[Q] Trick AT&T - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright guys so reason why i opened this thread is because do to the fact that AT&T is nothing but a pure monopolistic (wants to control everything) company and as we are all aware there is no unlimited data plans, i have always wanted to know how to "Trick" if i may say, AT&T to thinking were using a so-called "Dumb Phone" thus vise versa a smartphone such as the good old Samsung captivate. I have read other threads about similar issues and achievements on using one dumb phone to activate there data and then switching there SIM to the smartphone but to be fully honest no one has posted steps or a how-to tutorial on how to do this precisely.
If you happen to be one of those that knows how to do this, can you be kind enough to share us your knowledge and post to us some happiness once and for all Thank you!!

unless you are willing to shell out 6-700 bucks for an inport/contract free smart phone, there is no way you can get away with that. your IMEI tells everything about your phone and they will know that you are using cappy.

And why exactly did you post this in the development section?
Just saying... there are some good threads going on here, and then you post this.

I have been using a captivate without a data plan for the past 7 months. I used it for 1 month with the data and then I called up AT&T and told that I was not satisfied with the phone and was going back to my old [non-smart] phone. They removed the data plan of my line. I used that phone for about 2 weeks. In those 2 weeks, I made sure the captivate had no means of connecting to the internet other than wifi (i.e. turn off data, remove apns, remove any and all mms apps). This has been working for me for a while now. It may work for you.

NM 10 char

My wife had a non-smart phone with a non-smartphone dataplan.
She then got a captivate from a source other than AT&T.
Move the sim card from the non-smartphone into the captivate, and it worked great.
The next morning, in came a text message from AT&T "Hope you are enjoying your new smartphone. You may not have known that you need a smartphone dataplan for that phone, so we have moved you over to the 2-gig smartphone dataplan".

Might need hacking IMEI?

Yeah there isn't any way for that cause my brother had a dumb phone and then put his at&t sim to n70 and after a month at&t texted him that he's gonna get charged for the data plan..
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App

did his n70 had changed imei to the dumb phone one's? to acheive this we need Dumb phone IMEI AND dumb phone user-agent, or just use the damn VPN.

idk but how do i get free money??
How is that even possible are you not supposed to connect to a network, doesn't a network charges you to connect to your phone? Its like saying,"How can I steal from the company so they cant find out im using their network?"
Why would you want free edge?
There is free wifi, and you didn't event tell us your carrier,
How do you have the G1 without edge anyway?
but for real, if we don't even know your company or country!
I want free money too.
oh and from the looks of the title and the question, i guess it would seem your age correspond with your number of posts

Owned. Anyways @ OP, stop creating threads with questions that should be self explanatory. Just turn the WiFi on and your g2g
Guys, keep in mind post count has nothing to do with intelligence. Please try to keep elitism out of the forum so people don't feel afraid to ask questions. This -is- the Q&A section after all.
i used to have free edge for about a year and a half. then i moved to a different city and my coverage sucked, so i called t-mobile about the lousy signal i had, then she reset the towers and after that, it was gone. i had to call back and start paying for it i do not know how this happend but it did, and everyone was jelous. mistake on sombodys part.
The OP is asking how to steal and pirate services from a carrier. They can expect to be ridiculed a bit.
No to quibble but he did not directly ask how to steal or pirate a connection. He asked if it was possible to get Edge for free on T-Mobile.
The answer is not legally as far as I know. There have been atempts at using cheaper internet services on the G1, such as T-Zones, but those have been systematically blocked over time.
It is definitely the intent of T-Mo US to require one of the G1 (now android) internet services for all users of the G1 on the T-Mo US network. Some have had some success with rooting the phone and skipping registration. They would be using the G1 without any internet service or MMS, relying on wifi alone. It seems like a crippled way to use the phone to me but it is what some do.
why would you want free edge if you can ask for free 3g?

