[Q] toggle 2G/3G WITHOUT dropping GPRS data connection - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

purpose: to manually toggle between 2G/3G while GPRS data conn is ALIVE
i have 2tabs running droid 2.2 .....galaxy tab p1000 & olive pas V-T100 ( http://www.olivetelecom.in/laptop/olivepad/ )
the olive pad is NOT rooted... galaxy tab IS rooted... both running company firmware
its very important to me tat i be able to manually toggle between 2G/3G/auto while the GPRS conn is ALIVE... on the olive pad i can do this easily... no issue
but when i try to do it on galaxy tab, i get a msg tat active gprs conn will b dropped & i have to choose yes/no
when i choose NO, nothing happens as expected..... when i choose YES, the active gprs data conn is dropped & 2G/3G/auto switching takes place
i reeeeeeeeeeeeeeally need a wayout..... pls help!!!

But the connection SHOULD drop. Going from 3g to 2g isnt like you're slowing down, its changing to a different network.

well, it doesnt drop in symbian... doesnt drop in huawei modems... doesnt even drop on the android olive pad
its supposed to just freeze for 3-4 seconds & resume with 2G/3G speed accordingly

Totaly disableing EDGE ?

Hello, I justa wants to disable EDGE auto connect when he do not find Wifi because sometimes I am loosing wifi connection and EDGE take the relay. With advance config you disable EDGE but not the connection at loose.
AdvanceConfig has an option to disable the GPRS hook. I think this only keeps GPRS on instead of switching to higher-speed protocols. I know this is different from the description that the program itself has, but try it...

And then look at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406440
my problem is that in a poor wifi design ( not home user ) EDGE is taking the relay. I have read all post about EDGE and used Advance config for GPRS auto disable and nothing, gray icon for EDGE but when the connection is lost or in negosiation EDGE connect automaticaly because there is a program request for internet connection and I want to prevent that. I want to totaly diseable EDGE and internet by gsm line; only by Wifi.

WIFI? 3G?

I'm in the UK, and using a Touch Diamond.....on Vodafone 3G. When I'm connected to WIFI, I obviously want to use that for data, rather than use up my precious data allowance.
When I'm connected to a WIFI connection, how do I know Opera/IE/Email are using WIFI - and not my 3G connection? There are times when I'm in my house, and I know it's using my phone data connection, as it's just so slow (very limited reception 3G in my house)....whereas the WIFI should be pretty fast.
i COULD be wrong here.... but the way i know is if the WIFI icon at the top shows connected. If you rphone cant find the WIFI, it'll always divert to a data connection. Play with your phone around the house, see where you get connectivity and how strong to your wifi.

Click to collapse
Yes I know when I'm connected to WIFI and how strong it is....what I want to know is how I know whether my phone is using 3G/GPRS - when I am connected to WIFI and want it to use WIFI and not my phone network. There seems to be no indication to show you are actually 'using' the WIFI network over the phone network....
Settings > Communication Settings.
Turn data connection off, turn wifi on.
Do that before you use internet and your sorted.
On both my Diamond and Touch Pro, the Wi-Fi icon appears on the task bar when Wi-Fi is available. Same goes for 3G.
Also note that some programs call for a certain connection method automatically. For example, you will note that some programs initiate 3G instead of using your Wi-Fi connection. Hopefully, there is a configuration option for such apps.
Cheers.
i don't know if you notice it, but if you are connecting through E or H or G or 3G.. the reception bar instead of the antenna you will get the corresponding letter if you are currently connected to one of them
As long as your WiFi is on and none of those letters are showing up.. you will be fine

Data connections... I'm lost! (Faq/wiki already read)

Hi there, i have a new Diamond ("Victor", from Movistar Spain) and i've reading a lot in the forum in order to set up the device (i had a tytnII before).
I've a lot of questions regarding GPRS/3G/HDSPA connections..
A) Start-Configuration-Phone-Network
I can choose between GSM/WCDMA/AUTO. Does this apply over voice or over data and voice connections?
If i choose GSM then "G" icon (from 3g, i guess) appears on upper bar. If i choose "Auto" then i get "H" icon. So...
Can i choose GSM (in order to save battery) while my data connections can be HDSPA?
B) Can the Diamond update de email accounts via GPRS/3G/HDSPA in suspend mode?
I mean, i often leave the device on suspend mode in order to save battery, and i configured emails in order to update each 10 minutes.
Will the device update the emails in suspend mode or only when it wakes up?
Thaaaaaanks!
Hello,
A)
GSM only active the base data (G = GPRS, E = EDGE)
WCDMA active both GSM&3G (3G, H = HSDPA or 3G+)
Auto allows the phone to choose one of the mode.
Those settings only affect DATA, no call/SMS and whatever, because it uses only GSM.
And yes you can choose only GSM if you want to save battery, it will just affect the speed of your data connection ( G< E< 3G< H)
B) I can't update my mail with my provider, but the diamond can use the data connection in suspend mode, so it will works i know, why do you not test yourself ?
Thanks for your reply.
I didnt test by myself because i hadn't a flat fee for data.
Now i have a flat fee...and a GREAT issue....
I configured my email account on Pda and i can send and receive mails...but only via WIFI, not via HDSPA/3G. When i do "Send and receive" it fails and says "Sync error".
However, with the same setup, i can use Opera, Google Maps, or update the weather.
Why does outlook does not connect?
UPDATE: I have changed a setting on Connections and now it works but i dont know why..... and i dont know if i am loosing something else with this.
Connection - Proxy - Disable proxy (it was On by provider default)
Thanks
how do yo uget to the selection between GPRS, EDGE, 3G and H? Thanks!

Mobile Internet Problem!?

Hello, i have a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S. When i close the Mobile Connecrions and select use only 2G it still using "E" i belive its Edge still have a connection to the internet!!!
How i can close all the internet connections and use only the Wi-Fi?
Unselect 2g aswell?
2G and Edge is the same radio, when your 2G is not using data, it drops to Edge to standby until you engage onto 2G, 3G, HDPA, etc
if you want it all off, then uncheck everything, and use only wifi
i suppose you did not buy a Data Plan?
if that is the case, most carriers will throw and error back to your phone, about "there's no internet conectivity" or some other related merror message
you have to call your carrier to dissable it, else if you use data, they will charge you on a per use rate, which usually is stupidly expensive.
here what i do and have no answer?! when i uncheck everithing it's the same still getting online :S
here what i`m doing
Settings/Wireless and networks/Mobile Networks nothing is checked and same :S i`m still online. When is Unchecked 2G is HSCD or something? still online :S is there some software to cancel all connections to internet.
you can try plane mode
but that will also stop WiFi
by the way this topic should be in "Galaxy S I9000 General" not in Development section

[Q] Edge connects on standby mode?

Hi all. just got my Galaxy S and its a great phone.
One of the annoying part is that whenever the phone goes to standby mode, it connects to Edge network (E is displayed on top). It seems like whenever WI-FI is not available it always connect to Edge network.
Can I set it to connect to Edge network or WI-FI only when there is explicit request from the user?
yes 2G and 3G works even when the phone is in power saving mode for the push emails and other data syncs
WiFi only works when the phone is awake
but there is a fix for that some where in ths forum
Go to your Wi-Fi settings, open up the Menu->Advanced. Set sleep policy to never. Then you'll always have your wi-fi and the phone shouldn't need EDGE for data, unless you moved too far away from the access point.
Install "JuiceDefender" it will turn off net access when screen is off
