[Q] can't boot - stuck on htc screen - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i was hoping maybe someone could help me with the fact that i can't boot up past the htc screen. i did a search, but couldn't find anything that worked. anyway, i haven't changed anything on my phone - same rom and all - but it was getting laggy lately, and so i thought i would clear the data and dalvik and all that. i figured i'd do a backup first - using RA 1.6.2 it said "performing backup" and the dots kept filling the page, but 15 minutes later it wasn't done so i pulled the battery. now i can't boot the phone (which i find weird since i didn't pull the battery during a restore or anything, so it shouldn't have messed with any files). i did give it over an hour to boot up btw, in case it just needed time to rebuild. tried a backup again (figuring the one i stopped would be corrupt, and thought maybe the phone thought it was still backing up and wanted a complete nandroid to be done?) and it said run via adb. so, i tried flashing clockwork 2.5.0.7 and it looked like it was working at first, but then it just got stuck on "sysinit." i wiped everything and formatted the sd card in case something was corrupt, but still no luck. i realize i COULD reinstall a rom (i'm using aosp froyo) but i'd prefer not to only because i don't have a backup and i'd rather not lose my texts and voicemails if i don't have to.
hopefully i provided enough information. and the battery is fully charged btw. thanks for any help you could provide

That run via ADB message pops up when the battery is below 30%. At this point don't worry about saving the ROM you have right now, all the text messages and voicemails are erased when you do all the wipes. Download a new ROM, put it on the SD card, Wipe everything and flash.
In the future, if you port your number to google voice all your texts and voicemails will be accessible from any computer or new phone no matter what you do.

Please Help

Last night I power cycled my phone and put it on my charger. When I woke up this morning and looked at my phone there were a ton of force close screens. I have no phone (cannot make calls) and not data.
I power cycled the phone over and over and have been searching the net all day but cannot get it to work. The only thing that I had done prior to the initial power cycle was a few updates from the market, so I uninstalled those apps, but it appears that was not the problem.
I have root access and was running gumbo's rom (now MaDoCo...thought that would help) and I really don't wanna do a factory reset. Is there anything I can do?
Factory reset is most likely gonna be your only option. If you dont wanna do that, do you still have the .zip for your rom on your mem card? If so, why not just reflash the zip? Might take care of the issue without having to do a hard reset. I am assumingm, though, that if you are rooted you would have created a nandroid backup? Why not just restore?
Tried reflashing the rom and that didn't work. Gonna do a Factory reset now. Lets see
tried factory reset and now i'm stuck on boot screen
Did you ever make a Nandroid backup?? I would suggest you run the Sprint RUU and bring your phone back to Stock, reroot, install recovery, and then a custom ROM. That looks like your best option.
But, just for the hell of it -- take out of your battery and then insert it back in and reboot, see if that does anything.
What kind of factory reset did you do? Wipe from recovery, go through setting, the home>back>power one, or what? And are you stuck at the HTC screen? That happened to me once, but it was because I flashed a GSM rom my first try. Boot into recovery, wipe the phone, and if that doenst do it, I agree with pseodo, time to RUU.
Well I tried resetting from the recovery and wiping, but it will not boot up. Then I tried the RUU, but it wont get past the boot screen in order for me to to connect it to the USB. I tried connecting the USB through recovery and although I can access my SD card via my PC, going through the steps for the RUU says its not connected.
I took my phone over to sprint and although they know I have a custom rom on there (which voided my warranty), they are still gonna give me a brand new one and send mine back through manufacture warranty. It'll be in on Tuesday. Luckily for me I have an online back up through by MyBackUpPro, so I should be good on restoring settings, apps, contacts and all other important stuff. (Minus Root and Custom Rom )
Thanks for all the suggestions, I appreciate it.
I flashed a new set of icons last week and had a bunch of force closes, restored a nandroid and everything was fine.

did i brick my hero? never ending boot up loop

i have been running damagecontrol 2.0.8 and over the last few days had some weird forced closes and then last night my sense clock and stuff dissapeared. When trying to go into settings - > application management it would force close also. So i downloaded the damagecontrol rom again, put on my SD, went into recovery and wiped everything. For some dumb reason i also wiped the SD card.
so i put the rom back on SD, and flashed. nope, i didnt nandroid after deleted it. OOPS! and of course im an idiot and didnt ever copy my nandroid to PC
so anyways, i have flashed the rom a few times now and im stuck in a never ending HTC/Sprint boot up loop. I've tried everything I can think of and nothing will boot the phone.
Any ideas or am i screwed?
Nope youre bricked......
ok so do this:
Make sure you wipe everything, sd card included (0 for ext, 0 for swap, all for FAT)
The copy the rom back to the phone and flash again...
Worst case is to run the RUU1.56.
Oh yeah post this in general next time.
Mods will probably move it - if so thats where your thread went.
lol your NOT bricked. Bricked means no way to recover. If you can still get to your recovery screen your fine. Like the last post says boot to recovery go to the wipe screen and wipe every category Data / sd extension / other ones arent really necessary. Pick a ROM put it on your card flash and enjoy. oh then MAKE A BACKUP!