[Q] Sprint HTC Hero CDMA (Hero200) On Verizon Service

In this thread, I would like to gather as much information as possible about transferring Verizon Wireless Service onto a Sprint Branded HTC Hero CDMA (Aka Hero200 & APA6277) with android 2.1 (codename Eclair).
I have already successfully 'rooted' the device....Now I just need a ROM. I cannot find any evidence that a ROM/PRL has been developed for this phone to support Verizon service(Although I believe some people have successfully ported cricket/boost/metroPCS to the Hero200).
I learned that the HTC Hero200 is pretty similar to the HTC Droid Eris, which supports Verizon, but the Eris firmware cannot be installed on the Hero without significant problems. Maybe someone knows of a workaround?
Perhaps we can break down exactly what is required to develop such software and implement the necessary provisioning data into this phone to support Verizon?
Can anyone please help point me in the right direction? Thank you!
even if you get it to work as in pick up their service there is no way they would allow you/ be able to active the phone.
Ok I'm kinda familiar with this as I'm new to sprint from cricket. The rom isn't important. Before you get to deep in to this I would recommend you either go to the Verizon website or call the customer support line and try to register the min on their network. If not then what you have to do MAY be illegal and I'm not sure if I can explain how to do it here. I know I can say what you need to do though. You're gonna have to get a Verizon phone and flash it's serial number to your hero. Remember, this is ONLY if they won't register the phone on their network. Try that first and report back what happens.

If I risk bricking the phone, it's cool... I'm more interested in learning about it, and I want to see if I can successfully transfer carriers.
I actually acquired this Hero200 through a 'friend of a friend' which was passed along as a gift, but I think the original owner lost the phone. I'm guessing they may have notified Sprint the device was 'lost/stolen', thus rendering the ESN number useless on Sprints network (But I'm not exactly sure how this works).
So if the ESN for this phone is 'tainted' or I guess 'blacklisted' on Sprint's network, this means I have to either program a new ESN onto this phone, or use a different carrier, right?

I believe you very likely could be right... But what are the exact components that make a phone worthy of activation on a network?
I would like to learn more about what constitutes a phones' "identity".
Surely there must be a way to alter the Hero200's ESN or other appropriate attributes to be interpreted by a carrier as a "valid" client.
Altering or tampering with a phones esn is also highly illegal

Sorry the auto correct put min instead of esn. The only thing your phone needs is the prl for text and voice to work. Data is a little more detailed but easily done. Yes it is illegal and if the phone was reported stolen or missing the only places you're going to get it working is a lower tiered service provider like metro pcs or cricket unless you swap the esn. Again it is illegal and I can't tell you how to do it without violating forum rules.

anyway...i am not sure it will work but i think is worth a try than getting into some illegal stuff....

how would you get the PRL? I am running a stock sprint 2.1 rom. Heard some people got it to run under a eris rom. I don't think that matters what Rom your using. i'm soo close.. I keep getting "We're unable to authenticate your phone at this time..." DO i just strip the PRL off the old phone? Isn't there an A-KEY that has to be delt with.?? i've seen lots of people get text and talk (all I need) but how are they getting past the A-KEY???
Is the PRL the answer to my mess?
I was actually looking to do just this, only the opposite. Buy a Verizon phone and activate it on Sprint's network. Altering ESNs is illegal, is it a different story if you rightfully own the ESNs that you are modifying? I had my EVO stolen so I'm stuck paying full price for another smartphone if I want one. I'd love to buy a phone, full retail price, from Verizon so that I legitimately own the device(and its ESN?), and swap its ESN with another Sprint phone which I legitimately own. I'm just unsure if this is allowed or still considered illegal. Can anyone provide insight?
I'm pretty sure this would require changing the ESN of the phone. If you own the phones and ESNs that are being altered/swapped and you aren't cheating the carrier out of any money(i.e. putting a Hero's ESN on an EVO so they don't charge you the $10 premium data charge because they think its a Hero, which would be theft of their services=ILLEGAL) is it still not allowed.
Changing the ESN is highly illegal, no matter if you own both devices. Look at it this way, the fact that you own 2 cars does not give you the right to exchange their VIN numbers. Identification numbers on products are not meant to be modified.
Please proceed carefully with the discussion of this thread. Continued talks about exchanging (cloning) ESN may end up getting this thread closed down.. Thanks.

