Stock Android Email / Push not working - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it me or does the stock android email app not receive pushed emails? My Gmail app receives them instantaneously, or almost. The stock android email app requires you to have a set syncing period. If any new mail is pushed, it will not see it until you manually sync or the sync period previously set comes around.
Is this behavior the way this app is intended to work or am I missing something?
Any insight would be much appreciated!

I set my email to every 5 minutes. it's a little drain on battery but its really nice
watch your data though, i recommend the 2GB plan if you set it to every 5

I have unlimited data... just wish I could figure out why a stock android email app can't take advantage of Push...
Thanks for your suggestion though!
Anyone else have any ideas?

Does everyone else experience this same type of sync issue as well?
Any input would be appreciated!

i have never had problems with stock android mail app when it comes to push. been using it on exchange 2003 backend for quite some time. its worked fine since 2.1

I use Maildroid. It will push most email (haven't tried Exchange accounts), even yahoo.

Thanks guys,
I am needing it to allow for push emails from my gmail accout. So far the stock email client is the only one I have found that allows me to use Grouped Contacts... I would think that gmail push to native email android email client would be a given but not so for me...

the GMail app pushes....

Yes and I use it in conjunction with the stock app. The Gmail app will not let me use grouped contacts though. I manage a sports team and I frequently have to send out emails with 35+ recipients and with gmail I have to enter each one separately.
Thanks for the input!

that makes sense. didnt realize it didnt allow that.

I have moved on to the GSII but still ran in to this problem. The fix was eventually found by someone else (bustabo) but here it is...
You have to set up your Gmail account using the exchange settings in account setup.

Push email

is there a way to have push email on android ? i used the email service on it but it updates my inbox every 2 days and i have set it on every 5 minutes update...so is there anyway to sync my hotmail account with android ? thanks
I don't know about the stock email app but K9 supports push, although it's quite flakey on 2.2 (most caused by service api changes)

The stock supports push but I think only for exchange servers. I'm not sure Hotmail can push.
Push is only for Exchange. And the stock one sucks for features and the interface.
If you want good Exchange support for Activesync with push, use the Desire Rom, the interface and features are good.
Also, there is a third party Exchange push app that does it all too that will run on stock Roms.
Any other Push I don't think exist right now...but then again, I guess I never really looked and needed it since I used Exchange.
To the original poster - if you use any standard IMAP email provider that supports IMAP IDLE, K9mail has flawless push email. Unfortunately, I don't think Hotmail supports IMAP IDLE.

Setting the record straight - I've been running K9mail 2.8 and now 2.9 on FRF50, then FRF72 and now FRF83 and IMAP IDLE has been rock solid stable for me. Not a glitch since several releases ago.
i've never used hotmail (ok i lie i used it in 1998) but if it supports forwarding or pop you can forward all email to gmail or have gmail fetch hotmail through pop. android's native gmail app supports push.
You could also setup your gmail account to go POP your hotmail account on a regular interval. Then anything that gets brought over would be pushed to your local android gmail app right away.

that's cool!
Hotmail will have Exchange support shortly, so you could wait and do it that way.
Or you can get GMail to pull your emails and then read them in the GMail client. The problem with this message is that you reply from GMail and not Hotmail.
It's not possible to get Hotmail to forward emails outside of their accounts.
The gmail client its the best mobile email there is, period.

just an fyi..
I have 3 accounts set up in gmail and also have Gmail Notifier (from marketplace) installed. I get separate color and sound notification depending on which account receives email with this combo.
If you have other non-gmail accounts just set them to forward to a dummy gmail account - you'll still be able to get custom notification (trackball, sound etc)
maybe it's just me.. but the mobile gmail website that opens up in the stock browser looks 100x better with it's UI and color scheme..
the gmail app is so darn ugly.. why can't they make it look at least as decent as the mobile site?

[Q] Exchange Mail App

Hi friends
My workplace requires me to sync with their mail exchange server to get all my e-mail & calendars pushed. I've set it all up great on stock but my issue is when I am sent a new meeting request, I have no ability to accept or reject it on the phone. Any ideas on how I can resolve this? I'd prefer to stay on stock until I make sure my phone works fine before venturing into a custom ROM. I am not aware of there being any really good 2.2 ROMs specifically for the Captivate but when I am ready, I just want 2.2 on a simple ROM similar to stock without the bloatware. Any help is greatly appreciated.
no need to use a custom rom to make your mail usable.
i use an app called touchdown on my phone. it is the most complete mail client i have found so far. only downside is that it costs $20. well worth it if you need nearly COMPLETE functionality out of your mail client
i hear good things about k-9 but i couldnt get it to connect to my exchange server so i gave up on it and went with touchdown
I am using the stock app and i am able to accept or reject invites in the email app. They have a calendar icon and i scroll down and hit accept. An email reply pops up and i hit send.

alphadog some reason it doesn't allow me to..just shows a blank e-mail. Can you also create meeting requests and send them to colleagues?

this wasnt working for me when i first got my phone. i just tried it again and it works now....an update or something i did? i dont know, its weird, because just after i got my phone, i was testing it out with some guys at work....
i still find touchdown to be better when it comes to actually reading the emails. full html email support is nice and looks more professional. the stock email client looks like a hack job when it breaks lines mid-word.

[app] hotmail?

Anyone found an APP that will work with Hotmail with a Captivate? Stock, tablet and even K-9 don't support it. There must be a decent one out there! Thanks!