Forgot my <Sarcasm> </Sarcasm> tags again
power off, remove your sd card, and power on.
You most likely have something screwy in your ext partition.
Had this same issue...
I wiped everything (factory reset, davlik cache, etc)...flashed the ROM again. Had no luck. My phone came back for about 2 minutes...and was running insanely slow and freezing up after every button press. Tried running a nanoid restore...with no avail. I ended up getting my phone replaced with a reconditioned model. And it actually feels better than the new one I was using, lol.
I don't know what peoples problems with a reconditioned piece of equipment is. If I have the option to buy refurb at a store I do - simply put: A company cannot afford to test EVERY thing that is spit of the production line, they grab every say 100th one.
IN THEORY:
Each and EVERY refurb is tested and inspected, so its really almost garunteed that you will get a better product. Unless of course the QA person is a moron/lazy - which actually maybe the case with refurb heros...have seen a few horror stories.
I had something like this happen too. It would get stuck on the boot screen in a loop. I was able to get into recovery, but it could not read the SD card at all. I had to format the SD card and flash a new rom. I'm wondrering if it's because I dropped the phone and that cause the SD card data to be corrupted.

[Q] CW Nandroid backup hangs on android_secure

Hi all,
I just installed ClockworkMod Recover using ROM Manager on my G1, replacing Amon_RA. Immediately before replacing, I did a Nandroid backup using Amon_RA. No problems, lots of dots and then it returned. After I installed ClockworkMod, I tried creating another Nandroid backup, first from the recovery screen and then from the ROM Manager app. Both times the backup hung on the message "Backing up .android_secure..." and required a battery pull to get back. The last time I let it go for over an hour before giving up. I'm running CM6 stable, if that matters.
Any idea? I'm about to put Amon_RA back on, so I can get good Nandroid backups again.
I know this is an old post but I am getting the same thing. Going to continue researching.
hmmm last time i had an issue kinda like this it was the recovery... need to re flash it somehow.. maybe the sd ext has something to do with it also...? im not sure but i would try to re flash recovery or maybe switch back to amon-ra if all else fails can always re-root
Mine took over 20 minutes today. Just when I was about to pull the battery, it moved on. Probably down the amount of stuff you have on your phone I guess.
I'm running a 32GB card stuffed with apps
havent used clockworkmod in a long time, i stick with amonra -- but if i remember right with clockwork isnt there an option to have a status bar so you can see how things are moving along? maybe not...

[Q] phone stuck in boot screen, HELP!

i had network problems (3g stopped working, don't know why), and had an old version of doc's. so i figured i'd install the new version after a wipe, see if that'd fix it.
just to be safe, i went in recovery (clockwork) and restored an earlier backup. it worked, but still no internet. upon remembering that this was the backup i made just after installing docs, i went back to my previous backup, stock rom, i think 2.1.
this is where stuff went wrong. i hadn't disabled the lagfix (forgot which one, i remember i had ext4 as filesystem), and now, no matter what i do, my phone won't go past the boot screen. big lettering galaxy s, smaller gt-i9000 and at the bottom samsung, you know the one.
i tried everything i could imagine. wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, re-restore to the oldest backup. only then did i remember the lagfix and remove it. retried all of those, still no dice.
i can get into recovery mode, both clockwork and 2e, and i can get into download mode.
when i connect my phone to my pc, it doesn't notice. when selecting mount in clockwork, it mounts, and shows the two drives in my computer, but when i try to open one of the drives, i get nothing.
i installed docs rom a while back, and have wiped my pc since then, so i have no files from that. i have installed the android sdk, but don't know how to use it, let alone how to use it with a phone that doesn't show.
all i want is to get back to stock, for now. try again from there.
can i? or have i ruined my phone?
edit:
wow... take about relief.
i used odin to flash xxjpu, 2.2.1, and it seems to have worked!
in case anyone else is stuck on a boot screen, download mode with odin means you're safe.
anyone with more sense than i showed in my stupidity, sorry for adding another semi useless topic.

clockworkmod restore boot loop?

hey everyone, i'm new here. Sorry if this has been posted before, but i'm having a bit of a problem right now.. I rooted my CDMA hero last night. I made a nandroid backup of my phone before i flashed any roms. I flashed a rom and did something wrong, so i tried to restore my nandroid backup... and i got stuck at the "htc - quietly brilliant" screen. i then found out i'm supposed to wipe all data, so i did, and flashed the nandroid backup again.. same problem. so i flashed a different ROM and it loaded up.. so, again, i wiped all data and tried to restore my stock ROM (google didn't back up contacts when it said they were, so i'm trying to restore to get them back)... and i'm STILL getting the quietly brilliant screen. Any help? Thanks!
When you restore - it does take a while to boot up. How much time did you wait on the white screen? Also, did you get any errors during the nand restore?
no, no errors.. and i waited a pretty long time. Enough to allow the "Quietly Brilliant" screen to flash black, then come back up a few times... i'll do another nandroid restore though and watch for errors. But when i did it before, I didn't see any.
this can happen if you don't have enough space on your sd card during the backup. it has been my experience that nand will not give you an error when it runs out of space, everything appears to have completed as it should, but when you go to restore not everything is there, thus causing the phone not to boot.
also as someone else stated the first boot after a wipe can take a very very long time. 10-15+ mins. (this is not always the case)
my advice (for what it is worth) try a full wipe, and load a new rom. another thing to consider is that most (should be all) roms do not come with gapps built in. once you flash the new rom, before you try and boot it, you should also flash gapps. for instance aospCMod will not load without it.
my sd card actually got messed up before all of this (pulled the battery out when phone froze) so i reformatted it.. it was almost completely empty when I did the backup. It's an 8gb card, too.
yeah i'm actually using a version of aosp, and i installed gapps. i'm currently running it now, but i lost all of my contacts (100+... haha)
I'll charge the phone up, restore and let it be for 10-15 mins like you suggested, when I get home later today. Thanks everyone so much for the help.

Are you using Firerat mod? That happens when the partition is too small.