I have ran into a similar problem like this with authentication problem.
Do you already have service?
Was "donor" phone you used your primary phone that was already activated?
What I did is activate another version phone the reactivated my modified fascinate and got a new a-key.

Okay so if I can get verizon to activate my htc hero's esn how can I flash the phone myself to Verizon first?
Or better yet how do I get to the menus to program the phone manually. I can get into the menus for the phone I want to replace and change the information accordingly if I can get to the programming menu on the htc hero. Its a sprint phone going to verizon.

2. As per older posts any procedures you take flashing a device is HIGHLY illegal. You're better off just getting a Verizon phone.

Hey I bought an Alltel Hero for the sole purpose of hacking (I'm going to change its ESN/MEID) but we're not gonna talk about that purpose directly..
Just answer this for me.. If I do what I plan to do, do I need to flash a new radio or will the Alltel radio that it already has already "tell" it to look for Verizon towers?

[Q] Bypass Data Plan

I've been using my Captivate for several months now. But i'm going to upgrade to a newer phone soon, probably during the summer. I'm going to pass my Captivate on to my little brother, who has no need for the data plan. It's been rooted and unlocked. I want to call AT&T and tell them that I have misplaced the phone and am now using my Sony Ericsson w810i, so I have no use for the Data Plan. Hopefully when my brother uses his sim, AT&T wont slap on another data plan charge to my already huge bill! I was wondering if someone can validate if this seems possible, or guide me to where I can find further info on this. I was also wondering is theres a way to change the IMEI# to my SE w810i IMEI#. Not really cheating them, since there will be no data usage and I actually do own the SE w810i =P
P.S.- An employee @ Best Buy told me that if I rooted and unlocked my Captivate, that I would be able to remove my data plan.
Thanks in advance!
from what i have heard, as long as the imei that is registered is not one from a smart phone then you should not have to worry about a data plan being added on. so if the sony is registered with att and then swap the sim into the captivate then you should be good. now that said, some one i know had a different phone registered under their account, then switched to a iphone and had the data plan put on their account. i guess as soon as att detects it they add it on even if a different imei is on the account. i know 3 other people that have the captivates and all have different imei under their accounts and none of them have a data plan. one of them even has an imei from one of those pay as you go phones from att which was like $10 or $20 and everything has been good.

Changing the IMEI is not legal so will not be supported on XDA.
As far as the rest. ATT does an IMEI sweep every now and then to update the system to make sure they have the right IMEI on the account. After a while (if you give the phone to your bro) he will get a text stating that his data plan doesnt match the device and they will change it over for you. Only way they can tell is if the IMEI is not in the system like a device from another carrier. I ran my old HD 2 without a data plan for almost a year and it came up as an old nokia device.
You will find no joy...
I gave my son my old Blackberry. Within two weeks, we both recieved a text saying his sim card was in a smart phone, and his account was being upgraded.
ATT does not care what you do, so long as you pay your dues.
Prior to this phone, I used a BB Pearl for over 2 years with no data.
Although I hear they automatically add data plans to smart phones now.
I appreciate all the replies! Thanks everyone... Just gotta cross my fingers and see how long it takes them to figure it out

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
something to consider is did you buy the cappy out right? or buy on a contract plan? if you bought on a contract you agreed to have a Data plan for a set # of years, they might let you sign a new contract or try to hold you to your older more profitable data plan.. even if you no longer have a data phone. depends on how evil they feel today.
one used to be able to just cancel the data plan after a month on new contract with ATT without getting charged extra or termination fee etc. Just be sure to not use any data, otherwise you'll be paying a hefty charge on any data usage.
I would think that as long as you continue with the data plan on the sony, AT&T shouldn't care what happens to the other phone unless you're trying to access data with it...to avoid that, as soon as you put the new sim in it, change the apn settings. Make sure the actual APN settings are deleted as well as ports...but you can leave the mms settings intact.

[Q] Make Captivate look dumb?