Stock email app works like a charm with hotmail. I got 2 accounts configured under it and my local provider email also. Never had issues getting hotmail.
If you want to fully managed your hotmail (delete mails on server) then your right default email app on the cappy cannot do it but it can fetch the mail.
EDIT: Tried delete on the server option and it works. Fluke bug probably.
Do a Google search on "Hotmail activesync android" and you should be on your way use stock email to do push Hotmail. server deletion is supported last time I checked.

Correct .. last time i tried it failed miserably.. maybe just a bug or a bad connection.
Haven't tried it personally, but I do use Maildroid for gmail,Yahoo, and my ISP email. All set to push, even free Yahoo.
I used the exchange server for hotmail on my Captivate, worked fine with the stock email. Set it up as exchange, using m.hotmail.com as the server. Your username is your full email address. I don't have a Captivate anymore so I don't know if you need anything else (like port numbers). Google should give you the rest.
Also, if you set it up as exchange you can choose to sync your contacts and calendar with hotmail.

IMAP Email App

Does anyone know of an IMAP email app that is worth using? There seem to be a bunch out there that are all iffy from what I've seen. My college account is IMAP, and I can get the correct configuration settings from them, but first want an app that is actually decent. Paid apps aren't out, but a trial first would be nice, or at least a pretty perfect review.
Thanks!
I use K-9 Mail for my comcast accounts (2 POP3), gmail account (IMAP) and my college email account (IMAP). It is HIGHLY customizable and works great been using it for years.
I just use Gmail. I probably have 6 different emails linked to it. For my college, I just it forward a copy to my primary gmail account. Then again, my college email is gmail based.
Gmail DOES support IMAP and POP.

The built in email app supports imap, I use it for my university. Just go to accounts and add it from there.

I find the built in app to be just fine and it should do IMAP, unless you tried it and are having issues. I use the built in email app for my college, except we use an MS Exchange server and it works fine.
The above two posters have better ideas. My method was to do it all through gmail on my computer and have all my emails linked to my main account, then just have 1 gmail app reading my primary account, but that's sort of a security risk. If someone gets into my primary gmail account, they can see everything.

Slayer621, why not setup 2 factor authentication on your gmail account? Your phone can be a soft-token, that way it will be more secure. When it comes to my University, they want all emails to instructors/staff to go through your main Uni account, so that's why I won't route everything through gmail.

I was looking to do it through the stock email app, but running SD5.1 ICS doesn't have the option to add an email account. I'll look into K9, but I may be heading back to Mav4 GB here soon anyways where there may be a stock email app. Thanks! I'll be back with updates.
Kinda hitting a dead end here. I'm on Mav4 and using the stock email app, I added my email address and pw, then I hit manually configure and entered what I could find from the school (Univ. of Pittsburgh, http://technology.pitt.edu/Document...obile/Mobile Devices and Enterprise Email.pdf), but couldn't get it to work. I'll be trying K9 tomorrow maybe.

Anyone know of a good Email app?

I'm looking for an email app that can handle multiple email accounts. Originally I was using both GMail and Outlook but as soon as GMail started adding ads that could not be deleted I dropped both apps and switched back to Aqua Mail. Now I'm having a problem with Aqua Mail and can't get a resolution from the official forums.
I've since switched to Blue Mail but it seems to be a heavy app and is draining my battery. Plus, I don't get any type of notification when I get emails even though I have it setup to do so.
So, what is everyone using and what can you suggest?
I use K9

I used to use K9 as well, but there was something really goofy about their UI I didn't like. I'll give them a go again.
OK, I tried it again, now I remember why I didn't like it. I use Hotmail/Outlook and I can receive emails but can't send them.

I've been using Aquamail for years. But about 3 days ago it stopped working. I asked about it on their forums and got no answer. This isn't the first time I've had problems with Aquamail; I've tried to stay loyal to it since I paid for it. But I'm just sick of it working, then not working for no apparent reason.
I just installed K9 this morning. Seems to be working well enough for now. I haven't had time to sit down and mess with some of it's features yet.
Mail Droid
I have been using Maildroid for some time and highly recommend it. It is highly customizable and easily supports multiple accounts. The developer quickly responds to problems and there is decent web support.
I use [email protected], don't know why I never went to K9. Works well with multiple accounts and PGP integration. Couldn't ask for anything more.
+1 for Maildroid
What's wrong with the stock one? Mine checks an exchange account and 2 imap accounts just fine.

I remember using MailDroid years ago when it first came out. Haven't given it a second look before today. It looks like it's got a lot of really nice features. I'm downloading it now.
Stock email client is very good. Just don't use it for gmail. It will kill your battery from my experience.
Works fine for all my other accounts (exchange, yahoo, etc).

+1 for AquaMail. That's the only email app I can find according to my needs. Another decent one is infamous K9. GMail is the worst email app I have ever used, I uninstall it practically after flashing a new ROM / wiping the phone.
I use stock for hotmail and gmail only issue I have for the exchange hotmail is you can't empty the trash in one click.

The only reason I stopped using Gmail is because of their new ad feature. They send you ads that are disguised as emails and then don't allow you to delete them. Once I dropped Gmail I dropped Exchange as well and went back to Aquamail. Aquamail stopped working three months after I put it on my phone. So it got dropped too. I tried Droidmail, didn't like some of it's features. I'm currently using K9.
I use Inomail. Handles multiple accounts as well as allows html signatures. IMAP, POP, and all the others.
