3G Service Question? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My area just got 3G service. In my Notification Bar I see the "H"icon and from time to time I see quick flash of the "3G" should I always see the "3G" not sure exactly how Data Packages work. Is there some setting I need to change or do now that I have 3G service?

This is a question those are usually asked in the Q&A section. Although this one in particular could have been answered by a simple search.
H stands for hspa and is 3g only slightly faster. You have 3g now enjoy.

H is 3G, but faster. Nothing to worry about. Most custom ROMs allow you to see the H whereas stock does not. A search would have answered this easily.

Thanks for the replies. I knew what the icons meant because I had previously done a Search for that but wasn't sure why they kept changing back and forth. I'll try Posting on Custom ROM site to find out the reason then.

That's normal behavior for custom ROMs in 3G service. I have never understood why it does that either. Even my WinMo phones did that with custom ROMs. Expect to see H most of the time, it will seemingly randomly switch to 3G (for a brief moment), but that switch will never cause you to drop signal, or lose bandwidth. For all intents and purposes for every day use ignore that difference.

I know, right?
I don't upload and don't download much either; I'd leave it on Edge if I didn't want to be able to talk and use data, so this is just what I needed.
Awesome link!!!! Thanks! Much better battery life now!

Wow this is great! My DL and UL speeds with 3G are almost the exact same or close to the speeds of HSPA, with less battery drain!! Awesome. 3G is just strong in my area, waaaaaay better signal. Thanks again.
Looking at how my phone changes from "H" to "3G", it seems to do it intelligently. When nothing that requires data is done on the phone, such as scrolling through homescreens or being in your app drawer, 3G is used. When data is needed, such as loading web pages or downloading "H" is used. With this auto switching, it seems like the phone does try to optimize battery life between HSPA and 3G so I don't think this fix is really that necessary.
The only thing I noticed is that is when using gTalk, it switches between HSPA and 3G depending on if a message is being sent or if the phone is stationary. If I send a message, "H" comes on and when I don't, it's "3G". If changing between HSPA and 3G does drain battery, then this could be a source of battery drain if you send small messages quickly (how one would chat) back and forth.
Can anyone chime if it consumes battery when it changes between 3G and H?
It doesn't consume more when switching, but HSPA consumes a lot more than 3G. I was previously running HSPA all the time and now just 3G. I did this trick yesterday and I am seeing very good results already.
Bumping this bcuz this is really a battery saver!!!!

Indeed. I'd remembered DG mentioning hspa as a big battery drainer. So when I stumbled on to this little app I was def interested
I am def getting much better battery with the HSPA.

[Q] CM7/MIUI and 850mhz Band on i9000m

I've tried a lot of combinations possible and can't seem to get the 850mhz band enabled on my i9000M. Anybody else able to get good reception with miui/cm7 and an i9000m in canada?

All the Canadian ones are in the Captivate directory. They're still in the SF repository. Why would anyone look in the i9000 section to find 850mhz capable basebands?
I ran JL2 for months, Then KC1 for a while. Now onto 2.3.3 with KC1 modem. Not much difference between JL2 and KC1. Both have amazing battery life. The biggest difference is I find the KC1 modem way better. I dropped calls at my house often with the last few months of JL2 but now I get good reception.
I can't for the life of me figure out how to check if my 850 bands are on or not. Or if the modem is even installed.
Anyone who could guide me in the right direction would be most kind.
For some reason my web browser doesn't connect through 3G, but it does with wifi, any hints?
Also thanks for the modem shadoslayer.

Because the Captivate != i9000m? I wouldn't think to check under the captivate section for modems for the i9000m, since the captivate is the SGH-i896. Considering it is a different build of CM7 for the captivate and the two aren't compatible, I wouldn't have thought the modems were either.

On the status bar, do you have "3G" or "H" beside the signal bars? If you have a H, you're using HSDPA, which is good.
As for checking the bands under CM7, I have no idea how either and would really like to know since CM doesn't support samsung unstructured supplementary service data (USSD)...
And np on the modem and thanks for Furry for pointing out the modems are in the captivate section of sourceforge.
hey guys, while on this topic. What do you guys get with speed test? I'm on CM7 and KC1 and just ran it. Got 113ms ping, 1.27Mbps, 3.28Mbps. This is at 4:30pm. Ran it a few times, switching between Toronto and Oakville servers. Slow download
Edit:
Sigh. Just reran and got 6.11Mbps down and 1.59Mbps. Much better.