My wife likes her Captivate but never uses data capabilities. AT&T requires a data plan for any smartphone. Has anyone thought about making it emulate a dumb phone? Is it even possible? This would save me $15 a month by not using data. I would be willing to pay for instructions for such a mod.
This would be better in the q&a forum, not development.
No, you can't. Att uses the phones IMEI number to determine if data is needed.
Mod pm'd...
My wife is also on a captivate. She doesn't have a data plan. This is what I did. I backed up the efs folder on the external SD card and I also put a copy on my computer for safe keeping. Delete the efs folder on the sdcard. Then reboot the phone. You look at the imei number it will be a generic number. Hence non detectable by atts systems. She's had it for about six months and no data plan yet.

Do you mean that you want to use the phone as it is without the internet plan?
If yes, go to Settings >Wireless and networks > Mobile networks . uncheck the Use packet data box
Advantage in this method is that you can hop on a wifi network when it is available.
If you mean you want to fool AT&T network to recognize your captivate as a non-smartphone and continue to use the dataplan, I believe this forum doesn't allow such discussion.
Not that I know anything, but couldn't you wipe the phones EFS data and replace it with a "dumb phones" information?
Like I said I know nothing. I don't suggest you do this, or anything like it for that matter.
FWIW, I bought a Captivate on EBay (put Pinnacle on it), put my wife's SIM in it and she uses it without any requests from ATT to get a data plan...
If you want to make the phone look dumb, you could just paint/theme it to look like an iPhone.

It's not illegal to ask questions (which this is the wrong thread to do that by the way @ OP), and nobody has broken any laws its just web chat. Informing someone how to do something is not against the law, freedom of speech corrects that. I can tell you exactly what to do to rob a bank, but you won't be charged for robbing one until you do it. Talk of terroism, treason, or any communicative threat...now that is illegal.

Suppose I call AT&T to cancel her data plan and re-activate her old Motorola Razr, then take the SIM out of the Razr and put it in the Captivate? Could they still tell I was using a Captivate if I disable data on it?

[Q] Help: AT&T Wants to disconnect my Galaxy Note

I've had the galaxy note now for about 2 weeks on AT&T...Everything working really well...then:
I got a strange text today that said my phone does not match my data plan and service would be interrupted if I didnt call them.
I called AT&T and the rep said my IMEI matches a galaxy tab (ie. NOT a phone) and I cant keep my data plan. He said the only thing he could give me was a DATA ONLY PLAN and that I wouldnt be able to make calls!
What can I do? Did I just get a stupid rep?
Please help!
I love the Note, BTW and do NOT want to loose it!
EDIT: I did install the Samsung 2.3.6 OTA update about 4 days ago...in case that makes a difference
UPDATE:
I spoke to a different rep who went through all the same crap again. But after much wait time said that he opened a case number for support to address it and that it should be taken care of in 3 business days.
I do have my old unlimited data plan, so I wonder if that is causing the problem.
Just curious though are others having this issue on AT&T?
ATT does not give a **** about what you want. that's the problem. Do consider switching the hell away from them.

The galaxy note is a cross between a phone and a tab. That's probably why they want to kick you out of your plan and put you in a new one. The irony is that it's going to probably be making an appearance eventually. Try talking to a nother rep.

Let's guess - you are trying to use the dumbphone plan and got busted.
Usually this happens by:
1) Not using the dumbphone APN and using the smartphone/4g APN. (the dumbphone APN is the cingular 410 one in my FAQ)
2) Accidentally warning AT&T by telling the rep you have a smartphone, or asking for a 4g/smartphone sim card.
When either of the above happens, they generally block medianet to your phone and require you to get a smartphone.
You may be able to play dumb and say, 'oh, I didn't know I couldn't use that phone' then use a dumbphone till they reactivate your data. Then switch back.
But you'll need to figure out what you did wrong or you'll just get locked out in 2 weeks (or sooner) again.
Actually, I am guessing you are totally screwed - they apparently have the IMEI your note registered as a smartphone/tablet.
Even if they reactivate your data with another phone, as soon as you use your Note again, it's going to send its IMEI (which they now know about) and you'll get blocked again.
You're going to have to bite the bullet and get a regular smartphone data plan.
I have always thought it would be a matter of time before either:
1) AT&T starts looking up IMEI numbers differently so they recognize international smartphones. (it's shouldn't be that hard, to be honest)
2) They monitor data usage - dumbphones shouldn't be pulling massive amounts of data, although my friend with a featurephone says she can watch movies.

