Nook Color CM7 Unecessary Packages? - Nook Color General

Forgive me if this is ignorant but does the CM release for encore really need to come packaged with the phone, camera, texting etc apps even thpigh its not a phone? I understand you can remove them through ADB so my question is, why is it part of the release in the first place? Also, (all of this is judt out of curiosoty) after looking at the nightly changelog, why are nightlies with changes that dont apply to the NC released as a NC nightly???
Thanks,
Moriarty

Moriarty, I have to agree. It looks like bloat-ware and when you see the phone icon in the launcher I was all confused at first being only a nook owner for 1 week. After looking around, I found Phiremod faster than CM7, but to be honest, being a noob, i havent found a singly package that comes in a .img file that is "awesome" for the nookcolor.

I highly doubt Phiremod is faster than CM7 considering it's a themed CM7 with a few preinstalled apps....

They are there, because they allow us to see most of the apps on the market. As it is, i am not sure why so many people fuss over these apps; they don't effect us, use battery, etc.
And Phriemod.... pff... all Phridemod was (since it isn't really active anymore) is just a CM7 with a theme. If it were faster, it was luck...

Words of wisdom lol. You need those to get all the market apps to show.
Maybe someone could write up a quick app to remove them though, I can't myself (and don't care to learn your something like that) but I'm sure it wouldn't be to difficult.

You can remove them with Titanium Backup (but they will reappear if you flash a new ROM).

What I meant was an app that would delete them all with just one click but yes, Titanium is great for that job. Root Explorer can do it too.

I believe that is because CM7 is one large development project that attempts to push Gingerbread to the limits. The various tablet/phone modders then take it and tweak it to run smoothly on the unit (Nook). If they stripped out all the camera, phone, etc apps, they would have to spend time doing that each time the main CM7 was updated. In addition, some of these apps at some point actually might work with the Nook, such as the camera app when, when additional hardware is found such as web cams, microphones, etc.
Having said that, it would probably make a lot of sense to strip them all out when a stable release is posted so that people who have no need can install that release and others can continue with the nightlies.

I know we're in Nook Color subforum, and it's implied that that's the device we're talking about, but that should be pointed out since the Nook Color isn't the only device running CyanogenMod.
I have a feeling this will always be an end user activity, however, because including the apps apparently opens up apps in the market you wouldn't otherwise see. I would think the people releasing the Mod would lean towards giving you all the options they can get away with, and leaving it up to you to close whatever doors you don't want to walk through.
Until someone makes, (or makes known an existing) market fooling application that will enable the apps you wouldn't see without having the .apks installed.

A really quick "fix" is to use something like Launcher Pro. I have had it installed since basically day one, and I have used it to hide those applications. Seriously, until this thread, I really did forget they are even installed.
I have hidden:
Camera
Car Home
Email
Latitude
Messaging
Phone
Sound Recorder
Voice Dialer

Yeah, this.. Plus a bunch of other apps that insist on having launchers, like some Live Wallpapers, widgets, etc.. Because users are idiots and give 1 star if they can't "open" a Market download.

Why do you knock phiremod that much? Is it really that bad and not worth considering? I have used it and thought it was cleaner than CM7 but there are other releases that I wouldn't mind trying like muiu something similar to that name.

It's just CM7 with some theme. Not like some great development like DM's and DB's Honeycomb, CyanogenMod's CM7, etc. Plus, it's basically been abandoned.

Because it has caused such confusion for devs here, and it is just silly. People looked at it like it was a different rom, when it was nothing more than a few nightlies that got themed. There is no actual work on the rom.. its all cosmetic. Even worse, is because of the delay in "releases", it really fell behind while CM7 was gaining steam (to the point where they were even using different kernels).
Perhaps i am too.... "mean", but i just call it like i see it at times. I apologize for urking some people; its just the way I am. I think people have a much better experience using CM7 and theming it as they want, rather than the pre-made stuff.

FWIW, I'm not a big fan of the rom either. I don't like it when folks replace all strings matching "CyanogenMod" with their custom name, slap on a different theme and bundle a few apps available in the market and then ask for donations.
I'm not going to try to stop anyone from doing it and I'm not going to get upset about it but I don't necessarily like it.

