did i brick my hero? never ending boot up loop - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have been running damagecontrol 2.0.8 and over the last few days had some weird forced closes and then last night my sense clock and stuff dissapeared. When trying to go into settings - > application management it would force close also. So i downloaded the damagecontrol rom again, put on my SD, went into recovery and wiped everything. For some dumb reason i also wiped the SD card.
so i put the rom back on SD, and flashed. nope, i didnt nandroid after deleted it. OOPS! and of course im an idiot and didnt ever copy my nandroid to PC
so anyways, i have flashed the rom a few times now and im stuck in a never ending HTC/Sprint boot up loop. I've tried everything I can think of and nothing will boot the phone.
Any ideas or am i screwed?

Nope youre bricked......
ok so do this:
Make sure you wipe everything, sd card included (0 for ext, 0 for swap, all for FAT)
The copy the rom back to the phone and flash again...
Worst case is to run the RUU1.56.
Oh yeah post this in general next time.
Mods will probably move it - if so thats where your thread went.

lol your NOT bricked. Bricked means no way to recover. If you can still get to your recovery screen your fine. Like the last post says boot to recovery go to the wipe screen and wipe every category Data / sd extension / other ones arent really necessary. Pick a ROM put it on your card flash and enjoy. oh then MAKE A BACKUP!

Forgot my <Sarcasm> </Sarcasm> tags again

power off, remove your sd card, and power on.
You most likely have something screwy in your ext partition.

Had this same issue...
I wiped everything (factory reset, davlik cache, etc)...flashed the ROM again. Had no luck. My phone came back for about 2 minutes...and was running insanely slow and freezing up after every button press. Tried running a nanoid restore...with no avail. I ended up getting my phone replaced with a reconditioned model. And it actually feels better than the new one I was using, lol.

I don't know what peoples problems with a reconditioned piece of equipment is. If I have the option to buy refurb at a store I do - simply put: A company cannot afford to test EVERY thing that is spit of the production line, they grab every say 100th one.
IN THEORY:
Each and EVERY refurb is tested and inspected, so its really almost garunteed that you will get a better product. Unless of course the QA person is a moron/lazy - which actually maybe the case with refurb heros...have seen a few horror stories.

I had something like this happen too. It would get stuck on the boot screen in a loop. I was able to get into recovery, but it could not read the SD card at all. I had to format the SD card and flash a new rom. I'm wondrering if it's because I dropped the phone and that cause the SD card data to be corrupted.

Looping at Start-up

so my SD card has been messing up and not letting me save apps to it and i had to reformat it. after I wiped it and reformated it i rebooted my phone and now it wont go passed the ANDROID screen and it just keeps looping. i have the old CM 1.4 and dont know how to get my phone to move passed this screen and use my phone again. I don't know the answer to your question, however...
I am friendly, and I am going to kindly inform you that this is the wrong section and you will get flamed for putting it in wrong section.
This should be in Q&A I believe
With my lack of android knowledge, I think you need to wipe and reinstall

you have to re-flash the rom after wiping and re-formatting your SD because in doing so you wipe some system files i think that are used off the SD.
Moved to Q&A.
Next time, please post questions here.
Also, did you wipe your EXT2/3 partition also? Did you also wipe your ROM itself through the recovery console?
yeah..
You do understand that once you WIPE DATE/FACTORY RESET there is nothing on th ephone right...
Sooooo, how would you expect it to load a rom that is no longer on your phone?
Why would you wipe without intentions of installing a new rom?
Do you have your sd card with 3 partitions for saving apps to sd card??
this is what helps me i have been there before.. then it locks and turns black..
what i do is pull battery... remove sd... turn phone on.. wait like 10 sec...then pull battery again... replace sd card back in there...put battery bacc..load recovery.. go to your consoloe.. and run fix_permissions...when done type reboot... when reboot .. go bacc to recovery..and run the fix's... after that reboot and should be good!