Yeah I have the H, so HSDPA is working, I suspect that's good for rural areas and low signal areas and I'm using most of my bands?
Also found this:

It gets a bit of info on the radio methinks, but it hasn't gotten me closer to figuring out why my browsers only connect via wifi.

I didn't know about that code, thanks. Still doesn't show if the phone is on 1900/850 though. And I'm curious, when/how does the phone decide to switch between the two?

Those are Samsung USSD codes and will work fine under any Samsung based rom, but they will not work under CM7. Those USSD codes must be in code either not released or not released under GPL for use in CM7.
I've asked a bunch of times and no one ever answered, so I'm assuming there is no way under CM7 to see which band the phone is currently using, which is incredibly frustrating!

You have gotten the answer a few times...there is no way to check the band in CM7. If you feel you need one, raise it in the Dev forum once they open it back up to feature requests in a few weeks.
I would advise flashing KC1 and seeing how it goes. Keep an eye on your battery life, and how often the notification bar flips from 3G to H, and run Speedtests a few times a day. After a few days, decide if it is working better for you or not..if not, flash something else.
Modems are like fake IDs...if one doesn't work, flash another one.

Sprint htc one what are the real benefits of the 4.3 firmware ????

I got my new updated firmware that came out with 4.3 flashed on my sprint htc one flashed to straight talk verizon s-off with moonshine. What are the improvements that I"am supposed to see ????
I have had problems with all 4.3 roms and I have tried them all, my call signal most times shows zero bars when its full signal, sometimes it will go full bars but always goes back to none fast and the phone is never moved.
I thought flashing the 4.3 firmware would fix this issue but it did not.
Another thing is I use it on a verizon samsung network extender at home which its the old model the first model they came out with that was call signal only no 3g data were the newer model has 3g, but I notice it does this when I"am not home sometimes also but I have not really watched it while running errands in a good while. When I"am on the network extender when I call out or on a call received my phone will show full bars the whole time.
I think its working ok, but the no bars on my phone is annoying I mean I might as well not even have bars on my phone at all if they are not going to be accurate.
Anyone have any ideas ?

Not convinced you actually know what you're talking about. For one, the firmware version is not 4.3-- that's the ROM software version, which is very distinct from the radio version that came with the 4.3 OTA. 4.3 changed how cell signal is displayed to match the available/in-use data connection as opposed to the 1xRTT voice/text connection. Besides that, if you're using the Sprint HTC One on Verizon, you're not going to get particularly good speeds even with 3G.
If you don't like the behavior, there's probably an XPOSED module or a downgrade to 4.1 to fix that.
I dont know where your getting your info, but there are firmware downloads for people that are rooted and do not receive htc / sprint ota updates for 4.3.
Check out the following and see for yourself...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46123838
Then see either full firmware or Full Firmware w/o hboot, boot, recovery (for s-off users (thx bigdaddy619 for testing!!!)
The phone is capable of running verizon 3g just as well as sprint 3g.
Unless you have a sprint htc one on straight talk verizon like I do then you have no idea of how verizon 3g data works on a sprint htc one and you are providing an uneducated guess, which straight talk verizon 3g data speeds are not any part of this posting.
Perhaps could it be you either work for verizon or sprint and just hope to deter people from flashing their sprint htc one or any other smartphone to straight talk verizon ????
If verizon was not so much of blood sucking company trying to squeeze every penny they can from their post paid subscribers and would compete with sprint and t mobile and even more on the prepaid side where sprint mvno's get lte and t mobile prepaids get lte and even at&t prepaids get lte even straight talk at&t gets lte, but verizon will not compete and allow lte, this will all be verizons undoing, because with sprints infusion of cash from softbank they will be building lte very quickly and when sprint merges with t mobile in the near future then verizon will be strong armed to either compete or be left behind and they will be put down like a dead horse and many people like myself will love to see the day that their greediness and cockiness comes back to haunt them and they will then pay for their arrogance...

You may want to read a little. 4.3 is not the firmware version, but the ROM version. The current firmware is a 1.x release, even still.

The entirety of your complaint is you complaining about "bars" and real signal strength/speeds. The actual data behind the bars are related to both, but you don't seem to have any idea what the bars are. They represent the strength of your data radio if you're connected to data, 1XRTT if you're on a voice call.

