[Q] Phone undetectable in Kies - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

all right, I recently received my phone back from repair shop (screen was damaged) and I've left my original Samsung data cable at my mums place for her to charge her Nokia and I've ordered a new spare one from Amazon for £2.
When I try to connect to the PC, I can browse my folders and copy stuff to and fro from the phone, but the only problem is that Kies doesn't recognise my phone when connected in Kies mode. it says connected on the phone, and connecting in Kies, but never connects!.
I've reinstalled Kies, Samsung drivers, and even Windows Media Player! rebooted my laptop and phone number of times, and still I cannot connect. Also, from what I can remember, when I connected my phone to laptop, it would have installed USB MTP driver. now when I connect it, it doesn't install it. I don't have an USB MTP driver, but I've installed SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe drivers.
Is this cable fault or is Kies acting weird? I suspect its cable fault. What do you guys think? How do I connect my phone to Kies?

As far as I remember, Samsung requires you to use the original cable for use with Kies. I don't know how they detect ist, but they do check. I suspect this to be your problem.
Solution: Call your mum and ask for a cable exchange

Hi, thanks for your help. Can someone link me to a store which sells data cable that can detect phone in Kies?
thanks in advance.

anyone with any info on the cables?

re
hi there i had broplems with my phone and checked usb cable properties to get my phone working.
Noticed that nokia usb cable aint using pin 4 or 5 so you shuold get a cable with every pin in use.

err.. what? that didn't even make sense to me.
I was asking if anyone knew any online retailer who could sell me galaxy s cable so that it could be used with kies?

surely someone knows where to buy an original cable!

USB Connection

Hey there
My phone has been connecting perfectly fine since I got it about a year ago right up to a couple of days ago.
I've just changed my contract and wanted to unlock the phone. However, before I could even go about doing I discovered that my computer (Vista 32bit) was no longer recognising the phone.
When I plug it in it does charge but the computer gives no reaction. Even when I put the Kaiser into bootloader it still says Serial instead of USB.
I have tried disabling enhanced network functionalities on the phone, I have reinstalled Windows Mobile Device Center, I have hard reset the Kaiser, I have used multiple USB cables and multiple USB ports (all of which work with other devices).
As a result of the hard reset I have now lost the majority of my data. It's all backed up on my computer but this isn't much use when it refuses to recognise the phone!
What can I do to fix this?
Any help would be very gratefully accepted!
Cheers
McAsh
I would try it on a friends XP machine or a friends Vista machine. Try to narrow down if it is the phone or your PC , and then proceed from there.
HI!
I have the same right problem!
The only way i can do activesync is connecting the phone in activesync by bluetooth and the sincronization is fine, but i need to put HardSPL in it and i need that it can be recognized by USB connection and my Kaiser is only charging from USB, it is not being detected by the computer.
PLEASE HELP!!!
Thanks!
had same problem
no one help, I started a thread and no replies
till today I plugged my kaiser to usb and computer recognized and synced
I was using bluetooth to sync for a couple of months
I really didn't do anything to fix this first I thought it was usb connection but it wasn't because I was able to put new rom thru the usb so connetctoin was there when the phone is in the hard reset mode. WEIRD ha
mostly these things comes down to 3 reasons
1. defect usb connector in the ppc
2. corrupt activesync install full uninstall and clearing registry of the pc should fix that
3. issue with usb port chipset drivers for on the pc
Also having a similar problem.
My computer recognizes my Kaiser as "HTC USB Sync" in the Device manager but nothing more happends. Could it yet be the phone USB connector that is broken? Also I was able to flash the rom yesterday (from bootloader).
When plugged in, my phone totally freezes and becomes available again the moment I unplug it and by then starts "connecting to host".
If I uncheck the "allow usb connections" box in WMDC the phone is workable but very juddery.
Have tried to completely uninstall WMDC and reinstall it again with no success whatsoever.
Any tips or is my only solution to buy a bluetooth-dongle?
The solution for mine is really the repair center unfortunately!
It really seems to be a hardware problem in the USB connector, i can't even change a firmware, the pda simple isn't recognized by the computer :S
Anyway thanks for the help!
Regards!
I am also having the same problem!! My question is how do you use bluetooth to sync with the activesync(not too computer saavy!!)
Check the usb connection on the phone. It may have a contact pushed over or broken
I got the same sympton.
I can get my phone to sync by pushing the USB connector harder towards the phone. Yes, it is connected already, and it is not lose, and the PC recognise it as HTC device in Device Manager, but it is just not detected by the (Vista) Windows Mobile Device Center
If I keep pushing the usb connector in (towards the phone), then it would get detected and start syncing. If I relax my hand and stop pushing, the active sync connection will drop immediately (still detected as HTC USB device in Device manager though).
Therefore, I have to keep pushing it in to have a successful sync. I don't dare to flash the firmware anymore... :-(
P.S. I am using the official O2 WM6.1 firmware, and using the original USB sync cable. I noticed that the original USB cable's connector head is a bit longer than ALL my other USB cable's connector head (the mini USB head).
Originally I didn't need to do the push in for the phone to get recongised, so I figure it is some sort of wear and tear on the phone's connector... :-( This does put me off in purchasing another HTC phone, because the new one is likely to suffer from the same wear and tear...
btw, before the connector got that bad, when it was connected but not synchronising, I could get it to sync just by launching Windows mobile device center (which is a different program than sync center in vista); and of course, when it was all brand new, I just need to connect the phone to the PC via the USB cable, and everything happened automatically...
I am trying to flash my first rom and the computer would not detect the phone. Took a look at the female mini USB socket on the phone and the 3rd pin out of 5 was much lower. Took a tiny screw driver and pushed it up and I got success. Its a little sensitive but if you dont touch the phone it will work fine.
Good luck
Jason
HI gdarrenc!
The way to sync it via Bluetooth is when you open the activesync in your pda, in the options menu you have the option to sync via bluetooth
Regards!
possible solution if feeling brave
My hotsync failed a few days ago, did the usual searches and posting on here with no joy and then did a google search for a picture of the mini usbport.
on inspection of mine in comparison i noticed the two leftmost pins were down to the point they were in the sticky out black bit so with a pair of my wifes best precision tweazers i flexed the black bit down slightly and slid the tweazers to the right lifting them up slightly. as soon as retested it is now working again.
NOTE BE VERY VERY GENTLE WHEN DOING THIS - DO NOT USE ANY FORCE
my guess is this is due to an ill fitting usb cable as mine had a certain degree of up and down flex when connected.
hope this helps someone.
I am also having issues with pc-htc connection.
But, this happened when I pulled the usb out of the phone with my leg.
Now, I squezzed usb head a little, and it works fine.