Wiping doesnt wipe the ROM off your phone...All wiping erases is your userdata (i.e. contacts, apps, appdata, etc.) you can wipe your phone all day long and it should start right back up to the sign-in screen.
Why is it that people who have NO IDEA WHAT THE F*** THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT insist on answering questions that they dont even know the answer to, so you just made up that answer just so you could feel smarter than OP? Get a life and quit passing out misleading information...
WIPING DOES NOT COMPLETELY ERASE YOUR PHONE. IT DOES NOT REMOVE THE ROM FROM YOUR PHONE. It simply returns your phone to the "factory State", which is actually NOT the TRUE factory state, because it DOES NOT REVERT YOUR FIRMWARE.

Help Me! Urgent Phone Issue! Phone INOP!

Ive got a big problem, recently my old SD card **** out so i replaced it with a brand new one with nothing on it. Upon first boot nothing was loaded because obviously APP2SD puts everything on the SDCard, however not even market was loaded on the phone itself so it was impossible to even download anything
Now the big issue!!
In my stupidness i thought i would just wipe and reflash a new CM with the new SD card and see if that fixed everything.. However i wiped and then i realized i didnt have a new ROM on my SD card to flash back too!! so now when my phone boots it just boots to a black screen and nothing appears because there is no rom to run... my phone itself is wiped data/cache and my SD card is completely clean due to it being a brand new one
How can i get my phone working again? right now it is INOP as i dont have any rom on it whatsoever and it wont even boot, i dont have a microSD adaptor to put it on my computer with and load a rom on it
is there some failsafe way to get it back to stock firmware incase something like this happens?
This should be in the Q&A section.
But,
What recovery do you have?
[edit]
oh right, drop into terminal Alt+x, type ums_enable and connect your phone through usb and copy over the rom and Amon Ra's latest recovery.

You could try posting in the right section.... or you could go to recovery, drop to console and type ums_enable- then connect your phone and move a rom over

Go buy an sd reader. Or if you have aman ras recovery you can set it to go to usb fro the recovery menu.
first - wrong section
second, if you have a custom recovery - go to the shell and type
ums_enable with usb plugged in
inop
You need a card reader and the ra dream recovery and you would of fixed it
Wow all of you said the same thing?
And repeated it
Even ^ copied the rest of you by saying got rec mode.
ur first card prooly didnt go bad, u prolly didnt flash the ext-fix from cm..correct? thats what happened to me and i then realized my sd was fine, i was also stuck at the g1 screen b4 i flashed the fix. also from what i read all u did was wipe so ur rom is still there, see if u can grab the old card and getter dun. and stop being a jackass and post this where it goes!!
Post in the correct section, next time, please.

Urgent [Q] I may have screwed up badly..

Ok, I might have bricked my phone. I had the cm7/Aosp gingerbread mod. But I didn't have apps2sd enabled. So I downloaded rom manager, flashed the newest version of clockwork recovery, and rebooted to recovery, where I partitioned for apps 2 sd with a size of 256 mb and 128mb swap-space . I then factory reset, and formatted Boot, cache, data, everything. After that I went to mount as Usb, and I copied the Rom, gapps, and a battery icon mod back to the phone. But the phone didn't recognize any installable packages on my sd after I un-mounted, so I shut my Hero off in hopes it would when I turned it back on p) . When I turned the Hero on, it went to a Usb-fastboot mode, and I couldn't get it to turn off so I removed the battery from the back of my phone, then put it back in. Now my phone won't turn on at all. Does anybody know what I did wrong and can I fix it?

