I did a search and found a tutorial by JesusFreke on how to register without a data plan.
However, I have a question.
My sister has a G1 currently running CM 5.0.8
Doesn't CM have an option during registration to switch to wifi? I need this verified before I try. I really dont want to mess with ADB.
Thanks!
im not sure about that specific rom.. but most roms on xda do have the option to choose wifi or even to skip the google sign in so you can turn wifi on after the actual setup... if the device is already rooted you can just keep trying different roms untill you find one with the option to skip the sign in or at least with the wifi option in beggining setup.. if the device is not rooted than you may have trouble flashing roms lol because you cant.. this link has some advice on rooting with or without data plan..

i did a system wipe on my G1, but i can't get a wifi, so when it's verifying my e-mail, it won't work! also, I don't have edge, so don't tell me to buy it to solve that problem.
Well, if your on a cupcake rom, you could always try saying skip logging in? Or follow the guide to login without a google account in the dev section.
how do you get the cupcake rom?
what kind of wipe did you do? Recovery wipe, or a restore default settings? Are you rooted?
right now, im deciding if i should root, and i can do it for my g1 (my build number is crc1), and as you can see, im a real noob. really, its not frozen at this minute, just every-time i turn it on and off, applying a system wipe.
do root, and install the latest cyangon rom under dream android developement subforum. From there you should be able to install that. and skip the part where it asks you to sign in. Or borrow a sim card from someone who has a g1 plan. Read the tutorials on rooting.
Thank you!
Hi I am new to this and I need a step by step guide for unlocking, rooting and putting a Cyanogen Rom on my Nexus one from a Mac. I tried today and only finished to the rooting part and got to Superuser Permission and when I tap on it it's a blank screen. I supposed I have not finished that particular part and I want to add cyanogen rom to it, but I need help on how to do it step by step. I used to have an iphone and could do the same thing to almost with my eyes closed. Just trying to get used to the Android system. Also any rooted apps recommended after I complete the whole process? and any way to improve the battery life, music EQ, hacked Apps (Preferably free lol), etc. I am also wondering if there is a way to send pics text messages without having a data plan from tmobile. They told me at tmobile you have to have a data plan and I am assuming that has to be BS? I did it with my iphone. I know there has to be a way. So if anyone has any answers or suggestions I'd appreciate it thnx.

(First, the order of steps)
I did:
1) Unlock bootloader
2) Flash recovery image (I personally use Amon_RA's v1.7 in the dev forum) via fastboot
3) Flash superboot for my version (mine was ERE27 I believe)
4) Boot into system.
5) Reboot into recovery
6) Flash rom of choice (e.g. CM or Modaco). Wipe if need be.
I did #4 to make sure I actually had root and a working system, it's probably possible to skip it but it was a nice sanity check for me. There are guides across here that will detail the individual steps. No radio was flashed until I knew what I was doing with abd. I picked up the superboot image over at modaco. If you want to see this as a video, theunlockr has a youtube video and guide up on their site (first or second google result).
(Second, TMo's data plan)
My android service is data + unlimited txt combined in a single line item. I'm not sure if they are separate in newer plans (my base plan is close to 7 years old now...). Txts have been MMS/TXT interchangeable for years now so your bucket is the same. If you somehow get stuck with a plan that is data without txts, then you could resort to email or google's SMS/IM sending through Gchat or whatever their service is. Call 611 and ask though, mine's just a single (inseparable) line item.
Thnx I'm going to try this ASAP anything comes up I'll let you know
Ok so I got my hero about a month ago and upgraded to 2.1 last week. Terrible decision...wish I could take it back...but I hear that if you root your phone and use a custom ROM you can actually have a pretty decent experience with your phone using 2.1 I can't even list how many problems and how slow 2.1 is.
I do not know a lot at all about rooting a phone, I never have before, and the tutorials on unlocker seem to be out-dated with the 1.5 software so nothing is working for me. I have the ADP setup on my computer, I'm just wondering what's the easiest and most up to date way to root my Sprint HTC Hero so I can use a custom ROM. Any help is appreciated, thank you.
**If your software/build number (2.27.651.X) ends in 6, you must download and run this RUU first to be able to use the root exploit on your phone. If it ends in .5, skip this and click the link in the next sentence.**
Try this and if you follow it correctly, you'll be able to root your phone and be able to nandroid, and flash custom roms and what not.
Final note, all of the user data/settings on your phone will be reset, so it will be like having a brand new phone out of the box. Just an FYI.
Thank you I have successfully rooted my phone...but I'm having trouble connecting to the internet now. I cannot receive any weather data and have no internet connection at all.
I"m having the same problem, even after I set back to factory default. Not sure what I did wrong.

What problem(s) are you having in particular? Not being able to root?
I have this hero and want to use it on the Cricket network. Here is what I have done: Only Rom that will install every time is the Fresh Rom 2.1.2. But I can not get the data to work on it. Web browsing and calls and sms work. not data. So the weather wont update or can't use apps that use data like Gmail or facebook. My work around is visit those sites on the browser. BTW on wifi everything works fine. I can't get the Bittersweet or damagecontrol roms to install. they hang on the boot screen. I have followed the Cricket setup I found on Howardforums. still no data.
Hate to be that guy, but this should be in Q/A.
Also, are you wiping before flashing? Or just flashing everything over top of everything installed?
As I am not on Sprint, something I do every time just to verify my stuff works right, I call my carriers activation line every that I flash a new ROM.
There are a lot of Good roms. I use Darchroid.
You need to flash the Cricket eris.zip to get everything working after flashing a custom rom. Never mind the name just flash it.

Make sure all of your EPST settings are correct in QPST or whatever you use.
Enjoy full web, and all apps.
Sorry another noob just joined the forum.
I have been researching periodically for about a month now and jumped in last week and attempted to root my phone. I believe that I rooted it after upgrading to 2.27.651.5. I could not successfully flash the recovery.img.
The program that pops up on the phone gave me an error message. Should I root the phone again from the beginning?
After this is successful all I have to do is load a ROM onto the phone and I will be set am I right? As of right now my rooted? phone is having problems connecting to the mobile network and I can only connect to the WiFi networks to get internet.
Sorry for being such a noob. I have tried searching and researching but the terms used are unintentionally geared towards people who know about this stuff unlike me.
Thanks for any help.
Just want to say you have an awesome username lol. Hopefully someone can help you out
If your phone was successfully rooted then yes all you would have to do is load a ROM and you'd be all set but it seems like your phone didn't get rooted. When you root a phone correctly it won't interfere with anything already on the phone, it will just add functionality. When I rooted my hero I had to drop from the .6 build to the .5 and after I rooted it my gps and such didn't work so it might have been the build I downloaded onto the phone or the rooting process I used was wrong. I would try to wait until a dev puts together a guide on how to root the .6 build(the latest Android 2.1 build) and then root it. I have some experience with rooting so ill keep looking for a .5 build that works properly after being rooted and if I find one ill let you know what to do and all that fun stuff. And you do have a pretty awesome user name if you have any other questions email me at [email protected]