Since Phiremod himshelf decided to move away from this forum for his own reasons, I dont think its nice to listen only one side on this matter.
Anyway, its a matter of free decision. If U like Phiremod and its look, go with it.Or if U like other Roms, free to go.

Using themes on MyTouch 3G

New MyTouch 3G Owner here , just switched from a unlocked and jailbroken 16GB 3G iPhone. Got tired of not having 3G, i mean the phone is awesome, just got bored with it. And you need to jailbreak in order to customize.
So basically, I was on the market, and noticed themes, i downloaded one but said i needed GDE, sorry but i am new to this phone. And i heard you can do actual ROMS, but stuff like gtalk, and other main features of the phone wont work. This is why i got rid of the iPhone, i dont really wanna root, just want a cool theme like the xRoms, but i know i need extra widgets.
What can i do to make this happen?
still no answer

If you look on the market there are applications called aHome and dxTop which are home alternatives that allow you to theme your mytouch without actually having to root it.
I have played with both and actually liked both but decided the world of ROMS are so much better and worth it. If you ever decide on going that route feel free to pm me for any help. i am by NO MEANS an expert but have learned from here and can point you in the right direction.
Hope that helped.
Hey na_rsx
That theme you downloaded requires a program called GDE, its another home replacement application, should be available in the market. But like djflipnautikz said dxtop, aHome or OpenHome are other good ones aswell, just install em have a play and decide which you like the best.
The roms are best way to go though and is no where near as daunting as you might think and you don't lose any functionality if you pick your ROM well

I know ROM's are so much better, i actually want the Hero ROM, but isn't it true that if you do a ROM you lose a lot of features that basically makes the phone useless. I check out ahome and dxTop and dabble with it.

i did a search on GDE but nothing shows up, I would love to do a ROM, but i use GTalk a lot, i mean if you can link me to some good tutorials and recommend a ROM that would not lose all my abilities i am all for it. I could unlock and jaibreak iPhones like no ones business, so i am sure rooting wont be as difficult.
na_rsx, search on the forums about changing your rom but personally Ive used cyanogenmod roms for a good while without trouble and I use services like Gtalk, gmail, google calendar etc every single day, everything that works on the stock phone works on the modded one with addition of some stuff that isnt available on a stock phone yet =o)
This isn't iPhone where you get nerfed for making modifications

Just wanted to say hi!

Hey guys/gals what is up. I'm so happy to announce that sometime next week my HTC Aria will be handed to me by UPS. Anyway I have been a member here for a while under the HTC Fuze(Touch PRO)section and tinkering around with there android port. That was untill my phones touch screen decided not to work back in june. So I have been Sitting around with my old Nokia that still has the Cingular Wireless logo on the back. Anyway I can't wait to finally be back in the phone game and finally on a true android phone. Is there any apps besides advanced task killer I should keep my eye out on?
Thanks a bunch,
Matt(AkumaMax)
I used Advanced Task Killer for a week or so, then heard some saying you shouldn't use a task killer with Android. After reading up a bit on the subject, I came to the conclusion that they are unnecessary and may actually increase battery drain.
There are a ton of great apps. Depends on what you want to do... I would highly recommend LauncherPro for customizing the look of your phone. Camera360 is a great app for adding special effects to your camera images. I use Appbrain.com to browse the market, and it's companion apps Appbrain Market and Fast Web Installer both installed on my phone. This combo allows me to browse their website for apps and click INSTALL on the website to send the app to my phone and install it without me having to do anything else.
Not sure how adventurous you're going to be with modding your phone. It took me about two weeks to build up the courage to root and install a custom ROM. I don't regret it a bit! I installed Cyanogen 6.1 RC1 and then a couple days later RC2 released, so I installed that. Basic benefits of doing this are upgrading from Android 2.1 to 2.2, ability to side-load apps from the SD card, moving apps to the SD card and off the internal phone memory, live wallpaper support, and I'm sure there are plenty more, but that's what hits me off the top of my head.
There's lots of good help on these boards, I've asked plenty of noobish questions and haven't had a single nasty response. Don't hesitate to ask anything that comes to mind... after you search, of course! =)

Oh there is no doubt I want to root the phone. Just for the fact I want my apps off my phone and on my SD card only. I modded my HTC fuze to the fullist but now it's useless. So I can't wait to get back into the game. I know this phone is not the greatest out there but like I said it's something to get me by untill I decide on the Nexus One or maybe an EVO. Anyway I heard that same info about Advanced task killer so I will probibly stay away from that. I just want the ability of my phone to be the best it can be. Hope to see all you soon.