I'm not sure what the official data plan name is called, but I dont think it's a "dumbphone" plan...It's unlimited data & text, and I've used it for years, lastly for 18 months with the dell streak 5 without issue (well, without issues beyond the usual with AT&T!)
I hate the fact that the force you to have a data plan. I'm on tmo and they offer a pay as you need plan. Cost me zero bucks unless I need data. I also have mifi from Vzon if im not by a wifi spot. This works great for me and my family.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Go to an AT&T store, show them your phone & get a real smartphone plan.
I just got the same text and email today. I have had my phone for about 5 days now. I have the iPhone unlimited data plan. I'm wondering if it has to do with flash being on the note or maybe the h+ speeds I'm getting. Are there specific apn settings that I'm supposed to put in? I want to call them but I also don't want to give them my imei number. I paid to much for this phone not to be able to use it.

Funny, I also got this text/email from AT&T today. I opened a new thread at the Q&A forum. Didn't know there was a thread already.

I just received a text and email from AT&T today saying they disabled my data because they detected that I put my sim card into a data connect device. When I called to question them about it, they said their system detected my phone as the Samsung GT-P7501. I googled this model # and it's the new Germany version of the Samsung Tab 10.1. I really don't understand how or why their system detected this model. I don't think it's even possible to buy this tablet at the moment! Did any one else encounter a similar problem?
I was on the $10 unlimited data plan and used the wap.cingular APN setting.

This could be a huge problem.
They could be lumping the Galaxy Note with the Galaxy Tab 7.
I recall AT&T isn't allowing the Galaxy Tab 7 to receive phone calls, as they consider it a tablet even though it has a cellular antenna. They only offer a data plan for it.
If they try to pull the same stunt on the Galaxy note, this could be trouble.
This will have to be escalated somehow. Keep us informed.

That's your problem. I bet if you had a legit 4G smartphone plan, you would of never gotten a call from AT&T.

I have a Galaxy Note on an unlimited 4G plan using the 4G APN & I have yet to get a call from AT&T. I'm sorry but if the OP was using a MediaNet plan & used the wrong APN, its his fault & not AT&T.

I have the same problem and I NEVER used the 4G APN setting. I know better, I always use the wap.cingular APN setting. The strange thing is, they didn't detect it as a smartphone, they detected as a tablet from another country that was just released a couple of weeks ago?

Why would I be on a legit 4G plan when they shouldn't be able to detect it as a smartphone? This is part of the beauty of buying an international phone, AT&T can't detect (usually) what you're using so you can use the cheapest plan possible. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who does this. I been doing this since the original galaxy phone came out and never had a problem.

AT&T is getting smart & starting to crack down on ppl having an international phone & using a medianet plan. AT&T probably has people reading sites like this & know of the loophole.
So would it be better for us to go to an AT&T store or to just call customer service from our phone? I figured that if we went to the store then they could at least see that it's a phone and not a tablet.

Go to an AT&T store & have the rep see it's actually a phone & get a 4G smartphone plan. Don't deal with CS on the phone because they can't see the Note for themselves.
I brought my Note to an AT&T store & they initially asked me if it was a tablet. I told them, "nope, it's a phone". They said, cool & gave me a new sim card after I used my upgrade on an iP4s.

That depends on what kind of data plan you want to be on. Do you want to try to get the $10 unlimited non smartphone plan back (assuming you were on it) or just use the "smartphone data" plan? If you don't mind being on the 2gb smartphone data plan for $25, go to the store and show it to them.

Please reread the original post.
The issue is not 'you should be on a more expensive unlimited data plan'.
The issue is AT&T Is saying 'your device can't have voice. Just data.'
This is similar to this:

In the OP's case, I don't think he has an option.
AT&T's lookup system thinks the IMEI is a tablet that doesn't get phone service.
The only way for him to disprove that is to go into a store and show them the note and point out it's running Gingerbread, and therefore it is a phone not a tablet. Once they do that, they will allow voice again, but he'll have to use a smartphone plan after that.
