called "temp" in the /System/App directory (i.e /system/app/temp) and moved the files there. Sure enough, they landed in /system/app with the the word "temp" appended to the front of the file name, so GoLauncher.apk was now tempGoLauncher.apk. However, it was in the right directory - so I then simply renamed it by removing the "temp" from the front of the name and continued with install
I still have lots of other issues though in getting it to work. It appeared to be working for a while, but has stopped again.

Actually, I tried 3 different ways.
1) I reluctantly attempted ProKennexusa's method via the KFFFirstAide tool. I say reluctantly since I'm pretty much a Nova snob. I guess luckily for me, it wouldn't take.
2) I then moved onto downloading Nova from the store. The store claimed that both installs went good, but had no option to change my launcher. Upon inspection, the Nova launcher file was nowhere to be found on the device. The pro unlocker could be found, but no the launcher.
3) Since I had a couple of older copies in Dropbox, I figured I'd try those. Usually I could install straight from Dropbox. Not last night. I could launch the install, but the Kindle wouldn't allow me to press the install button. I then just saved the file to the device and still couldn't get it to install. It wasn't until moving it to system/app that I was able to actually install it. But still, no option to set it as my launcher.
This morning, in a bit of Kindle rage, I literally rebooted the device 23 straight times pausing between boots to see what happened. On the 23rd reboot, it finally asked me which launcher to set as default. So now I finally have gotten away from the freakish kindle launcher and am back at home with Nova.

[Q] Any way to install stock AOSP browser on rooted KF 7" HD?

I personally like the stock android browser for quick internet (not to mention that it supports flash). I tried to copy the browser.apk file from another device and transfer it to my KF HD 7", but when installing got a message saying "Parse Error" - There is a problem parsing the package. So, obviously that method will not work.
Does anyone out there have a method to get the stock android browser onto the KF HD 7?
Thanks in advance!
You need to push it or copy it to the /system/app folder, and give it root permissions.

Thanks for your reply. I had already moved the .apk file to the /system/app folder and attempted to run it there. That's when I got the parse error described above. It did not ask for root permissions, so I wasn't able to grant them. Unless there is something else that I am missing?
Thanks again for your help!

There shouldn't be a superuser request. To install the stock browser, first:
a.) Move it to /system/app
b.) Give it root permissions from there like this: rw-r--r--. You can do this in an app like ES File explorer by holding the app and selecting "permissions." Just check the boxes that apply.
c.) Reboot--the app will probably crash if you try to launch it without restarting your system. After the Kindle reboots, try the app to make sure it works. This method is how you move any app to the /system/app folder and make it work correctly (although some won't work if you do this).
Hope this helped. If you have anymore questions, go ahead and ask

Thanks for the instructions. (And sorry for the delay getting back to you). I didn't get a chance to try this until just now.
Unfortunately, I'm still not able to get this to work. I keep getting the Parse Error when I attempt to install the .apk. I double checked everything, and the permissions are fine, and I restarted the Kindle Fire, and still no luck. I can only think of two things that might still be the issue:
(1) I got my browser.apk from a Jellybean 4.2 version of Android, it is possible that it is too new for the Kindle Fire version. (Not sure where I could get an older version, though).
(2) Amazon may just not play nicely with normal .apk files.
Yea you usually get a parse error if its for a newer version of android.

Any idea where I could pick up a clean copy of an older version? I'm actually not sure what version of android Amazon Kindles are running.
Kindles run ice cream sandwich based os, I don't know offhand where you could get a copy without having to download a ROM and extracting the apk from it without flashing it.

Thanks... I just realized that my husband's android phone runs ice cream sandwich... I'm going to try to get the browser.apk file from him when he comes home tonight. If that doesn't work, I'll try grabbing it from a ROM. Thanks again.

Someone uploaded the stock AOSP Browser.apk on the Kindle Fire HD Themes & Apps forum a while back, which was pulled from a phone running ICS or something. I attached it at the bottom. I had it working fine on my Kindle when I was running stock OS. All I did was move it to my SD card, push it to "/system/app," and grant it root permissions. I had to do it this way, as it would force close if I tried to install it the normal way.
And Amazon does play nice with some .apk files. It's just a matter of finding the right ones. Unfortunately, you can't know until you install it as to whether or not it works or not.

Thanks. I somehow or another missed the notification of your reply, so just now got around to downloading and attempting to install this version of browser.apk. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me, either. It fails in a different way, gets part way through the install process and then just gives me a message saying "Application not installed." *sigh* Ah well. Thanks for your help anyway!

I was finally able to get it working... I went back to the forum you mentioned and found an older version of the browser.apk that finally worked. Still won't "install" and I can only access the browser from an app manager software, not the KFHD system, but it exists. Thanks!