@911Jason man, you're such a pest! Hahahahah j/k
So, I would go against putting all of your apps on the SD card. I've done a lot of research on this, and unless you have a Class 6 or higher card, running apps from the SD are pretty pointless. There is a pretty decent support forum around, it might take a while to get a reply, but its getting better.
Some of my favorite apps:
Launcher Pro Plus
PowerAmp
Audio Manager Pro
Dolphin HD Browser
ChompSMS

saying hi, need ten post to ask stuff on cyanogen forum.
hello akumamax, welcome. i have had my aria for about a year now and i love this phone with cm7. there are so many good apps out there but the three things that stands out for me are:
1) amazon app store. there's a free pay app every day, and its yours to keep.

Replace Stage UI

Does anyone use LauncherPro as a Stage UI replacement (on Froyo 2.2.2)?
Or can anyone help with replacing Stage UI - I'm rooted but I don't really want to install an entire new ROM just to change the launcher?
TIA

You have quite a few options out there, LauncherPro being one of them. All you need is a home replacement app. I'm currently running Zeam. It's smooth, free, and very configurable. I have it set for 6x6 rows x columns, and it scales perfectly for the Streak 7. It doesn't have a lot of frills, but I don't like frills so it's great! (I prefer to just install 1000 widgets of my choosing.)
Market Link
There's also LauncherPro, ADW Launcher, Regina (only works in portrait mode, though), etc. Lots and lots of options, out there; none of which require root.
Ah, Thanks But...
I've used Zeam on my rooted Nook Color - unfortunately, the link (or rather the market) will not let me install Zeam on my Streak. IDK why - How did you get it installed? I do have the Zeam 2.95 apk - is that the version that you use?

Yes, that's the version I use. I gave the market link for the in-browser market; just search for "zeam" in the Market app on your Streak and you'll find it. I installed it from the Market app on my Streak 7.
Using launcher pro mainly because I already paid for it for other devices.

It should be easy; when I installed it, the first time I launched it the system asked if I wanted it to be used as the shell. There was a checkbox for always use, and that was all there was to do.

Actually I was replying to a 3 day old post by rvbarton - who is obviously still having problems getting Zeam on his Streak. I just finished installing it on mine 10 minutes before replying to his post...
Oh whoops, i misred the date on his first post, thought it said jan 2011 and not jan 2012.
Checked it on market and it's not compatable with my S7 on HC either, are you still on 2.2 RCounts? That might be why
Though the screenshots show it works on ICS, perhaps they simply dont support tabs,
(in the eyes of the market, S7 with HC = tablet, S& with froyo = sorta-phone)
Yeah, I'm still on Froyo. I just got mine and its a t-mobile. So far all I've done is unlock it , and at this point I'm not confident enough to try the HC upgrade...
if you update you wont be able to auto update zeam afterwards as its not compatible with HC, but I doubt it'll auto uninstall it

Not sure that I will bother with the update to HC. Zeam got rid of that horrible Stage UI for me, and that was one of the main advantages to HC IMO. Is HC even worth the trouble? Especially now that the Stage UI is dead, and there are so many more apps that are compatible with Froyo that aren't with HC (Zeam being one example)?
I know you are really knowledgable about HC since you wrote the udate guide. If I inderstand it correctly, in order to install HC on my t-mobile, I first have to install a recovery.img file for a non-t-mobile 4G, THEN the update.pkg for HC, and if I skip the restore.img step the update will fail with a FOTA mismatch. Is that correct?
Yea and yea on the update part. Someone on 2.2 must use the recs provided on the 506/7 update page, they cant boot a stock 5xx/3.2 recovery because of the changes in 5xx
There arnt many people that actively choose to remain on 2.2, but everyone's allowed their own opinion.
Mine is that the s7 wasnt worth buying until HC, and incidentally I just happened to get mine days after official HC. Going to update to ICS and try and break stuff now.
I've had the S5 and I can more or less guess what the S7 would feel like without HC and I know I wouldnt have liked it. But just as much I dont have any apps that only work on 2.x and not hc, so I dont have to worry about that.