That's pretty ironic, all things considered. I've provided some of the information you were looking for (how and why signal bars may be showing as lower than before with the new firmware), but instead you've posted even more links proving you don't know what you're talking about. Neither the touch control or radio firmware version numbers are even near 4.3. Feel free to keep digging your own hole, though.

Your link proves that you don't know how to actually post links on this forum; besides that, you ignore the posts OMJ's made in the radio threads discussing what kinds of firmware are available-- and yes, those are hboot, radio, and touch. Nice try though.
As I explained jack*** its the new firmware that came with the 4.3, you work so hard to be as much of a jack*** as you possibly can be. The links show the downloads for the new firmware. Try not being such an a** you act like your such a know it all, well you can get off the high horse you think your riding and you know what you can do with your attitude, where you can put it...
You've given it a valiant effort Rirere, bravo to you sir.
Mods should probably scrap this now since the op has decided to instigate a flamewar instead of reading the threads he is linking to as "support" for his statements.

If you are on a custom rom, try posting in that rom's thread, especially if signal is not displaying at all.

I know for a fact that the problem is software related I dont need anyone to tell me that.
His comments were off topic, he was trying to tell me that there is no firmware update that came out for 4.3 which is wrong. Excuse me for calling it 4.3 firmware when it has its own number I dont need anyone acting like that trying to tell me things that I know are true.
I did post on elegancia rom but they the main guys run the gsm version of htc one and do not do anything on the sprint side some other guys do so the sprint support is not as kept up as the gsm stuff is.
I was only trying to figure out what problems were fixed in the new firmware if there were and fixes in call signal accuracy or anything like that.
I just dont need anyone acting like they know everything trying to tell me I"am wrong.
Almost every 4.3 custom rom for the htc one says they recommend that you upgrade your firmware which that guy was trying to tell me there is no firmware upgrade for 4.3 which there is and I posted the links for it. I dont need anyone trying to tell me something that I"am wrong when I"am not and I proved it.

I said the main guys use gsm they have sprint guys that help out on the sprint support so the sprint support is not as quick to update as they have to contact the sprint guys on the sprint issues. Possible to change the H to 4g or 3g

Hi guys is it possible to change the data icon from h to 4g or 3g? thanks
Not sure why this is important to you, but in case you're wondering whether you're in 4G/3G, not that 'H' typically signifies 3G and 'LTE' signifies 4G in stock Android.

Why do you want to change it? There's already a 3g icon, used for 3g. I've seen all 3 icons pop up on my N6. Do you just want only the two icons to ever pop up, 3g and LTE?
EDIT: Either way, I think you might need a rom, or maybe a launcher + root could do it?

You must be a T-Mobile user if you want HSPA to display falsely as 4G :silly:
Here is how it was done on a Nexus 4. Since this is a developer's forum, take the plunge, try this on your Nexus 6, and report back. If you refuse to, then a developer's forum is the wrong place for you.

H, H+, and LTE?

Is there anyway to be able to tell when I am using H+ and not just H?

in aosp roms sometimes they will enable the H+ indicator. Xposed doesn't work right yet, only way i know right now is probably through a widget on the desktop or going to settings/status/cellular network type will show whether its hspa or hspa+
Mine says E,H,H+,LTE depending on where I am.

I'll take a screenshot the next time that I have H+ for you. I have LTE right now but I'm sure I can find an area with H+ relatively fast because I live in the middle of nowhere.
Here is the elusive H+ that I mentioned earlier.
It wont show in the statusbar anymore which is what i assume u would prefer. The dropdown and the status screen in settings is about it anymore.

I usually get LTE unless I take a call, then it will stay on H/H+ for a while before going back to LTE.
It doesn't stay on H+ for that long which is why it was hard to take a screenshot. It maybe stays for st most 10 seconds then drops to H before going back to LTE. When I had ATT it would stay on H+ for lo get periods of time.
Man, still not able to see H+. Only H and LTE... so weird.

op, H+ isnt enabled in stock. only a custom rom will enable H+ so that it can be seen in the status bar. otherwise, H means both H and H+.
So I'm not crazy, that guy was just wring lol. Thanks.

Its sad that this never occurred to me as the reason.(the holidays and finals have clearly made me forget things) As Simms22 said I'm using a custom ROM (liquid smooth) so that's why its there.

My first Android phone has ICS when I bought it but it was a Samsung so it showed 3g instead. I didn't know this was a ROM feature until now. Its good to learn new things.