Thanks Spleef, but I was wondering how to get my phone to turn on again as it seems to have just quit on me
Whenever a ROM doesn't boot up properly, boot loop, freeze, etc, I usually have to pull the battery out. Then when I restart it, I hold down the Volume Down and Power buttons at the same time to boot into recovery. Try doing this while the phone is plugged into your wall charger and see if that helps.
Also, I'm not 100% on how to get the apps2sd working, but I had a question about which version of Clockwork you were using. I thought with CM7 Gingerbread we were supposed to use version 3.0.0.5 of Clockwork. I know there is a new version, 2.5.1.7 I think, that shows up in ROM Manager. Unless something has changed, I don't think it will work with CM7.
I'm still pretty new to this, so hopefully someone else will chime in here for you.
Good luck.
i did the same thing one time you gota wipe everything again i mean even the sd card and extthen take ur sd card adapter and put rom gapps any extras on ur sd card then put it back into ur phone then flash it in the order of rom, gapps, extras, and kernel last if u are using one hope this helps
p.s this was using CWM 2.5.0.1
This just happened to me the other day, except I was trying to use firerats partition mod. See if it will boot by holding volume down or up while powering on. It worked for me, but I had to ruu back to stock and had reroot with z4root.apk
Sent from my HTC Hero CDMA using XDA App
Ok anytime you do a factory reset from the phone you most likely will loose root. And leave your phone charged over night it should come back on. And your swap is to big IMO. For apps to sd try a 28 or 32 swap and 512 partition. Then upgrade you ext from ext2 to ext3. And you were supposed to wipe everything before you flashed the apps to sd file. As in wipe everything data,cache,dev-cache and ext. Then flash your rom,google-apps,and kernel last. Boot up sign into your account and let it sync. Then boot to recovery and flash the apps2sd zip. After that you should install your apps. And I think you should ruu and reroot. Sounds like you lost root when you did factory reset from with in the phone. Just my opinion. Hope it helps good luck.

[Q] EXTERNAL SD card failure! Phone dead?

Well it finally died. I got the infamous SD card failure message. For the past few days It was getting slower and slower and I was getting odd Force Closes everywhere. Then the red exclamation mark and a message about the SD card.
The very weird thing is that the failure was about the EXTERNAL SD card. Cannot find mount point... cannot read... Not the ususal INTERNAL SD card message.
Sure enough, if I try to read the Transcend 16Gb MicroSD on my pc or laptop, it appears completely fried. (Cr*p, that's were my backup was!).
But the phone wont boot on wihout the external card! Why? All I can get to is the Download mode. No boot and no recovery.
I'm in Montreal so it appears easy to get it fixed... but should I try flashing it first?

Sound you have some data corruption (or suffering the Bell BUG http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883820)
First try to retreive the data from your external Sdcard with your PC, using the tool "testdisk 6.11". Maybe you'll be lucky enough to retreive all your data with it (repairing your FAT).
If the repair is a succes, then backup the data on your PC and do a low format of the ext sdcard to start clean.
When it's done, try to clean everything on your phone (if you can boot it in recovery), clean the Dalvik, clean the cache, do a factory reset, disable all extra tweaks (if you use a custome kernel already: lagfix etc).
If all process is ok, now you ready to flash a stock and clean rom with the usual tools (no external or sim card in it during the flash and first boot).
Report back when it's done.
GL.
TestDisk is now hard at work. Thanks for that. There's hope for the data!
Phone wont go into recovery. I had 3BR but it's not working now.
Download mode is all I have. I could theoretically try reflashing with ODIN. Repartitioning might not be a bad option considering the state the phone is in. Should I try?

Yes you can try that, but be sure to flash a stock rom first (go for a 2.1).

All data recovered thanks to TestDisk!!!
As for the phone...
It flashes with Odin no problem. (used JH2, which is what I had on there anyway)
But still wont boot. The problem appears to be in the boot partition.
Should I try "Phone Bootloader Update"? (I'm a bit afraid of that because I might lose my 3BR fix)
What does "Phone EFS Clear" do?
Additional symtom: Cant recharge it either (no problem I have external charger so I can always have a full batt for this process). It starts to display the battery charge graphic and then just boot cycles.