My biggest concern is with the potential to brick it. I'm especially uncertain about the first part of the process - setting up the fastboot and installing the non t-mobile recovery.img. Is there any way to make it a recovery.pkg or otherwise put it on the device itself so that it will install from the SD card like the update.pkg file?
What are the other benefits of HC? What makes it so much better than Froyo? Is the battery life that much better? If its really worthwhile I might be persuaded to do the update...
I would say to make a nvflash and you'll always have something to restore to, but you cant really make a simple guide out of it, you pretty much MUST learn how to use it to correctly use it.
The biggest difference is the UI, HC is designed around 120 dpi (which the S7 uses) and makes much better use of the space allotted.
HC native apps do not even use the menu button and long pressing stuff is rather rare. It's nearly night and day UI/UX wise.
Even the little things like the new notification tray is completely different from the tray in 2.x (or 4.0 using the phone UI)
The S5 @120 dpi nowhere near compares as 2.2/2.3 are not very efficient with their space, there's plenty of room for a lot more buttons, but you're still forced to access everything from the menu button or long press stuff.
Battery wise, I believe it's slightly better then 3xx/2.2, but it's still not amazing.
It's not a perfect upgrade, as you've seen with zeam and the like, but for me it's benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.
The majority of apps are still not HC/ICS native either, but once more ICS devices roll out they'll automatically be able to take advantage of the tab UI much better. (Anything with ICS and supports tabs automatically also support HC)

Amazing droid3 hacks?

hey i noticed how ios has amazing hacks once you jailbreak it. things that you didnt even know would be possible with the device. are there hacks like this with android? i love my droid and wanna see everything it can do. post your top hacks to help me out :]
Search the word "root" or go to the android development area of the D3 forum and your mind will be blown..
i have steeldroid 3.0 its great. i mean things lik cydia for the iphone, where its a market that just features thousands of user developed mods
Ha! Oh yes my friend. We have "root" our jailbreaking term, and much more. We have more stock that we can do that you cannot do on a jailbroken iPhone. But yes, to theme it and have super user access you need to root.
Definitely look into rooting. just know that 1) it voids your warranty if something gets messed up(but same with jailbreak of iphone anways so who cares) 2) RESEARCH before your start messing with things and read up on things because i can tell u from firsthand experience, your going to brick your phone if you do not put some solid time into research. i bricked my phone because i just wanted my phone to look cool and i didnt care about the effects it would have. I flashed a "non flashable" zip on my phone and that was the end of that haha. I am by no means a pro. I only recently got into the rooting of the phones this past year and a half or so. But XDA is a great way to learn what you dont know already. I learned almost everything on this website. The people here are extremely knowledged(a lot more than me lol) and someone will always be there to answer questions you have. Once you root.. a whole new lifestyle emerges
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
jailbreaking is nothing compared to root acess
acess to system files basically able to modify anything you want. ios has "live wallpapers" once you jailbreak not! more like looped mp4s. android is open source has widgets flash. ios doesnt compare.

You can find most emulators on the market or online. I have a nintendo64, gameboy color, and gameboy advance emulator I found on the market.
We also just found out about the camera app rom the Atrix. If we replace our camera app with that one, everything about the camera speeds up.
Its also all about looking in the right place for stuff. Instead of having Cydia, we have XDA.

Here's you answer. Flashing ROMs and Rooting is like jailbreaking. I see no purpose for rooting unless you want to flash a custom ROM.
Rooting also allows you to use apps that need to be rooted, like Titanium backup and one of those screen shot apps.
As for hacking after rooting? I have no idea. Just install personalization and productivity apps.
Many apps that would be in Cydia are already in Google's Market since it is not as restrictive as Apple's. You can find console emulators there. For phone specific tweaks and programs this forum is a good place to check. Its harder to find hardware tweak programs since there are so many Android phones and only one iPhone. But for software there is a lot out there, custom stuff and beta apks if you want to try them.
I really don't think there is much you can do with iOS
I mean yeah there's some customizing
but I've never seen a fully customized ipod or iphone

i forgot about that. that makes since of why a cydia like app wouldnt work. well it would but it would take some work. But thanks that cleared most of the stuff up for me. Im going to look up the emulators and see if there are any tweaks on here :]

I don't think so. I think there are many customizations on the hacked iPhone because it's restricted some features in the first place.
I think to you Android doesn't have any customizations because there are so many customizations in the first place without the need for rooting that you're convinced that rooting it doesn't do much at all (besides custom Roms).
Call it an illusion?
Otherwise show us some things the jailbroken iPhone can do that a non-rooted Android device can not.