[Q] USB Connection Issues

I have an issue with my PC not recognizing my Captivate. When I plug in the USB cable to my PC, I can choose to activate USB mode and it prompts me to mount the drive, I say yes but nothing shows up in My Computer. I was able to do all this fine just a few days ago.
I have uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers. I installed Samsung Kies and it doesn't recognize the phone. I tried my phone on another PC and it won't show up there either. I've factory wiped the phone twice now.
Is it a problem with the phone or is there something I can do to get this to work?
I'm having the same issue. Did you get this resolved & if so, how? Tried both ports on my MB Pro & work PC...tried Samsung cable & another USB cable. Debugging is on.
Try Settings -> Applications -> USB Settings -> (select) Mass Storage
I found that when my captivate was set to Kies my computer wouldn't pick it up.
Mine was set to ask on connection. Tried mass storage mode (debugging off) & no dice. Back to ask on connection with debugging on, and still nothing. I've tried all 3 USB ports on my work laptop and both on the MB Pro. Any other ideas?
Did u try enabling "debug mode" and seeing if the PC recognizes it.
The main issue is usually your USB cable. I had the same issue. You need to find an OEM mini usb cable for it to work properly. The one that came with my phone works fine, but when i went to ATT and bought one for my work, it only lets you charge the phone and does not put your phone into USB connection mode.

The ones from MonoPrice work for me and they were like $1.50
Diablo: Been in debugging mode most of the time trying to get it to work. Main issue is getting my personal MB Pro to recognize, so I won't be able to check/tinker much until after work tonight.
cajuntigerbait: I've been using the provided Samsung cable – tried a work Blackberry cable (works fine with my work BB) to no avail as well.
Will update tonight. Any tried & true methods for cleaning the phone port while I'm at it? Thanks for the quick responses, everyone

Thanks, will check the site & order a few when I get a chance. Couldn't hurt to have a couple spares, right?