Good news for your data!
No doubt if you do a bootloader update with a stock one, you'll lose the 3BCombo (or maybe flash a stock bootloader with the 3BC enabled, not sure if it exist btw??). Try to reflash the 3BC fix only first and see how it work.
Anything that involve EFS is a: DO NOT TOUCH IT =), hope you did a backup of it btw (your EMEI is stored in that folder: No EMEI = No network).
Waiting your feedback.

Tried a couple of things...
A) Updated bootloader with 3BR fix only: No change, Galaxy-S logo then Off.
B) Flashed JL2 (bootloader not checked): Slight change, now it boot cycles.
C) Flashed JL2 + bootloader: Slight change, now it just hangs and the Galaxy-S logo (waited 60 minutes, phone was getting pretty hot so I stopped it).
At all steps I can get back to Download mode but not recovery.
At this point I assume it's hopeless?

Not sure but really sound like a defect internal SD/or more.
Last hope?: repartition + pit 512 + bootloader and Stock 2.1
That killed it for good. Now it's a paperweight!
No nothing. It's like the on#off button was unplugged!
Oh well. It's really nice to have gotten back the data.

Well that's a bad news, maybe pulling out the battery during one or two hours will help to revive it.
Otherwise if it's really the internal sd issue you might check that thread about internal SD bug (if not done yet) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902724 and RMA it.
Don't worry they'll change it with a brand new one. Ring samsung directly if you can.
No worries. I am five minutes away from the service center. Mobo replaced for tomorrow morning they said.
Had I come in before 3PM they left we with the impression they would have changed it while I wait!
Having followed all these threads, I was well aware of the issue long before it actually happened to me. The only thing that surprised me was that it broke the fat table on my external SD.
I was holding back because of the instabilities; with a better unit in hand I'll pop in a fancy rom.
External SD card causes reboot loop
I think I have a similar problem as yours. Just yesterday when I did a restart on my SGS, it suddenly went haywire. The boot loop was continuing for almost 30 mins until it suddenly became stable and reboot as normal.
However, something didn't work out right. I can't view all my pics and videos from gallery, and even my mp3s are not detected inside the music player.
But the very same files are still readable from My Files when I manually dig into these folders.
Same thing happened again just now when I was on my way to work in the subway. I finally had the sense to remove my external sd card and voila, my phone reboots smoothly without a hiccup.
So the question here is, is it that my external sd card is failing or is it that the phone's external sd card reader is failing.
Could anyone with the similar problem share with me their findings?

[Q] can't boot - stuck on htc screen

i was hoping maybe someone could help me with the fact that i can't boot up past the htc screen. i did a search, but couldn't find anything that worked. anyway, i haven't changed anything on my phone - same rom and all - but it was getting laggy lately, and so i thought i would clear the data and dalvik and all that. i figured i'd do a backup first - using RA 1.6.2 it said "performing backup" and the dots kept filling the page, but 15 minutes later it wasn't done so i pulled the battery. now i can't boot the phone (which i find weird since i didn't pull the battery during a restore or anything, so it shouldn't have messed with any files). i did give it over an hour to boot up btw, in case it just needed time to rebuild. tried a backup again (figuring the one i stopped would be corrupt, and thought maybe the phone thought it was still backing up and wanted a complete nandroid to be done?) and it said run via adb. so, i tried flashing clockwork 2.5.0.7 and it looked like it was working at first, but then it just got stuck on "sysinit." i wiped everything and formatted the sd card in case something was corrupt, but still no luck. i realize i COULD reinstall a rom (i'm using aosp froyo) but i'd prefer not to only because i don't have a backup and i'd rather not lose my texts and voicemails if i don't have to.
hopefully i provided enough information. and the battery is fully charged btw. thanks for any help you could provide
That run via ADB message pops up when the battery is below 30%. At this point don't worry about saving the ROM you have right now, all the text messages and voicemails are erased when you do all the wipes. Download a new ROM, put it on the SD card, Wipe everything and flash.
In the future, if you port your number to google voice all your texts and voicemails will be accessible from any computer or new phone no matter what you do.