YOutube this stuff:
graviboard
barrelroll 3d [the ability it has to switch animations without having to flash]
cydia elite pro theme [compare that to a normal iphone theme. they can change their signal bars to be wateva symbol or picture, color of their time, how many icons on the screen, everything, without having to flash their device]
thats just a couple. im not saying iphone better but it has better customizations.

Barrel 3D (do you mean Barrelroll 3D or Barrel 3D?)
Try LauncherPro by Federico and change the transition effect to whatever you like.
Graviboard
Here are some similar stuff: "Shake Them All!" by YOUGLI and "Seeds of Life" Live by We Like CAPS!
Cydia Elite Pro
The hard way: flash a custom ROM or design your own ROM
The incomplete way: download a custom launcher like LauncherPro, or some apps that appear in the notification tray like Quick Settings.
The best way: create demand for it, start asking for it, petition for something like Cydia Elite Pro.
BTW, with LauncherPro you can: change scroll animation, set number of columns/rolls/icons, change your dock at the bottom, hide notification bar on top. And LauncherPro is only one of many launchers.
Furthermore, believe me when I say it's possible. There used to be an app for Windows Mobile to modify the icons and appearance of the notification tray on top of the screen. I think that if Windows Mobile can do it, then Android can do it. So what can you do? Talk to the person who developed the Windows Mobile app and tell him to join Android development. As for the name of the app and the developer; I don't remember who made it or what it's called but I am not lying to you.
What you've asked for are 100% possible on Android. What you need is patience and to be able to ask for it.
Sorry Dri94 but why don't you just use your Droid 3 for a couple of weeks and test and try everything instead of comparing everything with the i*hone. When I switched from Symbian to WinMo 6 I did the same.
If you're worried about having to "flash the device" to get custom features then Android is too advanced for you, get an iPhone. All those Cydia tweaks do is change little pieces of Apple's crappy ass launcher. Flashing a ROM gives us an entirely customized and optimized version of Android. There's hundreds of system wide themes you can apply with Theme Chooser, which is built into CyanogenMod.

If you read, instead of being douchey to the iphone, you woudl see i already flashed my device, its not too advanced for me. I keep getting talked to dumb because i use the word iphone, its not forbidden and its a good device. Android is better but its dumb to say iphone isnt good at all, and to treat me like im dumb because i like both devices... its just an inconvience if im walking around and need to flash my device just to get different things. i often try 20 different things before i choose one. CyanogenMod is still in alpha btw. when it comes out then i will definitely use it tho. it looks awesome

Also, I tried to remember the name of the apps that I used to tweak the notification tray, but I just can't find it (not even searching by history on XDA). If I remember the app, I'll tell you and I suggest you contact those developers. Based on my experiences as a consumer, some developers do listen.
I have both iPhone and Note 3
lifehacker (dot) com/5916593/ forget-android-the-iphone-is-a-better-phone-for-hacking-tweaking-and-customization
This link sums it up. I literally have more tweaks and customizations on the jailbroken iPhone than I do with my rooted Note 3. QuickDo, reveal, bitesms, phantom (for snapchat), pandora downloader, mewseek, codescrambler, cyueye, f.lux, flagpaint, folderenhancer, rageboard, quickphoto, locationholic, luna, octopus keyboard (blows any android alternative away) protecti, spotdict, springtomize, and zeppelin.
I love the note 3 though, hands down better in terms of everything. size, speed and specs. I just think that the Cydia/Jailbreak community is much more integrated and tighter. Jailbreak is easy to get rid of and go back to stock without having to worry about any KNOX flags being tripped etc. Simply restore with iTunes and that is it. I would like to see some of the tweaks I mentioned and maybe have a more centralized repository, especially for us new to android from ios

Can't believe we were anxiously awaiting this..