[Q] Problems with Captivate + USB connection

Okay, I'm boggled at this problem. I'll provide all the details and maybe someone much more saavy than I can clear this up or provide a solution:
- Purchased new samsung captivate unlocked from amazon
- Phone is running stock 2.2 Froyo (I factory reset it once, from privacy options)
- Phone has no SIM card in yet.
Problem:
Phone does not connect to any computer or USB port by the provided USB cable
Troubleshooting:
- I have tried to connect the new phone using the provided cable and it only recharges. There is no sound or indication on the PC of detecting the phone. Only a beep on the phone indicating it is charging.
- I have tried every USB port (front and back) of 4 different PCs. 2 laptops, 2 desktops. Including trying USB ports with no other USB peripherals attached. (PCs were windows 7 64 bit PCs)
- The only success I have had - was when I tried it on a powered USB hub connected to a laptop, the computer detected a Samsung android device. It worked for 2-3 reconnect/ejects. Then was never able to repeat this success on any combination of USB hub + PC (laptop or desktop)
- I have tried a samsung stratosphere on the provided captivate USB cable, the Stratosphere usb cable and my Nook USB cable. It worked on all 3.
- The Captivate failed on all 3 (only charged, no USB to PC connection).
- I have tried debug mode on, debug mode off, mass storage mode, kies mode (with kies installed/uninstalled). Drivers installed, then uninstalled. Still only charges, the PC does not detect any device connected.
Conclusions:
- The USB port on the phone is faulty (then I would return it to amazon), this phone is 1 week old.
What I find odd is how it worked for 2-3 connections on a powered USB hub on one laptop.
- The 3 USB data cables I tried were all not "good enough" for the captivate but work fine for the stratosphere and for my nook. (Then I'd find a good enough cable)
- The phone currently does not have a SIM card. (not sure if that is somehow related).
I will probably return the phone at this rate, but would like to know if this is a common problem with Captivate with no common solution.
Side Question:
My ultimate goal through all this, is to root the phone so I can tether to it wirelessly. I obviously can't tether through USB since I am unable to make a data connection through the USB port.
If there is someway I can tether wirelessly without rooting the phone then I may be able to live without using a USB data cable.
Thanks for reading and any replies!
For ur connections issues, have u checked out this thread --- Captivate Connection Issues and Download Mode Help ??
But u may have a port problem... U can get USB Port repair done by a good trust worthy guy here... Samsung Captivate USB Port Repair
And as far as the wireless tethering, u can do it without being rooted, but it will cost u of course. That is, u will have to pay for the tethering plan.
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking along a similar route that the data pins on the USB port were no good.
Seeing that the phone is only 1 week old I will probably return it and either get a new one or different model.
You wouldn't happen to know if this is a common issue with the Captivate? so I should avoid it in the future?
^ Speakin from my experience and what I've read over the past year and a half or so, it is not a common problem.
The Captivate was a great phone in it's day. But these days u have a wide choice of other more up to date phones.
The SGS II is my main daily phone now and my Captivate is my work cell.
Don't get me wrong though, the Captivate is still a great phone.

[Q] Defective Note?

I bought a new N7000 and everything works fine except I can't get it to connect via usb. Kies won't connect to the phone but everything else works fine with it. I can transfer via wifi with Kies.
The charger that came with it also wouldn't work, so I got my G2X usb cord and wall adapter and it charges that way, otherwise, the computer won't recognize it.
After rooting it Windows 7 finally installed the drivers for it, and the computer showed it was charging (still no usb storage though) and once I unplugged it and plugged it back in again no response.
Tried mounting usb storage through CWM and still nothing. I would think if there was something wrong with the charging port that it wouldn't work at all, but I can charge via a/c adapter. Confused.
A good test for this may be to try the Android SDK to try and get an adb connection. The reason I say this is it bypasses the samsung usb drivers and uses a generic set. If you can get an adb connection and pass a few basic commands then you'll know it's not hardware issue.
There are a few possibilities for this error...
1. MTP service is not starting correctly on the device which would suggest needing a rom reflash or factory reset. Using the Android sdk connection will help determine this
2. MTP not starting correctly at pc, suggesting driver installation/corrupt download of samsung drivers, again android sdk will help determine this
3. Usb port of pc issue. On my rig, connection usually fails off front ports, but rear ones work fine.
4. Cabling, does sound like the cable/charger that was supplied may be faulty.
5. And finally, the hardware usb on device is faulty.
How were you able to root.?

Once in download mode Oding would recognize the device. Other than that, the computer never will.

PC does not recognise phone [device descriptor request failed]

So the story is that i got a samsung galaxy note 5 (n920i) with a broken screen from my sister and it worked fine before. A year later i fixed the phone and wiped the files, cache and stuff i noticed that it did not charge with my aftermarket charging cable (battery was at 0%). I thought the cable was screwed so i used an official samsung one and it started charging. once it started up i did all the startup installation process and such but then i noticed that it would not use fast charge (i have an official samsung fast charge socket) even with the fast charge setting on. so i thought to plug it into my pc but it does not recognise it at all. (device descriptor request failed every time) I used many different ports on my pc and laptop, used many aftermarket and official charging cables, i even used it on devices like the gear vr and a docking station and they dont recognise it either.
I found a post saying to push up the tongue in the charging port which did not fix it, i tried all such drivers and fixes thinking its my pc and/or laptop but no luck, like i said i even used devices like docking station and gear vr and both dont recognise it either. So i just thought it may be the charging port its self and purchased a new one to install(i also got a new battery just incase) . After replacing both the charging dock and the battery successfully it still does not work on my pc nor does it charge properly. it is running on the newest update out right now.
edit: I also lost the little white signal cable for the antenna while replacing charge port but i have purchased a new one and its on the way. (if that causes an issue)
I have tried using samsung kies and smart switch with drivers and it does not recognise it either
I dont know what else to do can someone help me figure it out whats wrong.
Thanks
I have the same problem.
Is there any way to root note 5 n920v without pc?
My phone have a problem that does not connect to pc with usb cable, my last hope is to try to install a new firmware.
By research, i think its a software problem.