Android 4.2 doesn't even seem well thought out, let alone designed. Is Google playing the Apple game, tying us into their universe and making us take whatever the deliver?
Do they even care how many apps won't work or have to have multiple purchases to support their multi-user "security"? Should have just left the multi-user thing to 3rd party devs. They fail on this, IMO.

Google doesn't care.. Remember when 4.1.1 broke a bunch of paid apps by sticking them in the asec folder which wasn't mounted at startup? So since it wasn't mounted Android never saw the apps during boot and paid keyboards and widgets disappeared after a reboot. MONTHS went by before it was addressed. Meanwhile developers of those paid apps had angry customers and money lost because of Google
This will be the same song and dance.. Google is getting very sloppy with development and communication with developers pre-release seems to not exist.
I love it.

Stop stereotyping. People are always so quick to hate on Americans. Yes there are bad Americans...but every country has them. Even your country. But I'm not going to go there since I happen to like most people from the UK that I've encountered...it would be unfair to label your entire nation as arrogant, ungrateful, and judgmental because of your behavior.

Anyway thanks for the clean up
But still I agree with the OP. Google is becoming arrogant, sloppy and in its quest to be more user friendly making fiends of the ppl that were with them from version 1.
So what is the problem? I am only one person using my nexus and I haven't run into any issues.

Android is and always will be "A WORK IN PROGRESS". My opinion only but if you want bland and safe sell your nexus 7 to me for .50 cents and get a ipad mini.
People who are having issues Please go to the developers web site and let them know your app is not working properly .Give them exact details. You can do the same to google at groups.google.com. Just be Patient
Now my GRIPE The multi user cluster (word here im not typing) as others said was not well though through by google. My guess is they made a date promise and pushed out only part of the Feature.. Typical Google.
It will get better and it will happen quite soon.. Lets just hope...

I suppose YMMV, but I love 4.2. Smoother than 4.1, and nice features. The only thing that really seems half-assed is the multiuser support.
What is your problem with multi-user? For me and my daughter it is working great - could not be better.
I did add my account to her user ID Play store so she could see the apps we own and install the link.
Performance is good - all our preferences and accounts are separated - and I really can't think of any other features I would want.

I haven't played with multi-user yet, can you add the account just for the play store and not have someone access the gmail account associated with it?
That's my gripe, I want to be able to for ex, have my nephew play with my tablet and all the games etc, but don't want him to access to my gmail etc. I thought this was perfect for that but then read about the app issue. Also, I assume there is no type of limited user, in that a secondary account can still uninstall apps, but at least they can't delete files from the other users home dir.
Yes - my account is just added to my daughter's play store. Open play store and look at add account option.
Works perfectly to give her access to the apps we share.
NO shared Gmail.
Forgot something important:
When you add a second account to play store, you are given a bunch of items you can synch, like contacts.
Uncheck them all!

Stick mount wasn't a feature of 4.1. It was hacked in which is why you had to be rooted and use an app. You'll get USB support again. Multiuser support screwed with the storage. That's all.
New tweaks are a little rough around the edges but will be smoothed out soon enough. Give it time, damn guys. I personally think its no better or worse then 4.1.2. We just have a few new toys now.

4.2 = 1st time I've truly experienced "butter"...
Sure, I kinda miss the bells & whistles I had on Codename Android, and I'll definitely check out any forthcoming 4.2 updates, but scrosler's stock, rooted, deodexed ROM is far & away the smoothest, quickest ROM I've used on any Android device. Stock kernel, no tweaks, plain vanilla is for me for now. Way better Google experience. OK, I sideloaded the AOSP browser for Flash, but that's it. Chrome is much more responsive on 4.2 than 4.1.2 - Everything is noticeably quicker - I even detect better wireless response. Your results may vary, but I'm not going back!

Well, I do belive that you are right. I also feared (and expected, to tell the truth) that something EXACTLY like this would happen. I tried NOT to update the system, but why the hell did they keep forcing it when we obvoiusly do not want it? And probably, they must have known that it will broke a lot of things...
Just to explain: for me, there was a message with three buttons: upgrade, more info (which leads to seme text and bigger "upgrade" button and "later", but that "later" means only "ask at next screen unlock" which made the tablet realy hard to use. So, what choice have I had?
